Rules & Privileges Review

Prior to posting, it is imperative that the rules of Conduct, Story Content and Member Privileges are understood.

Conduct

Members of this guild are expected, as members of Gaia Online to follow the Terms of Service and the Rules and Guidelines.

As such, cursing is not regarded as offensive, and discussions of mature matters are not discouraged. However, one should discuss such things with class and tact.

Politeness is strongly encouraged.
When critiquing stories, it is best to also refrain from rudeness, such as:
  • Flaming OP (This level of rudeness is grounds for banning)
  • Superficially critiquing their work, ei: "it was nice"/"it was bad".
  • Offering only negative constructive criticism: try to include something positive.
  • When posting pieces of writing in Created Realms, it is nicer if one also critiques some other stories instead of wanting critique for themselves without offering any to others.

You most likely will not get banned for being rude, but if you're so rude that you're causing others grief, you may eventually be banned.

Admins/mods/OPs may ask sometimes for anyone being rude in the aforementioned ways to stop.

Role-Play & Story Content

While it is clear and obvious that PG 13 is somewhat enforced throughout Gaia Online by its mods and admins, and what have you, this guild will be lenient about role plays with slightly more gore, and slightly more mature role plays. This, I strictly state, does not mean that cybering is encouraged, allowed, or tolerated. Nor are ridiculously, blatantly "R" rated role-plays permitted. Let me make this clearer:

Gore is tolerated to an extent.
Gore:
  • Blood that has been shed, esp. as a result of violence
"the film omitted the blood and gore in order to avoid controversy"
  • Dirt, filth; Blood, especially that from a wound when thickened due to exposure to the air
Any and all gore must NOT be too explicit for the sake of being explicit. Gore must be related to the plot of the rp. Violence must be treated in a serious manner. Violence falls under the jurisdiction of "gore". Senseless violence and gore-containing rps will be warned. To be a bit more specific, it must not be more gorey than the goriest gaia item. If the content is not changed or removed, the rp thread will be deleted.

Any and all role-plays with gore within them must have a warning in the OP. If a role-play is not "gore friendly", do not rp gore or violence within it. To determine whether or not a particular role-play is, either ask the OP, or check the list of gore-friendly rps. Again, "gore friendly" rps may ONLY contain an acceptable amount of gore/violence.

Sexual Themes are tolerated to an extent.
Characters may be sexy, and it may be *implied* that characters engaged in sexual acts. (There are no warnings for cybering or making cybering requests. An instant ban will be issued to all violators of this rule.) When discussing sexual themes in role-plays, it is imperative that it is done with grace, class, and discretion. IMPLIED is best. EXPLICIT will likely result in deletion of the offending post/thread. Multiple violations will result in a ban. It is important to note that not all individual rps will tolerate sexual themes.

To make this clearer:

  • Sexual themes: References to sex or sexuality (ESRB Ratings)

  • Sexual Content: Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including partial nudity (ESRB Ratings)
  • Strong Sexual Content: Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity (ESRB Ratings)

ONLY IMPLICIT "SEXUAL THEMES" ARE TOLERATED.

BEFORE ROLE-PLAYING anything with sexual themes in another's thread, ASK OP if it is acceptable, if the answer is not listed within their rp rules.

Disturbing Images are not tolerated.
Violent, gore-infused, sexual, any image which can incite, shock, or disgust others are NOT allowed, under ANY circumstances. We may be lenient toward written expressions of gore and sexual themes-- when implied-- but images are NOT tolerated. Artistic renderings with a bit of blood and perhaps missing limbs, and grasping lovers NOT engaged in sexual acts are permitted. But the line is a thin one, so we express strongly that class and care be taken when utilizing images. We stand on the very same ground Gaia Online does with this one, but making this clear is a priority.

ALL VIOLATIONS OF THESE RULES OF RP CONTENT WILL BE DELETED, REPORTED TO GAIA ONLINE MODS, AND/OR THE USER WILL BE BANNED.

If you are unsure about the gore/violence/sexual themes in your rp, PM me or Herr Mannelig, and ASK if it is acceptable. I have no life, guys. I'm here to help.

Sharing Guidelines

  • Display your work's title in the thread title. If it is untitled, write "untitled".

  • Specify if your work is a poem, a short story, an introduction, etc with the following key:
    [P] work is a poem
[SS] work is a short story- Short stories must not be longer than 2500 words. If they are, please submit the story in parts/chapters. Thank you.
[Ch] work is a chapter. Number the chapter, for example chapter 2 would be [Ch2].
    [O] work is random anything
[F] work is a fanfic Be sure to state the FANDOM in the short intro before your work.

  • Please warn if your piece may not be appropriate for all members. Utilize the following tags to inform your potential reader.
[V]- contains violence (no matter how miniscule)
[G]- contains gore (no matter how miniscule)
[T]- contains sexual themes (no matter how miniscule)

For example, a fanfiction that contained violence would be labeled as such with "[F][V]" or "[V][F]". PM Herr Mannelig or me if you are unsure. Any mislabeled works will be properly labeled by staff without notice.

  • Spell-check your piece before sharing, proof read it for errors and typos before sharing as well.

  • Include a short summary or introduction to your piece before sharing.

  • Please do not share your pieces in eye-raping colors or font sizes.

  • To make the OP cleaner, it is suggested that the piece be displayed in a quote. Simply surround the piece in the following code:
    [quote][/quote]

Critiquing Guidelines
Strive to critique and give as much feedback, as well as plenty of detail. Here are some suggestions for providing feedback from my point of view. (writer) You do not have to go through this when providing feedback, these are simply some in depth suggestions.

  • Explain the...
    feelings
    thoughts
    ideas
the piece evoked in you. If it did not evoke any, make note of it.

  • Analyze the piece: what did it imply? Did it attempt to imply something? Did it fail? Was anything confusing? If something was, did it appear to be done on purpose?

  • Check the descriptions. Were they lacking? Were they purple-prose? What do you suggest, what do you think of their descriptions?

  • Did the characters appear one-dimensional? Were they developed to a satisfactory level? What do you suggest?

  • Dialogue: was it bland, useless? Did it add anything? Did you perceive any importance in the dialogue?

  • Grammar, spelling, punctuation: were there any glaring errors in those three areas that distracted significantly from the piece? Was the punctuation utilized in a creative manner, or to provide emphasis?

  • Overall: what do you think of it overall? What do you suggest? What did you dislike; what did you like?

Herr Mannelig
WHY THE GUILD RULES DO NOT VIOLATE THE TOS OR R&G

This covers anything mentioned in the Guild-wide rules that is also mentioned in the TOS or R&G. Red text means it is from the TOS, orange text means it is from the R&G.

Prohibited Conduct, item 12:
BY USING GAIA ONLINE YOU AGREE not TO: post, request, or link to sexually explicit material or conduct;

The RP/Story Content Rules does not encourage the posting, requests, or links to sexually explicit material. It tolerates IMPLICIT instances of sexual themes to occur in written form.

Explicit =/= Implicit

  • Explicit- Adjective: Stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt. (Dictionary.com)
  • Implicit- Implied though not plainly expressed. (Dictionary.com)
arrow Implied- Adjective: Suggested without being stated directly (Wikipedia)

Prohibited Conduct, item 17:
BY USING GAIA ONLINE YOU AGREE not TO: engage in any other conduct prohibited by our Rules and Guidelines.

The Guild-Wide rules of Conduct almost directly echo the R&G's stance on conduct with other users:

Interacting with Other Users on Gaia, item 7:
Be Constructive: When commenting on artwork or reviewing web links, please try to be constructive in your criticism or balance criticism with praise. If your comments are excessively insulting or vulgar, action may be taken against your account.

The Guild-wide rules of conduct, however, expand upon the aforementioned rule and cater it specifically for roleplay and writing criticism.

Interacting with Other Users on Gaia, item 8:
No Cybering: Soliciting or engaging in cybersex (exchanging descriptions of sexual experiences) or mature content role play is not allowed on Gaia Online. Making sexually suggestive or explicit posts can result in them being removed, and action being taken against your account.

The Guild-wide Story/RP Content rules specifically state that anyone cybering, trying to cyber, or posting lemons in the writing subforum are subject to an instant ban and notification of said actions to Gaia moderating staff.

The R&G states that "making sexually suggestive or explicit posts" is against the rules. This Guild allows for implied sexual themes in writing. It is believed by the staff of this guild that being "sexually suggestive" in the context of cybering or with the intention to cyber is very different from the artistic use of implied sexual themes. Any sexual themes allowed in the guild would be implied with much class, tact, and lack of vulgarity or overtness. Furthermore, the definition of sexual themes and what I take Gaia to mean by the above, "sexual content", vary greatly.

  • Sexual themes: References to sex or sexuality(ESRB Ratings)
  • Sexual Content: Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including partial nudity (ESRB Ratings)
  • Strong Sexual Content: Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity (ESRB Ratings)

Of the aforementioned definitions, only the definition of "sexual themes" would be tolerated.

"mature content role play is not allowed on Gaia Online"

The intention and desire of this guild is to avoid violating this rule.
  • Mature content: Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language (ESRB Ratings)

Allow me to repeat, "mature content", as defined by a widely utilized rating board, contains INTENSE VIOLENCE, INTENSE BLOOD/GORE, and INTENSE SEXUAL CONTENT. Allow me to repeat again: the RP/Story Content rules do not encourage or allow intense violence, intense blood/gore, or intense sexual content.

  • Intense:
    1. (of a condition, quality, feeling, etc.) Existing in a high degree; forceful or extreme: "this job demands intense concentration".
    2. (of an action) Highly concentrated: "intense competition". (Dictionary.com)
  • Sexual Content: Non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including partial nudity (ESRB Ratings)
  • Strong Sexual Content: Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity (ESRB Ratings)

Sexual content, strong sexual content, or intense anythings are NOT permitted or encouraged in this guild. Therefore, any stories or roleplays posted and not immediately deleted by staff would adhere to the above.

Interacting with Other Users on Gaia, item 12:
If In Doubt, Ask: If you are submitting content to Gaia Online and you are unsure whether that content violates our Terms of Service or other rules and guidelines, it is best to check with a Gaia Moderator before submission

The RP/Story Content Rules state the same as the above. If any member is unsure about an RP or a story, I have made myself available for inquiries.

Images, item 2:
Mature material: Any material that is sexually explicit or pornographic, or depicts excessive violence or gore is not permitted. Tasteful nudity in the art forums is allowed on a case-by-case basis, but on the whole, it is a good idea to cater to a range of audiences. Keep in mind that some members may be as young as 13.

Again, the above was pretty much stated in the RP/Story Content Rules. We have taken special care for any potential members who may be uncomfortable with even our tame, implied gore/violence/sexual themes by requiring that all RPs or stories with that sort of content have a warning in the OP before anything else or in the thread topic header.
