I'm in the process of setting up an rp guild but somehow started having second thoughts.
Background story: Basically (shortened to the max), this is an AU role-play set in a Medieval and Fantastic world. It is based on the idea that life evolved under and on the surface of the world independently at first. The ones on the surfaces are typical everyday human while the creatures underground are fantastic and mythological beings (elves, vampire, trolls, demons, you name it) and they did not know about the existence of each other until some of the underground inhabitants migrated to the surface since the environment was less harsh. Since the immigrants had magic or special ability, the quickly enslaved humans and were the dominating civilization for a long time until BAM! Some kind of earthquake reconnects both worlds together and natural resources drop leading to competition between the survivors. The people from the underground world decides that they should move to the surface as well since there’s a lot more food and space for them and the previous wave of immigrant starts freaking out because centuries of peace and stability had weakened them although they still have the upper hand in numbers. Meanwhile, humans have been gathering together in a secret community over generations to plot a way to overthrow their tyrants and have somehow developed special abilities of their own. Seeing how the previously all high and mighty rulers freak out, they decided it’s time to strike.
Honestly, I haven't thought of a plot yet >< and I'm avoiding the stereotypical "I am an evil warlord and shall destroy/conquer the world!!! -evil laugh-" This was supposed to let the role-players set their own clan/community to wage war against each other but that would lead to a complicated battle/warfare system unless we follow the typical shounen way of "Let's have our best warriors fight" and "1 man army"
I have been suggested to either set a cap to the amount of troops an army can have and how many soldiers will die or have the moderators role-play as the different army generals. The problem with the former is that I have absolutely no idea what numbers to use and for the latter, I consider myself very inexperienced in role-plays and I worry that it will be too troublesome for the crew.
I'm kinda considering forgetting the guild idea and setting it as a thread Dx

Don't spend 20K if you're not certain. If you want to fiddle with it first, start as a thread. Build up. It's better to add onto your one-story ranch than move into a mansion you can't upkeep.

I like the idea and I'm in. I have a guild You can have for it if you want but you should start it as a thread and get a following. BTW, I love the idea a lot and will definitely join.

Just a general tip, Never Ever Ever Ever Buy A New Guild. More often than not used guilds from a reseller are already cleared out, and have a base price of 14K, with approximately 1k per subforum. The last guild I bought had five subforums for 16.5k, posts and members cleared out. That's a value of 32.5k, not counting labor.
The only drawback is that the post count won't be accurate, unless they've fixed that by now.
I also strongly agree with Blackbird. You may want to change aspects about the story, or you may have a very small number of players at first. A small number of players is easily lost inside even just one subforum so it really is best to start out as a thread, work up the story, player count, perfect your system, then expand to a guild when it's appropriate. It's also much easier to attract people into a new thread based RP than a new guild based RP, for the same reason that people will get lost, A guild with a few new threads and a small number of members looks unsuccessful, even dead.
Reguarding your game in particular:
I don't know what AU means, so I'm going to ignore those two letters and hope they're not too important. Sounds like an interesting way to butt the two concepts of normal life and fantasy together, and I can't say I've seen it a million times. Probably at least once, but not often. As I see it, the initial meeting of Man and subterran would also make a great game, and may be a better starting point, or practice game to test out your ideas, then the guild runs the story of later on when the earthquake happens. If you do it this way then you get to test out the general idea of your magic/special abilities in a more simplified form, as there will be only the one race, and the humans. In science you always want to minimize variables so you can accurately determine what caused the effect.
Ether way, sounds fun. I wish I could advise you on the plot, but that's always my problem too.

This looks interesting, original and I don't see why it wouldn't be doable, but I agree with Blackbird and lily, start it as a thread, see how it works out, make any tweaks that are needed. Better working out the bugs now in a thread than having to figure something out later, when you've got the guild set up, when it could just turn out to be a waste of gold and time.
