The cabin looked pretty normal from the outside, just like every day plain-Jane log cabins. They were square and had little square windows on either side of the door and windows on the sides. There was also no sign of a TV antenna or anything awesome like that. There was a small step up to the actual inside of the cabin. From the door you could see 6 beds total; actually four of the six beds incidentally were bunk beds. One on top of the other, then two singles off to the sides, though they could be made bunk beds too obviously.

There was a small den area that had six bean bag chairs and long coffee table, obviously for snacks or when the kids wanted to sit and talk, play games or do other such fun things. If nothing else but to keep the kids occupied when it was a rainy day and they couldn’t actually do anything outside.

Not far from any of the cabins were washrooms, not quite outhouses or port-a-johns; they were pretty nice for being in a log cabin type building and in fact it sort of reminds one of those fancy restrooms that theme parks, or stadiums, or even race tracks have, with toilets and sinks.

"Come on," Peter yelled at his phone, shaking again as he desperately waited for a signal to show up. He was the first one to the cabin and as he pushed open the door, he almost turned around to head straight for the highway. But he didn't... He really wanted to, but he didn't.

Instead, he stood in the doorway for a few moments, a horrified grimace on his face, before stepping inside. Were they seriously expected to sleep in a place like this? With nasty old mattresses and creaky floors and no bathroom? What if they had to get up in the middle of the night? They were just expected to... what? Pee in their beds?? As if he was going to do that!

Peter moved over to one of the single beds, dropping his bag down on it before some other kid could come in and claim it. Seriously?? This was going to suck... He glanced down at his phone, looking for a signal, before just opening the texting menu and typing out something to his mother, anyway.

To Mom
I have seen only one adult out of the hundreds of kids here. We're all going to get eaten by bears. Hope you are enjoying Venice.

He hit send, watching the little circle spin around for a few moments and then:

Message failed to send.

Yeah, they were all going to end up eaten by bears.

Having first had to wander with the girls to their cabin, since Sam was apparently Ainsley’s luggage, the boy walked into his own cabin surprising quickly. A duffle bag was slung over his shoulder. As he walked around the room, he ignored Peter and his phone, and focused solely on finding the right bed.

He touched each free bed, poking and prodding them to check how springy the mattress was. He jumped up onto the other single bed, and bounced a few times. Nope, not the bed for him. Sam then went to inspect the bunk beds. He had never had the opportunity to try out bunks before. As an only child, sharing a room with anyone was something he never really had to face. On family vacations he always had a separate but adjacent room. Sam wondered which was really better, top or bottom.

Sizing up the two available beds, Sam made a snap decision: top. Tossing his stuff up to the top bunk, Sam quickly climbed up there. His head was very nearly touching the roof, but he didn’t mind it so much. When he looked up, he saw that people had written there names and ‘interesting facts’ on the ceiling. Reading material, great!

Surveying the cabin below, Sam watched Peter and his frustration with his phone. Sam just beamed. “This is great! Right, Peter?”

Peter moved to sit onto the bed when the other boy came in, trying to get his phone to work and grumbling about how none of this was fair. It was only when Sam said his name that he looked up again and around at the cabin for the first time, really.

"That's an interesting way to describe it," he replied glumly, thinking the other boy was a bit too excited to be there. Or maybe he was just missing something...? Could there possibly be more to having fun at camp than being able to have internet access which would allow him to use his applications to understand more about the world around him? As well as a GPS in case he decided to go on an adventure and got lost but could still find his way back?

.... No way.

"You're Sam, right...?" he asked warily, thinking he'd overheard the name but wanting to double check. He wasn't in his class, at least.

All in all, Sam enjoyed everything that camping had to offer. Though he had never been to a regular summer camp before. All his previous experience camping had been in tents with his dad every summer, and just for a few days. The idea of having an entire cabin and weeks without parental supervision was amazing. Not to mention it was going to be a nice break from senshidom; nothing bad ever happens at summer camp except maybe poison ivy.

“ Yup! Sam, just don’t call me Sam I Am. And interesting? Try awesome! No parents, we can go for hikes and roast marshmallows. I’m going to eat only marshmallows and hot dogs all week I swear.”

"You don't get out much, do you?" Peter wondered, his voice exasperated as he stared at the other young boy in disbelief. "You're going to get a stomach ache if you eat just marshmellows and hotdogs, you know," he decided to point out. Amateurs. "You have to at least eat the chocolate and gram-crackers. And then get the bun with the hotdog."

He moved to slide off the bed, slipping his phone into his pocket as he slowly made his way around the cabin, checking out the other beds and the windows, before moving closer to check for spiders or other bugs. Maybe he'd find a snake. A snake would at least make things interesting.

"I'm Peter," he introduced, turning back to watch the other boy and marvel at his enthusiasm. Maybe he was just still in a bad mood that he had no internet. He usually liked camping. In fact, he loved camping. Being out in the wilderness and exploring new things and eating wild berries, catching and cooking fish, building fires, whittling... It would just be more fun with his phone working.

"Well yeah, I'll eat the buns and crackers and chocolate too. That was implied." Was Peter going to be a smart a** for the entire two weeks? With Sam's luck, probably. Maybe, just maybe, Peter might turn out to be a pleasant kid once they got out and started to play some games. Camping, in all his forms was awesome, didn't Peter know that?

Sam laid flat on his stomach and peered down at Peter from his high perch, studying his face. "You go to Knightside don't you?" The boy looked a little familiar, but certainly wasn't in his own grade, or any above him (he looked too small for that).

Peter turned away as though he were still inspecting the window sill so he could roll his eyes at the other boy's comment. Hotdogs he could understand the bun being implied, but saying marshmallows instead of s'mores had a very wide opening to just mean, well, marshmallows.

He looked up when asked about his school, nodding hid head. "Yeah, fifth grade next year." And he was looking forward to it. New teachers, new things to learn. It was going to be great. And he'd be able to start Boy Scouts instead of just being a Cub. "You go there too?" he guessed, looking up at the boy named Sam as he leaned over the edge of the bunk. He supposed he looked familiar, but he couldn't remember for sure. Ah well.
