It's quiet. It's so nice for it to be quiet.

Marlon should have been sick of the quiet by now, but, really, he didn't think he often got a chance for the woods to actually be almost completely silent. He didn't care what had given him this chance, even if it turned out to be a rabid bear around the next curve of the steep hillside he was circumventing. His state of mind at the moment was dark; something he usually preferred to handle with as much quiet as was possible. It was a good thing he didn't meet too many wolves on his journey.

Sometimes he missed the companionship of a pack-- at heart, he was a pack wolf-- but it wasn't time for him. He wasn't ready to face a new pack yet and the huge amount of friendship building he was going to have to do. Just thinking about it made him feel more tired. More like just laying down and letting the elements do what they would to him.

He sniffed the air half-heartedly, but the scent of wolf made him pause. There was someone fairly close by. Marlon waited another half a moment, then he sighed softly and continued on. If he ran into them, he would make the obligatory small talk and go on his way. Or maybe they would just leave him alone.

All things considered, she was doing all right. There had been several times already when she felt like she was drowning in wolves, and even once the terrifying sensation of being surrounded like a hunted deer, but they had all passed. She had gone about her morning like a real pack animal, greeting all her nice new friends and managing a few delicate little dances of small-talk. And to reward herself...she had left. She had taken a deep breath and waited 'til she was convinced she was not fleeing from anything, and then archly escorted herself out of the territory, to spend a day in the solitude she had so sorely missed. It's not that they were unpleasant wolves, exactly...there just happened to be too many of them.

She was ruminating on this thought as she came across the male's scent, the first wolf-smell she had caught within several miles. Funny, she thought, how fast you forget to be scared, and how fast you remember. Looking pensive, she raised her head and followed his scent a few paces, making her breathing light and her steps soundless. With his bright coat, he was easy to spot; Thrush allowed herself as long a moment of observation as she dared. He didn't seem likely to threaten her, and anyway he must be equally aware of her own presence...so she bit back a sigh and stepped into clear view of him, working up a little smile, her pale eyes set warily on his face. "I wouldn't happen to be trespassing, would I?"

They didn't leave him alone, but as Marlon turned to the right and caught sight of the small female he felt a lightening of his depression (he would not call it a hope). She looked as if she were just as eager to avoid speaking too long. This could be a quick blip on his long, dismal life. One he was almost wanting to get back to.

"No. I haven't smelled any borders, have you?" It was a valid question, not really meant to be facetious, but he couldn't think of any other way to phrase it and he didn't feel like taking the energy either. He didn't want to offend her, though. He didn't like hurting others. For a moment, a spark of energy took him. He didn't like being hurt either. "Isn't it dangerous for you to be wandering around alone? Especially if you don't know where the packs are in the area?"

The chivalrous part of Marlon felt concern. He wasn't particularly strong when it came to fighting, but he was a male. Usually wolves had second thoughts about messing with males. Little delicate females, though, were likely easy targets out here on their won. They either had to be tough or foolish to be wandering around alone in strange surroundings.

She shook her head, a little gleam of amusement flashing in her eye; why, if she wasn't mistaken, this old fellow was just as keen on sneaking off as she. She couldn't help her mouth from quirking in a smile. See, her problem was that the only wolves she could abide were wolves who couldn't abide other wolves. No wonder she was having so much trouble!

She was going to go on a bit about what she knew of the surrounding packs, but she found herself rather arrested by his next words. He was just expressing concern on her behalf, but the words were sitting queerly with her. Her eyes narrowed, just a little, but was back to looking friendly when she met his eyes again. "Maybe so," she responded quietly, giving a little shrug, "but there are worse things a wolf can do." Her gaze shifted from polite to appraising, and she settled to her haunches. "Are you afraid?"

Bland wolves were so strange. She seemed to want to get away, but now she was posing him questions seemingly out of the blue. She didn't look like she was crazy, so he had to attribute it to her pelt, but then again sometimes it was hard to tell which wolves were crazy and which weren't. If he'd had to guess at Senka from a glance, he probably would have thought less of her than she had turned out to be, after all.

"Afraid of what?" He asked. Of course he was afraid, but that depended on what she was talking about. He was afraid of some things the way every wolf was. Where had that question come from?

He tried to put it in context, but he shifted uneasily, feeling a little less concerned with the past and a little more anxious about this new conversation he hadn't thought he'd be having. "You? The packs?" He tossed out a few guesses, to have a better chance of being right. This would be easier if he could read minds.

Thrush gave a shrug, quickly all too aware that she had made the wolf uncomfortable. That good impression she was getting eked away, a little, but she smiled and tilted her head. "Certainly not me," she returned with a quiet, playful sort of bashfulness, "I was just wondering what I might have to worry about out here." She looked down, and shrugged again. Never mind.
