No-one was better than him in anything. No-one. After all, wasn't that how it was with his father, a wolf named friggen' Winner's Proof?
It was great to bask in those awesome genes. Too bad Winner thought it would be a great idea to trick poor Gullwing into having kids in order to beat out Winner's incoming litter - and he did, sadly enough, by one pup.
But Conquering Hero, or Conk as he was now being known as, thought about as much as that stupid happy lot as he did of dung. At best he took interest in Glory and Last Stand, who seemed to be bent on proving themselves better than him.
HAH.
But he dared not think of the even more annoying Celaeno, who crawled to their den begging for his father to take her as his own kid. Ugh. He shoved her forcibly out of his mind almost as violently as he wished he could in real life.
For now, the larger than normal pup found himself passing time practicing to be a defender of the border. Or, well, a little beyond The Realm's border. Like that was going to kill him; he could just run back and bark for help if he needed.
Which, duh, he wouldn't.
Bright green eyes fixated on a nearby butterfly as Conk crouched and began to stalk the hapless insect. "The hero's first kill," he narrated with a smirk. "Watch as his muscles tense, ready to pounce! See how awesome he is."

A puppy.
As the pup pretend to stalk a butterfly, Eris watched with a great deal of calculation and a well-concealed and deep seated disgust. She hated puppies.
The male's boastful narrative only increased Eris's desire to see this pup suffering. She could just picture this one growing up to be one of those males who thought they were the sky's gift to the ground and tried to be the hero of every situation. Conquer all obstacles for the praise. All in it for the glory.
Well. Eris contemplated the pup from her place sitting in the shade of a large pine with branches that dropped to the ground, partially concealing her from the pup. Even if he did see her, from the way she was positioned all he would see was a black pelt, piercing green eyes, and perhaps the orange bands on her front legs. If his eyes were very good, he might see the flickers of flame in her ears and be smart enough to be warned.
She doubted this pup would be warned.
A bit of fun at last. I was beginning to think I would be bored for the rest of my life.
"Yes, you certainly are 'awesome' for your age, aren't you?" Eris commented, her voice sounding loud since it was the only sound close to Conk other than his own voice.

The voice frightened the butterfly away, and with a surprised grunt the pup tried to leap at it and take it down. No dice; the insect flew away, a colorful dot floating from him with irregular wingbeats.
"Tch! What the hell!"
Conk whirled about, accusing eyes searching until he found the incongruous orange bands floating in a see of shadow and branches. "You!" he barked, fur bristling. "What was that for? That butterfly was mine."
Typically when someone agreed with how awesome he was, he wouldn't have batted an eye. But when that someone ruined his hunt to do so, the net gain was a pissed off puppy.
"Go get your own. Agh, now I have to find it all over again . . ."

Her temper simmered at the rudeness with which he responded to her, but her face remained calm. She would not apologize, but she didn't intend to let such an enticing game as this slip her by. It might be a much longer time between pups next time. ... Especially if this went as well as she planned. And it would. Unless adults intervened, she usually got her way when it came to puppies.
"That's too bad," she replied, her tone hinting at derisiveness, but staying just to the polite side of the line. "Well, if you think that hunting butterflies is the best such a promising young warrior can do, then by all means," she replied, slowly lifting to her feet. "I wouldn't want to interrupt you."
She stretched out her back legs and began swishing her tail rhythmically behind her. She'd found that pups who were usually drawn to movement were enticed by her tail moving. Her next words were designed to sting and Eris made sure she locked eyes with him this time. "Good luck with your... butterflies."
In a small dismissal of the pup, she pretended to be leaving, looking past him and starting forward a few steps.

Conk, if it were possible, frowned even more at those goading words. What was that supposed to mean? He had fought off (read: helped fight off) a bear! A friggen bear! Who else did that who were his age, huh? And mind you, he got out rather intact given the severity of the wounds his father had garnered in the encounter.
Twitch. Twitch. The tail made itself more appealing than the female probably intended.
Well fine! If she thought butterflies was stupid, then obviously she was a better target offering herself up. That was what the eye contact the and tail-wagging was for, right?
So when the adult stepped past him and showed him her back, the pup tensed his legs and without warning shot at his pitch black target: the enticing, moving tail.
