Jove had a lot on his mind as he finished his classes, and trotted down the hallway towards the nurse's office. He had seen enough of Nurse Cricket during the field trip boat ride to know that starting down the path to FEARhealing would be hard, and persisting, well, that would be even harder. But the more he thought about it, the more he knew he had to learn it. Putting up with the creepy centipedes would be the least of it.
But Jove was more determined by the minute to learn those skills the Nurse was offering.
In a way it confused him, having so much desire to do something other than not look like a little kid. Perhaps it was because he had spent so long being afraid only for himself, and in his time at the academy he had grown to care so much about others without realizing it. Now he had people other than himself who were important and needing to be protected. Like Ren and Yaya, who were still hurting from the field trip, and others like Junko and Tomoko who he wanted to protect from any harm at all.
He didn't entirely realize it was that hope that drove him, not that FEARhealing would make him a scarier, more adult-like little boil, but the hope that he could help those who had become so important to him. And that was the only thing that allowed him to gather up the courage to gently knock on Cricket's door to discuss the course.

The tap on the door was answered by the scritching of little paws on the other side of it, followed by a barking noise. To those who weren't familiar with it, the idea of Cricket keeping any sort of 'pet' would probably be quite surprising. The barking silenced as the door jiggled a bit then was opened, the nurse standing in the doorway looking down at the boil who stood outside her office.
Ginko ran out the door, did a single lap around Jove's feet then bounded back into the office. The scareon made a point of sitting on the bed beside another one, the other looking at the visitor warily, but staying put because of her 'helper dog', more or less.
Cricket, on the other hand, did not make such faces as her pets did, seeming to stare more..well. Impassively. There was a certain lack of caring to the nurse that would have been ironic in the world of the humans where nurses were meant to put people at ease. Perhaps that was the point, perhaps Cricket simply did not care in the least.
After a long moment of evaluation, Cricket looked at the paper on her door, then at the boil again, before speaking;
"You seem to be unharmed, so you must be here to discuss the class I have decided to offer." there was no nonsense in her tone and she got straight to the point about it; time was something that despite being dead, Cricket did not waste pointlessly.

The sound of little paws on the door made Jove jump back in surprise. He was familiar with that noise, his own foxfires could set up a pretty loud racket when they heard him returning, as they piled against his door and scrambled over one another in their excitement. Surely enough, one of the creatures behind the door dashed out for a quick introduction before running back in.
It was remarkable how just that quick act from the pet put him more at ease, even when he met Cricket's gaze. She was just as frightening as he remembered from the boat ride...
Jove surreptitiously glanced around to make sure there would be no bitey little centipedes attacking him for intruding on her domain, and then found it hard to meet her stare a second time. He could practically feel that stare, examining and evaluating him like a questionable insect specimen. It was like she could see right into him, and would be able to tell at a glance whether he had the potential for her dedicated course.
For a second he was afraid she would turn him away on the spot, until she spoke. He managed a quick little glance upwards again, meeting those unnerving white eyes for a second before nodding in reply.

If Cricket had been perfectly frank, as well as a mindreader, she really had been evaluating Jove on 'is he injured and do I need to reattach any limbs'. Ultimately she hadn't, but she'd had to check anyways. Because that was one of those things she did step in on when the occasion came up. None the less, she seemed somewhat more pleasant after realizing she wasn't going to have to patch some poor soul up.
Cricket barely tilted her head inwards into the office before she walked over to her desk to take a seat, offering another to the younger ghost across from her.
"Very well. I can only assume you have already written your name on the interest sheet." She nodded towards the paper on her door again. Obviously she hadn't actually been checking it vigilantly. If nobody wanted to FEARheal, she wouldn't get anxious over making a large class of it. Frankly if there was less than 10 people, she'd be content. More than that and she'd be flipping tables and limiting it down under that number anyways.
However, she didn't pose any further prompting about what Jove was there to talk about. She just stared at him further, expecting him to pipe up and let her know what his purpose was already. Ginko, on the other hand, would climb all over the ghost boil the second he took a seat.
Friendly little bugger.

Jove stepped in shyly, his eyes following the little scareon rather than remaining too long on Cricket. It was a dog's way of avoiding trouble.
He took a seat, examining the floor, the desk, Cricket's hands, anything to avoid looking her in the eye so soon after his last attempted eye contact. Once again her minipet eased his nerves as it clambered into his lap, and the pup busied himself stroking the little thing's ears and tentacle bits.
Finally he gathered up the nerve to look up and nod in response to her statement, and then glanced back down to pet the little creature on his lap. And sat in silence. Talking was not his forte, and if the nurse expected him to launch into a grand explanation on why he needed in that class, or list off his prior experience in chronological order to prove his ability, there would be much more silence before the meeting was concluded.

It was for the exact reason Jove was doing it that the two scareons lived in Cricket's office, as she knew that she herself was intimidating; perhaps she liked it that way. It would have been surprising if she hadn't. None the less, she waited, quite patiently, for the ghost boy to start talking, leaning back in her seat.
The second scareon crawled over to settle in her lap, watching the boil anxiously. Ginko preened at the attention and settled quite comfortably into Jove's lap, pushing his head against his hands and wagging his tail lightly and hopefully.
After a while, Cricket finally spoke up to clarify what it was she was waiting on: "You clearly have some concern about the course I'm offering. Tell me." It wasn't a 'TELL ME ALL YOUR WOES' tone in her voice, but a demand of sorts. She never raised her voice or spoke harshly, however. That was simply how she was.
It was likely the only person in the school who would ever bring out any sort of 'emotion' in Cricket was the school's secretary and possibly their resident gym teacher. History and all that stuff.
"If it is simply more information on what you should expect from it, I can also do that."

Jove's ears tilted back, and he glanced sideways. He did have a concern. Many of them actually.
When he looked up again it was with a worried expression. His eye contact was a bit more direct than his previous glances, it was clear his concern wasn't for her, and whether she would teach him or put him in danger, or even scare him straight to a second death before he even left her office. And there was some desperation and almost... determination in that look.
He wasn't sure if he was capable. The pup knew he could adhere to strict studying regimens and tiring workloads, just getting as far as he had in one semester was a testament to his motivation to learn. Before he met his caretaker he hadn't even been able to read or write, let alone the basics for the classes he was now taking and passing. He studied day and night to get that far, and he would do so again if he could learn this skill.
But could he learn FEARhealing in the first place?
The pup hadn't said anything verbally, but the battling emotions were clear on his face.

Cricket paused, leaning on one elbow and propping her chin in it, giving him a lop-sided expression, the corner of her lips pulling out in an unsure expression. After a moment she reached out to prod at the boy, as though checking for something..though for curious prodding, she was almost creepily gentle about it.
Ultimately she deemed that Jove wasn't actually broken, so his reason for not speaking had to have been something else entirely. Her expression went back to the impassive look that she'd had before, stroking behind Kurogi's ears while she thought, looking at the expression on Jove's face. There was definitely something up. That much she could determine.
Finally she waved one hand.
"The FEARhealing course will start from the very extreme basics. While I would like to have students who already have a strong grasp of their FEAR and how they use it, I cannot expect it. However, I will not invest this amount of time into anybody who will not be willing to work at it;
FEARhealing is not a talent. It is a skill learned through hard work." As though to express her point she held out the hand she was waving, one of the centipedes peeling its head out. Cricket clenched her hands and the tip of it's mouth pincers starting to turn into an ominous purple.
"I am far from a natural healer. My FEAR is meant to poison. It took me much longer than it would take one with a more neutral FEAR to develop the kind of FEAR pool and control required to heal with it."

The pup took the prodding with only the slightest bit of visible fear, and schooled his expression into one of stoic determination. Was this part of the screening process, her poking and prodding as if to test his inner mettle?
When she pulled back, it seemed he had passed the first test. Whatever it was.
Jove sat forward slightly as Cricket began to explain the course and her expectations. He could work at it, he had all night every night to work at it. After all, he hadn't been sleeping as of late, and extra practice would keep his mind focused. Although the nurse's demonstration disturbed him, he tried not to show it.
Instead he perked his ears forward, that determined expression almost asking where to start. What could he do right now to begin his learning?

"If you get an opportunity, the school's library should carry one or two books on FEAR. They're very basic. However, reading them may give you a basic grasp of trying to get it to do what you want." Cricket scratched the side of her face, the first real 'candid' expression forming on her face as she thought more. Hmmmm.
"Truly, that is the most difficult of all steps and I know I will have to devote much time into helping students do just that when I get started. To some it will come more easily than others. So at most, try to get into one of the gym classes. Red sometimes will help with speaking of FEAR and getting a grasp of it."
She leaned back in her seat again, seeming to think of what else she'd had to go through in order to get where she was. It was a long moment of thought. A very long moment of thought that wasn't really being all that effective for her. It was hard to think back that far and soon enough she gave up and shrugged.
"That should be plenty of work for you for the time being. Just don't push the FEAR muscles too hard. Wearing yourself out helps nobody."

Jove's ears perked. Books he could do! He would have jumped up, after carefully setting the scareon on the floor of course, and run straight to the library if Cricket hadn't made a thoughtful expression and continued. And then his ears fell.
Gym class.
Jove had been in a gym class. And it was terrible. He never wanted to take another gym class ever again, or see another shark in his life. How could they even swim through the ground like they did? It was unnatural. And terrifying.
But judging by the look on his face, he would join another gym class and suffer if that was what it took to learn FEARhealing. Although he would sooner look for another way to develop that skill and control.
He favoured Cricket with a tentative tail wag, as thanks for her advice and reassurance. Jove would do this. He would learn FEARhealing, and then be able to help Ren, and Yaya, and anyone else who got hurt around him. He also favoured the little one on his lap with a good ear scratching, as thanks for the moral support. Sometimes just having a pet around made him feel better.

Ginko seemed quite appreciative of the moral-support-thank-yous, though he was quite sad when it looked as though his recent petting-buddy was leaving, giving Jove a large eyed and sad looking expression. Cricket seemed familiar with the behavior; "Ginko. Stop that." She said, her voice stiff. The scareon keened sadly.
"Just one or two classes will be more than enough with Red. If you're going to heal, you'll need some basics in everything else." the nurse shifted in her seat, sending Kurogi running to hide underneath Jove's seat, shrinking down against the floor.
With that, however, Cricket sighed a bit.
"I have no other advice I can give you at this time, however." she said finally, though in the back of her mind she knew fully well that she needed to take the time to plot out a course syllabus of sorts for this class she was offering.
And possibly look over those books herself to try and figure out how to explain the basics.
