There was something very nice about salt water, to Karne's mind. True, you couldn't drink it without getting sick, but to cool off in the heat of the summer, there wasn't much better then a swim in the ocean.
Karne trotted back onto the beach and shook all over. The only issue with salt water is that his fur always dried spiky after he had a swim, and he'd have to go find a freshwater river to rinse off in again, and there were crocodiles in there. He didn't trust crocodiles, with good reason.
Still, it would be best to get the salt out now before it set, so Karne turned toward the river he knew entered the ocean about a mile off, and jogged toward it. He wouldn' t have to go far up river to get a good rinse off.

Kizuka was at the riverbank, trying in vain to get the dirt and mud off his white fur. He grumbled profanities at his fur, scrubbing at himself to get the mud off. Unfortunately, the mud was creeping up and up his legs and body instead of coming out. "Why?!" he yelled, splashing water everywhere in annoyance. Why would it not come off?
Thoroughly annoyed, Kizuka-bui plopped down, submerging his whole body into the water, his face barely peeking above the surface so he could breathe.

Karne was swimming up river with just his nose up, clearing the salt out of his fur. He had intended to swim right past the other hyena also attempting to get clean, but he was making a lot of noise. Then he plopped into the water, and Karne swam up behind him.
"You're really loud, and you attract a lot of attention. You're going to get some one hurt. We aren't the only things in this river, so you need to be quieter, capiche?"

The hyena practically jumped out of his skin, not expecting anyone else to be at the river and glared at the 'intruder'. "I'll do whatever I'd like, alright?" he said, trying to put strength and threats behind his words, but doing it terribly. Kizuka grunted, standing up again to shake the water off before trying to get the muck off once more.
Who was this hyena anyways? Thinking like he owns the place, he grumbled to himself.

Karne snorted at him as he swam into the shallows and started wading toward the bank. "Especially if all that racket wakes up some of the beasties that belong in the water, right? This is Old Toothy's river, or Big Bert, depending on who you ask and who's closer, but neither the crocodile or the hippo take kindly to loud intruders waking them out of their naps. So do the rest of us who like to use the river, and yourself, a favor, and shut your gob or tone it down a mite, friend."
Irritated at the loud hyena, Karne shook himself dry, spattering the other one with quite a bit of water off his coat and continued heading out of the water.

"Tch." was the only response that Kizu had managed to muster. He hated that he couldn't stand up for himself, or find a good retort to combat the other hyena's words. Managed to get most of the muck off his body with a little bit more scrubbing, the mud now making his legs a very pale brown, he decided that this was the best he could do and he should stop cleaning himself before he turned into a fish.
He too, made his way to leave the water, though he was definitely NOT following the other male out of the water. He himself, was leaving on his OWN accord and NOT following this other guy out. He definitely was NOT. No sir.

"At least you have some sense," Karne said to the white hyena as he left the water and gave himself one more good shake. "Toothy and Bert are bad news when they're riled, although the trick to getting out of trouble is to try and wake the other one up as well. Then they'll fight each other instead of worrying about whatever intruder is in their river, and you can escape." Karne spoke with assurance, cause he had done that before and it worked. He had also known Bert was close anyway when he ran into the crocodile, but confidence was a marvelous thing. Still, he wasn't going to push his luck with being loud or associating with loudmouths when he didn't know where the river kings were.

Kizuka ignored the other male's ramble deciding that he liked how the water rippled when he waded through. He waved his paw back and forth when he reached the edge, liking how clear the water looked today. He was just going to go home and try not to see this other male again for the rest of his life if that was even possible.
Stupid, stupid guy, he thought dully.

Karne stopped midwalk to have a good scratch, right in front of the other hyena, and began speaking somewhat absently over his shoulder. "Say, do you know if there are any females around here? Looking for some fun that, kind of thing?" Karne doubted it - it looked like this guy didn't have much sense or much charisma, but he might still know where a male could go looking for a good time. Or a fight, if the females weren't willing. Either would be good.

Kizuka wasn't looking ahead of him as he was walking, colliding straight onto the other male's backside. "Oof." he grunted (extremely surprised and embarrassed) as he fell onto his rump. Well gee, that was quite beautiful and smooth, he thought bitterly.
"N-no." he muttered, "I prefer keeping to myself." he said, even though he had definitely met his share of nice females, but both he and the female weren't interested in anything further. Or...he had to look away to conceal a small smile, maybe if he introduced her to Kataja. He would have to be constantly catching prey for her bottomless stomach. But then again, Kizu would feel pretty bad that Kataja would have to deal with this unsufferable guy.

"That's a shame," Karne said. "There are few things in life that some time with a female hyena cannot solve. Still, I guess that means I can strike out and see if I can find any myself. It's been a while since I met any that didn't have a load of disgusting pups around."
Karne had a very definite way of thinking about pups. They were gross, and pointless, and if they didn't toughen up quickly, they were useless. He had left his mom at only a few months old, and he couldn't stand the mewling little things.
The white hyena had probably been one of the ones that stuck by his mom forever; he seemed hopeless like that.

"H-hey." Kizuka said, trying to show strength which yet again failed as always, "Pups aren't disgusting. T-they just don't know any better." he had to admit, he loved looking after the little younglings. They didn't know much about the world, and they were so innocent, not to mention adorable. He always liked to teach them stuff they were curious about, and attending to every one of their needs. Unfortunately, he hadn't met any pups (or cubs, he couldn't understand how some female hyenas could eat the poor things) of late, but if he did ever meet one he would treat them as best as he could.
"Y-you were a pup once." he continued, "You should know what it's like being that young and not knowing anything."

Karne turned his red eyes to the other hyena. "They are disgusting," he said flatly. "Especially the coddled. They mope and whine and rely only on being given things and then when they grow up they wonder why they can't hunt and why they're weak. I hated being a pup, and I hate dealing with them. Life is for the strong."

Kizuka seriously hoped that this particular male would never, ever be blessed with a family. A male with opinions like this did not deserve to have little pups to love and care for.
"Life is also for the caring and loving." he said rather stiffly, before trotting past Karne, not really wanting to speak to him after that ever again.

Karne watched the white hyena go for a few seconds, then went in his own direction. He was hungry, and who knew, maybe he'd find a female after all.
