According to the Greek mythological stores, Erebus is the son of Chaos, and father of Rather and Hemera. Erebus means darkness and shadow in Greek. Erebus season thought of as a part of the Underworld. Erebus married his sister Nyx, or the night, and had children with her. His children include Aether the god of the sky, Hemera the goddess of the day, Nemesis the goddess of revenge, Charon the ferryman, Momus the god of satire, Geras the god of old age, Oneiroi the god of dreams, Moirai the god of fate, Hesperides the god of sleep, and Thanatos the god of death.

Erebus was born to Chaos and Gaia, the goddess of earth. Chaos was said to be the sole entity from which all the gods were born. Chaos is the place of nothingness which separates the Gaia from the Uranus, or the sky.

Chaos and Gaia had several children, so Erebus had several siblings. Most of the siblings married each other to procreate. Erebus was also depicted as an Underworld god, and he ruled the place where the dead were passed on after their death. Charon was the ferryman who ferried the souls across the river the dead called the Styx. After crossing the river they entered the land of the dead. Erebus was also believed in by the Romans and even the Romans had a similar concept of a boatman who ferried their souls into the river Styx. Through out mythological history both the cultures worshipped similar gods and had similar cultural practices.
