User ImageIshekhesi was taking advantage of the days the carvers had to prepare the shrine stones to get away from everyone, including his unofficial fan club, to work on his songs. He had a roll of bark, scraped off a tree by a helpful klipspringer, and he was making the scratchings he used to mark notes into the bark. He had the melody almost done, but he was having trouble with lyrics. He had no idea what the song would be about.

He hoped the quiet would inspire him a little, but so far he was just having writers block. It would help if he could actually sing them . . .

User ImageFairuza had been wondering a long time and covered some distance that day already. She wasn't quite ready to take a break, but she knew if she pushed on further she'd just tire out later. So she started looking for a likely spot. And there, right smack in the best spot around was another lion. "Pardon me, would you mind sharing your shade for a small while?"

Ishekhesi moved over to make room for the lioness in under the tree's spreading branches, careful to move his bark gingerly across the rocks. It wouldn't do for it to break and ruin all his notations. He wasn't good at remembering things like that. It was why he kept a careful store of his song barks at the back of his den, squished carefully flat between rocks to keep them safe.

"Hello, miss. Have you come seeking the shrines, or are you just passing through?"

Fairuza had to tilt her head and lean towards the male in order to hear him properly. Something had to have happened to his voice. He didn't strike her as the type (though first impressions weren't necessarily accurate) that was born with something like that. "I'm passing through. I've been on a quest, looking for something. But this is a beautiful spot for a rest from my journey." She inclined her head politely, "Thank you for sharing your shade. What have you got there?" She gestured towards his bark notations with a tired paw.

Ishekhesi looked a bit silly as he tried to cover up the bark with one massive paw. "They're just some scribblings. Songs, that sort of thing. Not much worth looking at really, they're just out of my head."

He wasn't used to talking about them with anyone. Nor had anyone ever sung them aloud. He didn't really know what to say.

"How do you put sound onto, is that treebark?" This was very curious. She'd never seen anyone mark down things that weren't physical like showing another the way via a dust map, or drawing a likeness of a mysterious paw print. "Do you ever sing your songs? Or have you taught others to see what you scribble and then sing them for you?"

"I use little pictures to remind me of what the words to the song should be, and then I use little dots to show where the singer needs to make the notes. But I've never taught it to anyone else, I don't show them to anyone, really. No one in the pride knows about them."

He wasn't sure why exactly no one knew about them - he just didn't flaunt them around. Some of the keepers would probably be interested in the ones about their own little domains, though. Maybe he should show his pieces to them.

"Putting them down in that format means you want to remember them. They're clearly important, you should teach others." Fairuza thought that this male was likely brilliant for figuring out such a clever way to remember things. Many prides and individuals would be jealous. "You must be quite brilliant." She didn't see any harm in informing him. "Not only to figure out such a way of keeping information, but being able to make songs too. I am quite hopeless in the art."

"I actually learned the symbol markings from a hyena a few years ago; I don't think the mad old thing realized how brilliant she was to come up with something like this. The songs, though, they just come to me. It started after my injury."

Ishekhesi resisted being too proud of his abilities. They came to him, and they could be taken away, just as his fighting skills had. The lioness would't need to hear all about that, though; no one did. It was behind him now, and it didn't need dredging up.

"If you want somewhere to rest for the day once this shade disappears, I can offer you one of the visitor dens in the pride proper. We keep some empty for pilgrims."

"Will you teach me your writing and maybe let me sing one of your songs for you if I stay?" Fairuza had a decent voice, probably nothing show stopping, as she'd only ever sung for herself. But for some reason she wanted to sing one of this lion's songs. Perhaps as thanks for sharing the shade, perhaps just because it appeared that he could not sing his own songs and had only ever heard them in his own head.

"I will teach you, and you can read my songs if you want, but you are under no obligation to stay. The pride is open to anyone who needs it; you can come and go as you please.

Ishekhesi stood and stretched, moving his rock to recover his marked sheets.

"If you want to come along, follow me. We'll find somewhere for you to rest."
