And So It Begins...

This is a PRP between King Azreth and MooCowing, showing how Navaria and Azreth came to know one another, as well as how Navaria was Chosen by Galas.

Several mentions of the Six's Agents past attack on the Greater Herd are found within.

King Azreth strode purposefully down the cavernous hallway of the Royal Wing, the heels of his boots clicking against the unyielding stone beneath him.

Smoke drifted up from the cigarette held in his right hand, and the young King carelessly flicked the ash from its tip, the flakes of grey peppering the floor behind him.

A frown creased his brows behind his glasses, his green eyes distant and unseeing. The Six had taken out sixteen Unbonded Azrein in the last month, and the young King had had no choice but to send his Chosen Valdien out to destroy them.

His stallion was supposed to return tonight, and so Azreth had stayed awake, far past midnight, waiting for his Bonded. When the clock had struck the third hour of the morning, the King couldn't stand it any longer, and so had taken up pacing the hallways instead of his lavish suite of rooms.

There was hardly a soul about; only the soft footsteps of the servants' bare feet could be heard slapping against the stones at such a late hour. The King paid them no heed, instead focusing only on the dim-lit hallway before him, his mind a whirlwind of doubt and concern centering around his Azrein.

~ Navaria ~

Navaria yawned wide as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She shrugged her oversized robe back onto her small shoulders and she stared blankly at the screaming teapot. She rubbed her eyes again trying to remember why she was there. As if on cue, three heavy taps sounded from the floorboards below. Another maid had been awoken to make a cup of tea for someone in the castle and the chore had been, as always, passed onto the newest and youngest maid - herself.

With a teacup embellished with emeralds in place on the silver platter she began to pour the scalding liquid. The young maid pulled her sagging robe back onto her shoulders and tied it tight around her waist to prevent her from tripping. She had been told many times that a even single teacup in the palace had more value in her own life and she was afraid of what would happen should she break one.

The small girl lifted the tray and took one last look around the room before she left. Everything was back in its proper place, and she'd better get the tea served before it chilled.

The bell tower chimed, one, two, three.
"Who in their bloody mind wants tea at three o'clock?" she muttered to herself.

The young King raised his corded arms over his crowned head in a delicate stretch, attempting to ease the knots of worry from his shoulders. With a sigh, he brought his cigarette to his lips.

Worrying about Valdien wouldn't bring him home any sooner, would it? But even still, there was no way the King could sleep, so why even bother? Azreth grunted as he took a pull on his cigarette.

Azreth closed his eyes, savoring the feeling of the noxious smoke swirling in his lungs, holding the tobacco smoke inside of him for several moments before exhaling a stream of cloudy gray.

Well, he may as well head down towards the stables to wait for Valdien, if all he could do was worry and smoke. Or was it smoke and worry? The King scoffed. Whatever.

The young man took a hard left to reach one of two main stairways, and took the shallow steps two at a time, his heels pounding out a muted rhythm on the lushly-carpeted stone.

Reaching the last three stairs, the King jumped, his Cloak of Office trailing behind him as he landed in a cat-like crouch. He grinned. The King loved this time of night, when no one was about to see him at his foolery.

King Azreth trotted off to the right, in the direction of the kitchen. The kitchen's back door led into the courtyard where the stables were, and it was quite a bit shorter than taking the main exit from the castle and looping up and around.

Coming to the heavy wooden door that marked the entrance of the kitchen, Azreth carelessly kicked the bottom of it to open it, sending it swinging inwards on its well-oiled hinges.

~Navaria~

The tray rattled as the young maid pulled out one last eye-watering yawn. With the tray in one hand and a candle in the other she made her way across the kitchen to the door. Just as she was about to reach for the handle the door flew open, and a man charged at her. She only had enough time to let out a small scream, and as if instinct were protecting her she dropped the candle, grabbed the handle of the tea cup and threw the scalding liquid at the man's face

The hallways echoed with screams of terror, and screams of pain.

She tripped over her robe as she turned to run. She half crawled, half stumbled her way through the kitchen, knocking things over on her way through in hopes to slow down her pursuer. All in all there was a horrible racket going on in the kitchen, with all the banging and clanging and screaming.

With tears in her eyes and fear in her heart she ran blindly through the courtyard. It wasn't until she fell from exhaustion that she realized she took in what had happened. She surveyed the area around her and realized that she had made her way to the stables. The man had not seen her face, and she knew that if she could just hide for the night she might, just might, get away with it... What she didn't know is that he was in the one place she forgot to look - he was right behind her...

Azreth buried his face in his hands as the tea burned his face, letting out a rather un-Kingly yelp of pain. Thank the Gods he had worn his glasses when he went out, for surely nothing would have saved his eyes. Azreth mopped at his face with his already tea-soaked sleeve, attempting to save his skin from a first-degree burn.

"Gods be damned!" He screamed. Finding that his anger overpowered his pain, the King half-ran, half-staggered after the girl--the child!--who would dare harm the King.

The little brat should know better, all the Gods damn her! Who's castle did she think she was working in, after all? Azreth followed the frantic sound of her footsteps out into the courtyard, and as she slowed, his training immediately took over.

The young King slowed his steps when she did, stopped his advance when she dropped, and slowly, as her small footsteps sounded, he timed his own as he entered the stables.

Slinking from shadow to shadow, the King made his way over to her, the heels of his boots inaudible on the straw-littered breezeway. One step, two steps, three...there!

Azreth gripped her small wrist in his right hand, spinning her around and giving her a shove in the hip with his knee simultaneously, throwing her against the rough wooden wall of the tack room. He was a good eight inches taller than she was, and was obviously the stronger of the two.

He allowed her to writhe and wriggle in his steadfast hold, until eventually he grew tired of the spitting, hissing thing. Keeping her hand held above her head and pinned against the wall, the King placed his knee between her legs, sliding his left arm around to press the bone of his forearm lightly against her throat. He leaned his body weight into her, and brought his face mere inches from her own, his green eyes narrowed and glittering dangerously. He could smell the fear on her.

"Do you know who I am, child?" he fair near spat the last word, so affronted was he.

~ Navaria ~

Navaria's eyes widened and she grew still with fear. Her mouth hung wordlessly open.

"I-I... I'm so sorry, Your Majesty..." she whispered with tears pouring from her eyes. "I-I-I di..." she sniffled, "I didn't know it was you..." Her whole body trembled with fear. She was exposed and vulnerable. She was a low-ranking servant, a child, an orphan, nobody special or important. But most of all she had harmed the king, and she knew the punishment was, and should be, death. The young girl lowered her head and trembled as she forced the words, "P-p-ple-please spare me, y-y-your majesty..."

Azreth felt a smile play about his features. Yes, this was how it should be.

"Spare you?" The King's voice was soft, lilting, almost musical in its quality. "For knowingly harming your sovereign, your King?" Azreth tilted his head to the side, his lips parted questioningly. "And what point would that serve?" The King's eyes glittered with something the girl couldn't put a name on.

He gripped the girl's wrist in his hand just a bit harder, sliding his knee down the wall so his body was fully pressed against her own. He leaned his weight on his right arm so he wouldn't choke the poor brat to death, lowering his head until his lips brushed against her ear.

"To show that the King is just and merciful to those who would seek to harm him?" His voice was hardly more than a whisper. "In times of war?" Azreth chuckled; a low, rich sound in the back of his throat. He felt the girl shake beneath him.

He let out a mocking sigh, his breath hot against her ear, and shook his head.

"Ah, how I pity what I must do, child."

Navaria felt her face hot with tears and her throat began knotting up. Her knees were giving way, and the strain against her wrist was unbearable. Her breath was shallow and she began to choke. Her heart raced in her tiny chest as the fear overwhelmed her.

"P-p-please...." was all she managed to squeak out. The young girl lowered her head. She clenched her teeth and closed her eyes as she trembled in his powerful grasp.

Azreth frowns as he sees the girl so distraught, his upper lip curling in disgust. What a filthy, wretched way to act.

The King took his forearm from her neck, instead cupping her tiny cheek in his hand, though he didn't relinquish his hold on her wrist. He felt the hot tears beneath his palm, and the man ran his thumb along the line of her cheekbone, pausing for a moment to think.

Suddenly, a smile twisted the corners of his mouth. He placed his free hand beneath her chin, pushing upwards so she would be forced to look into his eyes.

"Please, indeed," Azreth murmured, lowering his face to hers. He held her gaze with his own as he pressed his mouth against her unyielding lips, tasting the saltiness of her tears. The ever-present crown he wore slipped a fraction of an inch forward, yet the King simply inclined his chin slightly, forcing her lips to part beneath his own.

The King smirked against her mouth, and drew back slightly from her startled gasp, once more looking her in the eyes from behind his glasses.

"With the salt of your tears and the sweetness of your lips comes this bitter-sweet command from your King," Azreth paused, ensuring he had her full attention. "You will serve me, little bird."

The fear quickly turned into shock, and then anger as the young King's lips danced upon her own. She squirmed in his grasp carefully. She was afraid to hurt the man again, but afraid more of his kiss. Tears continued to stream hot on her face.

"Don't you think you've done enough to the poor child?" said a voice which touched her mind like a thousand crystal bells. Peering over his stall door was a beautiful stallion with scales that shone like sapphires and horns the color of bone protruding from his head and down his spine. The young girl had seen this horse a hundred times, and each time was like the first. She would often bring him sugar cubes she stole from the cook after everyone had fallen asleep. She lost herself in his deep golden eyes once more, and found that she had lost her fear.

"If you've had your fun let her go," he demanded.

"Hmmn?" Azreth let go of the girl, turning smartly on his heel to face the sapphire Azrein. "Oh, Caeruleus," the King grinned. "I thought you were mute, save for the occasional grunt."

He took a step over to the horse's stall, resting his elbows on the lip of the stall door. "Don't worry. You know I'd never hurt her. I just wanted to make sure she understood." The King raised a slender ringed finger. "However." He turned back to face the girl. "I meant what I said. You will serve me. Right now, we are losing to the Six, and are in need of more manpower."

Azreth sighed, reaching out a hand to the girl, grabbing her wrist once more, but this time quite tenderly. "Come here. I really wasn't going to hurt you, you know." As the girl drew nearer, Azreth paused in thought. This just might work...

"Girl, meet the stunning Azrein we dubbed Caeruleus, since he never deigned to give us his name. Caeruleus, meet my little Songbird, Girl." He looked at the two of them, from one back to the other, and arched a perfectly trimmed eyebrow. This just might actually work...

"I know who the girl is," Galas's voice sang through their minds. "She is the small one who brings me sugar cubes at night. I do so enjoy those sugar cubes," he lowered his massive muzzle down to the young girl so that their foreheads nearly touched.

"You are the only one who can hear me. Reach to me with your mind," he said.
"Umm... C-can you hear me? Umm.. Thank you for saving me. The king was cruel and ho-...." she cut herself off, "My name is- " she began.
"I already know your name, Navaria. You introduced me when we first met, do you not remember?"
"I-I do," she stuttered in her own mind.
"You are my Chosen, and I have known that since I first saw you, at a mere six years old. You were barely old enough to tie your own shoelaces back then," he whinnied, "Before I can tell you my true name I must tell you something first. There are many great evils that can happen if one's true name falls into the wrong hands. You must never tell anyone my true name or it could end my life. Do you understand?"
"I do, beautiful Azrein," she spoke out loud. She was too stunned to remember to speak with her mind. She was a Chosen? A poor, orphan, maid to the King's court, a nobody like her was a highly valued Chosen?
"My name is Galas, young one. Remember it well, but never speak it out loud. My fate is in your hands," he nudged her with his muzzle. She placed her tiny hands on his strong cheeks, admiring the spikes around his beautiful deep, tired eyes.
"And mine, in yours," she kissed the tip of his nose.
