The robust candidate hunched his shoulders as he carried a sack of glowstones. His current task happened to be replacing the glows in the rider's weyrs. The last couple had been empty of rider and dragon, so Falawny had slipped in and changed the glows. Poking his head into the next weyr however, the candidate could sense a large presence of a dragon.

"Hello? I'm here to change your glows." He squinted his eyes to see what color the dragon was. Was the rider home or just the dragon? It would be easier if he or she wasn't. He could slip in real fast and get the glows changed. Sometimes the rider was in and didn't want to be bothered. When that happened he would have to remember which weyr it was, and come back later when the rider wasn't around. Falawny hoped it wouldn't be a case of the latter.

There is someone is our weyr. I do not like it. Brynth spoke to his rider. The brown looked in and saw someone moving about as if they were searching for something. I would get here quickly.

He picked his bulk up and moved as far into the rooms as he could, his eyes whirling quickly with agitation. He rumbled to let the person know he was not happy.

Ja'syn had been down near the stock rooms when Brynth sent to him. It would not be good for his dragon to scare someone witless just because he was not there. Sighing, he gave a slight bow to whom he was speaking with and excused himself. Behave! It is probably a drudge or someone come in to take the furs or change the glows.

Taking the stairs up and up, going through some winding hallways, the brown rider found himself approaching his rooms and looking at the backside of candidate and caught the mention of glows. See? Now go lie back down. "Sorry if Brynth startled you but you startled him."

Falawny blinked as he heard the dragon shift then voice his displeasure. He had to come in and do the glows, but upsetting a dragon was the last thing he wanted to do. Oh he knew the tales that dragon's wouldn't hurt a person, but there was always the right time right? He considered coming back when hopefully the rider was around.

"Oh!" A startlement escaped him as the rider came up behind him. Falawny turned to the man and bowed slightly. "My appologies rider. I'm here to change the glows, but it sounds like he doesn't want me to. I can come back at a later time if you druther."

"You startled Brynth, that is all. He doesn't like to think of people sneaking about in our rooms. Do your duty and don't mind us." Ja'syn moved past and then turned and look back at the candidate. "You are new here yes? Or have I just not seen you aroudn?"

Deciding since he was in his rooms, he was going to get comfortable, the brown rider sat into a hammock strung between two corners and waited for an answer.

Brynth huffed and moved away from the ledge. He is a new one from outside the Weyr. Really, you must pay more attention to these things. The brown had settled back into his favorite spot on the ledge and closed his eyes.

"I see. I'm sorry Brynth. Wasn't trying to sneak, just changing glows." Falawny nodded and moved quietly into the weyr. He would get these changed quickly and leave rider and dragon in peace. Caught off guard by the question, the candidate froze for a moment. His mind ran through options of why the rider might be asking. Deciding it was just for conversation, Falawny resumed reaching up to take out old glows.

"I'm fairly new." He really didn't want to say much in front of a strange rider. "They say changing glows is the fastest way to learn your way around the weyr." He avoided looking at the rider or dragon; feeling slightly uncomfortable and that the rider's eyes were staring holes into his back.

Hmm. This one doesn't seem to know how to treat a high ranking rider or dragon. Brynth moved around. He did not like those who were disrespectful to him or his rider. The boy hadn't done anything wrong outright. Yet.

Ja'syn decided to ignore Brynth's remarks and focus on what was going on. The boy was being fairly quick about changing the glows but acted a little too jumpy in his mind. "I suppose that is the case though I would hardly know. I came from outside the Weyr and Impressed from the Sands. My name, candidate, is Ja'syn. And what shall I call you or are you fine with being called boy?"

Let's see how he responds to that, he told the brown.

Falawny put in fresh and tucked the old, used glows into his pack. There had to be an easier way to do this, he though. Particularly for riders and dragons who didn't like company. Perhaps a glow bundle. A basket with fresh glows, left just inside the rider's quarters; the rider could then change his own glows and set the used ones in the basket outside his door.

Good and bad. A basket, even small would be bulky. It would mean more trips to drop them all off and again to gather them up. The teen chewed his lip as he pondered the problem. His hands work automatically, until he ran out of dead glows to change there. Falawny turned and looked around the room for any other glowbaskets.

"A pleasure to meet you Rider Ja'syn. If you'd rather call me boy, I suppose that will work here since I'm the only one around, but I usually go by Falawny." Not seeing any more glows, the teen gave a quick bow. "Anything else you need?" Besides me leaving that is.

Ja'syn frowned at the boy, not liking something. Respectful enough. Nothing seemed wrong with him on the outside. Maybe it was the boy's nerves that got on his own. Nodding to the bow, Ja'syn responded. "Falawny seems to be a fine name. Tell me, are you from Benden because I do not recall seeing you around."

Falawny was surprised the rider didn't kick him out right away. He blinked a moment before responding. "Thank you. Not from Benden Weyr if that's that you mean sir. I come from a small mining camp." No need to say more than that. Would the rider be offended he wasn't weyrborn? Falawny wasn't sure what the rider could do in that case. Make his like hard, perhaps. It was because he had been Searched that he was here at all.

"A mining camp? And what did you mine? I came from a small cot hold and trained to be a merchant before Brynth here picked me out. From the Stands no less. I dealt with some miners who traded semi-precious gems." Ja'syn tried to recall what mine camps he had been too but everything before Benden that wasn't important was a blur.

Nothing was important before me. Brynth replied smugly. And I think you make him nervous.

Me? Make him nervous, He will have to learn how to handle being around riders and dragons if he hopes to Impress. Ja'syn retorted.

"Aye, a mining camp. My da and I, we mined stones out of the ground. He's retired, but my ma still cuts and polishes the stones brought up." Falawny wondered what kind of merchant the rider had once been. It really wan't his place to ask, plus Ja'syn was a rider now. That really trumped whatever the rider might have been before.

"It was really small. Merchants almost never came, and dragonriders never did." He was slightly more relaxed now that it seemed the pair wouldn't get irritated with him for being there uninvited. Falawny didn't mind that riders never showed up. It really was too small to be noticed, except by the bandits who wanted their hard work.

"Ah. Now that sounds like a difficult task. Not the polishing and cutting part but actually having to find the gems in the first place. Almost like looking for a needle in a bunch of hay." Ja'syn looked over the boy and decided he wouldn't be bad for a rider. But then again, who was he to pick out such things. "Maybe I came across your parents' work at a Gather or something. So if riders never came to your mine, how did you end up here?"

The boy gave a polite nod to the rider for about to disagree with him. "Polishing is just as hard at finding the raw stones sir. It's so fardling easy to ruin a good stone if you don't know what you're doing. Though digging 'em out is by far more dangerous." He glanced down then back up to the rider's face. "I guess it'll be hard if you don't know what you're looking for. With enough practice, it seems like you get a feel for where they'll be in what kind of earth."

"Perhaps you did." Who was he to say otherwise? "My da and I had gone to the nearby small hold to trade some goods. A searchrider found me then."

"See there you go! That is why there are so many people to do so many different tasks in Pern. I know numbers and stock. I knew how to haggle and find a fair price. And follow the rules. What about you, do you follow the rules?" Ja'syn asked casually.

Brynth shuffled to move closer and hear what was going on. He could have listened in on the boy's thoughts but that would have been rude.

"Someone has to do it." He nodded. Falawny was dearly glad he wasn't a drudge. Although, since coming here he seemed to be doing a lot of drudge work. A small price perhaps for a dragon. "Oh aye! Knowin' how to haggle for a good gem be mighty important." They had to get fair prices for their work to keep the small mining hold going. His dad had taught him that.

He eyed the dragonrider; suddenly wary. He thought hard about his next reply. What was Ja'syn getting at? Was he implying that Falawny wasn't following the rules. His eyes glanced toward the brown dragon as he moved closer. "Sure, always. The rules are important." Better to error on the side of caution.
