Karne was enjoying a hearty meal in the shade, not far from the river. He had run down a young wildebeest, a calf barely old enough to leave it's mother, and was ruminating to himself on the exquisite taste and how the young of any species were completely useless except for food. He thought back to his own days as a pup with scorn; as soon as he was able he left his mother and his mewling siblings, and set out on his own. To survive! That was the true test!
Survival. Not if you could run crying to mama; if you could go out on your own and survive the worst the savannah could throw at you, from crocodiles to hippos to droughts, flooding to stampeding zebras. Pups who had to cling to their parents weren't worth the time it took to feed them. That silly white hyena he had met was soft; obviously coddled, going on about pups and cuddling and love. It made Karne ill.
He pushed aside unpleasant thoughts of pups, and returned to his still-warm meal. Delicious.

How dare he eat that in front of her like this? All satisfied looking as if it was the most delicious thing in the savanna. Well of course it would help to say that she would be in his actual view but for now Razili was hiding in the brush nearby watching. Watching and waiting or rather plotting the best way to get the male to leave the fresh meat. Gods she was hungry. Hungry, but not too hungry else she would move and go chase down her own prey. It was too annoying to have to do such things by herself after all. She would rather have someone do it for her.
How would she do it today? Lions attacking? Diseases? Seduction? The hyena grinned. Maybe a bit of the last one with either of the first two ideas. She would decide after talking to this male. “Let’s see how gullible today’s target is.” Whispered the hyena to herself before coming out of the brush. Sashaying her way over towards the male Razili gave a small smile. “Hey, there.”

Karne looked at the female hyena, unimpressed. She was alright looking, but unless she raised tail he didn't really have much interest in other hyenas. He learned early that even other hyenas would steal his food, and tended to be extra on guard when someone approached him when he was eating.
He wasn't the most polite hyena at the best of times, anyway.
"What do you want, lady?"

Oh that was a good piece of meat. Razili could already feel her mouth watering. No don't. Just wait. Your time is coming for it Razili. It was almost a silent mantra in her head as she forced her gaze away from the prey and to the one who had managed to capture such a meal. Huh. Not the best mannered one nor did he seem to care that she was a lady. Razili was rather confident of her looks and felt disappointed in his response. So that method was out.
"Nothing. Just lookin' around." She replied her gaze watching him before she turned away in what appeared to be an uninterested gesture. But just as quickly she circled around and acted as if she just saw his food, "Oh!" Clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth the hyena appeared startled, shocked and dismayed. "You shouldn't! He - he had some of that...." She gulped for air, apparently very disturbed, "The disease...it's in the - the -" Her gaze looked right at the hyena before she pointed to his meal. "He had that last night. He's fertilizing the grass now just like the rest of that herd. All dying if not already dead. I couldn't save him - but you...is there a chance if you stop now?" She tilted her head studying him. "Maybe if you emptied your stomach of it...then the sickness would not grab you like it did him. Maybe."

Karne's eyes narrowed and he put his front paws firmly over his meal. She was putting on an awful lot of an act, but only after she allowed herself to look back at the meat. She wasn't upset about someone's death a few minutes ago. Grief didn't click on and off like that. A more gullible hyena might have tried to vomit. A more charitable hyena might have shared, but not Karne. Ok, so she was a hyena and she was hungry. So What? If she wanted some food she could hunt it herself; whole herds didn't die of a plague in just a few minutes. This meat was his.
"My sympathies for 'him,' whoever 'him' is, sweetheart. Probably just had a weak stomach. And about the herd, they're all dead already? Funny, they all looked perfectly healthy when they were running away from me when I grabbed this calf and tore it's guts out. But if by chance they all have dropped dead somewhere and I'm next, I'd rather go out on a full belly then vomit on a chance that you're not feeding me a bunch of jalopy. If I die midway through, you're welcome to finish it up though."
He took a big bite and chewed sloppily, showing off his mouthful of meat to the pretty hyena.
Not that Karne was completely unreasonable. He probably couldn't eat this whole calf - although he might try for spite - and he would be willing to share some. For some kind of nice compensation. Or you know, she could ask. He hadn't even started on the legs yet. Two of those would make a decent meal.

What a guy. Razili frowned at his response. He was far from gullible that or just plain stubborn. The female just stared at him for a second before sighing and shaking her head. "You're no fun at all." She commented as if disappointed in him. Really, who wouldn't want to be catious? Certainly she had laid it on thick, but she had seen results before. Often they quickly forgot the food when it came to talk of sickness and death. Or even before that when seeing her. She probably should have picked a more complicated plot despite the ease of the usual tricks. If gullible enough most would fall for about anything.
But this guy.
"Well I guess I'll just have to wait it out." She replied looking at him with faint, if slightly not morbid, interest. "I wonder how long it would take? A couple more bites or just when you've finally gotten full? Oh well. The vultures would appreciate a free meal themselves." She rolled her eyes as he showed off his mouthful of meat. Oh how nice of him. He was such a charitable one.
After watching him silently the hyena just sighed, "Are you seriously going to eat all of that? Even if the herd isn't stricken - which could still be possible - you'd get sick from over eating."

"Well if I get sick from over eating, you can eat my sick like a wild dog does. Or just be honest and say you're hungry, I know you are, you're eyeing this meat like you haven't eaten in ages. I'd be willing to part with some if you would just admit you want it. Otherwise I'll eat the whole thing, even if I roll into the river and a crocodile eats me afterwards."
Just to be more of a jerk then he already was, Karne ripped a mouthful off of the carcass and tossed it at the female's feet. "There, a present. Unless your scared of the mysterious wildebeest disease, sweetpea."

Eat his sick like a wild dog does? Razilli made a face at the male. "I think I'd rather just help you and push you in with the crocs thanks." She retorted softly before shaking her head. Hungry? Like she would ever admit such a thing to a mongrel like this? The guy was so aggravating. She turned to leave before being surprised by his action.
Oh?
She knew it as an insult, but ended up taking the mouthful anyway. As much as she was loathing this, she was admittedly starving. Just a little like this would be enough for her to be able to look for more food. Though she did wish that the meat was diseased. Even if she died from it at least that sucker would go down first. She would enjoy watching it. "Oh don't worry, even if it is diseased at least I won't die alone." Still she took her time looking at the meat despite her body's desire to just tear into it there and with slow deliberation she picked through the meat like it was nothing special. Though it was pretty delicious. Not like she would admit it.

Karne laughed, low and hard edged. It was a laugh for laughing at some one, not for laughing with them. He tore off another chunk and rolled it to her.
"Since you've already accepted your apparently apparent death, would you like another bit? Might as well go to the great beyond on a full stomach."
He was impressed with her determination not to admit that she had made all that garbage about disease up. She had guts, this one. And gams. Nice legs.

Humph. Razili refused to acknowledge that the male was actually laughing -laughing!- at her. So what if she had failed in her acting for once? She was still getting meat wasn't she? That was the whole reason she had even thought of approaching this guy. Did it matter how she had succeded? Still her pride was stung. Was she really so desperate that she could eat what was just tossed at her? Something she hadn't even really won with any of her acts or skills? Just why was he even tossing her food anyway?
As he spoke she looked over and shot him a glare, "Guess so." She muttered before tearing into the new chunk. If she wasn't so stinkin' hungry then this guy really would get a piece of her mind. Shoot! She wouldn't have even bothered walking his way or looking at him if it wasn't for her stupid, empty stomach.

His appetite was sated, but his desire to mess with the other hyena wasn't. He belched. "That was good, but I don't want to risk your health anymore. I guess I just ought to dispose of this, then?" There was still a good bit of meat on the calf - and if the two hyenas left it's close proximity, it would be swarmed by jackals and vultures in a few seconds. Instead of just leaving it though, he started dragging it toward the river.

Eww. What a male. Razili rolled her eyes at him as he belched. Though her gaze shifted from a look of surprise to quick annoyance at his next statement. Risk her health, eh? Surely he was just kidding. But no the other hyena was already starting to drag the meat towards the river. What? Did he want the crocs to have a good meal instead?
"Now hold on." Razili quickly moved to place a paw over the carcass, "If it's diseased I'm already going to die anyway from those few bites." She gave a small shadow of a grin mixed with a grimace of actually having to do this. "I'd rather the crocs got to live another day while I finished with this. Rather die quickly than slowly dragging myself and some poor fish folk down." Though you buddy. I wouldn't mind dragging down extra slowly. Not that she would voice that thought aloud. He still had hold of a good meal after all.

Karne saw the slight grin on the female's face, and couldn't stop himself any more. He burst out laughing.
"Alright, alright, take it. You deserve a decent meal for your acting, I'll give you that, sheba, you're good. If I had been a complete twerp, you might have taken me in. I hope you enjoy your 'diseased' wildebeest."
Karne sat down and watched as he waited for her to finish the meal, a huge mocking grin on his face the entire time.

Really? Was he serious? She didn't even care that he talked about her acting. She knew it was good for those gullible enough to believe in it. This male was just different from those she had run into before. Different in an annoying way. Yet...he had given her this meal. Razili just stared at him silently studying her options before shaking her head. "Don't worry I will." She muttered quietly to herself before beginning to tear into the meat. She had been hungrier than she had thought. The female gulped down the last of the meat before gnawing quietly on a bone.
But just as suddenly her gaze darted up to the male and she frowned at his grin. Then she looked back away to the carcass. Stupid males. And that stupid grin of his! What was his problem? Sure she had been acting, but he didn't have to gloat so much over her situation. Sheesh. "Am I that entertaining that you have to watch me eat too?" She commented sharply after pulling away from the bone to look back at him.

Karne gave a shrug. "You put on a good show and you aren't too bad to look at, so I'll sit here and enjoy the view. You don't have to be so grumpy, I'm feeding you, aren't I?"
Karne did have to admit to himself that she wasn't bad looking, but she was entertaining, and that was more important. He hated whiny females, and the ones that always just wanted to be protected. They were hyenas- get a grip and act like it!
