"To my lovely students, I would like for you to know after my father's passing I've decied to change a few things about the Academy, mainly the things I didn't like when I was attending this academy. As you can notice the school itself is absolutely perfect in its construction, the DWMA was built to perfection. Even the cracks obtain from battles are perfect in it's semetrical appearance as well as in it's detail. The changes I have made to the academy rules are hereby in place to make you all better. Please be sure to read all of these rules and live by them. Punishments will follow any who disobey these rules. Without further adiue I give you the rule book to the DWMA. "
- Yours truely, Lord Death the Kid

The Death Weapon Meister Academy, or DWMA for short is a the school that was created by Lord Death, but is now run by his son Death the Kid, as a training facility for Weapons and the human wielders of those weapons, these people are known as Meisters. Each Meister has at lease one Demon Weapon companion which has both a Weapon and human form. Lord Death created the school as an organization that protects peace in order to prevent the rebirth of the "Kishin", an evil demon god that in the past nearly destroyed everything by plunging the world into chaos.
The main goal of the academy is to protect the world from evil and preserve peace. In the world, there are humans that may abandon their life as a human and go on the path of an Evil human, a path that transforms them into vicious evil beings that kill innocent humans for their pure souls. When enough souls are consumed, the Evil human can transform into an incredibly dangerous being called a Kishin.
To stop this, the DWMA trains people to combat against these Evil humans, by training their students from a young age to fight and kill these beings. The DWMA also trains Meisters and Weapons to combat against Witches, which also threaten the peace of the world. Many students are motivated into fighting against the Evil humans and Witches with their main goal: making or becoming a Death Scythe. When a Demon Weapon has consumed a certain amount of souls in a particular order (99 Evil human souls and 1 Witch Soul) they gain extraordinary power and can be used by Shinigami himself. Creating a Death Scythe is thus known to be a hard and difficult process, and many Meisters are respected for creating a Death Scythe, and Death Scythes themselves are respected among the students as well.
As well as an organization to protect the peace in the world, the DWMA is also a philanthropic organization, donating a lot of its money in order to help with the upkeep of the world. In turn, the Academy runs on global tax.
The DWMA is a rather special school in that students can actually change their names upon entering it. These names are known as 'pseudonyms' For example, the Death Scythe Soul, changed his name from Soul Evans to Soul Eater. Once a student has changed their name, they are stuck with the same name for a minimum of two years.
Every year, the DWMA also hosts a grand party for all students and staff, commemorating the founding of the Academy, called the 'Foundation Day Eve' which means that it takes place the night before the actual day Shibusen was founded. Every student is required to participate in this event. This is an extremely formal event. A commit will explain the type of event it will be later on in your year at the DWMA.
All Students of the DWMA are required to read chapter 2.
All rules concerning both Meisters and Weapons for sparing on campus please refer to chapter 4.
Uniform Policy can be found in chapter 6 .
If you are a weapon please refer to Chapter 8 for all the rules concerning you.
If you are a meister please refer to Chapter 88 for all the rules concerning you.

The classes of the DWMA are split into two categories: the NOT Class, and the EAT Class. NOT stands for Normally Overcome Target. Roughly 90% of the students are in the NOT Class, meaning over half of you reading this manual will be placed in the NOT class upon entering the academy and they are the ones who are more 'normal' than the EAT Class, and do not have much power, making them more like the non-combatants of the DWMA students. The EAT Class however, the remaining 10%, are exceptionally talented people with great power. They are given the duty to actually fight against any evil-doers. EAT stands for Especially Advantaged Talent. It is not unlikely for a student to be transfered from the NOT class into the EAT class, but it is extremely rare for students of the EAT class to be transfered to the NOT class. Most of the students who became legendary in the DWMA started off in the NOT class so for those of you reading this and believe you are less perfect than those in the EAT class who have aquired their status through either hard work or natural talent don't be discouraged, your time at the DWMA will enhance your personal strengths and you will make it to the EAT class one way or another.
WARNING!!! When choosing a weapon partner or a meister it is highly reconmended that you select someone from the same class as you. There are many problems with partners and adding a power difference with either one's soul or skill is a greater problem students have when they select a partner from a completely different class. As partners you will already need to learn how to trust each other and resonate your souls. That's not to say you are unable to have a partner in a different class but that would change the classes for both the Meister and Weapon making classes either too hard or too easy. So choose your partner wisely.

In the DWMA students are encouraged to test out their strength, strategies, and abilities with one another. When a student wishes to face another student whether that student be a weapon or meister or a partner match there are rules that must be followed. These rules are binding to bother students and teachers. It is valid anywhere on campus, off campus fights are punishable by law.
+ First any student who wishes to challenge another student must make it offical either through a direct challenge or through a written message.
+ If students engage in combat the bout must be viewed and judged by at least one teacher to stand as the judge.
+ Battles will continue until one party members admits defeat or is announced unable to do battle anymore by the teacher watching over the event.
+ Killing or attempting to kill the opponent after the match has been called is strictly prohibited.
+ After each match the combatants should show sportsman like behavior by either shaking hands or thanking them for the battle.

Whilst not in lessons of student life, students live either in rented apartments, or school dormitories. Each students gets a weekly pocket money of $200 to spend. However, if for some reason, they spend all of it, they will not be able to get any more money until the next week. Because of the large amount of students that end up penniless, many shops in Death City cater for students wanting to work part-time to earn money.
All students belonging in the NOT class are forced to live in the DWMA Dorms their first year at the academy. Students of the EAT class have the option to live in the dorms or in an apartment their first year. Apartements must be paid through the pockets of their students and is not supported by the school. Meisters and their weapon partners should share the same living establishment. It builds a better bond between the Meister and Weapon. Food is also not given out by the school, students are responcible to pay for all their meals either at the DWMA or off in Death City.
The DWMA changed their uniform policy directly after Kid took over the Academy, the school still has various forms of the uniform and allows students to patch any top with any bottom. Casual clothes are also accepted on students off days. Teachers are asked to wear something casual at all times. One Star Meisters and Weapons are required to wear the uniform. Two Stars Meisters and up are allowed to wear casual clothes that were approved by Lord Death himself as perfectly semetrical.
For uniform selection please see page 28

Demon Weapons are paired up with Meisters, skilled humans with great combat skills. With the Weapon's ability to strengthen their Meister, and vice versa, a Weapon and Meister team can combine their respective powers to become near unstoppable in battle. They can also make each other stronger by working together, making the bond between Weapon and Meister a strong and close one. In order to work together properly, the Meister must understand the Weapon's will, and vice versa. The Demon Weapon is not a normal weapon, or an inanimate object. It is a person with objectives. When perfectly in sync with each other, they can become a lethal force. Just by matching their breathing, a Weapon and Meister can fight flawlessly.
When paired with a Meister, a Weapon becomes extremely deadly. By performing resonance between a Meister and a Weapon, the Weapon can unleash a variety of abilities and can even change its physical form. This level of power can be achieved through what is known as a Soul Resonance, where both Meister and Weapon synchronize their souls with each other. In this state, their thoughts are both synchronized so well, that Weapons can even react to their Meister's emotions.
There are three different levels of a weapon, with each designated with a star, one-star being the lowest and three-star being the highest. The difference between the ranks is evident from the focus in battle, types of skills used, and desire to harvest evil human souls, rarely straying from these types. This likely stems from the fact that most new weapons strive to work together with their Meister to gather souls and become a Death Scythe. Two-stars and above seem to be sent on specific missions that can have nothing to do with harvesting souls, often possessing a skill that would prove advantageous to the DWMA. In some cases weapons on this level are sent off with other Meisters of higher levels than their own and will work together with them forming a new bond for the mission given to them. Needless to say, three-star are also known as Death Scythes. They are the best weapons meant for Lord Death to use and also have gained the ability to fight or use their abilities without the help of a Meister.
As a Weapon you live by the following rules:
1. Let no harm come to your Meister, Weapons you need to remember that your Meister is just a Human, their bodies are weaker than yours and there is only so much energy, damage, and stress they can take before their spirits are broken and they fall. Once you've bonded with your Meister you will understand this rule more clearly.
2. At all cost you are to become a Death Scythe. Your ultimate goal for entering the Academy is to become one of Lord Death's weapons to be used for facing against the Kishin or any other threats come to him.
3. To uphold the laws in place by Lord Death and protect Death City from any and all attacks.

There are three different levels of a meister, with each designated with a star, one-star being the lowest and three-star being the highest. The difference between the ranks is evident from the focus in battle, types of skills used, and desire to harvest evil human souls, rarely straying from these types. This likely stems from the fact that most new meisters strive to gather souls and create a Death Scythe. Two-stars and above seem to be sent on specific missions that can have nothing to do with harvesting souls, often possessing a skill that would prove advantageous to them. Needless to say, three-star meisters are the best meisters for fighting without weapons and being common wielders for death scythes.
As a Meister you live by the following goals, or better yet to call them laws:
1. The goal of every Meister is to turn their weapon partner into a Death Scythe for Lord Death by collecting the evil souls of humans.
2. To prevent the hatching of evil souls from becoming Kishin, and halt the reserection of 'The Kishin'
3. To uphold the laws in place by Lord Death and protect Death City from any and all attacks.

Punishments
Failure to read this manual by enrollment of the DWMA will result in the shaving of one's head. This rule is for both male and female students. It is manditory that you read and understand the DWMA Rules and Regulations. Failure to complete an assignement properly will result in some form of Extracurricular or supplementary lessons. Which can involve fighting and thus, is quite dangerous, so the various missions on offer are ranked and have specific requirements. Students must have their chosen mission approved by the receptionist before being able to go on it. The Evil human souls that they collect are tallied and some students who, purposely do not collect any Evil human souls on their missions, are often punished by having to do school chores, or often signed up for extra lessons. Also, if a Meister and Weapon pair accidentally acquire a soul that is neither Evil human or Witch, or they end up causing a lot of damage in their mission, all of the souls they have collected are confiscated by Lord Death. Failure to have a teacher present when having a spar on campus will result in both parties having to perform some form of extracurricular lesson. Meisters under two-stars are not allowed to be in the Dungeon areas of the Academy without being accompanied by a teacher. Being caught will result in a trial and a harsher punishment. Conspiring with a witch to over throw Lord Death or destroy Death City will lead to an automatic expultion from the academy or execution from Lord Death.
