xxxxxDanny looked around the library, as though there were assassins in the bookshelves just waiting to kill her. Truth be told, Danny had never even stepped foot in a library. She looked around to take in the sights for a moment, and was immediately bored with what she found. Tall shelves were positively lined with books of all shapes, sizes, colors, personalities... Two librarians were glaring at her already. The ceilings were built high to encompass all the books. There were so many books that some weren't even shelved, just sort of thrown in piles every which way. Danny grumbled and picked out a seat near the back, at a nice quaint little table. It's not that books weren't exciting- she liked stories like The Reaper in the Rye and Where the Red Blood Flows, but something about the library just ...
xxxxxYou had to be quiet the whole time. Once you sat down, you had to stay sitting down, like the WHOLE time. Danny couldn't stand it. Everyone was so serious all the time! There were no denizens jumping off the shelves. No screaming banshee. It was an absolute bore. Not to mention Danny's tail freaked out just about every librarian ever. Fire + books = get this girl out of my library.
xxxxxSighing, Danny sat down at a table with her etiquette book, and flipped it to a random page. Her mother had absolutely insisted that she take the class. It made zero sense to Danny though. Why did the fork have to go on the right side? Wasn't it going to be picked up anyways?
xxxxxConfused by the book already, Danny looked around for something or someone interesting. There weren't that many people in the library at this time- just the few librarians, a boil in blue ... a couple making googoo eyes in the back. There were two interesting witches over in the corner, but Danny would feel incredibly out of place talking to them. Sighing once more, she turned back to her book and grumbled to herself about spoons.

The library had rapidly become Sparrow's favorite place in all of Amityville. He supposed that made him quite a bit of a nerd, which he was already attempting to hide (Ghouls liked the bad boils, didn't they? He needed to be less nerdy...), but spending time in the library was still becoming a rapid pastime for him. He still had difficulty reading at times, but despite that, just the feel of the library: the scent of the books, the way the crisp paper felt beneath his fingers...it was all so relaxing, so comforting.
Which is why, early on a Webday afternoon, Sparrow was seated somewhere in the back of the library, several books open on the table in front of him, papers strewn across the table. He was scribbling a bunch of miscellaneous mathematical equations down for future reference and just for fun (nerd, Sparrow thought somewhat resignedly, nerd), and after about an hour of this he decided he needed a break. Stretching his arms up, he stood and gathered together a few of the books he had finished. Moving over to the bookshelves, he slipped a few back onto the shelves, and had just pulled out another, when a flash of orange caught his eye. A ghoul carrying a book on etiquette (Etiquette..? Sparrow thought curiously) swept past him and flopped down into an empty chair, looking both bored and slightly grumpy as she flipped through the pages without seeming to really read them.
Sparrow stepped over to her, wondering what she was doing. "Pardon the intrusion," he said to the ghoul, peering down at her. "But I was just wondering...why is it that you have a book on etiquette..?"

Danny's eyes were half closed, and her head was slumping on to the table. She was seriously about to to fall asleep in the middle of the library. Luckily though, a ringing, pleasant sounding voice awoke her, and she, being startled, slammed the book down on the table. Glancing around instinctively, she noticed the boy standing just over her shoulder.
Her narrow eyes got bigger and brighter as she realized there was no thread; she was still in the library. "Ahhh Jack. Sorry about that! You scared me man," she said in a jocular manner. He seemed incredibly formal. Maybe this wasn't the best way to talk to him?
Trying to be impressive, Danny said, "Oh ... this old thing?" she gave an odd sort of chortle, one like her mother would've given and then continuing, "Just some ahhhh ... light reading, yes." She glanced at him suspiciously and then said, "Ahhh ..." What was it she was supposed to say to make her sound fancy? Oh right. "Why ever do you ask sir?" Danny batted her eyelashes out of spite. She'd seen her mother do it a thousand times, so she was really just imitating like a monkey.
He wouldn't noticed how uncultured she was, right? She had done everything perfectly! Just like mom, Danny thought proudly. Wouldn't Oersted like to see her now!

Sparrow slipped his hands behind his back, linking his fingers together as he regarded the ghoul curiously. She seemed to be a demon of sorts, if he was correct in his assessment; bright orange hair, a flickering black tail as well as a small pair of black wings that rather resembled one belonging to a demon. And demons by nature were proud, elegant creatures; at least, from the ones that Sparrow had encountered in his lifetime. This ghoul...was not exactly fitting into that mold.
Especially when she began speaking. He fought back a smile, his lips twitching in amusement. It was clear she was trying to sound more cultured than she actually was, and that batting of her eyelashes was entertaining, since it merely looked as if she had something stuck in her eye, rather than be flirtatious.
"I see," Sparrow said noncommittally, then reached over and took the book from her, turning it around. "It might help if you did your light reading the right side up."
His eyes twinkled mischievously, and he gave a small shrug. "It did not seem, pardon my assumptions, the type of reading for which young ladies such as yourself are interested in, which admittedly made me curious. Any particular reason why you are trying to learn etiquette?"

Oh jackin' jack. Had she really been holding the book upside down the entire time? Jack her life, her cover was blown.
Sighing, she said, "Fine you got me, I don't know the first thing about eti ... eti - kit." She pronounced each syllable like it was hard to say.
Well at least there was no more awkwardness about her now that she had told the truth. Danny relaxed in her chair and threw her feet back on the table where they had once been. Carefully balancing using a mixture of the chair legs and her own legs, she tilted the chair back until she was comfortable.
Ever the blunt one, she said, "Pardon my assumptions, but how come you talk all weird and complicated?" For any slightly educated person, Sparrow would have been completely comprehensible, but Danny was not one of those people. The way he stretched out sentences hurt her head. Why said, "the type of reading for which young ladies" instead of "what ghouls read." It was too much for Danny's little pea sized brain.
Either way, she pushed that thought away and just responded, "I'm learning the ... eti - kit," she struggled once again with the word. It just sounded funny on her tongue, "because I promised my mummy I would." She finished matter of factly. Some might cry "mummy lover" insultingly, but that's exactly what Danny was.

Clearly this ghoul was having difficulties. Especially since she couldn't even pronounce the word properly. Sparrow stifled an amused smile, adopting what he hoped was a calm and completely unbiased expression on his face.
He lifted a brow, tilting his head. "Do I talk weird?" he said mildly, supremely unconcerned at her lack of subtlety. It was not as if he were not used to people asking him this exact question many times, and for each time it was asked he seemed to have a different answer. This was mostly because he was quite aware of the way he spoke and it amused him that most found it strange. "Ah, well. Perhaps I was dropped on my head as a child and it forced me to speak in complete sentences."
Sparrow reached out, plucking the book neatly from the ghoul's fingers and flipping through it briefly, skimming the text. Although he did love books (for the most part), this one in particular did not seem very helpful whatsoever.
"What a curious reason," he said lightly, dropping the book back down on the table and slipping gloved hands back into the pockets of his pants. "But I'm afraid that book isn't going to be of much help. After all, reading can only get you so far. It's experience that's more important."
He offered her his hand. "I'm Sparrow. And you are...?"

Danny frowned at Sparrow's conjecture. Getting dropped on your head was sad, at any point in one's life. "I'm sorry you were dropped. I won't talk about your funny voice anymore- promise!" She put up her hands defenselessly to prove her point.
"Name's Danny," she said with a goofy smile. She slapped his outstretched hand in a high five, assuming it was one, and not an offer to shake hands.
She looked uncertainly at the book. Was it really that useless? The picture on the cover looked pretty promising though! Book covers always told the truth anyways. "S'not a good book?" she said with eager-to-learn eyes, "Well, I'll have to find a tutor or something on it." Seemed as that was Danny's endless cycle here at Amityville. Try to do something on her own, fail, and get a tutor.
Sighing, she stood up and put the book back in the shelf where she found it. She picked up her scrapsack and said, "Uhhh, thanks for the help I guess Sparrow." What else was she supposed to say?

He gave her a half amused, half exasperated glance before saying "A joke, my dear, merely a joke. You are free to talk about my funny voice at anytime you please. I daresay it doesn't receive enough comments about it as it is."
His tone clearly light, filled with a gentle teasing, Sparrow barely suppressed a laugh as the girl - Danny - gave his hand a hearty high five, rather than shake it like any other person would. She was, to say the least, definitely a little uncouth and rather brash in her actions, but there was an endearing sort of roughness to her; a childish impishness that made her quite enjoyable, at least from what he had seen so far.
Instead of letting her walk away, Sparrow fell into step with the fire demon, his gloved hands slipped into the pockets of his black slacks, boots making soft thumping noises on the ground as he moved to stand in front of her.
"If you were looking for a tutor, I could possibly assist you," he said, tilting his head to peer at the girl curiously. " I find I am quite adept in that area."

Danny was happy that she could make fun of his voice and it showed. She let out a big sigh of relief and smiled at him amiably. It seemed that even though he talked like some of the professors, he was just a student at Amityville.
As she was walking away, she was suspicious of Sparrow though. Why was he following her like that? His boots could totally be hard, and it was pretty obvious he was following her. But why? Danny looked behind her suspiciously, and then immediately flipped back, thinking she was incredibly stealthy (she wasn't). Yup, he was definitely following her.
Which is why his voice made her jump a bit in shock. She had been so busy detecting him, that she forgot he was actually there. Danny whipped around defensively, but immediately dropped it when she finally interpreted what he was saying.
"You," she said, pointing to him, and then back to herself as she spoke, "would tutor ... me?" Danny looked him up and down, as if examining him (she was examining alright, but for what, the world may never know).
Well apparently he passed the imaginary test. "W-would you?"

Sparrow thought that perhaps it was not a good idea to chase after a ghoul he did not really knew, and Danny's suspicious glance back at him over her shoulder only solidified these ideas. However, he had a reason for doing so, and so when she leaped in surprise at his sudden reappearance, all Sparrow did was smile genially at her.
"Yes," he answered her, and nodded. "See, I don't believe you're, er...quite as helpless as you believe yourself to be, and I'd like to assist in some way, if I can."
Thoughts of his siblings flashed through Sparrow's mind, and he gave a small, vaguely exasperated sigh. They would have been laughing at him now, should they see him, but he had always been one to be drawn towards the neat and tidy things.
Neither of which Danny fit into, but it was clear she wanted help.
"That is to say," said Sparrow. "I am quite knowledgeable in the area you ar are weak in, and if I could help someway or another, I would like to."

I would like to.
That was pretty much all Danny's brain registered. The rest of it was so complicated that her little mind just sort of filtered it out. If she could understand one thing though, it was that Sparrow wanted to help. That was a good thing, she knew that much. Helping people was good!
Danny reached out and grabbed Sparrow's two hands and bounced like a two-year-old receiving a bike for their FEARday. "Really? Like really really?" She threw her hands up in the air and shouted, "YAAAAY." This was a shining moment for her day.
A furious librarian stared at her and she put her hands over her cheeks. Oops. In a mucher quieter voice, nearly as whisper, she said, "Yaaaay."
With sparkling eyes, she looked back at Sparrow. "What do we do teacher?" She picked up her book and showed it to him, expecting him to put a magic spell on it and have everything all fixed, all better.

"Er," said Sparrow, slightly startled by the rather...enthusiastic reaction he was getting from Danny. He blinked down at her, nonplussed, then cast a glance back at the irritated librarian, a sheepish expression on his face.
"Well," he said, and cleared his throat, putting his hands on his hips. Though he had volunteered to help this ghoul, now he was wondering if he had made a mistake in being so hasty. Danny was...excitable, to say the least, and rather unusual in her actions.
But there was hope for everyone after all. Sparrow gave the suspicious looking librarian another look.
"Why don't we head outside and, er...yes," he said dryly, and set the book Danny had down, carefully maneuvering the two of them out of the library and down the hall until they reached the school grounds. Once there, he stood there surveying her with a scrutinizing expression.
"First off, stand up straight," he instructed. "No slouching."

Danny followed Sparrow down the hallway with a big smile on her face. What a nice boil this was! He was going to help her and everything, and they barely knew each other!
Eventually they made their way outside onto the Amityville school grounds. The way Sparrow was staring at her made her feel a little awkward, but she didn't really think much of it. After all, he was just looking. What could be bad about that?
First off, stand up straight. No Slouching.
Danny pouted a bit. She wasn't slouching! She did as she was told though- Danny was an obedient little bee. She stood up as straight as she could, (which, quite frankly, was hilarious to see because Sparrow was around her own height when she actually stood up straight, and he was taller than her when she slouched). "Like this?" she asked, eager to please her new teacher.

"Well," said Sparrow, eying Danny's new posture. She was taller than he expected, since most of the time she sloughed around uncaringly, and very nearly his own height. "Yes, that'll do, I suppose."
He walked around her in a slow circle, attempting to figure out just how to go about this properly.
"Can you walk with this on your head?" he asked, then promptly plopped a book down flat on the top of her orange hair.
"Walk five paces forward, then back."

Well Danny was stupidly obedient. Walk with a book on her head for five steps and then go back. How could that be difficult? Her eyes just screamed C'mon Sparrow, gimme a challenge.
So Danny crossed her arms and took a step forward. Like anyone would expect, the book instantly fell off her head, and plopped onto the ground with a dull thud.
Of course, Sparrow never said anything about keeping the book on her head. Danny continued walking like nothing was wrong, and eventually returned to the spot where she had started. She didn't even pause to pick up the book she had so carelessly job.
Proud of herself, she put her hands on her hips and sighed a breath of relief. Etiquette wasn't so hard! Easy peasy! "What's next, teach?" she said proudly. Sparrow would probably regret taking on this job very quickly.
