It was hard for Adira to admit that she'd never had a S'more before, nor had she had the opportunity to sit around a fire that was not housed in some kind of container. The idea of a campfire was not new to the girl, and she had certainly seen them in her lifetime, but the aspect of actually watching it being built and being involved with the logistical planning of keeping a hundred or so children from burning themselves alive in the blazes lit around the camp proper was another thing entirely. With a bit of sigh, Adira sat herself on a sealed wooden log-bench at the last unoccupied fire on the entire camp grounds.

Bright blue eyes stared into the dancing flames, illuminated by the glow. She stared down at the little basket she had brought with her. All of the campfires had a similar basket, housing metal roasting skewers, marshmallows, chocolate squares, and graham crackers. She knew they were meant to make s'mores, and Adira could see the children around her eagerly stabbing marshmallows and toasting them to perfection.

It couldn't be that hard, could it? A bit hesitantly, the senior counselor grabbed a marshmallow and plunged it onto the tip of a skewer. Holding it to the fire, she smiled. Well, this was easy! Growing a bit more confident, Adira was pleased to find herself with a flaming ball of marshmallow.

Wait, that wasn't quite right! With a look of distress, she waved her flaming spear around wildly, trying to put the fire out. With a few seconds of oxygen deprevation, she managed to put the fire out. Sadly, Adira stared at the lump of carbon that had once been a delicious little treat. "Sorry little marshmallow." She spoke to it softly before commending the carcass back into the flames.

Expert at all things BBQ and campfire, Sam wandered up behind Adira. His ruddy tan cheeks were puffed up like a chipmunk. Which his mouth full of delicious gooey marshmallows, Sam spoke, “ Wha’d yo di’ tha’ fo’? Bur’t uns the best.” Talking with his mouth full made his words seem slurred, but still understandable.

Even though he was still in the process of chewing up his current sugary snack, Sam grabbed a few marshmallows from the bag and speared them onto his skewer. He held the marshmallows over the fire, not directly in it. Turning the skewer in his hand like a rotisserie, Sam kept the marshmallows over the flame for a short time. Simultaneously swallowing what was in his mouth, he pulled back his skewer and fresh batch of golden toasted marshmallows. He waved his stick at Adira, “You can have one of mine.”

"Oh, hi Sam." Adira smiled softly at the approach of the young boy, staring at his marshmallow prowess with a bit of envy. Certainly if a child could accomplish it, she could to. She just needed to know how! If only her phone received just a bit more internet she could look up tips on how to roast them properly! But considering they were stuck out in the middle of the woods, she was stuck asking and feeling dumb.

But Sam in the end saved her from the embarrassment by just going ahead and starting a new batch of marshmallows right then and there. She watched with a bit of fascination. So you had to turn it? And hold it close to the hot coals, not the fire, waiting until they puff up easily but don't turn brown.

Curious! "Guess it caught me a little off guard. Seemed a bit too far gone to be saved." Her marshmallow would have been more crispy than gooey, if it wouldn't have fallen to pieces of carbon about touching it. "I would love one, if you wouldn't mind." She gingerly took out the s'more mix, wrapping her set of graham crackers around the offered confection. Certainly looked like a perfect s'more!

She stared at it in her hands for just a second too long, wondering about the best way to eat it. Gingerly, Adira took a bite out of the corner, and upon finding it delicious, made short work of the rest of the sandwich. "So Sam, how are you liking camp so far? And how is everything else going in your life? It's been a while since I've seen you."

Sam didn’t wait for a cracker or chocolate. He just pulled a marshmallow straight off the stick and popped it into his mouth. It was gone in an instant and Sam quickly set about stabbing another set of marshmallows onto his skewer. “Ready to try again?”

He let the marshmallows roast over the fire mindless as he talked, rotating the skewer clockwise. “Camps alright. Keeping busy. I’m looking forward to the water fight.” That was the truth, sort of. Camp, so far, had been okay. Sure, the boy was feeling pretty tired most of the time, but that was because of all the fun stuff they had been doing. Wasn’t it? And ever since Sam saw the bulletin of events, he had been looking forward to pelting a few people with balloons.

Everything else in his life though? When it came to senshi issues, Perseus was definitely the person to talk to. But life issues? Was Adira the right person to ask? Sam’s soft brown eyes glanced over to his wise-adult counselor. Better to ask her, than his parents. “Umm.. it’s okay. I did well in school and it’s nice to be out now. But, um… I have a question for you.”

The boy’s eyes darted back sheepishly, settling on the flickering flames. “How can you tell the difference between when a girl is your friend… or…. You know.”

"I'm glad. While I won't be participating, I'm looking forward to watching." And hopefully it would also quell the seemingly incurable prankster that kept messing with her office supplies. She was still a little jealous of his marshmallow roasting prowess and the mindlessness in which he did it with. It wasn't as fun cooking them indoors, but she would have to practice in her fire place at some point if she was going to manage to learn without feeling embarrassed about it.

Adira looked a little confused when Sam mentioned having a question for her. She was more than willing to answer any questions, but she hoped for both of their sake that he veiled anything about being a senshi. It was far too public a place to have that kind of discussion. "Whats on your mind Sam?"

His question was completely out to left field for her. He wanted relationship advice? "Well...umm." She paused, thinking about his question before answering. Adira was flattered that he would ask her something as important as this, but she was quite sure what to think about it. "I suppose it all depends on how you feel. Do you think its something more?"

"I don't know." That was the truth. Up until recently, Sam hadn't thought that much about Ainsley. She was his friend, he supposed. He liked spending time with her. Now, he was a quite confused. It wasn't quite like spending time with Istas, or Lily, or even Adira. They were all girls, and his friends. But, around Ainsley, Sam was getting to be a little more tongue-tied then normal and a bit shy. It was an unusual feeling for the normally straight-forward and brazen kid.

"How can you tell if it's more? You have a boyfriend, don't you? How do you know that's different from other friends?" That was Sam for you, asker of tough questions. Though Sam didn't actually know whether or not Adira had a boyfriend, T.V. convinced him that all teenagers were in relationships.

"I..uh..." Did she have a boyfriend? Was Bo still her boyfriend? Was he ever really truly her boyfriend in the first place? Damn children and their knack of asking questions that seemed innocent enough but in fact were really hidden conundrums in disguise. "Its complicated, though I guess so." It may not have been the exact truth, but Adira figured she would keep it simple around Sam and hopefully he wouldn't ask anymore questions on the matter.

"Its different when your heart beats faster. When you make plans just to hang out and you get all nervous and excited about it." Adira turned to the young boy next to her, and moved to poke him lightly in the shoulder. "Is it possible you have your first real crush Sam?" Feeling a bit more adventurous, the girl picked up a skewer and stabbed a poor little marshmallow, moving to roast it to death. What a cruel world they had. Besides, nothing better to keep her mind off of relationship problems than focusing on someone elses and killing poor defenseless marshmallows.

His first real crush... Sam still wasn't quite sure. He wasn't ready to really admit being nervous around a girl. But, he did have a desire to hang out with Ainsley, and recently thinking about doing things with her made him excited. Nervous? Sam would deny it.

Adira preparing a new marshmallow reminded Ixion that he had one roasting. His thoughts had drifted away from the marshmallow, his brain had gone else where. Remember the stick in his hand, Sam pulled his marshmallow away from the fire. Too late, the marshmallow was already engulfed in flames. Blowing it out quickly, Sam was left with a slightly charred mess.

"It's complicated." Sam threw Adira's own excuse back at her, smiling cockily. Sam pulled his blackened marshmallow off the rod and ate it anyways. "Still good," he said through a full mouth. After swallowing he continued on.

"I... don't know. I like hanging out with her, and doing things with her. I made her something, but haven't given it to her yet." Sam paused a bit.

"It's not like I want to make out or anything." Sam blushed a little bit from the idea. Kissing a girl just sounded a bit gross, and of course, he assumed that was all people in relationships wanted to do. "That's what people with crushes do, right? That's what you did, right? I definitely ...don't want to do that. " Bleeeeh.

"Isn't it always." And it was the truth. Relationships were always complicated, regardless of how easy they seemed. That was what made it so hard to pinpoint what Bo was to her in her mind. In the beginning, he was ideal because he was uncomplicated. Nothing had to be done to impress, just the pleasure of company. And now it was more complicated, which tested the original draw of the boy. It made her head hurt to think about it for too long.

Adira choked a bit on her marshmallow at the next parts. "Kissing is not all a couple does Sam. In fact its a rather minor part. Being a couple is about spending time together, getting to know each other, that sort of thing." She sighed, pulling the other marshmallow out of the embers. This one at least was a little bit better, only a little bit black and mostly golden brown.

"Though making something for someone is quite interesting- what did you make her Sam?" Adira didn't want to say it yet, but it definitely sounded like Sam had his very first crush. Adorable!

“Always?” Sam pulled a face. It was always going to be complex and hard to tell what was going on exactly? The boy wasn’t sure he wanted to be an any kind of relationship if it was going to be complicated forever. “Always complicated? I thought, you know… it’s supposed to be easy. You find someone you like, they like you back, and you’re together all the time after that. I don’t think I want a girlfriend if it’s going to be hard.”

Checking on Adira’s marshmallow, Sam nodded with approval. “That’s better than last time.”

Sam turned a little red as he pulled out a bracelet from his pocket. The bracelet was a simple one, blue and white strings sloppily knotted together with a silver star bead in the middle. It was made using the supplies from one of the camp crafts. The bracelet had homemade by a boy all over it; it wasn’t exactly prefect, all the knots were different sizes and some where loose.

Oh, the bracelet was just precious! Adira couldn't help but grin as she bit into her newly made s'more. It was super cute, the kind of thing she always wished a boy would make her when she was little. "The only reason it's hard is because it's worth it. Life makes you work for the things that are good, because otherwise they wouldn't seem nearly as nice. It would seem average." It was a little hard talking eloquently with bits of marshmallow gluing her mouth together, but Adira doubted that Sam would mind much.

"Take courage." She smiled, leaving her teeth out of it. No doubt they were covered in remnants of marshmallow goo. "I think you should give it to her. It is a perfect present." It really was- not too assuming. It didn't scream 'be my girlfriend', but since it was homemade it was more thoughtful than something bought. "At the very least, it can be a gift that was made by thinking of a close friend. You only have to put as many expectations on a present as you want to Sam, giving it to her doesn't automatically mean that you are dating." Adira finished her s'more, letting him think and respond.

Sam watched Adira eat her marshmallow happily, absorbing her words. He grabbed a few more unroasted marshmallows and popped a raw one in his mouth before skewering another. Delicious. Sam was pondering on her idea of things being hard being better than average. “Does that make complicated things better? Is your boyfriend better, since it’s complicated?”

Then, before poking his new marshmallow into the fire, Sam looked down at the bracelet he had made. “I guess you’re right. It doesn’t need to mean anything.” Sam paused, looking at his handiwork than promptly shoved the thing in his pocket. “Nah it’s ugly… Ainsl…. Er… she wouldn’t like it anyways I bet. “

"Sometimes it makes it better. Its like... how do you know the good times are good without the bad times to compare them to? Without the other, everything would be neutral." Neutrality was all well and good for the most part, but it made for a very bland existence.

"Ainsley hmm? Well, rest assured your secret is safe with me if you decide not to give it to her." Adira reached over and ruffled his hair a little bit before burning the remnant of marshmallow off of her stick. "Though I do urge you to give it to her. I know she'd like it." It was the end of the night and counselors were beginning to shuffle protesting children off to their beds.

"You should probably get going back to your cabin Sam." She smiled in the firelight. "Think about what I've said." Just like she would think about what he had said. Did having a complicated situation make it better? From the mouths of babes...
