Gigi hadn’t heard the due date for the new assignment. Kind of hard to, over the chorus of moans and protests – wasn’t it summer yet? But she was already too focused on what needed to be done to worry about when it had to be done by, and after all, it never hurt to start early. Before the final bell had sounded, she had half a page of planning notes, starting with Stage One – research.

Thus she headed directly for the library, do not pass go, do not stop for coffee. (Coffee was sadly second on today's to-do list - she could take library books to the coffee shop to read, but bringing coffee to the library tended not to work so well.)

She moved up and down the History aisle, schoolbag dragging from one hand, the other running lightly over the spines of the books as she searched for the perfect reference. If she could get all her information from one source, that would be the most efficient, she thought, but the teachers didn’t always like that. Maybe two. Oblivious to everything but her search, she pulled down a book, flipped through the pages, and set it back in its place, making a tsking sound with her tongue. The ones with too many pictures never had enough real information. She reached for another promising-looking volume.

The summer had initially looked to be so promising and Arian had been looking forward to not doing a lot of anything. Well okay maybe hitting up the couple of bead shops whose websites he’d stumbled upon online when looking up Destiny City during last Winter’s Half Term break and there was the Summer Camp break thingy that his cousin Saffy had told him that she’d booked him on... What he’d not been expecting to do was to end up what was increasing looking likely to be most of the Summer break studying.

Apparently moving to a whole new country wasn’t a good enough excuse to skip out of doing GCSE exams. Arian still wasn’t sure how it had all happened, but somehow the school had convinced the family that completing his General Certificate of Secondary Education (better known to most as simply GCSEs) would stand him good stead in any future educational prospects – especially should he decide in future to head on to university – and Meadowview, his new school had been (to Arian’s opinion anyway) surprisingly obliging in letting him sit said exams. That had been enough to convince Saffy and somehow he had ended up having to note candidate and centre reference numbers, in between filling out paperwork for his family visa and making sure his passport was up-to-date.

Personally however, Arian still wasn’t totally convinced as to all the benefits of sitting the exams, considering the fact that sitting the GCSE exams was not going to be the end of studying. Despite the fact that sitting GCSEs would have meant a place in a 6th Form College to do A-levels and then maybe University in the UK, it turned out schooling in Destiny City, USA was not going to work that way. After getting back the results of the tests that Meadowview had sent him to complete, it had turned out that despite being ahead in English Language and Literature and about the same in Geography, he was somewhat behind in Science and woefully behind in History. Which had somehow led to ending up being signed up to extra classes over the summer – all in the name of being all caught up when school started back up in the Autumn term... No semester – they called it semester here.

Maybe it was just as well Arian actually liked libraries.

Gigi’s research technique was usually methodical, but there were so many history books. By the third shelf, she was getting a little lost in the sameness of the titles ‘Complete’ histories, ‘Concise’ histories, this and that ‘Through the Ages’ – and the titles that were more interesting were also vague, she had to take each of them down to work out if they were even for the right time period.

It sucked that her mother was no help at all with American history, she thought. Her dad kind of was, if you got him in the right frame of mind, but her mum didn’t even try. Asking just led to the ‘in Australia’ rant. Her teacher wasn’t going to give her any bonus points for knowing Australian history if she couldn’t answer her homework topics.

She put another ‘concise’ back on the shelf and reached for the ‘complete’ that had been sitting next to it a minute ago. Except it wasn’t there. She searched the shelf above and the shelf below, a frown creasing her forehead, and did a sweep of the books she’d just looked through, in case she’d got them out of order. When that didn’t turn up the stray volume, she backed up a step to look at the higher shelves, bumping into someone as she did.

“Sorry! I was just-” she waved vaguely at the books around them. “Sorry!”

It had taken a good 40 minutes or so for Arian to become focused enough to study. It had been his first time stepping through the doors of the Destiny City library, it had probably not helped that the first section of books that the raven-haired boy had stumbled across while trying to find the American history section had been the home-baking section and Arian had let himself let himself be distracted over recipes for chocolate chip coffee cake and something called a ‘blackout’ cake. It was about that point that Arian somewhat sheepishly realised that he’d yet to read a single history book and the cookbook was carefully, if regretfully slotted back on the shelf he’d gotten it from.

Eventually the American history section had been located and Arian had become aware of problem number 2 – which book? There seemed so many to choose from and he honestly didn’t know where would be the best place to start. The ‘Through the Ages’ books looked to be slightly more interesting than the other choices, however going for the ‘Complete History book’ looked to be perhaps the better choice – after complete meant that that would have everything in right? Right? Or if not then at least it would be detailed. With his mind made up, Arian snagged a Through the ages, then moved to the side to where he’d seen the Complete History in question. There was a girl nearby, but she seemed engrossed in looking through the books and Arian didn’t want to disturb her.

The book was on one of the higher shelves – just out of reach and Arian wished (not for the first time) – that he’d been born be just a few inches taller. Finally however, after some awkward stretching on tiptoes, his questing fingers were able to snag the edge of the book and eventually add it to the Complete History book. He was just about to step back and find a desk or something to read at when someone bumped into his side with enough force to cause him to almost drop the books. Almost automatically, he turned to look, eyes registering the girl he’d stepped round earlier. “It’s fine” he told her in response to her apology as he held the two books carefully. “How about you? Are you all right Miss? ”

The ‘miss’ kind of threw her. Gigi wasn’t used to being Miss anything, and for a moment she wondered if she was mishearing the accent. People weren’t usually this polite when you bashed into them by accident. It made the boy sound much older than he looked.

“I’m fine, I’m really very sorry. I should have been more careful. It’s just history’s kind of big, you know?”

Gigi gave him an apologetic smile and stepped back out of his space, careful this time to check there was no-one else lurking behind her. Libraries were so quiet, everyone just moused their way around and how was she to know he’d been standing right there? But he seemed okay and he said he was okay, and she hadn’t actually knocked him over or made him drop his books.

Her eyes flicked to the covers in his arms, and she nearly laughed. That was the book! Well, it didn’t matter. She could find another one, or wait till he was done. At least she hadn’t gone completely crazy and imagined the disappearing book. Though in Destiny City that degree of crazy probably wouldn’t raise an eyebrow anymore.

“Are you studying it too?" she asked. "Or just for fun? What school are you at?”

“Honestly it’s fine” Arian tried to wave off the apology, his voice matter-of-fact. “Accidents happen.” At least he was pretty sure she hadn’t done it on purpose since he doubted that people who did that sort of thing would apologise for doing so. “Good to know that you’re okay too Miss.”

“Fun?” He blinked confused at the girl from behind his glasses at the question. Just for fun what? It took a moment for him to realise that the girl was looking at the books he was carrying and thus maybe referring to them. “If you mean these” he shifted the books slightly. “Then no, not really to be honest.” He wrinkled his nose slightly at the thought. “American History’s one of my extra classes for school.” He added “I’m at Meadowview – or will be properly when classes start again after the Summer.”

Extra Summer classes? Aww, poor kid. Gigi wondered what he’d done to deserve that, he didn’t look like the type to fail anything. Never mind that they’d just met and she was judging his intelligence by his glasses and speech alone.

“Hopefully not all Summer?” she asked, trying to find a bright side. When he announced his school, she practically bounced on the spot, tangled pigtails flying. “Seriously? That’s my school! Will it be your first year, I haven’t seen you around? I’m Gigi,” she added, always an afterthought.

“I’m doing history homework too.”

She maybe still had her eye on the book.

“Well most of it, I had a choice of extra classes over the summer or catch-up classes when school starts up again after the summer and well” Arian shifted the books again. “Doing catch-up classes in school would probably be even less fun than summer classes to be honest and they’re also letting me finish off my GCSEs.” He had a couple more exams left for those and then he’d have to wait until August to see if he’d done well in them. He smiled when the other girl mentioned that she was also at Meadowview

“That’s a coincidence! Yes it’s my first year, well it will be. I’ve not really been in Destiny City that long.”

At the girl’s mention of her name, he looked momentarily flustered “Ah sorry, I’ve forgotten my manners. I’m Arian – Arian Laith. Pleased to meet you Gigi.” He offered a hand for her to shake. At the mention of history homework he added. “You’re doing American history by any chance.” He didn’t really expect an answer in the positive – that would be probably too much of a coincidence.

Gigi had no idea what a G-S-whatever-C? was, but that didn't stop her nodding along sympathetically. If she'd been in the middle of something, she'd be willing to take all the summer classes in the world to get done.

"It's good you'll get to finish it," she agreed, with utter conviction, "It's no fun being behind. Pleased to meet you too, Arian!" She shook the offered hand a little awkwardly, unused to the formality. Her family tended to hug, and her schoolfriends weren't really touchy people. She didn't want to upset a potential new friend, but if this was what he was like when 'forgetting' his manners, she couldn't imagine what he'd be like if he was trying - something out of an old movie, maybe. The thought made her smile. "I hope you like it here. Where have you moved from?" She thought she should have known the accent, but wasn't prepared to guess in case she was wrong. After all, a lot of people couldn't tell where her mother was from, and her accent was pretty strong too.

She glanced down at her schoolbag, wondering whether to pull out the project notes. "Yep, American. You too? I wonder if you'll be in my class next semester?"

“Thank you, people have been pretty nice so far.” Or at least the few that Arian had been introduced to had come across that way. “From the UK. I used to live in the south west near the Welsh border, but I’m living with my cousin now.”

In response to Gigi’s question, he nodded in the affirmative “Yes I am – we did British and some European history at school – it’s not studied at GCSE level so I’m behind in all the topics.” He wasn’t sure about the class thing – despite having Saffron explain things he still wasn’t quite sure how the classes worked in America, but Gigi looked around his age so at last he said. “We might be – I think that I have about two years at Meadowview and then I can go onto” he tried to recall what Saffy had told him “Prep college I think.”

"Wow, long way away." Gigi had no idea where the Welsh border was, but the UK seemed nice on TV. She knew her mother had been to London once, there was a box of photos somewhere. But her dad hadn't been with her, so she tended to tune those stories out and ask about when they went through Europe together. Gigi tried to picture all that distance, moving so far from her friends. It was a terrible thought to her, but Arian didn't seem that bothered by it.

He must not be as young as he looked if he'd only be at Meadowview for two years. Even if they weren't in the same class, at least she could see him around for a while. "You've got it all planned out! I don't know what I'll do after High School yet."

"My whole assignment's pretty much just a 'make-sure-you-listened-all-year' paper. Maybe I could help you study?"

She didn't really think about the offer she was making - just that the boy seemed unimpressed with being behind and here she was revising. It wasn't far out of her way.

Arian smiled ruefully at Gigi’s comment of having things all planned out. “Not really” he admitted. “My cousin’s sorted things out mostly – she’s the one who suggested Meadowview as a school and sorted out the paperwork, I’m still trying to get my head round things – it all seems so different from back in the UK.”

At the offer to help him study, Arian hesitated briefly. Help would be good – really good, but wasn’t Gigi studying herself? He didn’t want to end up pulling her from her own work, just to help him muddle through American History, but help definitely would be nice. “If it’s not too much trouble” he said eventually. “I’d really like the help thank you, but not if it’s going to put you to any trouble.”

Oh, so he was bothered by the distance. Gigi wondered what had caused the move, and hoped it was nothing bad. She pictured the cousin as an elderly lady like her own aunt. She'd have to make sure Arian made enough friends their age not to feel it too badly.

"Well hey, you've got years to decide if you want to do what your cousin wants. A lot of kids go to prep college. Sovereign Heights mostly, they have a nice uniform. I might even go there! The UK doesn't have prep schools?"

Gigi's golden eyes lit up when he accepted her help, and she switched to mission mode with a beaming smile, beginning to plot the best way to get all their studying done efficiently. It didn't stop her chatter, though.

"No trouble at all!" she assured, looking up at the shelves around them. She began to pull down some more history texts, indiscriminate now that she'd be hanging around the library instead of just taking them home. "I bet our topics overlap. Do you have notes on what you need to cover?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 05, 2011 3:47 pm

Arian shook his head at Gigi’s question “No. After taking GCSEs you can either stay on at school and take A-levels, go to college and take A-levels or leave school and get a job. If you want to go to university you have to take A-levels.” His teachers and the school career adviser had been pretty sure on that point.

He blinked as Gigi suddenly switched topics back to history, “Um, Miss” he gave the name of the woman who had assigned him the history catch-up work. “Gave me a list of subject areas.” They’d been jotted down in a notepad. “He found a nearby table and placed his two books down and pulled a nearby chair over so that they’d both have one. It’s in my bag.” Noticing that that Gigi was pulling down books he moved to help, either by moving some to the table or to help with getting together some books to look at.

While Arian set up a study area, Gigi found a stool to stand on and began raiding the higher shelves, handing likely-looking books down to him when he came back. She nodded at the explanation - it sounded like the A-Levels were some kind of tests, so probably the G-Cs were too. No wonder he wanted to make sure he finished them. Gigi was not a big fan of exams. Not that she had any problem with the questions or the format. It was the bit where they didn't let you in if you arrived too late that caused her issues.

"Wow, confusing! I guess... prep school is kind of like college-before-university? I don't know about the exams though."

She jumped off the stool with her last choice of book. "Great! I've got my notes too. Let's see what we've got in common."
