 The night was hot, too hot for the young mare. She always knew that living in the water drenched swamplands lead to a greater heat, but she did not like it. Long since had her mistress gone to bed for the night, the teepee fires having dimmed to the lightest of an ember. She new in minutes it would be pitch black, knew she would be alone to spend another night in solitude. The sounds of the night were always closer in the dark, the howl of wolves in the far distance, the chattering of small land animals scurrying about for food. She always felt uncomfortable alone, of course, it was better to be alone, no one could hurt you, no one could break your heart. She lightly kicked at the wet earth beneath her hooves, she straining against her reigns, even now her mistress was careful to not let her one remaining prize get way. She lowered her head, she attempting to at least get abit of rest. Laying in the mud was not the best way to spend the night.

Zelfrax was wandering out at night. He couldn't sleep, not when it was sticky. He glanced at his tail from time to time, muttering how lucky it was that it could sleep.
The stallion paused when he saw a light in the distance. He'd never seen it before, or had he just wandered farther than normal tonight? He stepped closer, wanting to investigate. "A camp of spirits? Tail...wake up and look...you're gonna miss it."
Stepping nearer the clearing, he noticed the mare straining against her reigns. Maybe she was in trouble, the spirits had taken a hostage. Zelfrax remembered his father telling him strange things about the spirits. He'd have to rescue this mare...
Zelfrax moved closer to the mare, being as quiet as he could. When he was right next to her he let out a soft whisper, "Did the spirits tie you up? Do you need help?"

It only took moments for the mare to fall asleep, she dreaming dreams of green rolling hill and multicolored flowers. She missed her home, missed being away from these sticky, smelly swamps. There had been times in her past that s he had asked what she had done to deserve this life, but now, she knew. She had been too young, far too young to do anything to save her life, to safe her peace.
She was awoken with a start, hearing the soft whispers in her ears, perking once before her deep red eyes flashed open, meeting the eyes of the intruding male. She letting out a sound of discontent before rearing up and kicking her front legs in his direction. "What are you doing here! Get out...get off our land!" She was making quite a ruckus, and it was not hard to tell there was a human owner in the tepee beside her. "Spirits have done nothing, but my mistress will send you to join them if you do not leave..." her blazing eyes narrowed.

"Your land?" Zelfraz looked confused, then shook his head. "No. No no. This land belongs to my Dad. He stole the swamp from some two-legger. It can't be your land too....can it?"
He looked away, as if thinking it over. After a moment, he simply shrugged. He seemed oblivious to the fact she'd reared up to kick him. "I suppose we could share...we share with the voices Dad hears..."
He looked at the tepee, cocking his head slightly, "Your mistress is in there? And she'll really attack me? Even with my horns?"

"This is most assuredly not your land...this tepee is my mistress's and mine. and if you do not want us here then take it up with those bastards in the main village." She made quite the displeased sound, pacing the ground around him, she did not like that he was so near, did not like that he had been close enough to whisper.
"It does not surprise me to learn you are insane, if you father is as well, there is no reason for your insanity to spread further! go now...go or I will have my mistress here in seconds...and yes, she will make quick work of you, horns and all.." Her eyes still narrowed in anger. Not only did this male doubt her, but he was refusing to leave!

"Insane?!? I think my tail and I beg to differ!" The stallion huffed, the small trees on his back quivering slightly. "If I knew what village you were talking about, why...I'd march right in there and tell them how insulting you are. Insane...the nerve."
He glared at her, then shrugged. "Suit yourself then...I was going to untie you...but now you can stay tied up and be helpless. You know, there's rather large gators in the swamp, skinwalkers too...and fish creatures. Big ones."

The female could not help but laugh at the male, let him go to the village and tell them how insane she was, the two leggers in the village could care less for her or her mistress, and seeing a roaming stallion like this one would certainly scare them out of the leather pants. "Insulting....me?" She laughed and tossed her short, red mane. "it is you who come to my land and speak words of spirits and dare tell me I am intruding on YOUR land...and I am insulting?"
She strained against the reins again, she watching the pole give slightly. "The reins are to protect me....not to bind me. Why would I need you to set me free? I am my mistress's prize, her one true friend. I am certain you know not of loyalty to a human." She hung her head. "You do not seem the type that would have such..."
