Basic Information

The weapon is essentially based off of the MG3, with a number of cosmetic changes and changes in material composition, and modified firing system. The weapon sports a polygonal 5 groove 1: 10 inch (254mm) right hand turn cobalt-alloy "flow formed" barrel; the barrel is made of an alloy that contains more than 50 percent cobalt. The barrel is roughly 13% heavier than standard steel barrels, but is more erosion and corrosion-resistant and is designed to retain high strength during long-term exposure to high temperatures. Cobalt alloys are frequently used in the aerospace industry, such as the hot-gas section of turbine engines. A proof of concept M240 7.62mm x 51mm NATO barrel, in practice, had 24,000 rounds test-fired through it, causing it to reach temperatures of 1,100 degrees, without failure. A steel barrel would have failed under such treatment.

The weapon uses mostly flow formed cobalt alloy for the rollers and the firing mechanism, although steel parts are present similar to both the G3 and MG42. In addition, the weapon uses advanced caseless .30-06 rounds, which are more powerful than the rounds from either the MG42 or MG3, and also lighter weight. The weapon is capable of firing multiple types of rounds, although to stabilize tracers the weapon requires a specially designed barrel with appropriate rifling, that reduces the accuracy somewhat to around 2-3 MOA.

Other than the firing system and rail attachments, the weapon remains nearly exactly identical to the MG3 and MG42 styled weapons.

Improved Vickers System

The Vickers system, as used in the original MG42, essentially used both recoil and gas operated actions, increasing both the reliability of the firing mechanism and increasing the rate of fire.

Designed to slide across rollers, the firing mechanism of the Mg42 was capable of vastly increasing the rate of fire by reducing the friction and mechanical wear, allowing the weapon to have one of the fastest firing rates out of any weapon during the war.

While the system proved to be effective in the MG3, a number of problem have arose. The action, is of course, a recoil operated weapon, meaning that the barrel moves back and forward during firing, like most modern pistols. While effective in terms of firepower and reliability, the accuracy is and recoil of the weapon are greatly decreased and increase, reflectivity, and possessing an easily detachable barrel further complicates the problem. Ideally, the barrel would remain stationary, both increasing the accuracy and decreasing the recoil, and potentially increasing reliability.

Heckler and Kosh invented a stationary recoil operating styled weapon, which is known as the "roller delayed" recoil operating fire system. The G3, Mp5, and HK33 are all known to use this system. Rather than recoil the barrel, the weapon works by recoiling the bolt head across rollers.

To improve the reliability and accuracy of the vickers system, the new system incorporates the same piston driven gas operated system, however, rather than recoiling the barrel, the system powers the bolt, which is slid across rollers and operates the mechanism.

This simplifies the mechanism, consequently making it somewhat more reliable, and also decreasing the movement of the barrel, inherently increasing accuracy to a degree.
