Ken's mother Rukia Shihouin was a very powerful member of the clan. Not only was she married to the clan head for her good looks but also for her extreme prowess in the clan techniques. She ruled the clan along side her husband for many years. During this time the clan enjoyed a period of prosperity and strength amongst those of Konoha giving several strong ninja to the shinobi army of Konoha.

However shortly after she began to bear Ken his father passed away leaving her and Kens father as the current rulers of the clan. She continued to rule along side her father in law mostly ensuring that the future heir of the clan was being nurtured safely until the day he was born. When February 11th finally came Ken's mother went into labor and soon passed away giving birth to him. This left Ken in the car of his grandfather, the current clan head and only hope for Ken's eventual succession to the role.

Ken's grandfather soon assumed not only the position of being the head of the clan when both his parents passed away but also his sensei. However with Ken being the last heir for their clan his grandfather focused more on being Ken's sensei and due to this ensuring that he was strong enough and yet also wise enough to one day assume the position that was rightfully his. Ken's training start when he was essentially 4 years old, what seemed as though it was just simple play was training as Ken's grandfather worked with him in developing his elemental abilities teaching him to bring out the raiton chakra that was typical of all the members of the Shihouin clan.
