Oke was in a fairly good mood this morning - even though she was off to visit with one of the less pleasant of her cases. It would simply be far to hard then it was worth to be cranky on a day like today - the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the sky was a wonderful shade of clear blue spotted with wispy clouds.

Even Dendro couldn't be cranky today, she was sure that she would find the stallion in a good mood for once and if she didn't? Well she'd just have to do her best to fix it, life was far to short to worry about little things like perfect hearing as far as she was concerned and honestly the stallion could have gotten off a lot worse then he did, though he of course failed to see it that way. Maybe in time he would come around - Oke would do her best to ensure he did anyways. Humming a little tune she trotted towards the little group of trees Dendro liked to spend his time in.

Hiding in his usual small stand of trees Dendro was far from feeling social today. In fact ever since he had been injured by that two legger before coming to the new lands he had no desire to interact with the others of the herd. He had lost everything that day, his position as scout, his hearing and the respect of many of those he used to serve. Some days he wished he had have just been killed, surely death would have been better than suffering this life of half hearing, of the unknown that lay before him now. However it was only his sheer determination and devotion to his herd that kept him going now, even if he was deemed useless as a scout. What good was a scout that couldn't properly hear? Well obviously that question was answered by his new position of ex-scout.

With his back turned to the meadow and his deaf ear facing that way as well Dendro was unaware of Okelani's approach. However when he did discover the mares presence he would certain not be happy to see the chipper Putti at all, no he just wanted to be left alone today, and every other day for that matter.

Just as she had suspected Oke found Dendro in his little copse of trees - beaming happily the little mare trotted right up to the stallion and gave him a chipper nuzzle on the neck. "Dendro!" she spoke loudly to make sure the sound carried to his good ear "What in the world are you doing hiding out in here on such a nice day?" She continued on in a cheery voice. The stallion had a few leaves in his mane from the trees over head so she puled them out and attempted to make his mane look as thought he'd been taking care of himself. His skin looked a little dry too now that she was close enough to notice.

"Why don't we take a walk to the stream?" She suggested "You'll never know if your ear is getting any better hiding out in here" She pointed out, or to learn to live with it if it didn't was the bit she left unsaid as she plucked another leaf from his mane.

The sudden contact on his neck made the stallion whinny in surprise and spun around to see who dared to interrupt him. His eyes fell upon Okelani and he snorted in annoyance. "Don't sneak up on me like that!" He snapped at her, though a part of him knew that she hadn't actually snuck up on him, he had just failed to hear her approach due to his blasted bad ear. See before he would have known she was coming well before she even reached him. Scoffing as she talked about how nice of a day it was and picked some leaves from his mane Dendro failed to see it that way. It wasn't a nice day, it was just another day.

Still, as much as he hated to admit it going to the stream would be a good thing, his skin was dry and he couldn't stay away from water much longer. "I know it's not better, I didn't hear you coming." He pointed out in a dry tone but he did start to walk towards the stream, though for the time stayed close to the trees where he felt more at home these days. Besides, if he was moving she couldn't groom him anymore as if he were a mere foal. Maybe he liked having dirt and leaves in his mane, did she ever think of that? No, clearly not.

Oke did not apologize for startling the stallion - honestly he would just have to learn to pay attention with something other then his ears if he wanted to get along with only half his hearing, though she would leave that to herself until he was more receptive to his new life. "Well maybe not" She agreed "But you weren't exactly paying attention either" She countered in a cheerful voice. He'd been too busy feeling sorry for himself - but again Oke was pretty sure that the stallion wouldn't like to hear such truths at the moment so she kept it to herself for the moment.

Following after him as they walked towards the stream she peered at his ear, the knock to his head had been rather severe she reminded herself thoughtfully and there was really no telling if or when he'd ever get some of his hearing on that side back "Are you still taking the herbs I left you?"

So what if he wasn't paying attention, even if he was he still wouldn't have heard her coming. He was far too used to using his hearing that using his sight and sense of smell would take some time getting used to it. Oh yes he used those sense plenty while he was a scout, but there were times when you could not see or smell a predator or other, but you could still hear them. That part had been taken away from him and he doubted he would ever get it back. As they walked he eyed her carefully, she was far too cheerful today. Come to think of it Oke was always cheerful.

As they reached the stream Dendro slipped in without saying anything, though he was certain to hide his relief at feeling the moisture against his dry skin. If he showed any amount of happiness Oke would never let him hear the end of it. Instead he simply turned his head to look at her as he waded a bit deeper. "You know those things taste terrible right? It's like eating sand mixed with mud." That was his way of telling her that yes he was still taking the herbs, even though he was pretty darn sure some silly little plant would do nothing to fix his lost hearing.

Oke watched him slip into the water - almost immediately a small part of the stallion seemed to relax just a little bit, though predictably he tried to hide his enjoyment from her. Seriously...he really needed to learn how to lighten up again, she was sure he hadn't been this grouchy before he'd gotten wounded.

"I suppose your mother never told you the old adage? That things that are good for you never taste good?" she asked him with a slight chuckle. "I know they taste bad..but they help reduce bleeding and swelling and if your condition is caused by swelling in your ear or...bleeding then they might help" She explained...for about the hundredth time. It made perfect sense to her but the stallion either didn't are about the reasoning behind the herbs or thought that she was talking nonsense..Oke wasn't sure exactly which one.

Slipping his head underwater for a moment Dendro wished he could just stay here, submerged and away from Oke. She couldn't stay underwater like he could, nor could she talk underwater either. But he knew that if he stayed here for long she would start to yell and get upset, and the last thing he wanted was to endure another long speech from her. Lifting his head above the surface of the water Dendro flicked his mane out of his eyes before setting them upon Oke once more. He gave his head a slight shake as she spoke. "As a matter of fact, she didn't." That was a lie, practically every member of the herd knew that adage but he was just trying to break that chipper attitude of hers.

"You really think I'd be bleeding after all this time?" He asked her somewhat sarcastically. It had been a while since the injury and he doubted that any bleeding was still occurring, and if it was, well maybe he would just stop taking the herbs and see what happened.

Oke waited patiently for the stallion to come up again, she was sure he would - after the last few times he' tried this trick and she'd yelled at him for it she was pretty sure he wouldn't try it again - and she beamed in triumph as he proved her right by bringing his head up again. "I'm sure she did" Oke told him "you probably just weren't listening" She chided him - honesty he had probably been just as stubborn when he was a foal as he was now - his poor poor mother.

"Head injuries can take a long time to heal - and anyways they can't hurt you so better safe then sorry don't you think? Do you really want to stop taking them on the off chance that they could help?" She pointed out stubbornly to the stallion. She was pretty sure that he wouldn't do so - in another week if there was no change, well then she might admit defeat and tell him to stop taking them but she was still holding out hope.

Curses, she was smiling at him. Now he was completely convinced he should have stayed under water. Let her yell and scream all she wants, next time he would. Some days he didn't care that she was the herds healer, or that she had taken him on as her special little project, he just wished that she would understand that sometimes things are best left alone. "I'm not the only one that doesn't listen." He mumbled into the water. How many times had he told her to get lost but she would stay put and banter on about who knows what. Usually at that point he would just turn his deaf ear to her and ignore any further ramblings.

Letting out a deep sign caused ripples in the water to spread out around him. She just...never gave up. His good ear pricked forward slightly. "Actually I do want to stop taking them." He pointed out to her. "But I know you won't let me. You'll just badger me about them until I take them again." And he was fairly certain that was true, she always bothered him about things until he finally just did them. Heck the only reason he did anything she told him to was to get her to go away. "So how much longer do I have to take those blasted herbs for?" If they were supposed to help then at some point they will have done their job and he would no longer need them. Right?

I Oke had been the type to sulk then she likely would have done so right then at his surly tone - but unfortunately for Dendro she wasn't and so she merely brushed his ill words aside and focused on the answer that she could give him. "Well...another week I think" She told him, furrowing her brow in thought "If theres no change in a week then I expect there never will be"

And Dendro would just have to learn how to live with his infirmary - she had hoped that this lengthened recovery would have had him starting to already, learning to use his other senses to go about daily life - but no Dendro just stood under the trees and sulked until she made him do something. Eventually her badgering would pay off though - she was sure of it - either his hearing would return with the use of the herbs or it wouldn't and all of her badgering would have him adjusting even if he didn't realize that he was doing so.

Another week. Well he supposed he could live with that, at least she didn't say another month or a year. Had that been the case he would have flat out told her no he would not keep taking them and find some new place to hide away from her. "Fine." He said somewhat dejected but hey it would shut her up right. His eyes turned towards the open meadow that the herd now called home and the trees that encircled it. While similar to their old home it was certainly different as well, this would have been an ideal place to hone his scouting skills more. But alas that was not to be. Never mind that he had lost his hearing saving the herd.

Slowly crawling out from the water Dendro made sure he stood relatively close to Oke before giving his body a shake to rid most of the water. He knew it wouldn't bother her, he had done it before, she would likely just smile and make some chipper comment about it. "Are we done?" Really he just wanted to get back to his hiding spot in the trees so he could sulk quietly to himself.

Oke tossed her mane as the water Dendro shook from hi pelt sprinkled her - she knew he did it to annoy her but she never let it actually do so, instead she quipped at him "How did you know I was hot?!? Thank you!" Because thanking him for doing something he was trying to annoy her with always bugged the stallion to some degree.

Grinning impishly at him she nodded "I suppose we are, though you really should get more exercise" For a former scout the stallion was starting to look just a little bit pudgy from all his standing around - of course if she actually told him that he'd get really moody so she kept that thought to herself. turning away from the water she started back towards the trees and Dendro's little hideout.

See! That right there. He hated that. The way he tried to irritate her but in the end he was the one getting frustrated. Maybe one day he would throw her for a loop and act all happy and cheerful just to see what she would do. Knowing his luck she would think it the greatest thing in the world and want to go frolic in a meadow of flowers with him. Shuddering at the thought Dendro let out a ragged breath.

Plodding along back towards his trees Dendro had to shake his head at Oke again. "I get plenty of exercise." He pointed out. "I walked to the stream didn't I? And now I'm walking back. Plenty of exercise." Had he still been a scout that would have been a laughable comment as he would have spend most of the day walking about, or sometimes running, to keep the herd safe. But now, it was a lot. Cutting into his favorite spot in the trees Dendro once again turned his back to the herd.
