User Image Chimera wasn't ecstatic about the arrival of the new white-furred slave, but he had to admit it was kind of nice. For one, having an extra slave to pick up the slack after Casimir was gone meant that Chimera didn't have to do as much work himself. For another, it was nice to have somebody around to talk to dad, because Iosef got lonely easily and making new friends meant he spent less time in Chimera's business.

In other words: Zeke was doing Chimera's job, and he liked it that way.

Still, it didn't seem right to let some bull-headed stranger waltz into his life without being checked out. Chimera had a sworn duty to protect his family. Even though that was really his sisters' job. Still, if you had skills, you were required to use them, right?

With that in mind, the oddly-marked wolf made his way confidently across the territory, walking with a swagger that was quite dangerous for a slave to have. If his aunt Varia saw him, he'd be toast. But so far, the coast was clear.

He stopped outside of Zeke's den and stretched, yawning nonchalantly before barking a short greeting for the other.

Zeke was already awake but had yet to rise from the comfort of his den. Life so far in the pack had been decent enough, he supposed, and he was far better off now than he had previously been. Zeke wasn't one to criticize the good things that happened in his life. He never had been. Tuck the tail, dip the head, and mind your own business -- that had been Zeke's personal motto. It'd gotten him by so far, and he was sure that here in this pack it would continue to serve him well.

Ears swiveled idly at the sound of the sharp bark. He wasn't yet able to recognize the different tones of each wolf, but he would with time. This greeting sounded like that of a younger wolf, and only one wolf came to mind. It was likely Chimera, which was fine because Zeke privately enjoyed the younger wolf's attitude and confidence. He would never admit that to Iosef for fear of chiding words, but Zeke had always yearned to be one of those wolves who carried themselves fearlessly.

Rising up, Zeke strode from his small den and shook the sleep off before yipping a greeting back at the strange almost-calico wolf.

"Chimera. To what do I owe the honor?"

He grinned a little uncertainly. Just because he carried himself like he owned the place didn't mean he was used to being addressed like he had anything to offer. The thought crossed his mind that he might just outrank this guy. That amused him, and he stood up rather proudly, his tail swinging behind in short, stiff wags.

"I was going to come with you on your duties today, before my training. To make sure you were ready to take over while Father and I are visiting my cousins in YMCA."

Was that really it? Well, maybe. It sounded good, anyway, so he'd stick with it.

Zeke dipped his head as if a great honor had been bestowed upon him. "I would enjoy the company. I urge you to tell me if I've done something wrong as you come with me. I do not wish to let anyone down, Chimera, most of all your father."

He straightened, tongue lolling out in a sort of half-smile, ears perked forward. "I had heard word that you and your father were leaving for a while." The half-smile turned into something vaguely frown-like. "It will be safe, won't it?"

Zeke had no idea what he would do with himself if something were to happen to the two wolves that showed him kindness.

Chimera's ear flicked, brow furrowing. Zeke seemed utterly incapable of losing his composure over anything -- as though it was impossible to make him angry. That intrigued him, largely because he himself felt a brooding, smoldering anger in his chest all the time.

That someone could walk through their life with such a dopey grin and really mean it was both infuriating and fascinating.

"Safe?"
He asked, zoning back into conversation. His brow furrowed further and he stared at the other with utterly confused violet eyes. "...If you stay out of Varia's way, it should be," he said, feeling as though he might have misunderstood the question. What an odd thing to ask.

Well, whatever.

Shrugging, he turned and sauntered -- that's how he walked these days, a confidant swaggering stride -- toward their duties.
