Nora wasn't the type to forget about friends or family members. Quite the opposite: she was the type to deliberately remember them on a fairly regular basis, trading Facebook messages with them and always having plans to stop by and visit someone. That in mind, it was a rare source of guilt that keeping in touch with one of her favorite cousins (spoiler: they were all her favorite) had somehow slipped her mind for a couple of weeks. She hadn't even talked to him on the phone recently! Who knows what developments in his life she could have missed? Two weeks was long enough for him to have asked someone on a date and been on it!

He could have found a girlfriend and she wouldn't be the first to know about it. And that was completely unacceptable. There was only one solution: stop by for a surprise visit and devote some time to catching up with him.

And so, with one delicate hand she rapped on the door to his apartment before quickly returning it to her person -- she had a homemade, hand-frosted cake and tow, and it would be just disastrous if she dropped it. Now all that was left to do was hope that he'd gotten her text message letting him know that he'd be over, and that he'd open the door soon!

Surprise visits from Nora had become a familiar thing ever since he had come to america - rarer when he was boarding on Azure, but becoming more frequent ever since he got his own apartment.

As such, Daniel has quickly learned to go from asleep to presentable as quickly as humanly possible. The only sign that he's been asleep when he had gotten his cousin's text was his still slightly wet hair as he opened the door.

"Nora ! Hey !" He smiled as he side-stepped to let her in. Liddel was perched on a nearby chair, and all but perked.

Oh, she knew this girl ! She leaped down and meowed, rubbing herself against Nora's ankles.

"Hello, Daniel," she smoothly said, stepping into the apartment after offering him a bright smile. She made an immediate beeline for the kitchen, the happy cat closely winding behind her heels, and gently set the cake down on the counter.

A second later and the container's top was popped off, she had fluttered over to the silverware drawer and was rummaging around for a knife -- something that Daniel was probably used to. If she wasn't cutting a cake or making sandwiches or putting on some tea the moment she had walked in the door, either something was wrong or she was planning to shuttle him out to a restaurant a little later. She reached down only briefly to give Liddel an affectionate scritch on the head before returning to her task.

"It's always so good to see you," she said, while pulling out a pair of forks and setting them on the table. "I hope you've been doing alright... and you probably shouldn't let your parents know that you're having cake for breakfast."

Oh yes, Daniel. She had noticed the wet hair.

Nora made herself right at home and Daniel didn't seem to bothered. Once, his cousin's forwardness had been a shock, years ago when he had just started going to Azure Valley.

Years later, Daniel couldn't say he was too bothered anymore. Or too surprised that she's brought something with her. The surprise wasn't that Nora brought something to eat - the surprise always was what she did bring.

Today was a cake day. He never had anything against cake day.

"Sorry I've been so busy lately." He said as he took place beside her, sitting down. "Finals and all that, you know... I think you're done too, at this point ?"

At the last comment, he just smiled. "Im sure that can be our secret, doesn't it ?"

His relative didn't have anything against cake days either. "It's red velvet," she pointed out as she worked at cutting a unhealthily, shamelessly large slice of it for Daniel. After scooping it artfully onto his place she made no hesitation in cutting an equally indulgent piece for herself. "I hope you like red velvet. For some reason I can never remember who does and who doesn't. I can't imagine why someone wouldn't like red velvet, though."

Nora loved red velvet, and it was what she brought on an average of three out of five Cake Days.

"I guess everyone got a little busy for a while," she admitted, a slight sorry frown present in her tone. "But yes, I was finished with school weeks ago. Just one more year to go, now." Oh, she couldn't wait to get to college! Ever since Daniel had started, the topic of discussion always eventually led to her asking question after question about what it was like. Even the most disappointing of stories didn't do much to suppress her curiosity or enthusiasm, either!

She paused to enjoy a big bite of cake, closing her eyes with a sweet satisfaction that suggested she'd spent hours in front of the mirror trying to get the look just like. Knowing Nora, she probably did.

"Finals can't be the only thing you've been busy with all this time, though." Her tone was quickly taking on the velvety, sneaky quality that was probably all too familiar to poor Daniel. It was prying time already, it looked like. "So... what else has been going on in your life lately? Had any fun outings, met anyone new?"

And Daniel then just said exactly what he said everytime she asked that. "I like it, it's okay." Thankfully, given how often red velvet ended up into what he had affectionately nicknamed the 'cake rotation'.

The large slices weren't surprising either, and he accepted his without any complaint. If his father saw them now... Oh boy. Thankfully, his father was on another continent altogether, so the cousins were safe to enjoy more cake than they probably should have.

Something was missing, through... Ah ! He got up and went toward the fridge, rummaging around and finally pulling out a carton of milk. Cake without milk was a blasphemy as far as he was concerned.

"University's not that amazing." He let out an amused chuckle as he went back to his seat, milk and two glasses in tow. Sure, it was better than high school, but probably nowhere as glamorous as Nora thought it to be.

And there they went. He knew that tone. All too well. "I've become a monster magnet." He said. He didn't look like he was kidding. "This place is nuts, Nora. You're being careful when you go out, right ?"

"I hope you haven't been drinking straight out of that carton when no-one's around~" Nora remarked in a sing-song voice, as she eyed Daniel dipping into the fridge for milk. She didn't however, go so far as to reject a glass when it was poured for her, instead accepting the beverage with a chipper thank-you before returning to her cake. As daintily as she was eating, she'd still managed to pack away half of her slice by the time he'd started talking again. It was going to be difficult to resist the urge to cut herself another!

He had predictably brushed off her questions about university living, but the subject he delved into next was more than enough to keep her from prying any further. Her smile dropped a bit, eyes widening in concern as he alluded to his monster encounters.

"Of ourse I'm being careful, hon --" she replied, her voice turning hushed, as if she feared there might be monsters just outside living in -- "do you remember the accident that happened at my school a couple of years ago? They tried to pass it off as bad architecture or the support beams rotting or something, but everyone who was there swore it was a monster..."

The fork had been laid to rest on the table, even though there were still a good few more bites of cake left.

"Of course not !" He pouted, playfully.

"Yeah, I remember about that... That was one of the first weird things that's ever happened, wasn't it ?" On it own it would not have been a strange thing - it was the rumors that had made it strange.

And now, Daniel knew very well that they weren't rumors. He paused to take a bite of his own slice of cake. There was so many things he knew now, but most of it he was sworn not to speak of. And he wouldn't.

Now his curiosity was truly piqued, through. "None of this happened at Azure, at least not that I know of... it's strange..."

"Yes, it was," Nora recalled, curling a finger over her lip in thought. "It was also one of the first times anyone saw any of those sailor senshi, either..." Unconfirmed rumors, but rumors nonetheless. And given the way things had progressed in Destiny City up to now, such rumors were pretty easy to believe.

"I still have no idea what they're supposed to be up to," she continued, taking a small sip of milk as she pondered. "Some people saw them defeat monsters, others say they're nothing but trouble. I think I've seen one or two running around the city a few times, but I've never talked to one. Maybe that's for the better, though." A small frown. "You know... just in case they're really evil."

Daniel knew slightly more about what was going on - slightly. Just the tiniest bit, really. Through he couldn't speak about it, not really. He didn't want to jeopardize Ume's identity in any way.

"It was a senshi that saved me. I saw her kill the monster." That seemed safe enough - he was making quick work of the red velvet cake in between words. "A guy with a shield, too..." Maybe he should have asked Ume who they were.

But there had been so much emotion that night... last night. "I don't know what's going on, but they seemed to want to protect me ?" He had to play dumb a little, for believably.
