Somehow, even though they had three scouts specifically tasked with, well, scouting, Lorenna found herself going out on more and more of these missions. It was as though her partners took nothing seriously. It was all a great big game for them and Carmine was the only one who knew the rulebook. For the flutter it was anything but a game. It was dangerous. It was dark and sometimes cruel. Most importantly it was a good way to live. Why spend every day looking for food when the food could come to you? Sure there was some work involved but in the long run it would be worth it.

With that thought she smiled and picked up her pace. "It will all be worth it some day." She repeated aloud. Perhaps that was the only reason why she was out here now to meet the new client that Carmine was too busy to look for. Though she wasn't entirely sure who this new client was. All she knew was it was a stallion that would have business with her. It seemed a decent race track had been located though was this that stallion or was it someone else. Her smile vanished. She was never letting Carmine handle these messages again. The girl couldn't get them straight.

Rocket was sticky. The sweat didn’t seem to stop, even with the shade. He huffed, the grass before him fluttered gently. He huffed again. Nothing else to do but watch the grass react to his breath. Nothing else he could do, really. A breeze drifted pathetically on by, teasing him with a chill. He sighed and stood. There had to be some place cooler. Someplace north, in the mountains. Where snow fell all year round. Rocket smiled and stood, shaking the grass from his coat, creating a green mockery of the snow he so loved. His joints cracked from lack of use, for he had been lying there for a fair amount of time. He grimaced as his muscles stretched and groaned, readying themselves for action.
His mind was the next to rev itself up, finally registering what was going on around him. A mare alighted into his line of vision suddenly, closer than he might have liked. His mind hopped to attention at that moment, his ears perked on the top of his head. He opened his mouth to call out, but the heat dried his mouth and only a crack emerged. He screwed up his lips on consternation, brows furrowed in concentration. He swallowed his saliva and tried again. “Can I help you?”

She blinked at the stallion standing near her with his mouth open like a fish. She frowned. Lorenna hardly had time for foolishness. She had places to be and she was very near them. He closed his mouth then tried again, this time actual words came out. If Lorenna had hands she might very well have found herself applauding his efforts. Instead she stood, keeping her silence, for several moments as she looked him over.

He was a little plain for Carmine's taste so it was unlikely he was one of her "agents" as she called them. Yet, he wore some sort of human cloth with a logo on it. That left three options either he was one of her contacts that had decided to relocate for whatever reason, a soquili coming to do business with them that chickened out halfway there or it was some poor sap who didn't really have any business in the area. Unfortunately there was really only one way to determine what he was and it could easily be a waste of her time.

"Yes, I believe you may." She responded easily before marching into a better position for a talk. "Are you here because of a located race track, a debt owed or are you simply looking to start an 'account'? Please answer quickly I don't have much time to spend dallying around."

If Rocket noticed that the mare was upset with him, he did not give any notice. The fact was that he did not notice at all. He was focus on the fact that he was thirsty and did not know where to find any water. So focused was he that Rocket hadn’t noticed that she had begun speaking until she was halfway through. When he did tune in, he wished he’d done so right away. Perhaps the words would sound less foreign if he had. At the risk of appearing vague, Rocket’s mouth hung slack again. The mare might as well have been speaking another language. “I – ” he began before stopping. “I’m sorry… what?” Race tracks, accounts… it was all meaningless to him. “Races… what kind of races? Foot races?” Rocket looked around for a track. “I don’t so anywhere for there to be races… besides I’m not much of a runner.” He grinned, shaking out his front left legs gently for emphasis.

The rest of the question slowly trickled into his mind. Debt… account. His mind registered that he was not talking about foot races. “Oh… oh races…” Rocket’s voice was quiet, more talking to himself. “Oh, you mean like gambling.” He chuckled a little bit at his mistake. “No, there was shade and so I laid down in it. I was just about to get up and get some water. I’m afraid I don’t even know how to gamble.” He grinned a little, head drooping.

Fetching Othelia crossed her mind more than once as the stallion spoke. He knew absolutely nothing about what went on in this area, or anything at all really. Her pale pink eyes narrowed slowly as she fought back the twitch that she knew was trying to surface. She needed to keep her cool. He was a moron but at some point he may figure things out and come back for business purposes.

"Yes, I do mean races like gambling." She said not bothering to get into any further detail. If he wanted to think that gambling was all she had been talking about then so be it. It wasn't her job to run around blabbing about their other services. That was something more up Carmine's alley. "Such a pity you don't know how. I know several ladies that would be thrilled to teach you." And take all his money while they were at it. It wasn't hard to rig a game after all.

"However, that will just have to wait now won't it?" She said sweetly while forcing a smile. She could trick a kalona out of it's dinner, she could sell a happy persona. "If you're looking for something to cool you there's a little brook this way if you'd like to follow." It was no trouble for her, the meeting place was on the other side of that brook.

Rocket’s hooves shifted uncomfortably. He’d heard plenty of horror stories about all sort of soquili losing all the money they had to tricky games and rigged races. He regarded the mare with gentle scrutiny, adolescent mind working hard to try and decipher the hidden messages he was sure were woven into this mare’s saccharine trill. He took a small step back as she offered her help. He was a simple stallion, but he was no fool, despite those who were convinced to the contrary. “Perhaps…” Rocket ventured, glancing around himself for someone else to occupy this tricky mare’s attention. “Perhaps later… or not. Maybe not, probably not. In fact definitely not. Not interested in gambling.” Oh why not? Who said that? Rocket looked around himself. Why not? Why not give it a go. You’re smart enough to gamble successfully. After all, dad taught you well, didn’t he? He’s pretty smart.
“No… Not interested…” He grinned half heartedly, shaking his head. “I wouldn’t be very good anyway,” he rationalized with a chuckle. Or would you? Shut up. Oh come on, it could be fun. Think about all you’d win! You could get your mom a nice new hair piece. Your dad could get a necklace. And how would Nerissa like a brand new blanket? All warm and soft, colored just for her. A big, bright red R on the side, to match his neckerchief which he knew she coveted? “Actually… Maybe you could point me in the direction of this race? Sounds kind of fun!” Good boy.

It was no skin off Lorenna's back if he didn't want to play. There were plenty of other suckers out there looking for a little thrill. While one additional source would have been handy it wasn't as though they'd be out of luck without it so she just shrugged at his dismissal. It was at that moment, however, when things began to get interesting. Her brow slowly and steadily rose in wonder as he began to talk himself out of a solid answer. She added 'crazy' to his list of traits for being unable to do this entirely in his head but it didn't matter. He seemed to be swaying himself into a mindset that better suited the entire UnderGround.

When he settled into a second answer a genuine smile settled on her face albeit a rather dangerous one. "For the time being we are, I'm afraid, lacking a set place to use. However, we hold events every fourth day and ask our participants in either the races or bets to wait in a certain area. The UG will collect everyone and lead them to the course of the day from there." For the time being the process worked well enough though it would be better if Wolf, Raven and Khaa were able to do work outside of guiding individuals to the track as the trickled in. If all went well today they would have a place to use every time.

"Now, follow me and I will show you where you will be collected. Conveniently for you it is by that brook I mentioned earlier." With a short flick of her tail the flutter mare trotted off down a relatively well beaten path that lead to the UnderGround's meeting area. They used the same place for nearly everything it was easier that way.

Alright, this could work. Rocket grinned brightly and happily trotted after Lorenna. Yes, this could work. After all, Rocket had always been fairly lucky. There was no reason he shouldn’t fair well in this new gaming world, right? And think about the things he’d get for his mother. Beautiful new hair sticks. Red, the color of his father’s pelt, with lovely silver chains. To remember him by when he was not there for they were so in love. And for his father he’d get a red and black necklace. And Nerissa would so love her blanket. Something to snuggle under at night. They all so deserved nice things. Lorenna’s voice brought him back to his senses. “Oh, well, that in convenient.” He grinned, hurrying to walk beside her. “So… how many days from now is that? Did you just have a race yesterday or what?” Rocket could feel his voice speeding up as he spoke, excited to get started. And Candy, he continued. He’d get her some beautiful pink hair sticks. Something to cheer her up after her loss. Yes, she’s look stunning them, and he’d present them to her with his feelings. She liked those romantic things, right?

Lorenna could not help but smirk at his excitement. He did not even bother to hide it and he was so optimistic that is was almost painful to listen to. Oh yes, they'd be able to bleed this one dry. He was already so hooked on the idea that there was little chance that he'd ever get free. It was beautiful.

"Yes, we did run a race yesterday. The day after tomorrow the next race will be held." She kept up her brisk pace as she spoke and scarcely a minute after she concluded the stream came into view. "Ah, here we are." She said coming to a stop. "If you cross the stream at this point and continue along the path you will come to a clearing. That is where you will wait until you are collected. You may arrive as early as you would like, however, the races do not start until the sun is high enough in the sky." Lorenna would have preferred to hold them earlier. Upon suggesting it, however, she had been met by strong, and heavy, resistance in the form of her boss flopping on top of her and complaining about how she didn't want to be up that early.

She sighed trying to strike the annoyance that was Carmine from her mind for a moment. She still had work to do. Taking a few steps to the side she peered through the forest on the other side of the stream. She could just make out the meeting place but it did not seem that anyone was there yet. Was she early?

"Day after tomorrow! Got it!" Rocket grinned impishly. He cantered in place, excitement hard to reign in already. It was then that reality struck him hard. "Er... wait... I don't... have much money. My family never really had any need for it..." Rocket bit his lip nervously. It was true; his family always had been simple. His father and mother only ever kept what money they needed for emergencies and trading with other soquili. Rocket shifted again. No, you know what... it'll be fine. He was certain his father would lend him some. And after a day he'd be able to pay it back... maybe even double it. "Actually," he said with a smile, "never mind. I can get money. No problem!" He grinned again, nodding to himself.

As Lorena looked past him Rocket followed her gaze. "Oh, I'm keeping you." an apologetic chuckle escaped his lips as he looked down. "I'm sorry. You've probably had enough talking to a simpleton like me." He tossed his mane a little. "I've got some things I have to attend to. I'll... I'll see you in a couple of days?"

"Money?" The word came out, just barely audible, as Lorenna's brows crept higher in mild confusion. She didn't know what to make of this. She didn't have any need for money either, that was pale human stuff. After a brief moment she shrugged it off mentally. It would do. Few ever used money to place bets in their races, in Carmine's eyes it would be seen as rare and unusual. Thus it would be worth enough to be bet. "Well, then, there is no problem." She agreed curtly.

Keeping her manners was always important when dealing with new customers so Lorenna refrained from rolling her eyes. Trust a simpleton to apologize for his nature. "There's no need for that. I have another meeting to attend to is all." She gave him a polite, albeit a bit forced, smile and nodded her head. "And yes, you will." Then, with a toss of her tail she trotted off towards the stream. "Just remember, this trail to the clearing. Wait for the guides. You'll know them when you see them."
