I had an idea today: what if we decided to run a contest to see who could write the best song on the guitarist's guild? Someone could pick a key or something and then everyone would go and write a tune in that key.
OOr we could do a pass-it-on song, where someone writes a tune, posts it somewhere and then anyone can download it and write to it.
Any ideas?

Why be restricted to one key?

DigitalTrowa Why be restricted to one key? Well, it will present a challenge to the writer. The idea is to get into keys that will not only be interesting, but to make everyone a better player to.

I could agree with the one key thing, but perhaps we can set a minor key as well, say, the literal minor or harmonic minor of that single major key?

It's a very cool idea, not sure I would be able to enter it though.

AshWufei I could agree with the one key thing, but perhaps we can set a minor key as well, say, the literal minor or harmonic minor of that single major key? Well, by giving the Aeolian of that particular key, you could find the natural minor, and I'm not 100% sure how exactly to derive the harmonic minor or melodic minor, but that's no big deal. Black Metal Ist Krieg It's a very cool idea, not sure I would be able to enter it though. I was afraid that we'd have people that wouldn't be able to enter. I'd almost like to open it up for people who have no way of recording themselves. It would have to be a midi submission though....

That's a good idea, having MIDI submissions.. also, it's that I don't know anything about keys because I've only just started teaching myself just to read music notes and learn the notes on guitar. So I'm not quite at the level of keys, modes, scales yet. But I mean if we held a competition in one key, it'd be really great for someone to thoroughly explain it out for people like me. Not sure everyone here can read music as well.

You could play in E pentatonic minor which would be basically a G major. You could play almost all the open chords that you normally play, like G major, D major, C major, etc...

The files could be uploaded to a free site, or in the case of midi entries (powertab?) the files could be put up for download.
Also if anyone needs some knowledge on scales and/or modal playing, someone should be able to help (Ican, and i know Hylian knows a thing or two as well)
