Ok, so today our marching band preformed for memorial day; playing one of your field show songs, taps, star spangled banner, all that good stuff. Well Our director made us come in two hours early so that we could get in some marching practice since we haven't gotten to practice lately because of the crappy weather. I have kidney stones and because of them I get horrible back pains, so I was prescribed Vicodin in order to help with my pains. During the practice I started to get back pains so I took a Vicodin so that I would be able to march. Well after taking this drug I started to get a little loopy, like I do sometimes while I'm on it, and once we got on our heavy wool uniforms and started to march down the street I started to shake and sweat. Before the parade I had people telling me not to march, but being the dedicated band nerd and one of the only first trumpets there I didn't listen to them and brushed it off like it wasn't a big deal. I dealt with this for about half an hour to an hour (I'm not really sure how long it was, but it was hell). Then as the program ended and the spectators left a little voice in the back of my head told me "just let yourself go" and all I remember is my boyfriend and a few chaperone's crowding around me and saying that they could barley feel my pulse. So my little words of wisdom to everyone who reads this; be careful when taking any kind of medication, even if you don't think anything could happen. I guess that's what you get when you're a dedicated band nerd.

And congrats to anyone who read this whole thing hahahaha, sorry it was so long.

That's dedication right there! But I hope you are okay now. I also applaud you though for being strong enough to keep going through the whole parade

One time it was one of the hottest days of after school rehearsals it was like 91 degrees and I forgot my water (worst mistake ever) while doing breathing exercises I passed out evidently my pupils were so dilated you couldn't see the color part of the eye (is it called the iris or something?) and my face evidently turned green I just remember when ever I tried to talk it sounded like I had been crying it was terrible.

Moral of the story don't forget water

Try a weekend of drum corps and then a parade in 95 degree weather and wool uniforms while your chops aren't working. (mind you I was the only lead at camp this weekend, and then I was expected to be screaming out high Cs, Ds, Es, etc today.) torturous I tell you lol.

haha my high school band did two parades (in a row gonk ) in 90 degree weather with wool uniforms that was bad enough I think I'll not take the weekend or the extra 5 degrees.

lol Drum Corps took my arms out and my knees were crying during that parade, but I'm the high school screamer. And the town loves when I bring licks in our parade tunes up. So naturally, especially since they are paying for new uniforms, I have to show gonk

Yikes! And to think I thought this would be a rant about how someone did something stupid while on drugs / got caught before a performance.

That's a really good point though - even prescribed drugs that you take in proper dosages can cause problems under certain band circumstances. o:

Although to respond to bandgeekus shorticus, my first high school football game in uniform was during a heat wave. Band camp was during a heat wave that year too. It sucked pretty badly. Although corps hasn't been too hot this year; it's supposed to RAIN AGAIN NEXT FREAKIN' PRACTICE WHAT.

We always have a LOT of people about to pass out at the very beginning of band camp since the temperate reaches from 105-110 every day but almost every single one of them is freshman. It usually lessens as the week goes on until everyone is in perfect health standing out in 110 degree heat for ten hours straight.
