User Image 'I'll be back, then we can go to the humans large amusement park!'

How many years had it been? How long had she been loyal for? A long time, and she'd continue. She was loyal, this was her downfall. She'd never leave this cliff until he returned, and she believed he would! He had to! He promised! He would never break a promise! If he was hurt or sick maybe he took some time to get better, right? She always had excuses. She always had reasons. Despite how she wanted to sometimes move away from the cliff to take a walk, to stretch her legs, she never did. Why would she? If he came back while she was gone then she would have wasted her entire time, and he'd think she ditched him.

Today the sun was setting and once again she saw nothing. A couple had walked by and her heart ached. They were happy, why wasn't he back to make her happy? No, she was happy waiting for him! Right... because to not be happy meant she wasn't happy waiting for him... and she was... she really was! He'd come back! He'd never break a promise!

He'd come back.

User ImageApries found himself wandering further and further from the desert. This world was strange, green and filled with water. And cold. Pri has never realized just how used to hot weather he was until he found himself being thankfuly for his fur. How very odd. The lack of harsh weather made him wary of growing soft in this lush world, with it's bountiful food and shelter.

But really what threw him the most was the water! In Kemet there was the main river. They had the dry season, in which is never rained, and the wet season where you were plauged with storm after storm. The river, shrunken in the dry weather, swelled to several times it's size. As it retreated it left fertile soil, in which plants grew with almost gleeful abandon. That was their soft time, the time after the rains. In a place with water and food everywhere, how tough could these strange foxes be?

It left Pri longing for home. He was a little scared of how he would be recieved though. As the oldest son he knew his father and younger brother Marius were less than pleased with his choice to wander. Maybe that was even putting it mildly....

But this newest sight made Pri want to run for home, hostility or not! He almost whimpered. How could so much water be in one place like this?! It was unending! The air had an odd smell to it, one he'd never before encountered. New birds, animals, plants. Though it would have been foolish to think he wouldn't have encountered at least a few new things, he'd never thought it would be on this large a scale.

With all the shock to his system, it took Pri a few moments to notice he wasn't alone. Sitting at the edge of the tall cliffs, much too close to that large expanse of water for his tastes, was a vixen. Her white coat made her stand out, and he could see her tail reasonably well enough to be sure she was a she. Maybe this female could answer some of his questions, then he could leave this....overwhelming view behind for now.

Slowly and cautiously, almost like he was afraid all that water would spot him and swallow him up, Pri began to move forward.

The footsteps behind her.... was it finally him? Lani-Ai swished her tail fluidly and gracefully out when the person came closer, touching the person under the chin the the fluff of her tail. They used to do this as their way of a greeting when he was around~

"You're back!" She squealed. turning around only to be meet face to face with an black, orange, and white male. Her eyes widened, taking on tears before she could even speak. Oh, it wasn't him. It was....someone else. She had thought since someone was approaching that.... No. It wasn't him. Her head lowered, ears flicking back as her body took on a submissive form.

It wasn't him.

"I-I'm sorry I thought you were someone else..." She nervously stammered, blinking back tears. Why was it never him? Why was it this male? She liked when people visited but... Why hadn't he said anything? She would have known it wasn't him if he had said something... But then she had to go make herself a fool. "I'm really s-sorry."

Pri blinked, still a bit taken aback by the sudden swing of the tail. It wasn't that his family wasn't physical demonstrative in their love, it was just Pri hadn't had much experience in affection outside his family. He was still wondering what that chin tap meant, when the female spoke.

Wow. He felt like a total p***k. He hadn't even done anything, and he just wanted to throw himself off the cliff into that horrible body of water below. Pri couldn't help it though. The utterly heart-broken look that vixen had given him...

"Ah, i-it's alright," he said, stammering a little bit of his own answer. "I didn't mean to creep up on you. Y-you just seemed focused on something, and I didn't want to interrupt you if you were thinking." The reason had seemed like a perfectly good one at the time, but it still didn't ease that feeling of guilt for causing all this distress in the vixen.

Lani-Ai rubbed her eyes, sniffling slightly before nodding. Yeah, it was a good reason, and she should probably stop crying. Soon. He was stammering and looking guilty, he probably thought it was his fault she was crying! No, it was Lani-Ai's own fault, she shouldn't have been so eager to assume... Her ears were still lowered, cheeks flushed and eyes red when she looked up at him, however she smiled sweetly and reassuringly.

"N-No. I was just thinking, but its the same thing I always think so it's okay." She said back, clenching her throat to stop herself from stammering. Now she was nervous, she was a fool and he knew it. She had touched his chin and didn't even know him! Granted it was an accident, but still!

"Did you need something?" In the back of her mind she was slowly panicking. Worried mostly. He was going to think she was a fool! Why was she always so nervous? Oh deities.....

"Oh-oh yes," Apries stammered, and had to stop to collect his thoughts for a moment to remember exactly what he'd been about to ask the female in the first. place.

"Ah. Well, you see, I come from a land where there's very little water. This, this water everywhere-." He paused to look out at the view, then back at the female. "What's it called?"

She blinked, unsure what to say. Did he really not know? Oh wow. Did that mean he couldn't swim? She almost laughed at that, blushing slightly. That was kind of cute. Shaking her head, she looked at the water, head tilting and glancing back at him. "The ocean." She said, smiling. "Do you not know what an ocean is? It's salty, unlike ponds or lakes. It actually doesn't taste that good, but it's fun to swim in. Also, sometimes there is good food nearby the ocean like crabs."

She smiled, clearly not making fun of the male. She looked down at the ocean, grinning once more. "It's really pretty when you get up close, I can point you to a path that takes you down to it, but....I can't leave here." Her smile wavered, but returned instead of turning into a frown.

Pri looked at the water with a bit of awe now. "That's the ocean? I thought Jaci was just teasing me when she told me about how big it is." He was pretty sure she'd exaggerated just a little about swimming across one, but she'd insisted that it was just a thin channel that divided the land she came from from the land that was Kemet. Even so...

He was about to respond to Lani-Ai's offer, when everything she'd said finally came though. "You can't come with me," he asked, tilting his head to the side inquiringly. "Is there something wrong? I promise I'm not a creep," he hastened to add, just in case that's how he came off. Pri felt himself subconsciously shrugging his shoulders to better settle his wrap-like scarf.

Lani-Ai looked down, pawing at the dirt. "N-No I don't think you're a creeper, I swear!" She said, shaking her head rapidly, biting her bottom lip. "I... m-my....my...boy...friend... He promised a few years ago he'd meet me up here, so I have to wait!" She said, nodding as if this was natural. Her smile was fake, though some would not be able to tell. She tilted her head, smiling sweetly despite the pang in her heart.

"So, you should go down that path! If you need me, you can yell. I'll see if I can help!" She smiled at the other. "But there probably isn't anything down there to scary!"

Pri looked confused for a moment. "Your boyfriend? But we'd only be gone a few moments. Surely he if he arrived while we were gone he would wait for you to show up? I'll even come along with you and apologize for stealing your time." He couldn't have said why he didn't just follow the vixen's directions and go off on his own. Perhaps he was nervous of the thought of being alone so close to all that water without someone around who could tell him what was going on.

She looked at the boy, then the ground. Should she? It would be good to leave the cliff. However, no... she couldn't just leave him! Then what if he came and saw the empty spot? Lani-Ai shook her head, biting her bottom lip. Oh, she wanted to. She did! But she couldn't! No, she just couldn't bear to. She seemed to be tearing up again, easy to bring to tears. She sniffed, shaking her head quickly.

"N-No it's okay. I'll wait here. I-If you need me just call my name, Lani-Ai." She hoped he wouldn't be offended, she'd hate for that. Though, she doubted he would care much. He would be gone and leave her. And she'd be alone again. Though that was her life, she was used to it.

Pri's face crumpled into a thoughtful frown. "What if he forgot, or mixed up the days. Are you going to wait here all night long?" He honestly couldn't imagine a relationship like that. It did seem a little contradictory though. If he fell madly in love with someone he'd make sure he always knew where they planned to go and when they planned to get back together, should they part. To sit and wait for someone was romantic. To keep someone waiting...

No, better stay out of it. After all, what did a fox who left his home and family to travel aimlessly know about how connections should and shouldn't work? Best keep his nose out of it. Anyway, Lani-Ai's boyfriend would probably show up at any minute. Why else would someone keep such a pretty and friendly vixen waiting?

She looked away, pawing at the ground and her nails dug down. "He never told me when... I wait here every night. It's been...three years since he promised he'd come back. But, he promised." She smiled at the male, head shaking. She didn't know why she stayed anymore. No! Wait! Because he loved her! No, wait, she loved him! Wait... she knew why of course...Right?

She pawed at the ground once more, a thing she did while she thought. "What is your name?" She asked, looking up at the male. Something to remember him by, so, if her.... boyfriend ever came back (of course he would!) she could tell him about her new friend.

"Three whole years," Pri exclaimed incredulously. A rush of emotions slammed into him, one after the other so that he hadn't finished reeling from the intensity of one when the next hit.

First he was impressed. To devote three whole years of your life with nothing more than conviction and blind faith showed a tremendous will! Pri hadn't even managed to stick around Kemet long enough to see if he could carve out a place of his own, taking the easiest path of solitary travel.

Next was shame. Was he that weak? He was the first born, a first born son! He should have stayed. So what if it looked hard, and he felt like he was drifting in the seas of sand controlled by Set. He should have manned up and done his duty! Look at Lani-Ai, she'd been here for so long just because of a maybe.

Then a seed of cold rage began to burn in his stomach. Not at Lani-Ai, or himself. Who did this male think he was?! To just decieve a vixen like that, then vanish. She'd been holding on for so long, how was that fair?! She deserved more than that, and this creep was just looking for an easy way out. If he'd appeared at that moment, Pri might have even snarled at the male.

A mix of other emotions. Shame and resentment for jumping to a conclusion, for he didn't know the other half of the story but wanted so much to be mad at the male. Concern and pity, for Lani-Ai was certainly not in a good place at this moment. If she was placing a lot of herself on this wall, well; all walls crumbled eventually... Protectiveness and hesitancy; who was he, some stranger she'd just met, to want to take care of her? What right did he have to even try?

All of this flashed through Pri's mind in the span of three heartbeats. It had probably been such a jumbled mess on his face that he might as well have been expressionless. Pri hesitated, then took a deep breath and plunged in before he could stop himself. "You must be really hungry then! I-I'll go look at the ocean, and see if maybe I can catch something for you. I'll be back with some food tomorrow, i-if you're still here."

Overcome with embarassment, Pri stood and dashed down the path Lani-Ai had indicated. It wasn't until he was out of sight and out of calling distance that he realized he had forgotten to give her his name.

The male had been silent for some time, and Lani-Ai had wondered if she upset the male. Then, he sputtered something, ran off, and left the vixen staring. She was unsure what to do with this information, eyes following him as he ran off and vanished. Her mouth opened, letting out a soft "Wait" that didn't reach his ears. The vixen looked down at the ground, tail curling around herself.

He'd be back tomorrow? Why? Her ears flipped against her head, body hunkering down and curling into a ball. Either way, she was tired and should sleep. This strange encounter had left her confused and...hopeful? It was nice to actually speak to a living being.

So, she closed her eyes, snuggled into herself for warmth, and fell asleep. Such a strange boy, who didn't even know what an ocean was!
