Some days, Tasso hated what had become of her life. Others she was hopeful, dreaming of what she could one day become. This day was neither - it was a gentle balance between the two, settling in the realm of a quiet contentedness, and the good weather and birdsong seemed to amplify that feeling. The pack had finally gotten big enough that her border guard responsibilities and hunting responsibilities weren't back to back, leaving her with a novel slice of free time in which she wasn't too exhausted to do anything other than sleep.

The young female wandered, a little bit, leaving the main area of Warugaruga lands just for a change of pace. Maybe if she weren't surrounded by the sounds and smells and thoughts of her warrior's lifestyle, she could pretend for a moment that she was a lone wolf who answered to nobody and relied on the comfort and approval of none. Of course, she was far too much of a social creature by nature to ever abandon her family. It didn't hurt to occasionally lose oneself in the realm of imagination, though, and as she wandered through the lightly wooded area she did just that.

Riitho was trailing quietly along the borders of the forest and what he figured was the borders of a pack. There were so many different scents, that he could say with near 100% certainty there was a pack nearby and he wanted to respect their boundaries, Perhaps the best way to honor their territory was just to leave, and get as far away from their scent as possible, but he really wasn't in the mood for respect. Which was really odd, Riitho was usually such a care free, shirt off your back type wolf, that when something was wrong, everyone knew it.

He sighed heavily to himself as he kicked a rock across the path he had chosen to walk. It wasn't that pleasant of a day, well technically it was a GORGEOUS day, but there's something about being used and left for nothing that just takes away all of your positive energy.

Just as the wolf was about to give up on his dull day of territory stalking, something caught his eye. A female? It sure smelled that way, and her coat was so stunning, it left the male wanting more.

Wagging tail and all, he perked his ears, and took a step forward. SLOWLY, her expression seemed a little spacy, so he wanted to be sure not to startle her.

It was unlike this particular lady to be distracted, but here she was, off-duty, off-base, and clearly paying little mind to reality. There was hardly much of a wind, be it for her or against her, and it took a significantly longer period of time for her to sense the presence of the stranger than it normally might. Then there was a scent - an outsider, and possibly male. Tasso cursed her inattention, her carefully balanced mood tipping more towards frustration and pessimism, and quickly gathered herself. She turned her head about until she located him with her eyes and ears, and an alarmed prickle ran across her skin. He was looking right at her - probably had been for a while.

"Who goes there?" She demanded, but there was something tired and resigned in her tone. It was a strange day, and her desire to meet the Warugaruga standard of aggression was lacking for some reason. Technically they weren't on pack lands... maybe her father would forgive her for being a little more lenient in this case. Her senses took him in, reading his body language. Interesting - his coat colours reminded her a bit of Arcadius. He seemed... friendly? Naive, then, to not understand the way of her pack. This obliviousness annoyed her and put some of the fire back in her blood. She drew herself up, proud and assertive.

Well that hadn't exactly gone as expected. One second she had appeared to be a spacy, gorgeous female, the next she looked as though she might kick his a** and leave him for dead!

The mere thought dampened his parade a tad and he slowly lowered his tail and ears, hoping to alert her of his non-threatening nature. "R-Riitho, I'm a loner, I was just browsing the territory, and trying to steer clear of the pack nearby, when you appeared out of nowhere...."

Slightly perking his ears, and lifting his head he tried to take in the female's aura, she hadn't seemed to threatening at first glance, but then he was never the best at judging anyone's character.... Not even those he had known for years.

"It wasn't my intention to startle you, my apologies for that, and if there's anything I could do to make up for it, I am at your mercy.

With a sudden pause, the male flopped onto his back with a thud, wagging his tail lightly as he tilted his head in her direction once more; grass and dist flicking into his eyes as he did so.

"See, I mean you no harm...

I just...

wanted to ...

meet you..."

Riitho began to mumble in embarrassment as he got closer to his main point, but he assumed she had heard him anyway..

Despite any superficial similarities, Tasso decided, this wolf was nothing at all like Arcadius. In fact, he was nothing at all like any wolf she'd ever met. Her head tilted slightly to the side in befuddlement. He seemed... not afraid of her, exactly, but somehow submissive. As the stranger exposed his belly, it would seem he was indeed at her mercy. If she were quick about it, Tasso could probably deal him a fatal wound before he could protect his vitals. It was a position she was seldom in, this position of power, and it was a nice change of pace from being unceremoniously walloped by those tough brutes that decided they wanted to infringe on her pack's lands while she was on guard duty.

And his assertation that he'd just wanted to meet her - Tasso certainly didn't know what to make of that. Some of the tension left her, but she was still wary. It could be a ploy to get her to let down her guard before launching an attack. Still... if he already knew enough to avoid the pack, then he was no threat, needed to be taught no lesson about Warugaruga strength. In fact - and this thought sent a unique flutter of thrill to her heart - he didn't even need to know that she was part of the pack at all. Maybe this was the perfect opportunity to try being a lone wolf for just a little while. What was the harm?

"Oh," she said at last, and then, finally making her mind up to go through with the idea, added, "You should be careful. The pack that lives there is dangerous. I thought you were one of them." Just telling the lie gave her a rush of adrenaline. Tasso had never done anything so impulsive in her life.

As the male lie there on his back looking up at this rather unreadable female, he noted that she seemed to be contemplating something. But then just like his horrible judge of character, he wasn't much of a reader either. Honestly he didn't really know what he was, but he would figure it out one day. Until then, there was no reason to dwell on his own defects, especially with such a gorgeous and unreadable female in front of him.

"Ah no, I just happened to wander here a few days back, and I picked up the scent of a bunch of wolves. I assumed it was a pack territory and since then i've been trying to skirt the borders a bit. No need to start unnecessary territory disputes after all!"

He grinned a bit, allowing his tail to thump roughly against the grass in nervousness.

Thank you for the warning -"

Riitho paused mid sentence just realizing that this female had never actually mentioned her name, only that she knew of the pack he'd been avoiding.

"Sorry, I don't think you mentioned your name.."

"Tasso," she blurted, and then immediately regretted how eager and young it sounded. The female circled Riitho slowly, watching the subtle cues of his body language. Come to think of it, his behaviour seemed eager and young. "You can get up," Tasso said, her voice and expression kept carefully level but the forward perk of her ears revealing her interest. "We should probably get a little farther from the borders. The circuit the guard takes is near enough here that one of them might notice us."

Oh, but how would a random lone wolf know that? She could say that she lived near here, that it paid to pay close attention to the movements of the local pack. But she didn't have a place marked out with her scent - if he asked to see her territory or did any sort of exploration of the area, it would be obvious she was lying. This whole false identity thing was tricky. Maybe she could just play it cool and not explain.

"Are you coming?" She asked loftily, or what she hoped came off that way, and with only a glance back at him started to walk away from her pack's territory.

"Tasso

Tasso..

That's quite a unique name!"

The male's eyes followed Tasso as she circled around him, he wasn't quite sure what she was looking for, but she was welcome to do all the inspecting she needed.

"Not that that's a bad thing! I mean Riitho is pretty unique too!" He beamed as he slowly rolled over again onto his belly at the female's permission. He chose to continue his submissive position, low to the ground, ears down, tail as still as he could manage. She seemed familiar with this territory and the nearby pack's movements. For a moment he pondered asking if this was her territory, but quickly decided against it. She might think it a bit forward, and he didn't want to be seen as that way.

Lost in his own thoughts, as to whether he actually seemed as weird as he thought he sounded, it took him a while to realize Tasso had begun to walk away from the area they had met in.

'Are you coming?'

The words snapped him to attention and he alerted himself accordingly, standing at attention but still far enough back so that Tasso knew she was in charge of the situation.

"OH!

Right! Sorry, I was caught up in my own thoughts there for a moment."

As Riitho followed slowly behind the female, the silence began to get to him. He hated silence, it was awkward and most of the time meant nothing but trouble! He didn't want trouble - no he wanted as far away from trouble as he could get! After all, that's why he was here in this unknown territory - to be trouble free, and forget the ones that had managed to tag along on his journey.

"So are you from this area, or are you kind of a wanderer like me -

Oh sorry if that's too personal, just my nerves talking!"

He smiled lightly and let out a small yip of laughter, hoping the female wasn't offended by his sudden questioning.

Although she briefly wondered what he had to be nervous about, her immediate attention needed to be focused on answering his question in a believable way. "Oh, well. I wander mostly, but I spend some time around here. Enough that it's worth being careful of the pack that lives in the area."

It was a good feeling, she decided, to lead. The mantle of responsibility settled pleasantly on her shoulders, and she did know where she was going so she felt confident about where she was taking them. "Have you had water in a while? There's a good stream not far from here." She watched him out of the corner of her eye, more interested than she really ought to be. This was fun, playing make believe with a stranger. Unlike most of the members of her pack, this Riitho guy seemed... nice.

Riitho nodded to let Tasso know he was listening to his story. His mind not registering that she obviously couldn't see that he was nodding. 'Earth to Riitho... you're BEHIND her..' Well that was a wake up call that would come in handy. Shaking his head slightly to clear it of his dozens of thoughts, he finally spoke up. Obviously that was something she could register.

"You sound alot like me. Never really born to settle, just meant to roam as you want.... It's a good life don't you think?"

Of course, he knew darn well the road could get quite lonely. In truth his little voyage of discovery had been quite lonely lately. It did him good to be around someone else for a bit, to talk, and be heard. Yeah, this was definitely nice.

"Well...

I guess rain puddles don't really count as a decent water supply.. so if you wouldn't mind assisting me I would be honored if you would lead the way."

The adolescent felt a tug of longing somewhere deep inside her heart. "It is a good life," she replied automatically, almost wishing the fantasy were real, that she were speaking from a place of experience. Tasso felt a little bad for lying to this obviously open and genuine wolf... but at least if he was a wanderer, she would probably never see him again, which saved her the risk of having to fess up eventually. It did seem kind of like a shame though. He could have been a friend... although her father would absolutely not tolerate friends from outside the pack.

"Honoured? That's a bit much," she chuckled, feeling a genuine smile creep onto her face. "I'm just showing you a good place to get a drink." Tasso glanced over her shoulder again, unnerved by her desire to keep tabs on him. Her ears pressed forward, listening to the reassuring trickle of water that she knew was only a short walk away.

Riitho paused in his steps out of habit, her comment had taken him aback a bit, but he quickly snapped out of it.

Usually other responded well to his polite mannerisms, but here she was telling him he may be a bit over the top? Well that was definitely something he could mull over - but not now, perhaps later when he was on his own again.

"Well that comment alone proves you don't know me well. In all honestly you're the first wolf to ever tell me I may be a little much. Regardless of what you meant by it. In my book that would be a compliment - though I'm not so sure you meant it that way..."

He paused for a moment as he awaited a reply from her, but the silence was too much, it was a shame to waste such lovely company.

"Without knowledge of you meant it, I thank you for the compliment...

As well as for the guidance you're affording me. Perhaps if you ever happen upon a place i'm familiar with I could return the favor?

Naturally his comment was actually a question. He was trying to pull information from her, curious as to whether she did quite a bit of traveling or if she was more dedicated to the land he had luckily set foot on.

What a weird guy! Slowing her pace so that she could look at him better, Tasso smiled weakly. “All I meant was it’s not such a big deal. I’m not doing anything special, and I’m nobody special, so I don’t understand why you’d feel honoured just to be led to a stream. To each his own, though.”

Picking her way through the undergrowth, carefully avoiding an abandoned badger set she’d tripped over a number of times in the past, she thought about how to reply. “Yeah, for sure. If our paths ever cross and you can help me out in some way, I’d appreciate it. I don’t know what the chances are of two travelling lones bumping into each other more than once, but,” Tasso kept her eyes straight ahead, feeling a bit embrassed as she said, “you’re the sort of wolf I’d be happy to encounter more than once.”

It was true, even if she felt strange for admitting it. He was just so gentle and harmless compared to the boys of her pack, and it was a nice change.

"Well, I guess its understandable that you wouldn't understand my viewpoint. But if you'd like I could explain it, it might be a little boring though so I suppose that's your call."

'That's it Riitho anything to keep the conversation flowing.'

The thought gave the wolf the confidence to continue the walk and talk he was having. Surely if she wasn't interested she would have left him for lost by now? Either way, it didn't matter, it was best to live in the here and now. That was the way to think!

Speaking of the hear and now, maybe it was a good idea to actual pay attention.

Shaking back to the present, Riitho focused just in time to hear Tasso's final comment. It was enough to make him freeze in his tracks yet again. His heart skipped a beat, and his tail began to wag excitedly. "If it's not too forward of me, I think you'd be one of those wolves I wouldn't mind bumping into again either!"

The wolf let out a toothy grin, and continued as he looked down at the ground in embarassment, "That's uh.. not a very long list either..."

Tasso grinned back at him, marveled by the simple wag of his tail. It was an expression of glee she didn’t see much, where she came from, unless it was coming from a puppy. His unashamed happiness was contagious, and she hesitantly allowed her own tail a little wag of its own. In retrospect, she felt stupid for comparing Riitho to any of her packmates. He was an entirely unique sort of creature, and much cuter than any of the males in the Warugaruga. Those little spots on his legs were so adorable, and the dark hood on his skull so subtle and yet masculine.

Wait. She did not just think that. Did she?

Flustered, she tore her eyes away from him and changed the subject quickly, hoping he wouldn’t notice that she’d been staring. “Just a little farther. I can hear the water.” She picked up the pace, forcing herself to focus ahead and not think about her new acquaintance, especially not the appealing things about him. She pressed on until at last they came out at a little stream that burbled peacefully and was, most importantly, a good safe distance from the nearest edge of Warugaruga territory.
