Arachne was seated on the edge of her bed, looking along it at the saxophone that she'd placed beside her. She'd been sat like that for a while; in fact if it had been possible to play it with her mind and not have to attempt to make a sound the normal way she'd have done so by now.
'Jack it..' she grumbled, picking up the cool metal of the instrument and tried to hold it properly so that she could use the keys comfortably and have the reed in her mouth. She paused, leaning the saxophone against her chest for a moment and rubbed at the reed, before holding it with both hands and resting the mouthpiece on her bottom lip. Arachne had done a little research into how the mouth should be to play it, but she was still unsure if she could get anything more out of it than she had done whilst in class.
'Well..' she said to herself, and to her Skitter in a rather indistinct voice.
'Here goes.'
She blew air out, and made a loud and discordant noise, that caused her Skitter to bunch into himself, all his legs going stiff as he went small. She looked over at him and snorted.
'No one likes a critic.'
She carried on attempting to cajole some sort of recognisable notes out of the instrument, using the fingering chart she'd found during her research. Of course she had no idea if she was actually hitting the correct note as she went through the scales that the saxophone could achieve, but she decided that if she was going to have to use this instrument that she should at least attempt to sound less like a strangled cat, and every so often the note sounded at least semi-decent. To her ears at least.
Finally, after a considerable time, she put it down again, wiped the reed clean and fanned her warm face.
'Okay, that's enough practice for today.'
Whether she would pick it up again before the class resumed was another matter..
