Howl hadn't been able to sleep in days; and he looked it. The normally well dressed, well groomed wizard had a mop of blond bed mussed hair; but who could blame him, at five am? He was actually in a certain girl's bedroom--but the certain girl was sleeping, and it wasn't like he actually liked her or anything--besides that, he was the size of the average six year old, so they couldn't do anything fun--even if he had known what fun there was to be had in a girl's bedroom when the door was closed.

And though it was quite possibly dangerous to enter a pregnant mage's room without permission, Howl thought it was better than the alternative. His dreams were far more frightening than Kali's wrath, even if she did tend to attempt his murder each time he successfully upset her. She was worse than even Sophie!

"Kali? Are you awake?"

Kali, although pregnant, had no problems sleeping. She'd heard horror stories about women who couldn't fall asleep because of pain, or whatever; but thankfully, she'd managed to avoid such symptoms. It probably helped that she slept like the dead, regardless of her body's 'condition'. She really did love her sleep, and usually rose in a fit of rage if anyone dared wake her before the sun managed it.
This was why most people didn't. However, most people also didn't appear in her room in the middle of the night, magicked into being the size of a six year old.

She grumbled when he first spoke, pushing out at where she assumed someone's face was.
"F'goff...sleeping..." She growled, swiping for what she assumed was Dimitri's eyes. She missed, however, and frowned, pushing herself up to squint and glare at her cousin.
She was shocked to see Howl instead. A miniature Howl, but Howl all the same. She muffled a shriek of surprise and recoiled from him, eyes now wide, and very awake.

"Howl! What are you DOING here? I...In my ROOM!?! Why are you little? What's going on??"

Howl was silent for a moment, before moving to hug the his now awake friend. "Kali, you tried to takie my eyes out," he complained, before hugging her again. "I can't sleep," he added in explaination. "And I'm avoiding Lance's wrath. If he finds out I broke into your room, he'd take my head and mount it on the wall, or something. Well, he'd be scary, even if he didn't do that. So don't tell him, okay? You're the only one I can see who makes the nightmares stop. I couldn't sneak into Sophie's room at night, her father'd eat me for breakfast."

"So I figured if Lance caught me here this size, he won't be able to tell it's me. Besides, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't let him kill me or anything...right? And you did say if I had another nightmare, I could come, so..."

"Tell me a story?"

Kali rubbed her head for a moment, mulling everything over and trying to grasp what, exactly, was going on here.
"Uh. Well...I don't see why not..." She said, frowning a bit. "Are you okay...?"
She inched over and made room for him on the bed, patting it.

"Lance probably would kill you, yes. But I don't mind. I said you could come, and I meant it..." She smiled slightly. "Besides. Nothing bad's happening, so he can grow some trust." She yawned. "I mean, really. I'm already pregnant. What more could I do?"
She lay back down, rubbing her eyes.

"What kind of story, Howl...?" She didn't know many off the top of her head, though...

"A fairytale," Howl said promptly. "A happy ending, with nothing frightening, okay? They have to live happily ever after." The wizard, even as a teenager, was quite fond of fairytales; especially those that ended with a happily ever after. It might have been because he came from one himself; or it might have been that even without his heart, he was a romantic. He sat on Kali's bed, and scooted closer to her before laying down.

"It doesn't have to be a long story," he added. "I could just stare at you, you know." He yawned. "Can we sleep past noon, you think? Without anyone who'll probably kill me noticing? You wouldn't happen to have a spell for dreamless sleep, would you?"

"Hmm..I know a few with nothing frightening." Kali said, putting one arm around Howl and snuggling him close. She was glad that she could still do that; her belly had not yet grown to proportions before unknown to her body, and hugs were still give-able.
"We can definitely sleep past noon. I always do..." She paused, then sat up, reaching for the shelf above her head.
"I don't know a spell, but I do have a potion." She said softly. "They're all I can do since I got pregnant. Just a spoonful should do the trick, if you want it. It'll take a few minutes to kick in, though..." She smiled.
"I can tell you a story until it does, though."

"You do? None of those creepy ones where dead bodies come back to life or crows eat people, right?" He gave a shiver, grateful for Kali's warmth. His eyes widened, and he pulled away slightly. "Really?" he asked. "You've got a potion for it? Brewed and everything?" He wasn't quite used to taking potions--but he had used to use potions on his hair. "Do you think it works? Have you tried it? It won't make me sleep forever, will it? You're not going to poison me, are you?"

He paused, and hugged her. If he couldn't trust Kali, who could he trust? Even if she had tried to kill him four, no three times, seeing as one of them had been when she hadn't known it was him, she was a good person. "I'll take it. You'll tell me the story until it works, then?"

"No dead bodies or flesh eating crows." She promised, uncorking the bottle as she pulled it from the shelf.
"The potion's right here. It tastes sweet." She held it out to him. "I tried it myself, so I know it works. You'll wake up in the morning like normal, just without any dreams. And as if you'd think I'd poison you!" She nearly pinched him, but hugged him instead, pressing the bottle into his hands.
"Just have a drink. It won't take much. As soon as it's back on the shelf, I'll start the story."

Of course, she was still trying to think of one. She seemed to remember a story about a porridge pot. That one wasn't scary, was it? And, what did Howl count as a happily ever after?

Howl studied Kali doubtfully, before taking a sip of the potion. She was right; it was sweet, surprisingly. He had expected something bitter, like the awful juice Sophie seemed to like so much. He handed her back the bottle, hoping she would start the story quickly. He didn't know quite when it would take effect; a few minutes was rather vague--but as long as it gave him a dreamless sleep...

"Kali, start the story already," he weedled. "I want to hear it before I fall asleep." He wanted to hear the happily ever after, before he fell asleep.

Kali took the bottle and set it away, shifting in the bed so she could cradle Howl closer and still be comfortable herself. She didn't need much prompting to begin the story. She began slowly, still trying to remember all of the fairy tale.

"Once there was a good little girl who lived alone with her mother in a small house in a little village near a big forest. They were poor and had nothing left to eat. One day the little girl went into the forest to look for mushrooms for dinner, and met an old woman who gave her a little cooking pot. The old woman told the girl that it was a magic pot that would cook porridge whenever it heard the words 'cook, little pot'. When there was enough porridge in the pot, the words 'enough, little pot' would make the pot stop cooking porridge...." She began, keeping her voice low so her uncle and cousins wouldn't hear her even if they did happen to wake. She didn't want to be loud, or cause a ruckus, after all. That was kind of counter productive to putting Howl to sleep.

The story continued, telling how the mother tried to use the pot one day while the little girl was out, but she forgot how to make it stop. She paused for a moment after that, though, struggling to recall exactly how the end came about.

A few minutes? It was more like a few seconds. Howl yawned, and attempted to hide it; and failed in doing so. "Keep going," he insisted, silently willing for her to hurry with the telling so they could get to the best part of the story. He wouldn't hold out much longer. Kali's potion was clearly made for someone older--well, larger in size than this form. Another yawn, but he didn't bother to hide it.

"Well?" he demanded. "What happens next?" He couldn't remember this fairy tale; he didn't think he had heard it before. "And hurry up, Kali. I want to know how the story ends."
PostPosted: Fri Jun 10, 2011 9:28 am

Kali chuckled quietly as she saw the yawn, brushing a few stray strands of blonde hair out of Howl's face. Apparently the potion worked better than she'd thought it would; to tell the truth, the girl had forgotten completely about dosage and body size.

"Well, the mother said, 'No more now little pot.' but it kept making porridge. She said, 'That's it, little pot, stop.' But the porridge started to overflow from the pot and spill onto the stove. 'Stop it!' she cried, but the porridge overflowed onto the floor and filled the kitchen. It poured out into the street and into the next house. Then it poured through every street in the town and no one knew how to stop it. People came with buckets and pots to scoop up the porridge but as fast as they did, more porridge filled the streets..."

There wasn't much left to the story, and she hoped he would stay awake for it at least. But, she could see that he was very tired, and his eyes were beginning to droop shut; he was fighting it, but she knew he was just about ready to fall asleep. So, as she spoke, she lowered her voice to a quiet murmur, wondering if he would make it to the end.

"Not saying the right thing," Howl mumbled sleepily. "Magical objects are picky... It would've listened to Sophie. Everything does. He propped his head up onto his arm, hoping that would wake him up enough to hear the end of the story. Well, he supposed if he fell asleep before Kali was finished, she'd have to tell him the ending in the morning. He yawned, and tried to force his eyelids open.

"Finish it in the morning," he muttered, arm drooping to lay on his pillow, head following after. "You have to tell me the ending, though. If you don't, I'll curse you so you have bad luck for the rest of your life--" of course, Howl's curse for "bad luck" only consisted of broken mirrors and black cats. The teenage boy, turned six year old, was neither smug, nor particularly heartless when it came to being in Kali's arms.

But that might have been because he was sleeping.

Kali looked down as she felt Howl relax, smiling at his tiny form. He looked so...innocent, and adorable, like that.
Pity, she knew he was neither. Well, perhaps adorable, but not altogether innocent. Naive was a good word.
She expected to be woken with demands for the rest of the story in the morning, but decided that could wait until said morning came. And if Howl had any sense, he wouldn't decide that it was morning until well after noon, when it would be safe to wake the pregnant red head. Because if she was woken before she was rested, black cats and broken mirrors would, surely, be the least of Howl's worries.

Howl, fortunately, did not decide it was morning until late afternoon, so he was safe. In fact, it could have been considered early evening when he awoke. Smaller bodies required more sleep, and after not being able to for several days--well, he was taking full advantage of Kali's warm, soft bed. He slowly opened blue eyes, yawning. He sat up and stretched before glancing around the room for Kali. She owed him the rest of the story!

She'd promised! Alright, so he had decided that she had promised. He wouldn't rest until the story was finished--well, he had, but he wouldn't now.
