Istas was out in one of the fields that often were used for Kite flying or occasionally shooting off rockets. It was nice and flat for a ways, and easy to run in. The fact she had a kite in her arms and she was looking for some nice breezes today seemed to be slightly squashed when she realized the wind wasn't blowing like the news had said it would.

However, she noticed an older guy with rockets in the field and decided she might as well go make friends. After all, if she couldn't fly her kite, maybe she could get a lesson in something else. She walked towards him giving a wave when he was looking in her direction hoping that the boy had noticed her, "Hi!"

It was the weekend, finally, and the weather had cooperated enough to allow Sebastian out of his apartment in order to launch his first rocket of the year. He'd been working on the new design and actual construction of it over the winter in his parent's garage, something they tolerated well enough.

He'd gotten the thing situated for launch and was stepping back in order to allow enough clearance when a cheerful voice sounded in his direction, coming from a young girl holding a kite and waving at him. Reflex caused him to wave back with a prompt reply of "Hello," following shortly on it's heels. "Not really enough wind to fly that," he continued, indicating the kite with a nod of his head. Lack of wind was one of the things that it made it ideal for his hobby, though.

Istas made sure to keep clear enough in case the rocket was launched as she made her way over to Sebastian. She giggled, "I noticed, the weather man told a story." She said as she sat her kite down looking at the rocket.

"Does it really fly?" She asked looking at what he had set up which obviously indicated the rocket. She knew what a rocket was, the problem was knowing what it actually did. She'd seen plenty of them and it always looked like they shouldn't make it off the ground. Which Istas thought about about planes too, they always looked way heavier than birds and kites.

"That's kind of what they do," he replied equitably with all the long experience twenty years gave him, at least when it came to weatherpeople and the tendency of the weather to not cooperate with their forecasts.

Licking his finger and holding it up to test the breeze (there was still none), Sebastian grinned a bit. "In theory it does, though not for very long. If all goes well, it'll go up, deploy a parachute, and come back down where I can recover it." He cocked his head at the girl and held out a small box which trailed electrical wires leading to the rocket. "Want to press the button?"

She nodded, "It's just a shame though, it's a pretty day though."

Watching as he licked his finger to test the wind she did the same thing, looking around. She blinked, "Oh, are they hard to recover?" She asked curiously watched when he offered to let her press the button. "Oh yes please."

She took the box, "So I just push the button and it goes up?" She asked to make sure, she had a lot of questions "Do we count down first? Like they do for the big spaceships?"

"Not really," he replied cheerfully. "The parachute just makes it slow down so it doesn't get too badly damaged when it comes back down." A wide grin broke out on his face when she took the box; sure, he was giving up the first launch of the year to someone he didn't know, but it was fun watching other people participate in his favorite hobby.

"That's pretty much it," he said with a nod of his head. "Not everyone counts down when they launch rockets." Sebastian paused, a bit of a twinkle in his eye. "I've always found it's a lot more fun when you do." He grinned again. "Ten, nine, eight, seven, six," he started.

Istas looked at the rocket, "Ohh awesome, that sounds handy to have a Parachute on it." It totally sounded useful too the child seemed to be debating on if that was something she could eventually use in the future to help the older senshi.

She nodded when he said not everyone does, "Oh I see." She seemed a little disappointed until he actually started counting down so she counted with him, "seven, six, five, four, three.... two..." She paused wait what came after one? It was blast off right? instead of Zero... she seemed to nod to herself. "one... Blast off!" She pressed the button before looking up to Sebastian with a smile, "I did it right, right?"

Afterwords she was watching the rocket intently, wanting to learn how it actually worked, especially that parachute.

"Absolutely perfect," he said, keeping the smile on his face, though most of his attention was now focused on the rocket. As soon as Istas pressed the button, the rocket went up and up and up, smoke billowing on the ground and dissipating as the rocket gained height.

Eventually, however, it stopped and started to fall, at which point the parachute bloomed. "Be right back," Sebastian called, darting off to follow the path of the rocket's descent. Sure, the parachute slowed the thing down, but he still didn't want it to impact too heavily.

Or let it sit unattended for too long. There'd been a group of obnoxious teenage boys around earlier that had made the older boy wary of what kind of trouble they'd cause. Fortunately he made it over before they could spot it. The rocket wasn't terribly heavy, so Sebastian picked it up and came trotting back over to Istas, parachute somewhat messily tucked into the chamber it had popped out of.

"So," he said cheerfully, "What'd you think?"

The child had stood there watching butter yellow eyes filled with amazement as the rocket went up and eventually came back down, following it's path the whole way. Watching Sebastian run to get the rocket and bring it back. "That was awesome" The child said.

"It's like watching the big space rockets, only these come back a lot faster." She gave a nod, she paused, "Though I've only seen the big space rockets on TV." She gave a pause thinking about this. "Are they hard to make?"

Her head tilted wondering what sort of effort went into making an actual working rocket. "How many times can you fly it?" She asked looking at the messy parachute that the boy had stuffed back into the rocket.

He set the rocket on the ground and smiled appreciatively at the girl's reply. It was, in fact, very awesome...At least in Sebastian's opinion!

He wobbled a hand back and forth while he replied to the question. "They can be hard to make. It really just depends on what you want to do. I started out with much simpler rocket designs, and have worked up to this level." A shoulder lifted in a small shrug as he continued. "Eventually, I want to work on those big space rockets," he said solemnly, as if imparting a great secret.

"Ummm," Sebastian rocked back on his heels slightly in thought. "This type I can only fly once until I repack the parachute and put another fuse in."

Istas listened as the other spoke about the fact they could be hard to make. If nothing else it might be something interesting to at least try once or twice. She paused when mentioned he wanted to work on the big space rockets. "Ohhh would you want to be an Astro-naut?" She asked having a little trouble with the word, pausing to make sure she had said it right.

She titled her head curiously at the mention it'd only fly once until he fixed it. "Ohh, interesting. Is the fuse like something Wild E. Coyote uses?" She asked pausing thinking about all the funny things the Coyote did trying to catch the road runner specially with the roller skates with rockets attached.

"It'd be really cool to go to space one day, but I'd rather work on getting other people there instead." It was a little hard to explain why he was so fascinated with the engineering side of a space program; most people would rather be an astronaut, after all. "I like building rockets," he added with a slightly helpless looking shrug.

He looked a little startled, and then amused, at her choice of fuse reference. "Kind of. Mine are way more controlled than his. Much less prone to exploding on me."

Istas nodded as she listened, it was all fascinating really. Specially the idea of going to space, or helping people get there. "I've always wondered what it'd be like to be weightless." She tried to mimic the 'moon bounce' stuff she'd seen.

She grinned at him when he looked startled, "It was the first thing to come to mind." She said softly with a pause before nodding, "It looks like they're safer. Plus you're not trying to catch a roadrunner."

She paused looking around, huh she didn't have a phone that she wanted to pull out for the time. "What time is it?" She asked suddenly looking up at Sebastian.
PostPosted: Sun Jul 31, 2011 8:59 pm

"Probably disorienting at first," he replied somewhat clinically, having thought about such things for a long time. "But it'd be neat after you got used to it."

He laughed about the comment regarding roadrunners. "True! I wouldn't want one, either. The coyote is more than welcome to my share." Pulling out his phone at her question, he tapped the screen to wake it up. "Looks like it's almost four."

Istas nodded in agreement, she could see how it'd probably end up disorienting you. "Sort of like hanging upside down too long, from the jungle gym bars and then climbing down?" She'd done that one too many times. She knew how funny her head felt after that. "I sort of want a trampoline, they have those small ones at my school for gym class. That sort of looks like it's close to how people walk on the moon."

She smiled, "Roadrunner is cute though, I'm glad the coyote doesn't ever win." The child gave a nod, "It'd be a shame for a bird like that to be hurt."

She paused when Sebastian said it was almost four. "I should probably head home soon, Mom'll have supper ready and I don't want to be late." She looked up at Sebastian, "Thank you for letting me fly your rocket, and teaching me something new." She smiled with another nod of her head, sending her curls bouncing.

"Maybe we'll see each other again in the park? Maybe I can come watch you fly your rocket again when you get it fixed?"
