A GAME OF CARDS

Hello there. You must be the six participants that answered to our newspaper listing. For a sum of money you will be subjected to participate in our research. What do we research particularly, you ask? Dreams, mainly. What happens in our subconscious? How powerful can it be? Don't worry. You'll all be perfectly fine. Don't worry about the lack of employees either. We can't overload your poor minds just today, or else it might severely impact our research. Extremely scientific, I won't explain it all to you just now.

Oh, those metal braces around your arms right now? They're
nothing. Just something to keep you still. Care for a game of c a r d s while we wait?

Plot

A man named, ironically, Kingsley, originally created the research facillity for entirely logical purposes. He had a large sum of money and was curious as to what happened in his head during the night. So, in a remote little facility in a frigid ecosystem, he hired twenty scientists, state-of-the-art equipment, and started to work. As he grew older, he began to think perhaps he could live entirely in his subconscious. After all, dreams could felt like they've lasted hours, who was to say they couldn't last for decades? What started as a nagging idea started to eat away at him, to entirely consume his being, until all other projects were completed.

But who was to look after the facililty when he was gone? Could he really trust the scientists, who now lived in fear of him, to really keep him in his dreamworld? The answer came to him in the form of Antoinette, or her nickname, Queenie, his granddaughter. Only ten years old, she came to live in the facility and began to learn everything about the place. When she was sixteen, Kingsley died, leaving the entire facility up to Queenie. Queenie gradually began losing her mind for several reasons. For one, her only relative had died and she had no real friends to speak of between the twenty terrified scientists. Two, as a member of the experiment, her mind had often been tampered with and was probably not the healthiest. Three, she didn't know much about the outside world and lived entirely in an enclosed environment. Her only role model was her maniacal grandfather. She thought that was how they were supposed to act.

And now Queenie, now demanding to be called The Card Dealer, grew obsessed with another experiment just as her grandfather did: testing the survival extent of six people, chosen at random. How much could they last, psychologically, physically? So it began, with Queenie dealing all the cards.

Rules:

Besides the Card Dealer, there are six people allowed in the roleplay. Should a large need arise to add more, I'll add more, but for now, there are only six.

This roleplay is catered to constantly surprise and change, so we don't all get bored. But don't worry, no major events like a character dying will be determined by me, nothing that directly controls your character. Things like environment changes or supplies or bad/good occurences.

Swearing, violence, and romance is fun, just PG-13.

The six characters that will be available will be very basic bases, the actual character development will be determined by you.

For the age of your characters, anything about eighteen is fine, just keep in mind to keep it logical. The Doctor is not going to be twenty one years old.

PM the Profiles to me.

I'll add any more of these if I think of them.

Have fun. This should be a fun roleplay.

Profiles:

Broke Artist:

Username: katty_angel
Name: Drystan Cole (pronounced Dri-stan)
Character Base: Broke Artist
Age: 24
Personality: Drystan is a quiet individual. It's not just that he says little, but he also just has this air around him that makes the world just a little more quiet, just a little more soft. It's unintentional, as the young man doesn't really notice it himself. This is because he is completely lost in his thoughts. He is a dreamer and spends more time in his head than paying attention to anything that doesn't interest him. Makes him seem cold, a little stand-offish, and a bit mysterious. Again, it's not a conscious effort. It was just how he coped in his childhood. Sometimes it was better to be lost in his thoughts and inspirations than being in the real world. Still, Drystan is no airhead, and is actually rather intelligent. He can even be a bit cynical. But, he's a good person and when paying attention, is kind and just a bit sarcastic in his quiet way.
History: Drystan came from an average family, had an average childhood, and nothing really exciting happened in his earlier life. Still, he found it to be a dreadful experience. Average wasn't what he wanted, average wasn't something he could live in well. It was a dreadful experience because there was nothing there. There was nothing to get him excited, to inspire him. He felt like an outsider, a drifter in the sea of normality. It was not like it could kill him, but it was stifling his soul. It became more and more unbearable as time went by, as age proved it to him again and again that he did not belong there. That he was not like the rest of the people in his small hometown. It was untrue, but he was young and foolish, and a little too ignorant. So, at the first chance he got, Drystan left for the big city.

Drystan had always loved art. Any medium, any style, all those techniques. It was his escape and his sanctuary while he was growing up. It was his passion. So, when he came to the big city, he attended art college. He was neither the most talented nor was his art the most unique, but there was just something a little special about his art, something that all of the pieces he made convey that caught people's interest. It made him feel a little special too. Those four years of post-secondary school were easily the best years of his life. It was such a shame that the time when his schooling finished was not as good. For whatever the reasons, Drystan could not become a successful, professional artist. It was like all that possibly could go wrong did. He tried hard, but it was rather discouraging fail after fail. Money started to become a greater and greater issue, and even with taking as many menial as he could, he was struggling. It was almost to the point where he would have to go back home - something he did not want to do - or take up prostitution in order to get by. But then, he stumbled across the newspaper ad for some kind of dream research. The money involved was unbelievable and exactly what Drystan needed to get back onto his feet. So, he signed up.
Other: Has an hot-headed older brother that is also his best friend, though he hardly sees him. Has a bad habit of chewing on his nails. Not so much because he's nervous, but just something to do when there is nothing - or he's thinking. There is a touch of melancholy about him.

Secretive Doctor:

Militaristic Police Officer:

Kind Teacher:
Username: childof1000generations
Name:Alice Grey
Character Base: kind teacher
Age: 28
Personality: Kind and friendly to most everyone she meets, Alice is a woman who never grew up completely. She still holds onto her childish sense of right and wrong. She meets her problems with inventive solutions, and oftentimes is accused of being immature. Despite this, she can act rather motherly towards others, and is always ready and willing to lend a hand if someone needs help.
History: Alice grew up in a broken home, her father leaving her mother when she was only eight. Life was chaotic, and oftentimes Alice was left to her own devices. Her mother did the best she could to provide for her, but sometimes it was just too stressful for the woman. On her sixteenth birthday, her mother committed suicide and she was left on her own. Tossed from one orphanage to another, Alice eventually found a family that took her in and cared for her. However, the scar of her mother's suicide was deep, and she never forgot that day. Alice vowed that she would do everything in her power to help children never feel as helpless as she did then. That became her goal in life, prompting her to eventually become a teacher. She worked hard to make sure class was enjoyable and that she was approachable to anyone, even those who were not her students. She enjoys her job with a passion, and does not wish to do anything else.
Other: Alice keeps a photo of her mother in a locket around her neck. It is very important to her.

Selfish Businesswoman:
Username: GoldenSparrow
Name: Cyrena Dyvena De’chanelle
Character Base: Selfish Businesswoman
Age: 34
Personality: Headstrong and stubborn, Cyrena has made her way in this world by refusing to take no for an answer. She keeps her appearance as one of calm and collected, emotionless and unchanging as a sheet of marble; but, in fact, the gears inside her head never cease to grind up some scheme that will always leave her on the upper hand of things. Always. She is not one to be reckoned with, having never failed at anything she’s ever tried in life.
History: There’s not a lot Cyrena cares to remember – memories are weaknesses, after all - but she decided to go ahead and share a few details of her past with the scientists. Born into a rich family in upstate New York, Cyrena quickly learned the ways of money and high-society. With careless parents who paid her no attention, she grew up stiff, but headstrong. When her parents died in the fire of an arsonist on Cyrena’s sixteenth birthday, she resolved that it really was, in fact, pointless to keep anyone close. Cyrena lives for herself and herself only, never having attachments to anyone or anything. This is why she gladly accepted the offer of money in return for some harmless (harmless?) testing; she saw an opportunity that would only benefit her and she immediately took advantage of that.
Other: Before coming to this lab, Cyrena worked as a well known businesswoman in New York, with clients all around the world. She mostly worked as an agent - promoting and ultimately making the big decisions for various companies. Though rich as she was, with the inheritance from her parents going all to her (as her younger sister whom she never really, and still does not communicate with, refused to take any of it) she feeds off the satisfaction that she has the ability to make all the money in the world her own. It's what keeps her going, anyway.

Lazy Athlete:

Username: Whispering_Lovely
Name: James Sparrow
Character Base: Lazy Athlete
Age: 25
Personality: James is a lazy guy. Not to the point of extremes, just to the point of where he'd rather take a nap than go clean his apartment. He loves to have fun and is extremely laid back. When called upon, he is extremely athletic and quick-thinking. He's sarcastic and loves to tease, but isn't pleasant when offended. On that note, it's very difficult to get a negative reaction from him unless he's complaining about something. He can sometimes be disagreeable, stubborn, and irritating, but James does have a weakness for sweets and anything cute.
History: James grew up in an rphanage, though his parents died in a mass shoot-out when he was five. He was one of the oldest kids there, and so was often reqruited for helping with chores and the like as he grew older. Through these experiences, he grew to be fond of kids and cute things, but because of his lack of any realy family, he also kind of became a 'problem child'. He would run off without telling anyone, he didn't care much about his classes, and he had a very negative attitude. In high school, he started smoking cigarettes. He also took up skateboarding and Parkour, which he grew to love. Granted, he got arrested a couple times for tresspassing and the like during these activities, but that only made them that much more exciting. Thusly, after graduating, he took up skateboarding as a career, and has been a professional for five years now.
Other: James loves sweets, and cute stuff, but he likes to hide that side of him. He rarely smokes now, and hasn't gotten arrested since he was 17. Basically, most of his bad habits are gone.

...The first move of any game is the most important...

The six random citizens were chosen to go a secret facility to undergo scientific testing for a sum of money. When they responded to the snippet, they were given a gate in an airport and a time. When they arrive at the facility, they notice that many of the scientists aren't about. The only person they meet is someone via intercom, who orders them to go into a room and take a seat. They all do. The last thing anyone remembers is a short pinprick in the shoulder, as if a needle had pricked them from the chair. And then they all pass out.

When they awake, they are not in reality. They are all in their subconscious, having the same dream, able to communicate. It is identical to reality in every way except that instead of chance, fortune, luck, coincidence, or fate, the Card Dealer sits in a secret room, changing the details. Their ecosystem could change at any moment, their supplies could vanish or multiply.

The roleplay starts as they all wake in an ecosystem that will be decided on a die roll right now. It is as follows.

1- Arctic Region
2- Mountain Region
3- Grassland Region
4- Tropical Region
5- In the middle of the flippin' ocean
6- Desert Region

Starting Region: The Tropical Region. Folks, we are starting in the middle of rainforest.

This should be fun.
