Kaiya picked her way slowly out from the nearby woodlands, the afternoon sunlight enveloping the world in warmth. After being surrounded by the shadows of the forest, the sunshine felt nice upon her back and wings, warming her body from its earlier chill. Step by step, the mare slowly made her way to a small pond, taking a moment to glance down and review her reflection.

Her gold and silver eyes looked warn, and she couldn't help but decide she looked old. Tired. Of course, on the one hoof, it made sense. Her days were spent caring for the lives of others, and doing her best to find soquili in need of some saving grace. She licked the heels of some of the most undesirable company on the planet, and did so willingly.

Hesitantly, the mare spread her two sets of wings, glancing at their molten appearance. The lower set had always been more fragile, wrapped in bandages and often taking the brunt of the damage. She did her best to keep her primary flight wings safe, but it wasn't always easy. They too were msising feathers and her right wing looked to have a bite taken from it.

Such was the story of her life. Scars, both old and new, painted her body of mish-mash color. The dark mixed with the light, and gold and the red, Kaiya couldn't help but be amused by the spirits choices. She was in a constant war with good and evil, strange that they had to paint it upon her too. Thankfully though, the mare wasn't particularly vain. Appearance meant little to her - be it her own or another's. It was so easy to judge by the outside, when it was the heart and spirit that mattered most.

Still, she had to be aware of her body to know how far she could push herself. After the past few nights, having done what she could with a young and obstinate kalona male, as well as bumping in to his families herd. Thus far she wasn't sure whether he would consider her words, but she had hope. It made sense he would have dismissed her and driven her away. Thankfully though, Kaiya had endless amounts of patience. She'd give herself some time to heal before heading back to seek him out again.

Gingerly, the mare tucked her wings back against her sides and lowered her head to drink. The land seemed quiet this afternoon, with nothing but a few chirping birds. She was content to live her life in the quiet, and solitude was something she was quite used to. All of her children were grown, and those she mentored were living their own lives. No, Kaiya's heart had always been to her work and those that needed her, whether they realized such a need or not.

It was rare for Regelus to feel tired, even rarer for him to feel old or worn. He had been around for longer than many others even of his race; one of the few original Angenis, he had been watching the world and the people and Soquili in it since...well, he honestly didn't know. As the Keeper of Destiny, it had been his duty to watch for dissension and lack of faith and nudge those that lapsed from the path back into the way of acceptance. That duty had eventually brought him to the Kawani lands, where understanding and acceptance of fate were at distressingly low levels; since his arrival, he had been moving among the lands, sharing the wonder of things yet to come and the ultimate reward that would accompany that coming, if only people would let it in.

It had been an important duty, and he had taken it very seriously. Regelus himself had always been honor-bound, and he lived up to his domain: calm of temper, steady of nerve, he took the bad with the good and a grain of salt, serene in the knowledge that everything that happened was meant to happen and would be for the best.

However, a new and unforeseen duty had become his several months ago, and it was proving to try his nerves and legendary calmness like nothing ever had before. That duty was responsibility for another Angeni; unlike Regelus, his mentee, Ausdauer, was one of the younger generation. Ausdauer's domain was perseverance, and it had manifested in the form of a hard-headedness and dedication to doing what he himself felt like, regardless of the wishes or wants of others. This brashness had managed to anger Ausdauer's guardian spirit, cating him out of favor and into penance in the form of a small pony for one year of his life. That being complete, he had been given over to Regelus' guardianship, that he might learn from Regelus the proper attention to duty and honor.

Needless to say, it had been a trial for both. Ausdauer was good-hearted, but his stubbornness was something that Regelus was unused to. Regelus himself had yet to crack under the pressure, but he was far more ready than he would like to admit to allow Ausdauer to have some time to himself. Today had seen the two part ways for some mutual de-stressing, and Regelus was taking advantage of that break to indulge in some quiet meditation.

It was a lovely afternoon, and he had found a pleasant spot atop a small rise on which to settle himself. It was just above a small pond and afforded the calm aspect of the forest; he had stationed himself facing the woods, spread wide all of his wings, closed his eyes, and allowed the warm light to bathe and cleanse body his body and spirit. In the sunlight, his many ornaments and jewels gleaned even brighter than usual, brilliant and glowing against his deep coat.

Kaiya wasn't entirely sure how she missed the sight of another upon the ridge over the pond. Perhaps she was more exhausted than she thought, for having finished her drink, the sight of something gleaming caught her eye. It wasn't the sun, as that was far over head, but it was the reflection of light, like crystals that danced upon the water. Except this wasn't water at all, it was on what appeared to be . . . .another angeni!?

Squinting at the strange, darker coated being a top the hill, she couldn't see all of the creature but she did witness two pairs of wings. Unfortunately, she also saw the reflection of light against armor, and her curiosity was piqued. Strange that she missed the other upon her arrival, but then again, she had been focused on the water below and not what was upon the ridge.

With her thirst slacked, Kaiya couldn't help but want to draw closer to the stranger. How long had it been since she had met another of her kind? Given, she was far off and couldn't tell if he was a pure angeni or perhaps a cross and mix, but either way, a spot of company might do her well. At the very least, she was incredibly doubtful that the other might pose to be at threat. And if he did . . .well. . . she could take care of herself, even if she was a bit beaten up this day.

Stepping quietly up the ridge, the mare hesitated as she drew near. She got a better look at the angeni, and he certainly looked pure. In fact, he felt pure as well. He was a dark maroon, covered in the most unusual sort of silver armor, but unfortunately he seemed to be meditating or focusing. . .Kaiya couldn't discern which. Still, the spirits had brought them together for the time being, and she did feel she owed it to them to instigate some sort of introduction. Hmm. Perhaps he was in prayer?

Giving a small nicker, the mare figured she would see how he reacted as she passed. If he was so deep in thought or rest, he might ignore her and she wouldn't disturb him further. She didn't want to startle him, and would apologize for the interrupt if he did wake or arise, but it had been such a long time since she met another of her kind. She couldn't help but want to take a moment to introduce herself, and if he was like-kin,

For his own lot, Regelus had no other excuse than his own inward concentration for why he didn't notice the arrival of another. Then again, time and long experience had taught him the value and importance of the inward-facing eye, and the equal importance of sanity and taking the time to clear his mind. He found the greatest contentment in his meditating, especially where he could also enjoy the effects of the sunlight on his dark coat, and could adopt a nearly zen-like state, if he so desired.

However, he also knew the value of not being completely oblivious to the surrounding world, even when deep in thought. The world, for all of its good points, could also be a dangerous place; while his size and the fact that he was an angeni would be a deterrent for some, there were others who would take it as a challenge and wouldn't hesitate to take advantage of an angeni with his proverbial guard down. Consequently, in spite of his inward focus he was aware of Kaiya's presence before she had even had a chance to nicker. But it was that very obvious gesture of greeting that caused him to lower his wings, open his eyes, and regard the other creature.

That she was an angeni required no explanation. That she was a pure was equally obvious, as she had none of the frantic energy, mixed traits, or small size typically associated with those of mixed blood. Her appearance was a trifle unusual, but he was sure that her's was relevant to her task in life and besides, it was never sporting to judge based on appearance. Regardless, it would be pleasant to converse with another, especially if she was as placid as she appeared.

Folding back his wings, he gave the mare a light, cordial bow. "Good day to you. I do hope that I neither obstructed or distracted you from anything important."

Kaiya watched as the stallion lowered his wings and turned to regard her. Just as he thought her unusual in appearance, which wasn't entirely inaccurate due to her mish-mash of colors, bandages, and scars, she found his own trinkets . . . odd and a bit distracting. Now that she was closer to him, she found him absolutely covered in both armor and . . .strange shining jewels. They were silver and a bright shade of blue that almost looked to glow when the sun hit it; and they even hung from his wings! Truly it was . . . unusual . . .but then again, Kaiya was used to seeing things that were different or strange. There was likely a good reason he was strewn with such trinkets, and even if there wasn't, to each their own. One should never judge, after all, for one could never truly walk in the hooves of another or know what colored their life and drove them to do such things.

Dipping her own head low to the ground in greeting, Kaiya gave a gentle smile. "Greetings and salutations, my fine sir. It is I who should be apologizing, having found myself drawn over by the light dancing from your armor and disturbing your peace. I hadn't been able to tell you were in rest before my approach, and had no intention of being a disturbance." Leave it to Kaiya. . . she was good at showing up when her presence might be unwanted. Not only did she do it with those she tried to redeem, but apparently she had a knack of interrupting those around her.

Perhaps it was but a gift. . . .but it didn't mean she couldn't feel remorse at having pushed herself upon another. Especially one who was so deep in thought! Unlike those she saved, she had no need to redeem this stranger before him. He was pure, and her own abilities told her quite well that he had no war with the dark, no uncertainty about his path.

Smiling gently, she gave a tilt of her head and a small, self-deprecating chuckle. "I suppose my surprise at finding another pure angeni nearby knocked away my common sense and courtesy."

If asked, Regelus wouldn't be able to state the origins of his body ornaments. For as long as he could remember, he'd sported the silvery decorations at his back, headwings, neck, shoulders, wings, and legs; had the blue jewels dangling from his wings, and born the symbolic Key of Fate around his neck. He slept with them on, bathed them along with himself; they were as much a part of his being as his mane or feathers. But he was also aware that it was less then common for Soquili to be decked out in such a manner, and he acknowledged the accompanying surprise with dignity and good grace. Few people ever understood the honor, that the ornamentation tied in with the markings on his own coat and body and that the jewels were the exact same shade of piercing blue as his eyes. Even fewer understood the key, but that was just as well; the last thing he needed was for more cocky youngsters to feel the need to try and pilfer it!

However, in spite of the common nature of his being stared at, he appreciated the decorum exercised on the part of the mare in not staring; yet another sign of her good manners and obvious purity. Many of the Angeni race sported significant physical reminders of their duties; either in their coloration or their ornamentation, so it was likely no surprise for her to see another so bedecked. Or perhaps her domain was good graces!

At her apology, he smiled in his kind but detached way. "There is no reason to apologize, my friend. I may have been trying to draw some peace from the spirits, but there is no reason to assume that I can't also draw some peace from pleasant conversation and fellowship, assuming that you are willing to oblige me." Flexing his wings to allow the dangling jewels to straighten themselves out, he then folded them against his back, the many feathers concealing most of his back ornaments. "I too have been a long time without the pleasant diversion of meeting another of the older of our kind."

It was playing with fire, to refer to the mare as older, but he expected that she would know what he meant. Obviously she was pure, but he would also bet heavily on her being an original Angeni, not born in these lands. And she also lacked the fretfulness of the younger first generations, such as his trying protegee. It had been more than a year since Ausdauer had come to him, but the younger Angeni still seemed as childlike as ever. Perhaps one of these days...

But that was not a thought for the moment. The occupation of the hour was to enjoy this glorious diversion, bestowed by benevolent Fate herself! "But who do I have the pleasure of addressing? I am called Regelus, bound to serve the will of Fate." His speech was formal, but so too was and always had been his manner. No one could ever accuse him of slacking when it came to protocol!

If Regelus thought that his words might somehow offend Kaiya, he was mistaken. Not only was he accurate in his assumption of the mare being older and more mature than some of the younger angeni running around, but even if he had been wrong, she wouldn't have grown upset. She was a difficult creature to ruffle, and it was very rare to find the even-tempered mare in an upset or frustrated. Oh, she certainly had her moments, but they were rare and not set off by typical encounters or mundane conversation.

Life was far too short to tangle ones feathers in a knot over vanity of all things, and vain was something Kaiya was not! Be it her age or her appearance, the mare thought very little. It wasn't that she looked down upon her mish-mash looks, not at all, she just didn't find them remotely important. She had grown up in love with her work, and knew that the only things important were her ability to defend those in need, defend herself against those unwilling to hear her plea and preaching, and keep on despite setbacks and adversity to her work. Giving every heart a chance to save themselves, to open their eyes to a holier and greater path was her true joy. What she looked like or what others thought of her wasn't high on her list of concerns.

Physical beauty and description only ran skin deep. In this way, she looked far deeper in to others she met and hardly thought much of their exterior form. Oh, she was aware enough to have been drawn over by the reflecting sunlight on Regelus' form; she was always well aware of potential danger in another, especially if they were traditionally darkhearted creatures such as kalona or skinwalker. But as for coloration and focusing on looks - ugly, pretty, beautiful, misshapen - it didn't last or linger. What was truly important was finding out the spirit of the other, of seeing what beauty and greatness lie within their soul.

In her line of work, one could never judge based on stereotype. There was great variation in every heart and mind that walked the Kawani, and Kaiya knew far too well that even the most joyful and kind soquili could secretly suffer or manipulate. Darkness touched everyone to some extent, it seemed, but it was her duty to lead the darkest of them down the road of the pure.

"Well then, my good sir, I will take this meeting as an auspicious moment and enjoy the gift of communion the spirits so willingly offer." Her words were gentle and kind, her silver and gold eyes glowing bright with warmth. She truly enjoyed the prospect of getting to spend time with another angeni, especially one of the older souls. She so rarely crossed the path of another kindred spirit, and was pleased to make the acquaintance of one now.

Dipping her head low in a deep bow of respect, Kaiya greeted the crimson coated male. "It is good to meet you, Regelus, may many blessings touch your day." Looking back at the stallion, she settled herself comfortably on the soft grasses of the hill, her presence calm and relaxed. "I am known as Kaiya, angeni of Redemption." There was no reason to weave her calling in to something more fancy or intriguing. She was what she was, and while she served only the spirits and fates calling, her duty was her greatest joy.

Regelus approved, both of the meeting and the mare. While he would unswervingly follow through with his duties, even the oldest of Angenis could find themselves overwhelmed and feeling isolated. In a world full of chaos, faithlessness, and self-importance, it could sometimes make one feel like they were completely alone; an island in a sea of chattering voices. Regelus had never given in to any form of despair; he, at least, had the serenity available in the form of knowledge that everything that was happening, both to himself and to those around him, was for a higher purpose. But it pained him to see others give in to their despair or frustration, especially those that should be embracing a higher calling. Too many times had his own protege, Ausdauer, had the audacity to question his purpose and his spirit, both in seriousness and, worse, in jest. If Regelus himself was to be driven to despair, it would be by the despair of others.

Which was why the appearance of Kaiya would be good for him for a few reasons, and he offered a silent prayer of thanks to the all-knowing Fates who provided him with a companion who he could talk to, rather than talk at. Short as this meeting would inevitably be, for however long it lasted he would be able to converse with another of the Blood that truly understood.

Still, he wasn't the type to ever be even moderately exuberant; his pleasure showed in his mild smile and in his bright eyes as he bowed in response to Kaiya's introduction. "Well, it is already a pleasure for me, Kaiya. Tell me, what is it that brings you to this part of the Kawani lands? Are you seeking a specific soul, or is this more a journey for discovery? Or are you perhaps making a home here, for the time being? I myself am a transient who found that this place charmingly served my purposes as a place of peace and solitude."

Kaiya herself was pleased that the fates had allowed her hooves to cross the path of another. While she had witnessed many angeni during her travels, she had found that there were many were of mixed blood and worse, of mixed faith. It was rare to meet Kin who followed the calling of a greater power, who were granted a domain and served good. Many didn't understand why she did what she did, why she chose to serve the darkest of hearts or offer redemption. . . .

Thankfully, Regelus before her was true kin. It would be refreshing to get the opportunity to speak with him, to know that he would quite possibly understand without question why she was the way she was. In fact, the last pure she had met was years prior, in the form of Raiju. Given, he was no longer pure and had lost his domain and his purpose, but . . . he had once known, had once understood. But that was many years ago, and she had not heard from hims since.

As the crimson stallion inquired about her purpose in the area, the mare couldn't help but smile. "I am but a traveler, passing through. I've spent years among the Kawani, though this particular region seems unfamiliar." She paused and stole a glance around at the quiet and peaceful abode. From its natural beauty to the peace it offered, she was surprised more in the area hadn't claimed it as home. "I go where the spirits guide my hooves, seeking out those who may need me most." Some may have scoffed at such a belief, but Kaiya knew without a doubt that there was always a reason for everything. She was on this earth for one single purpose, to inspire redemption in the heart of others. Everything else was . . . quite frankly. . . .secondary.

"Though I will admit, I am pleased to have stumbled upon such a quiet area. Even my spirit needs rest from time to time, a moment away to recuperate and refresh." It wasn't easy to be born of their kind. Powerful as they might be, it came with a great responsibility. Some weren't quite as focused as Kaiya was when it came to her work, but even she needed moments to herself. To meditate, to pray, to enjoy the life she'd been granted. . .

PostPosted: Sun Jan 22, 2012 1:02 pm

Regelus nodded approvingly as he listened to Kaiya, finding her words sensible and proper and her points valid. He too found a great to enjoy in the quiet, understated beauty of this part of the Kawani lands, and he too was surprised that there weren't more permanent residents. However, that was advantageous when he needed time to clear his mind, and was definitely beneficial when it came to reining in his occasionally wayward charge. It was an exchange; the opportunity to do good for his charge at the expense of mingling with the populace. He knew that both were noble and high purposes and did not regret either charge, but he often felt a p***k of conscience that he was neglecting one or the other.

"I too find it unusual how quiet this area is, but at this point it suits my purpose. Our kind doesn't, or shouldn't, if I may be so bold as to offer such a declaration, have a settled home. It isn't our lot to be localized, but to be amongst as much of the Soquili here as we can. I am glad that you feel the same way, for it seems like many of our kinds are actually settling themselves down. There are some whose domains emphasize the peace and security of home life, but I confess that I don't see how settling themselves will help spread their message." Without realizing it, he had begun to pace as he spoke, his words more vocalizations of his own thoughts than a true conversation that invited response. It was an easy practice for one used to the company of his own thoughts, but hardly mannerly when in company.

He realized that he was running away at the mouth after a pause at the end of his speech, and halted his pacing in the same instance. "I apologize, Kaiya; I'm not in the practice of actually speaking to other Angenis, not others who practice the old ways. I confess that I cannot count Ausdauer, good as his heart can be, as one who understands. Were he of my kind, I wouldn't be in the charge of him to begin with." He smiled apologetically at that point, giving Kaiya a short bow. "Please forgive me."

Kaiya listened to the other stallion as he spoke, agreeing with many of his views and beliefs. Even as he moved to pace, she could tell there was passion behind his words; he wasn't speaking ill of other angeni who did choose to settle in one herd out of malice, more out of frustration. Kaiya herself could understand and relate to such a frustration. While she encouraged every life to do what they would, to follow their own hopes and dreams, at the same time. . . angeni were different.

Very different.

Pure sorts, such as herself and Regelus, could certainly have hopes and dreams and desires. . . But they were lead by a higher calling. Their gifts, their domains, they were meant to be shared and the message spread. It wasn't that Kaiya didn't have her own personal goals, but her life revolved purely around her duty. It was her top priority, to redeem those who were damned, and settling down in one herd was not the way to do such a thing.

How many souls out there were lost and in need of her guidance? How many souls needed the comfort of any angeni, and found themselves without?

As the crimson coated stallion apologized, Kaiya gave a small shake of her head and a gentle smile. "There is no apology needed, friend, as I understand the frustration. It appears that our traditions for a pure angeni are perhaps a bit out of date. It is unfortunate to find so many of our kind settled and without purpose, drive or desire. . . but, to each their own. I only wish upon them every joy, and can only hope that the path they walk is one where the spirits believe them to do the most good. Surely, though we are a rare breed, you and I, there are others dotted throughout the land rallying to the cause." The dual-eyed mare gave a nod as she spoke, quite certain that they were not the only pair of angeni rallying for the good of others.

Kaiya herself possessed a great faith in the ability of the spirits. While she didn't understand how some angeni could roam the world without a care in the world, or could be overcome with vanity, selfishness, and personal gain, she also knew that no heart was set in stone. Things could change. . . and, spirits willing, some of the hearts of her kin might do the same.
