Amari was bored and though he hated to admit it he was still not quite comfortable with the cushy pridelander life. He still adored his mate and his newborn son but...there was something missing. The excitement and adventure in life was covered with parenting and being a kind and heart-warming mate.
It was this boredom that had driven him from the pridelands and into the borders where he now lay reclining on a stretch of dry grass.
He was a huge, bulky lion well fed due to his mate's skill as a huntress with muscles well toned from his days of journeying.
He flicked his tail, yawned and stretched, hazel eyes scanning the area for life. Nothing? Or was there something out there today?

The hot desert was behind her now and Kinja had come across few on her journey, but something was certainly different about herself; unfortunatly she could not figure out what the something was. For now she was content to wallow in her past memories as she trudged across the lands paying heed to no one.
Unbeknowest to her she had neared her old home, the Pridelands. The boundaries loomed in the distance but the blood hued lioness was too caught up in thoughts of her children and dead mate to really take notice to where she was or whom was lounging not far off. Instead she allowed herself to collapse into the tall grass to rest as the suns warm rays tickled her pelt, warming it comfortably. Upon leaving the desert she had found the temperatures outside the arid land very cool but days of exposure to it and she slowly began to adjust to the lack of intense sun. It was nice being able to lounge in the open without worry of burning her delicate ears or nose.

The scent of a stranger caught at the wind and Amari's eyes glittered with hope. A new face, a new lion to meet...or lioness by the more feminine scent of this one. Oh it had seemed such a long time since he had set eyes on someone other than his dear, sweet Maawio. The prospect was exciting and nerve-racking at the same time.
He pulled himself up, shook clouds of dust from his rusty hued fur and raised his head to roar. It rattled the ground beneath his paws and sent his ears into ringing as he loped forwards, body moving with a clumsy movement across the ground.
He moved with no more grace than a cub, grass and branches snapping underfoot.
Then he caught sight of another and putting on his most charming of smiles trotted up at a more casual pace, head held high and tail swaying behind him.
"Hoy there beautiful!" He called, "that's a rather dazzling pelt you have there."

Head snapped up at the bellowing roar causing the lioness to go into a defensive mode and she laid stark still unsure if the male was friend or foe. Peering through the yellowing vegetation the form of a lumbering male caught her attention and it was apparent he was headed her way but did not appear hostile in anyway. In fact, with that smile on his face, he appeared quite friendly.
Beautiful? Now there was something she had not been called since Kiu passed away. He was the only one whom ever spoke to her in such a way and now this strange male was calling her that. "Hello to you." She spoke softly, blue eyes watching the male cautiously. She had already made one mistake with a rogue male she wasn't about to do the same thing again.

He paused a few paces away and canted his head, eyes glittering as he ran his eyes down the length of her frame. He had only seen one red lioness in his time and had of course tried to flirt with her - to no avail. Yet this one had beautiful details added to her coat that made her even more stunning.
He let a purr entwine with each of his words as he spoke again, moving a step closer. He was a harmless lion, he just adored attention and giving compliments to beautiful females.
"So what brings a rare beauty like yourself to the lands of sunshine and relaxation?" He asks with a twitch of his whiskers, noticing for the first time the slight bulge in her stomach. It reminded him of the first signs Maawio had shown when with child.

As the male approached Kinja continued to lay in the grasses though her muscles were tense and quivering ready to flee should she need. Kinja was far from idiotic and knew she would not be able to fight such a bulking male lion on her own. Her only chance of escape would be fleeing which her lean body was more adept at doing.
"Lands of sunshine and relaxation?" This caused quite a stir within her as mixed emotions flooded to the surface. She couldn't be? Could she?
Eyeing the male she tilted her head slightly. "Where exactly am I?"

The female had quickly regained her slender fame, and stealth was her friend, as she moved slowly behind a bush. She thought she heard a familiar voice, the voice of her mate, the voice of someone whom she sorely missed. He never seemed to be around anymore.
She let out a slightly inaudiable sigh, it only reached the ears of her loving son, Mbari.
Mbari wasn't a paticularly difficult child. He was just extremely clingy, and Maawio was having a hard time socializing with adult lions, after an incident which resulted in her son being pounced by a paticularly adventerous blue cub.
She felt hurt, and for the first time since her mothers death, she felt alone. She had her beautiful son, but he was somewhat quiet. She felt pain, she missed Amari, she missed the way things used to be, and she'd give anything to turn back the time, but to keep her son with her. She wanted him to see his real dad, not some orangey figure that appeared every-so-often.
Hearing Amaris words, she remembered how he had acted towards her when they were young. Why was she so stupid? She hung her head in shame. She didn't regret taking him as a mate, as he was a loving and soft adult, but he was a flirt too.
A huge amount of pain hung in her heart. It was clear Amari didn't feel the same either. She felt as if he had neglected both her and her golden son. For the first time in her life, she felt anger, though remained hidden.

"The Pridelands." He smiled, tail flicking as he sat back on his haunches not wanting to make her feel vulnerable. "Nothing much goes on here but it's a good place to bring up cubs...and meet other friendly lions." He grinned, "and I'm sure there are many here who would like the company of a fine lioness such as yourself, myself included." He winked, breaking into a laugh. Oh it was good to be back in the saddle again.
Conversing with the rare flowers of this world made him feel so alive.
"I'm sort of a member...but not official or anything." He really needed to sort that out sometime with Mufasa...but he hadn't seen the Kin around lately.
He had not noticed Maawio, for he had never been the observant type.

She nearly choked. "The Pridelands?" No, this wasn't good. She should not have traveled to the Pridelands. There were memories here too that she wished to forget, she had, after all, met Kiu here. No, she needed to get away! Frantic eyes glanced around looking for anyone whom she may know even if they wouldn't recognize her besides one, Kinja wanted to stay out of sight.
"I...I can't be here." She spoke as she pushed herself up to her paws completely oblivious to Amari's flirtacious ways. She needed to get away from the pridelands.

Amari looked startled and concern rippled throughout his being. He was a flirtacious oaf but he also had a kind heart and the female looked incredibly distressed.
He moved forwards slowly so as not to cause her further panic, moving to brush his side against hers. "Hey, hey now. No one here will hurt you, I'll make sure of that." His voice was a low purr, most likely inaudible to those who might be listening in.
The purr increased in strength as he calmed her in the same fashion as he did Maawio in times of stress. "No one here will hurt such a pretty lass such as yourself." He muttered, "this is the safest place I've ever been and trust me I've been to a lot of places."
"I'll take care of yah." He spoke this part louder, and no doubt the golden lioness would have heard it.

Maawio had never been physcially hurt, stabbed or bitten, but the pain she felt at that moment was so intense, more intense than any physical wound. She whispered to her son. "Mbari. Stay here." He voice was shaking and her heart pounding.
The lioness rose, pulling herself from the bushes and walking foward. It was in that moment, that she noticed the bulge that was Kinjas stomach. She felt her own stomach flip over and her eyes welled up with tears.
"S-so is this is then?!" He soft voice began to stutter, taking back to her childhood habits. "This is w-where you've been?" A tear rolled down her golden face.
Shaking her head, she began to sob lightly. "Why was I stupid enough to fall for you?" She looked to the ground, unable to look him in the eye as her tears fell thick and fast.
"You are not the one I fell in love with anymore." She said simply, quietly. Her sapphire eyes were glistening, full with tears, tears of sadness, tears of insane pain and lost love.
The golden cub had pushed his way through the shrubbery also and wondered foward, attatched himself to his mothers side as he usually did. "Mommy? Whats going on? Are you ok mommy?" He asked quietly... His topaz eyes widened with concern, and he appeared to take no notice of his father.
Maawio inhaled deeply, "Do you want to know your son? Do you want to speak to him, and understand him?! Because at this rate, you are never going to know who Mbari is."
"I loved you Amari, and you threw it away. You've changed."
The golden lioness picked up her cub, and allowed him onto her back, turning for the horizon, she looked back only to say:
"I'm glad you found another heart to break, because I wont let you break mine anymore."
And with that, she was gone.

Kinja, in her state, unconciously moved toward the male as he tried to comfort her. Oh how her world had fallen piece by piece when the plague struck and now there were only a few tiny fragments left. What was she to do? Run? Run where? She had no where to go and she would not survive for long by herself. Maybe death was the only option?
Before she had a chance to contemplate it more a golden form appeared and Kinja's throat hitched in surprise. Every word the lioness spoke ripped at Kinja's heart. This male beside her had a mate? She looked up at him before pulling away, head hanging low. No, she would NOT be the cause of a broken family! This male had a CUB, a cubhe had to take care of. Besides, Kinja felt nothing for this stranger. She didn't even know his name. He was merely a comfort source for a few mere minutes but nothing more.
Glancing up to the female who was dissapearing Kinja shook her head and beganto move away completely from the male. She needed to return back to the free lands that were unruled by anyone. That was where she would end her life and her eyes reflected her painful realization of what she would do. She had nothing to live for anyway.

Amari was shocked, he stared at the son, the son whose face was familiar and yet strange at the same time. His heart shattered and he felt like he was going to collapse and die where he stood.
And now...now he was torn between two females who needed him. The stranger and his one true love. The remnants of his heart screamed in agony and he turned slowly away from Maawio.
It hurt him to do it. It killed him to do it, but he knew that following her now would do nothing but make things worse. She needed time to think and so did he. Things would be okay...they always were...weren't there?
"Hey?" He called softly to the crimson female, losing the flirtacious tone in his voice to one that was hollow and sad. "Don't go yet, I don't know your name and it's important you don't stress yourself too much." He gave a sad smile, "I'm Amari."

Kinja barely twitched an ear at the voice calling to her. A soft sigh escaped her maw. "You don't need to know my name. You have a mate and now she believes that worst has happened. I can not and will not be the cause of you loosing each other. I...I know what it's like to loose a mate, it's the most horrible feeling that anyone could have. I don't want anyone else to experience such pain."

It seemed the emotion had drained from him. He was on autopilot, behaving as he thought appropriate. His emotions were trapped within him and the shields around them were unbreakable - for now. Perhaps he had secretly known that this was going to happen, that one day he'd hurt the one closest to him.
Did this mean he was a rogue now?
Well...he'd got what he wanted. He'd been given his freedom back. Strange that now he had gotten it he no longer wanted it. Strange that being a rogue now left him with an empty feeling. The search for a home had ended when he was just a juvenile and now he'd lost it again.
"She's a strong lass, she'll - we'll be okay." It was hard to talk around the lump in his throat. "You lost your mate? Is he the father of your-your..." He paused, remembering how happy he'd been when Mbari was born. He'd stayed with Maawio throughout that time and promised to care for her. What had happened since then? Was he scared of taking responsibility? Was he frightened of truly settling down with someone? Whatever it was he didn't know.
"We'll work things out....we always do."
Denial they say...is a terrible thing.
