User ImageKamiya had never actually expected the others to come with her.

It was almost touching, except for the part where it was extremely annoying. For one, a big group traveled slowly. Especially a big group where Mars was always disappearing to get his fix of those damn plants, or where Marion had bumbled off to disembowel a turkey or whatever she was up to. Kami kept walking, trying her best just to outpace them and leave them in the dust, but it was no use -- they always caught up. Determined little bastards.

The orange wolf shook herself all over, casting a glance over her shoulder. So far, it was just her and the Prince who had made it over the crest of the hill. The other four were, well...doing whatever they did.

What precisely were they all going to do when she got back home? She seriously doubted they had intent on joining the pack! Even if they could. Chou would make it, possibly even Mars and Marion -- though it would be close -- but Mercury would certainly find himself chucked over the cliff into the sea as a sacrifice. Hah. Maybe she should tell them that and see if it kept them back...

"Hurry up!" She snapped over her shoulder to the prince. "I want to get on the other side of this hill by high-sun."

User Image Kailani tried very hard not to whine, but a low whimper caught in his throat all the same. His haunches, which were heavily scarred from a long-ago fight, ached terribly, and his paws hurt. Certainly, he had made this journey before, but it had been at a leisurely, meandering pace. Now he was being drug along by a petite orange drill sergeant with the knowledge that if he dared stop she would probably come and rip his face off. She meant business.

"I don't think it would hurt anything to stop," he panted. "I mean, just for a few moments."

He halted, hanging his head as he tried to catch his breath. How was it that this tiny orange wolf wasn't as exhausted as he was? They'd just scaled a mountain! Well, okay, maybe not so much a mountain as a hill. But, nevertheless, it had been an accomplishment, and he had every intention of halting, catching his breath, and enjoying the currently stellar view. Also, it seemed only fair to let the others catch up with them.

Kamiya glared back at him but he ignored her. He did, technically, outrank her. He had to keep reminding himself that. Also, she'd made it very clear that she couldn't go home without him, so he was in control of their pace. In theory.

"Besides, the view is quite lovely," he said, conversationally, taking his breath in big gasps to try and refuel his starving lungs. "See down there? That land we're skirting around belongs to a rather nasty pack of wolves. Reign of Terror, I think. I had an unfortunate run-in with one on my way through the first time." He nodded vaguely back to his haunches. "Best to keep a wide berth, I think."

Kamiya snorted, realized he was down for the count for a few minutes, and reluctantly flopped down to her own haunches. She wondered how long it would take for the others to catch up. Idly, she cast her gaze around the hill-top, which consisted mostly of craggy rocks and a few low, scrubby bushes, and found herself musing at just how easy it would be to hide up here. If, of course, they weren't both bright tropical jewel-tone flags of 'hey, look at me'.

Senka made her way up the rocky hillside, amused at how well she blended into the scenery - not that it came as any surprise; with her shadowy coat, she could easily hide in the mountains at home, too. Her ears swiveled around as a twig snapped loudly behind her. She turned to verify the source, to see if there was any danger, but it was only a little bird, probably nesting. The thought briefly crossed her mind to snatch it up and eat it, but she decided that it was not worth the effort. Too many feathers, too little meat.

The dense forest below drew her eye and memories of her time spent there surged to the forefront of her mind. Yes. Her sojourn in the Reign of Terror’s territory her been…interesting, to say the least, and she was not certain that she would be returning anytime soon. But that was behind her, now, and she had the rest of her journey to look forward to. She continued on.

Brilliant orange and watery blue assaulted her eyes as she rounded a boulder. Curious, she moved closer. Senka grinned to herself: they were wolves. The first one, the brilliant sun-streak of color, seemed to be in a foul temper. The other one seemed to be quite exhausted. What was their story? Cocking her head, she wondered if they had noticed her yet. Deciding that there was no point in idle conjecture, she approached them, her lithe body moving soundlessly over the rocky terrain.

"It's a shame this territory is overrun with such nasty wolves," Kai continued blithely, settled on one of the higher rocky crags and surveying the territory below. From here, the river looked like a long, thin blue snake. "It's really very nice to look at."

"Uh-huh," Kami said, distractedly. Her brow furrowed, ears flicking forward, then back. She had heard someone, or smelled someone, possibly both. Was it the others? Had they caught up with them already? Somehow, she didn't think so...

"Shh!" She tensed, hackles raising, lips curling into a snarl. Intruder. Kami hadn't been so judgmental of interlopers before she had caught up with the prince, but now the idea that she might have found him only to lose him and subsequently lose any chance she had at returning home...well, that was just unacceptable. "Who's there?" She called, defensively moving in front of Kai, drawing herself to her full -- not very impressive -- height.

Senka heard the snarl in the orange wolf’s voice as she addressed her, and decided to make herself as unthreatening as possible. Though she could handle herself, it was better to avoid fights wherever possible, especially when she was roaming alone and was outnumbered. Thus, she purposely kicked a small rock to let the bristling wolf know where she was before she appeared and sat down several feet away from the pair, her tail softly brushing the ground.

“Greetings,” she said cordially. “My name is Senka. I mean you no harm.” Her ruby eyes traveled over the vibrantly colored wolves, noting the details. The rusty, orange markings and amber eyes of the male. The scars on his haunches. She wondered where they came from, then looked at the female. Her curious black spots and brown pads. Most especially, she noticed the way that the female stood so protectively before the male, despite her rather petite frame. Senka was no giant, but even her, lean, travel-hardened frame made the other female appear small. However, that did nothing to diminish from the aggressiveness that the orange wolf exuded. As a warrior, Senka could appreciate that.

“I am a storyteller,” she elaborated, as if producing evidence of her harmlessness.

"We have no stories for you," Kamiya said crossly, narrowing her bright blue eyes. "So go away."

"Kami!" Kailani snapped, ears folding back. He looked genuinely off-put by his companion's mannerisms, as though perhaps he felt it was alright to chide him but rudeness to others was inexcusable. He snorted, deftly side-stepped his would-be bodyguard, and nodded a polite greeting to the shadow-colored wolf. When he spoke, his voice was cultured and amicable, the voice of a wolf who was both used to wielding power and who was unaffected by it. "You must excuse my companion. She has come quite a long way and it seems the journey hasn't treated her well." He glanced back at her, shooting her a warning look that if she opened her mouth he might do something she'd regret -- like high-tail it the other direction. "As we hold no ownership on these lands, we have little right to extend you welcome -- but for what it's worth, you have as much right to be here as we do. My name is Kailani. But please, call me Kai. And this," he gestured vaguely over his shoulder, "Is Kamiya."

Kamiya rolled her eyes and scratched at her ear with a hind paw, looking as nonchalant and bored with these proceedings as was possible.

"We have a few other companions trailing behind us," he continued pleasantly, ignoring the orange wolf entirely. He looked like he was very well-practiced at it. "It seems our Kamiya keeps too harsh a pace for them. I, for one, wouldn't mind a bit of polite conversation to pass the time until they catch up. Tell me, friend -- you say you're a storyteller. Are you out here to share...or to collect?"

Senka did not so much as flick an ear at the orange wolf’s hostility. However, she was most amused by the interaction between the two, and the sharp contrast between their personalities. Though she managed not to voice it, she could not manage to keep the laughter out of her eyes when Kailani - call me Kai - chastised his companion. He appeared to be the one in charge and he certainly spoke with authority, but at the same time, he did not seem nearly as aggressive as his companion. What was their relationship, then?

All in due time.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Kai,” she returned, equally polite. “I would be happy to spend some time speaking with you. At the moment, I am journeying to collect stories; however, if you truly have none to tell,” her voice was mild as she glanced at Kamiya, “then I have many I could share with you.”

Inwardly, Senka chided herself. She knew that she should not even consider poking at the orange wolf. It would be not only rude, but rather stupid, even if she was quite small…but still, the she-wolf was so responsive and snarly, and it seemed so easy to rile her, that Senka would have a hard time resisting the urge. She was rather surprised at herself, really. She did not normally stoop to antagonizing other wolves. In fact, she normally did her best to avoid it. Perhaps her time with the Reign of Terror had left her with more than mere memories. Perhaps it had unleashed a more impish side of her nature.

Kai laughed. "Well, I don't know that we'd be of much interest to you, truthfully." But something about the way he said that hinted that he did have a story to tell after all, and that it was probably a very interesting one at that. He grinned, a boyish, easy-going grin, and rolled back to his haunches; he winced a bit as he sat, the muscles still sore from the old wound. He wondered if he would ever fully recover from it. "Have you traveled far, Senka?"

Kamiya caught the look that Senka shot her, and her eyes narrowed. She understood that expression, even if Kai had been so blithely unaware; it was a taunt, a jibe. If her guard had not been up before, it was now.

Spies. That was the first thought that crossed her mind.

Kapu'Moana had existed long enough to have made many enemies, especially considering its...less-than-moral ways of operating. Was it so unlikely that they would stumble across a spy?

...Probably. She was being paranoid, and paranoia didn't suit her at all. Fact was, the majority of the wolves on this side of Telk were self-absorbed idiots, and that was all there was to it. She set her jaw and looked back stonily at Senka.

Senka grinned, half at Kai’s words and half at Kamiya’s reaction. Oh, yes. She would be fun to rile.

“Far enough,” she replied. “I am over a month’s journey from my pack lands, though I intend to go farther.” She swept another considering gaze over Kai’s body. The pain that his haunches caused him had not escaped her notice. “But tell me, Kai: surely a wolf carrying such scars as yours has a story to tell. You cannot really expect me to believe that it is a dull one.” Alright. Perhaps that was not the most tactful approach, but then, Senka had never claimed to be anything other than straightforward. Kamiya drew her gaze again.

She shouldn’t. She really shouldn’t, but…

“And how is it that your companion managed to escape unscathed?” It was too much to resist. Besides, it might help shed some light on their relationship.

Kai opened his mouth to speak, but Kamiya interjected. "Our prince has the unfortunate tendency to run off half-cocked without his guard," she said, putting special emphasis on 'prince' and taking some pains to speak in the same cultured manner as he did. This slipped a bit as she added, a bit stubbornly, "If he ever listened he would've been unscathed too."

Kai's ears drooped sheepishly because that was true, every bit of it, and it was also very embarrassing. He cleared his throat, because now he pretty much had to explain himself. "We hail from the same pack -- Kapu'Moana, on a little beach, very remote. I...decided that the life that was expected for me was not what I wanted, and so left to travel." That wasn't precisely what happened, but suddenly it felt very foolish to say that he had abandoned a life of luxury and power to pursue the ideal that all wolves should enjoy equality. "Along the way I had an unfortunate encounter with a member from the pack we're skirting -- Reign of Terror. I hadn't realized I had crossed into their boundaries." And he had survived by running like a terrified whelp with his tail between his legs.

He cleared his throat. "Kamiya met up with me some time later. I'm accompanying her home." And he had no intention of staying there, not after he politely explained his case to his father. He had no life left for him there, anyway.

Not exactly the reaction Senka was hoping for from the orange wolf, even if her attempt at a civilized tone was rather amusing. At least it explained why Kai seemed to be in charge even while Kamiya seemed to be more dominant. Kai’s explanation, however, was rather sketchy. She felt that there was much more to it than he was letting on. Nonetheless, even his brief story made Senka grateful once more that she had managed to pass through the Reign of Terror’s territory relatively peaceably.

“I am sorry to hear that,” she said sincerely. “I know that they can be a rather…aggressive pack.” She paused, considering her next question. Which path would yield the greater reward? Which story would be more interesting? Which was she more likely to acquire? If they were from the same pack, Kai might be reluctant to share his woes in front of his guard. By the same token, however, he might be unwilling to recount what had clearly been an unfavorable battle to a stranger, especially in front of a subordinate. Hmm…

“Kamiya says that you are a prince. That is quite rare in a pack. What could possibly entice you to leave such a comfortable lifestyle?”

Kamiya cast a "yes, Kai, why did you" sort of look at him, blue eyes gleaming expectantly. Kai, flustered, looked at his tribal-marked forepaws and pawed bashfully at the dirt. "Oh...lots of reasons, I guess," he said.

If somebody had asked him this same question -- and, indeed, many had -- a few months ago, he wouldn't have hesitated to launch into his explanation of equality among wolves and exploring the greater good. He would have waxed philosophical about the benefits of living by one's own merit. And, moreover, he would have explained this all fervently and honestly.

But now with Kamiya's earnest eyes on him and all the doubts that had been crowding his mind, he was feeling substantially more humble about the situation. "I wanted to see the world, and see if I could live in it on my own." He said. And then, because he was still hot under the collar on the topic and he couldn't hold himself back, "...And all the bowing and scraping didn't seem right. I didn't want to live in a pack where I could have any female I chose and pups were sacri--"

"He believes in adventure more than duty,"
Kami interjected, shooting him a warning look. Her eyes narrowed and she bristled, feeling very protective of the pack. Ironic, really, considering that her own mother had been kidnapped on one of its many raids and that Kami had been born into a life of slavery. Ironic, because she had spent so long dreaming about the outside, and now all she wanted was to go back.

Besides, the last thing she needed was Kai's big mouth flapping and all the dirty secrets of Kapu'Moana spilling out for anybody to hear.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 04, 2011 5:02 pm

Senka’s eyes gleamed with interest. Pups were…what? What could Kamiya possibly want to hide? She cast a slitted gaze at the wolf in question, the wolf who was proving to be more of a hindrance than a help. Senka flicked an ear back, then forward again in annoyance. Clearly, the orange wolf had no intention of allowing Kai to speak of anything interesting, so long as she could allow it. Once more a choice presented itself: keep trying to question Kai and see if he would exercise his authority and speak despite Kamiya’s protests, or change targets. Perhaps the testy she-wolf would let something interesting slip. Kai did not seem particularly inclined to speak of his secrets, anyway. Not yet, at least.

That settled, Senka focused more fully on the she-wolf.

“Then what is it that you believe in?”

Kai realized as Kamiya cut him off what he had been about to say, and he snapped his maw shut. He wasn't quite as desperate to keep the pack's secrets as Kami was, but he was embarrassed by the life he had left. Why else had he gone, if not because of that? His ears flicked and he looked down again. Suddenly he felt extremely uncomfortable. A few months ago he would have bumbled through this conversation without second thought, but now that he had experienced the world -- and realized that nearly everyone he met thought he was a joke -- he was more likely to keep his mouth shut.

Kami eyeballed the grey wolf, carefully considering what to say. She had the suspicion that anything she said would be used against her somehow.

She debated which answer would cause the least amount of pain to fall back onto herself, and said -- not without some hesitation -- "We hail from a small pack that lives on a beach," she reiterated what Kai had said. "We worship the ocean as a living, sentient deity. A goddess that is both loving and angry."

There. The storyteller wanted a story, she'd tell a myth about Kapu'Moana, the angry goddess of the sea. Kami had memorized all of the stories, and they were much more interesting than she was -- and much less invasive.
PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2011 7:02 pm

Senka found Kamiya’s hesitation to be most entertaining. Was she really such a cause for concern? Was she really so threatening? Interesting. Senka was beginning to understand Ulfhildr, a thought which should give Senka some concern of her own. But that was neither here nor there.

So. The orange wolf would go for the impersonal approach. She would try to throw Senka off the scent with a nice, juicy myth. That was fine. Senka would bite; she could always strike later. Allowing her to speak of her pack, rather than herself, might loll the orange wolf into a false sense of security. The shadowy wolf had patience. Now, as for their pack mythology… Fire, she could understand. It was what her pack worshipped, but the ocean? It was most peculiar. She said as much.

“My pack honors fire above all. It is a gift from the gods. What sort of pack worships the ocean?” Truly. It was such a strange concept for the mountain-dwelling wolf to consider.

"The kind that lives by it," Kami replied, simply. She smiled then, the first uncertain grin to spread her maw. "Fire, you say? I've met another who worships wind. Makes you start to wonder." Her brow furrowed. She had never been very religious. Her mother, having been kidnapped into the pack, was hardly a convert to its ways. But Kamiya learned to fear and respect the ocean, perhaps in part because the pack made it something to be feared.

Kai, on the other hand, was deeply superstitious, although he wished he weren't. "You don't want to make her angry," he said, in the sort of sheepishly reverent tone of someone who didn't necessarily believe a ghost story, but thought it best to be on the safe side. "She'll spread over the bank and eat you up. And when all the fish die, and the salt poisons the earth so nothing grows, then you get hungry and you have to feed her so that she retreats and the rains can come."

His eyes got very wide then, because he hadn't really said any of that aloud to a non-believer in his whole life.
