They were out on a nature hike basically, Istas and a few other of the girls. However the lilac haired girl seemed to fall behind boredly as she watched trees pass by and nothing really that interesting.
She even started watching what her peers were doing. Occasionally getting distracted by a butterfly. There was no bunny rabbits or turtles or squirrels or even anything cute and fluffy for that matter. Maybe they were so loud they were scaring them all off?

Jenna had fallen back as well, but for a reason. She'd managed to pack part of her breakfast to go. She was littering the ground with eggs, toast, and sausage. Humming softly as she continued to drop the food from her bag as discreetly as she could.
She wasn't trying to attract bunnies or birds either. She'd seen wild animals on tv and wanted to see them in person. She was sure they were friendly, you just needed to offer them food and make peace with them. Like you did with a dog, offer it food and than get to pet it. It was all so simple in her mind, really it wasn't hard at all!
She wasn't bouncing around, like she normally was, for two reasons. She was tired this morning for one and for two she didn't want to scare any animals off. She was after all trying ti lure them in.

When Istas realized what Jenna was doing she nearly flailed, before hissing. "What are you doing?" She asked with a frown looking at the other un-approvingly. "You're going to attract something dangerous."
The child stopped her hands on her hips looking at the other girl. Just because the other girl was older and was her cabin mate didn't excuse her from doing something dumb. "What if you attach a bear? We could all be eaten!"
She knew well enough what bears did, and she didn't believe they would just eat food left for them when there was a bunch of kids it could snack on.

"I'm trying to attract some other animals and make some friends, I want to see them up close." Jenna admitted, not seeing how dangerous or wrong her actions were. She was naive in that way, or just really dumb.
"It won't eat us, not if we feed it. I mean I did it with the lady down the blocks scary dog. He even let me pet him after I gave him some food." She was comparing a bear, or mountain lion, to a dog. Yes, she was lacking in some intelligence here. Or she really didn't have a clue that certain animals would be bad and hurt or kill people, too much faith in the goodness of animals?

Istas frowned when she heard the other's reply. This was not good. "No no no." She said with a shake of her head, "If you want to feed something there's a stray cat you can feed back at camp."
She shook her head, "It will too eat us if you feed it. They don't want egg and stuff... besides that's not nearly enough they'll go for things that are alive and try to eat us." Her arms crossed, "Plus that's a dog, dogs are dumb like that. Bears won't think twice about making a snack out of you." Istas warned.
"I should know, my grandfather's had to tell me plenty of times not to leave food sitting out they don't want to upset the animal spirits, but at the same time they don't want to be eaten by them either. Bears, Mountain lions, anything larger than a dog will want to eat you." The child's butter yellow eyes narrowed slightly as she scolded Jenna. It was only thanks to her parents and gander father she actually learned how dangerous these animals could be. Despite the fact her grandfather's people respect the animals greatly, it doesn't mean they don't also fear them.

Wouldn't a dog not just settle for eggs? But still be your friend. Why were these, larger, animals different? They wouldn't settle for a treat and let you pet them? But animals weren't bad, animals were good and didn't hate or have such negative things people did. It was what her parents once said, or something like that. She remembered that they'd once said animals didn't do anything outside of their nature, they didn't hate or judge people. Animals were pure her parents had said, it was why they should be respected and not hurt.
"So then I can't pet one, or see one?" She asked, upset, clearly, by this revelation . She'd gotten the idea in her head when they'd decided to go on a hike. "They wouldn't be nice..." She didn't understand. How could they not be nice? They weren't meant to hate, didn't they understand it was a snack and she wanted to be friends?

The child sighed, the other didn't understand. "You can't pet one no." Istas shifted on her feet trying to figure out how to explain it.
"You see. Even my grandfather's people respect the animals, and animals are good and help made the sun rise and fall according to the stories my mother tells me." There was another pause with a frown.
"Most animals are nice, but they see us and they don't understand we're not food. They have to live so they live how they know best..." She paused trying to remember how her grandfather had said it. "You see my Grandfather is a Cherokee Indian. He explained one time that 'Big bear maybe big, but he is also scared of two legged men. Despite his size he fears us because we can hurt them. They might not understand but they don't always know the difference between in wanting to be a friend and wanting to hurt them, unless you can speak with the animal spirits little Snow Rabbit.'" Istas held up a finger and imitated her grandfather the best she could. Of course Istas wasn't sure how her grandfather meant to speak with the spirits either. It was something she wasn't learning because she was in Destiny, though she also didn't know it could be considered superstition on her grandfather's part.
"You see... they don't understand we're nice. If we try to touch them they don't know we just want to pet them, they think we want to hurt them because of hunters." She gave a nod, which is basically what her mother had explained the last time Istas had attempted to pet a deer they had seen in the mountains. She gave a nod and smile hoping that helped clear things up.

Jenna listened to the other words, about the sun rising and falling with help. It was interesting, nothing she'd ever heard. She'd have to tell her parents, once she got home. They'd surely love to hear this, she'd have to look into it more to make the story better - fuller.
"Ohhh!!" She suddenly looked to understand. Putting it that way made a lot of sense. "It's because of the bad people, who hurt and kill them. I'd be scared of every person too." Nodding she seemed sad, over how people treated animals. For all her energy, and naivety, she really had a big heart - especially for animals.
"People shouldn't hurt them, they're good - like you said." How people could hunt and kill animals upset her, it was why she'd gone vegetarian all on her own. To think of eating an animal made her ill.
"I guess trying to bribe them with food then would be bad. They'd see me and get scared. I don't want to scare them." The food was put away, back into her little carry bag. "Thank you, Istas, for explaining that to me. I'd never want to scare them." A firm nod of her head.

Istas smiled softly as the other seemed to finally understand. She then nodded, "Yes, that's why." She hummed, she still ate meat but mainly because most of it was tasty and her parents seemed not to mind so it seemed okay. Considering her grandfather and the tribe, all used every part of the animal giving blessings.
She nodded, "My grandfather's tribe only hunts them for food and they make sure to use all parts after giving blessings to their spirits. They don't hunt more than they need either. I know others do it without thinking of the animal spirit's feelings so mother earth isn't nice."
She nodded, "Yes they'd think you're trying to hurt them. That's what grandfather says a lot of people do that want to hurt them." She nodded, "So yes scaring them worse is bad. We have to try to respect them."
She smiled, 'I'm glad you understand. Not everyone does." She pondered, "I might can help at least find a deer, but I won't go looking for bears or anything dangerous." She said as they kept walking, "It'd be better at night though."

"At least they don't kill them for no reason, like some people do." She said with a smile. She understood, they'd learned in school about Indians. "It's good they use the whole animal, it would be mean to the animal if they didn't." This said softly, sadly. How people could do other wise, kill for sport, was beyond her. Maybe when she got older she'd be one of the ones to fight against such things. It was a likely scenario really.
"We could try tonight, to find a deer then?" At least they could see some wild animal, deer were pretty as well. Maybe they'd see a baby deer, they were adorable.
"I think we should catch up to the others." Noting that it seemed they'd gotten left behind. "We can make it a race, add some fun in to catching up to the others." Not to mention it was something more to do. She had felt really drained this morning but it seemed that her energy was back for right now.

Istas nodded smiling, they could try at night. Worse thing that could happen was they could be caught by a counselor and told to go back to bed.
She paused realizing they had got left behind. "Okay!" She said with a giggle, "One the count of three?" She paused in her walking to count ready to run, "One...... two......... THREE!"

Being caught by a counselor couldn't be that bad, right? I mean they meant no harm, and wouldn't be doing something malicious. So there should be no problem.
Letting the other do the count down, stopped and waiting, she took off on the three. Laughing as she took off, camp really wasn't that bad. Her parents had been right, she'd have to tell them that when she got home.

The rest of the hiking trip was interesting they got to see all sorts of bugs, like butterflies and dragonflies. As well as a few squirrels and rabbits, they might not have been bear but it was more interesting than nothing at all.
By the time the group was back it happened to be getting close to supper time and Istas told Jenna she'd see the other girl later. She wanted to catch up with someone before eating, so giving a wave to Jenna she headed off towards where she knew Sam would likely be at.
