"Elizabeth." Mr White drawled, not even looking up from whatever he was reading as she entered his office. Betty bit her lip as she dropped herself onto one of his chairs; Mr White was the only one in DCNN who insisted on calling her by her full name instead of what she preferred to go by. It wasn't as if she hadn't tried either. Mr White was a harsh man who insisted on having things his way, and she waited patiently for him to finish his reading. It was an unspoken code, to speak only when spoken to. Her eyes drifted to the window and she wondered if those dots on the curtains were part of the decor, or otherwise.
"Right." He finally said, snapping her out of her thoughts of better curtains. "Ms Wilson said you wanted to talk about how Season Two of The Grey Area is going to go, eh?"
"Yes, sir." She sat up straighter in her seat, giving him her mega-watt smile, handing over the proposal. "I think it definitely should go beyond what Season One has done. All we did was to report the monster attacks, have a hotline for the public to call in and tell us what they had witnessed. We need to go further. We need to question things, get people discussing about the current state of events."
He groaned. "Elizabeth, Elizabeth. I told you before. The station doesn't think that it is such a wise move to make. The higher ups are pretty wary about incurring the wrath of those lunatics out there."
"Mr White." Betty said firmly, pursing her lips. "All we are now is really just a corner of the news dedicated to reporting the... strange occurrences in the city. The Grey Area is so aptly named because I do not believe in taking a stand in either side; I simply desire that people should start questioning things instead of pretending all this doesn't exist because it certainly does not."
"That was your job, after all." He grunted. "Elizabeth, you should really go back to that."
No! Betty thought. She didn't want to go back to her days of being a news reporter, simply chasing around reports of monster attacks and hoping to get one on camera. They all knew that it was real, that the lines between fantasy and reality were starting to blur. They had to speculate what exactly was the root of it all, what exactly was happening and what they could do to stop it! "No." She said, clenching her fists. "Mr White, listen to me. Please. We can't just simply say, 'This is DCNN at the scene of yet another monster incident' and interview witnesses. We're focusing on the small side of things, we're looking at this all individually. We need to see this on the whole, we need to give the people an outlet to collate their experiences, see if there's somehow, some sort of link..."
"You could very well endanger viewers, Elizabeth." He groaned, massaging his forehead.
"We could take anonymous calls." Betty retaliated. Once she was on the ball, she would not, and could not be stopped. "We could ask only for codenames, even set up a forum--"
"Could be hacked into and traced--" He pointed out.
"Or we could just stick to conference calls." Betty said firmly. "Trust me, Mr White. Destiny City needs this. We need to seize the day, because we can no longer shut a blind eye towards all this anymore. We need episodes with a discussion topic and get the ball rolling." She finished, and realized that she was practically out of breath. But it was worth it, to speak about something she felt so strongly and passionately about.
He eyed her and slowly gave her a grudging smile. "I admire your tenacity, Elizabeth. It's an interesting idea, I admit, and maybe if you give me a full proposal of what you intend to do with the program, I can consider it--" He stopped mid-sentence as she presented a file to him, and chuckled. "I should have known. Alright, Elizabeth, you can go now."
"Thank you, Mr White." Betty breathed in gratitude, shaking his hand before she left. This was going to be good. It was going to be fabulous.
