so yesterday we had a community band concert and due to the fact that one of the lead trumpets, who had the solo sheet for a piece, was out we couldn't play the piece instead our director decided to sight read another piece for the concert. Well little did I know that the piece was a six pages long and I didn't find that out until it was time to go to the second page and for some reason what I was playing didn't match up with the rest of the band I looked at my music it went from 60 to 393. I decided I would just rest until we got to 393 haha I was so worried that he was gonna Que me in and I was not gonna be able to play what he was cueing because there was no music.

So the moral of the story is, always be sure you have every page of every song you play especially if you are told five mins before the concert starts that you will be sight reading that particular piece.

LOL. Can't tell you how many times I've had to play pieces by ear. We had an outdoor jazz concert, whole town came out for it, and I was playing lead, and my music blew away. Had to improv the entire rest of the piece. It was interesting. All I did was scream XD

That has happened to me before but I was lucky enough for it to be an easy enough piece that I played from memory, Ya for little while I just play whole notes for chords but I got tired of trying to figure it out from the baritones music because I kept getting lost. I'm so glad we don't have many outdoor concerts till summer than they are all basically outside

Well I can improv I have had to do it. This is college level music because if it wasn't all the past music majors in the band would probably quit, haha. Also this wasn't jazz, so you can't necessarily just play a rhythm from your head and have it be accepted especially since we were playing selections from the Sound of Music which everyone knows so they would of been like who the heck does he think he is. Those are the reason's I did chords because than it at least sounded liked it fit but I didn't do it for to long because of how many key changes there were it was hard to keep track of when the note should be flat or sharp. By the way I am on first part for trombone I'm not lead because the first trombonist is f'ing amazing he can reach trumpet range without trying and he obviously has way more experience than me considering he sight reads a piece better than I can play a piece after practicing it for days. This guy is like my idol I can only hope I'm as good as him one day.

Edit: gosh this came off so argumentively, if that's a word. I was trying to argue just explaining mainly why I did chords at first.

i always hated sight reading.
once during an audition we had to do that and i just played the first few measures then ended up playing "bubbly" bycolbie caillat.
