Amon blinked when he stepped out of the used bookstore, temporarily blinded, and almost immediately fishing for the pair of sunglasses he’d hooked into the collar of his shirt upon entering the shop. He had only one eye left anyway, and he saw no real reason to needlessly endanger its health – especially as he already was slightly nearsighted anyway, much to his chagrin.

Nephrite huddled in his shadow, the heavy tome she hugged to her chest keeping her from merging with its darkness completely. She had to retain a somewhat physical form to be able to hold onto the book. It was a rather heavy looking tome, hardcover and cloth bound, with the stale scent of dust and age. An encyclopedia on herbs and their uses, covering pretty much anything one ever would want to know – from where to gather them at which time of the year to how to grow them yourself under which conditions – accompanied by a great many of beautifully illustrated plates, depicting the plant in question in its various stages, from seed to seedling, to fully grown and in full bloom.

Opposed to how it usually went, there’d been no quarrel nor arguing whatsoever about the purchase this time around. Amon had simply thumbed through the pages some, once Nephrite had shoved the book into his face all excited-like, noting the beauty of the illustrations and the quality of the paper and the stitched binding, and then had paid up without much of a fuss. There were worlds of difference between this book and what he’d gotten for the young fiend in online stores. He wasn’t into books much, but even he was able to appreciate excellent craftsmanship when he saw it. It was a real shame they didn’t make books like this anymore, nowadays. And then there were the numerous handwritten notes which accompanied the text (this was a used bookstore, after all), which – he supposed – would prove to be useful for Nephrite.

“Should I take it for you?” he offered, turning to Nephrite. It was almost noon, which meant there were barely any shadows about for her to hide in, and he could feel her unease at this.

But the fiend stubbornly shook her head, clutching the precious book even tighter to her chest. ‘No,’ she said. ‘It’s mine.’

“Sure thing.” Amon nodded, before adding – not without sarcasm: “Just remember who paid for it, mh?” He ruffled her hair – just because he knew how very much she hated him messing it up – and then turned. It was unusually hot already for this time of the year, and humid too, spelling a thunderstorm for later on. Heat and bright sunlight Amon had got no problem dealing with, but he intensely hated on the humidity. Linen slacks and an embroidered muga silk shirt he’d purchased on the Grand Bazaar some time ago were thusly his choice of dress today. An unusual pick for him, aimed at mostly being comfortable in the humidity, yet he still looked every inch a beau.

Nephrite – hating on the humid weather just as much as her guardian did – had naturally gone for the lightest silks available in her extensive wardrobe, making her look even more of an ethereal being than she usually was. ‘Can we go home now?’ she inquired, hopeful and slightly drowsily despite her excitement about the book. This wasn’t her time of the day, really. Usually, this time of the day, she’d be asleep.

Amon ran his fingers through his hair, gathered in a ponytail at the nape of his neck with a sterling and onyx barrette. He’d gone extra lengths to straighten the strands out this morning, and thusly was much annoyed to find the humid air caused his natural curls to spring up again. He hated on these with a passion, really. “I was thinking of getting a coffee first,” he admitted. The coffee shops were close by, after all, and it would be a shame to miss out when he was here anyway. “Yusuf’s, maybe? You could have one of their blooming teas,” he suggested, in an attempt to appease his fiend.

Nephrite shifted uneasily, having a hard time, apparently, to make up her mind. Despite her excitement about the book, she was getting into a whiny mood with how sleepy she felt now. But … she really liked those blooming teas. Not that she could drink them, but, she enjoyed their scent and – much more so – the way they looked. So Pretty. One of these days, she’d decided, she’d figure out how these were made. ‘Yusuf’s is okay,’ she decided, remembering how comfortably dim the interior was. And comfortable cushions all over the place. Maybe she could have a nap there. ‘But, only one cup? I want to go hooooome …’

Algie had not anticipated the weather today. Hela had begged him to take her out and since most cars weren't equipped for a driver with her particular physiology, he was the obvious escort. It took barely five minutes, the walk from the car, for him to already take off his button up shirt and be only stuck in his white, v-neck tshirt. He mopped his brow with a handkerchief from his pocket. Anyone looking closely would see his emerald dragon tattoo, underneath the thin white tee, slithering as far away from the burning sun as possible.

"You should have told me..." he complained aloud but was interupted by the chirping laughter of Hela.

"I did tell you. You so don't listen." The young squid woman laughed, throwing her head back. Her snowy hair was swept up off of her neck and she wore a spring green halter that hugged her curves.

"Saying I am not 'dressed right' is something you say everyday. How was I supposed to know that you meant it because of the weather?" Algie adjusted the shirt over his arm. If any passer by had stared, they would see the wisp of Bloodstone, sticking closely to the shadow that the shirt cast. "Bloodstone is fairly antsy. He does not appreciate it very much."

Algie had no idea that he was visiting the Bazaar on the same day as another fiend and bond. Nor did he realize they were right outside of the same tea shop that Nephrite and Amon had just entered.

"You are suuuuuuuch a bore." She twirled her undulating lower body and put on a strict face. In a horribly accurate impression she said, "Sweaters are distinguished Hela. I need the pockets, Hela. I'm too old to look 'cool'." She even did the finger quotes.

"I don't even sound like that.." Algie smiled just a bit. How did she do that so well?! And then he smelled it. TEA. The lovely light scent drifting on the air completely distracted him and his head turned slightly just as his ward let out an excited shriek.

"Oh MYYYY GOOOOOOD." Her undulating tentacles led her further down the street towards a shop. "This dress ahhhh!! MEET YOU IN AN HOOOOUR, ALGIE!!!" His name was blasted above the noise of the crowd but he barely minded, only waving his arm in response.

What was that delicious tea smell?

As if taking the cue, Bloodstone found a cross shadow and darted into the darkened teashop.

"Bloodstone!" Algie almost yelped as his wisp took off, leaving him no choice but to follow.

Oh.. sweet.. sweet tea.

There was no AC running within Yusuf’s, but the ceiling fans were busily turning, their gentle breeze offering some relief. Which was, in fact, just the way Amon preferred it. If there was anything he hated, it was to enter a building and suddenly find himself freezing – it definitely gave him a good idea as to why Rukurai kept frying poor Jasamine’s ice makers. He very much wished he could do just the same to an AC system here and there occasionally.

The interior was dominated by dark woods, but otherwise sporting an odd jumble of design elements from the Far and Middle East as if trying to appease to all the cultures that had settled within the bazaar – which struck pretty close to home, actually. As Yusuf had explained to him at one time, his intention had been to offer a familiar sight to all his guests, something to make them feel at home. There were wall hangings with Chinese as well as Arabic calligraphy, colorful lanterns from Morocco, Berber rugs on the floor, cushions made from finely woven Indian silks …and a small reproduction of one of the Easter Island’s Moai, for serious?! That certainly was a new addition. Amazingly enough, the different styles didn’t clash – not too badly, at least – but rather gave of the air that the proprietor might have traveled Far and Wide before deciding to settle down, and then simply had stuffed all his souvenirs into the café he’d opened.

Truth was, Yusuf had been born in the bazaar quarters, pretty much never left even Dürem in his whole life, and had purchased most of the items right here, or ordered them online.

The reason Amon was so fond of this coffee shop, however, was that they actually offered decent coffee – quite a few specialties, and all of them good. Oh, and tea too – not that he cared.

They had barely entered, a young saree-clad lady whose tan was even darker than Amon’s already making her way to them to show them to a table, when Hela’s excited outcry caught their attention. Really, that level of volume, it was hard to miss. Amon turned and quirked a brow, slightly irritated as he put his shades away.

The waitress (one of Yusuf’s many daughters, actually) offered him an apologetic smile – she was very much used to this. The bazaar’s products really were quite a difference to those artificial, mass-produced items sold in the stores elsewhere.

Nephrite, however, perked up, taking note of the familiar name. ‘Algie!’ she exclaimed happily, the moment the man stepped through the open door. ‘And Bloo~!’ She added, catching sight of the tiny wisp. They were so damn hard to spot. She would have tried to capture him, but she was still clutching her newest treasure, which was too heavy to hold with just one arm even. Speaking of … ‘Loooooook at what I got!’ she said cheerily, holding the heavy old tome out for the wizard to see.

Amon rose his other brow as well, quietly evaluating the middle-aged man who’d just entered. Fancy that, running into yet another guardian and his fiend. Well, it wasn’t as if Dürem was that big, actually. So this was this ‘Algie’ person both Nephrite and Jasamine had spoken of so appreciatively. He did remember seeing him in front of the store one of those days Nephrite had put yet another dent into the roof of his car with her carelessness. He’d been rather stressed out at the time, he recalled, and not been in the best moods.

“Make that a table for four,” he quietly murmured to the waitress. He didn’t quite count in Bloo, as he was just barely able to spot the little wisp (and would have missed him entirely if Nephrite hadn’t directed his attention towards him) – but he’d taken note there’d someone else been accompanying the man, and she might wish to join them later on.

“Hey,” he said, offering his hand to Algernon in a greeting.
PostPosted: Thu May 26, 2011 8:07 am

Bloo was like a dart and Nephrite was his target. The wisp didn't even take a moment to browse, that would wait a few moments. Instead he shot towards the female fiend and appreciatively circled her arms, caressing them lightly with his shadows before doing the same to her book. He seemed to approve very much... but he was very thankful to be in the shaded shop and not out in the beaming sun.

Algie had been quite distracted by taking a closed-eye, deep breath of the lovely tea scent filling the shop. Sure there was coffee mixed in but he seemed adept at tuning that out. Nephrite's excited greeting snapped him out of it and he blinked his emerald eyes behind his glasses in surprise. "Oh hello!" The elder wizard huried further inside to greet her and her... oh! That must be her bond!

"I am so sorry.. it's just. Well it's dreadful outside." He draped his shirt over the back of a chair. "You're Amon?" He gave his signature charming smile and took the offered hand. "My name is Algernon. I'm Bloodstone's bond. I've met Nephrite before in the shop. It's a pleasure!" He was careful of his behavior, hoping not to get Amon on his bad side. He was impressed by the very well put together and good looking man.

Bloo didn't seem quite as enthusiastic. In fact he was a bit scrutinizing. He hovered over the center of the table 'staring' at Amon. It was like he was expecting the other to do something awful at any moment. Of course that didn't happen and so Bloo drifted closer. His scrutiny turned to curiosity and he tentatively reached out with his shadows to 'inspect' him.

The mirth Nephrite radiated easily gave the impression that she was laughing happily – she quite obviously enjoyed little Bloo’s attention.

“It is dreadful,” Amon agreed wholeheartedly. His handshake was brief, but firm, and he offered a polite smile. “Pleased to meet you.” And doubly pleased he didn’t have to explain anything about the fiends or where they came from this time around.

“Forecast said there ought to be a thunderstorm later on,” he remarked in a conversational tone, taking note that Algernon apparently hadn’t paid attention to the forecast at all. Well, that had happened to him as well on occasion. “That should bring some relief. Though I hope it hits after we’re back home, I don’t drive too well in that kind of weather.”

‘That is because you don’t drive well at all,’ Nephrite quipped, a little disgruntled that Algie hadn’t looked at her magnificent book at all. Heavy as it was though, she was grateful to be able put down the tome on the table they’d been shown to, almost immediately starting to leaf through the yellowed pages. She seemed to have pretty much forgotten about the blooming tea she’d wanted, Amon noted with a bit of an amused smirk.

“A pleasure to meet you as well,” Amon added, addressing the little wisp. He had long since stopped thinking it silly to speak to a floating little piece of rock. Though, was it just him or did the little one seem a bit hostile? It certainly felt like it – he, Amon corrected himself – was glaring at him or something. “Have I done something to anger him?” He asked, a little surprised. But that seemed to have been only the initial reaction. Perhaps it was because he was male, he mused.
PostPosted: Thu May 26, 2011 11:47 am

"Oh wonderful..." At the mention of a thunderstorm, Algie groaned. "I'm sure Bloo will love it, all the clouds. And Hela.." He thumbed to the girl who was long gone but had been yelling his name. "She'll be thrilled." But of course he had no umbrella and he was driving.

He had been about to take his own seat when he belatedly caught sight of Neph's book. His eyes grew large and instead of sitting he hovered around her shoulders, peering over them. "It's beautiful! Very well suited for it's owner.." He patted her shoulder, unsure if it would tangible or not, before finding his seat. He gave her an approving wink to his accompany his complument. He did seem to be very interested and even from his chair glanced at the tome every now and again.

Bloo danced back and forth in front of Amon like a boxer before finally deciding that the man seemed just fine and approached. He circled his arms and wrists, emanating a cool soothing aura, and then upwards. Amon may not have seen but the wisp seemed to pause, uncharacteristically somber, by the man's missing eye. It was as if he were trying to help in some way, but it was brief before he darted back to the table top and joined Nephrite over her book.

"Between you and me.." Algie lifted a hand to shield his mouth from Bloo's view but it was useless. "I think he fancies Neph a little bit." Algie chuckled as Bloo's shadows shot outward in cartoonish response to the accusation.

“At least it’ll bring relief from the humidity.” Amon shrugged. “Really, I can’t stand this kind of weather.” He tugged at a strand of his hair, trying to straighten out the curls it was beginning to form at the end, but it refused. Another reason why he wasn’t too intend of getting caught in a downpour, albeit a pretty minor one. Mostly, he just wasn’t very fond of getting soaked. He never quite understood Neph’s preference for those extended bubble baths of hers.

“The young lady,” he said, “will she join us later on?” Given his profession, he did do infinitely better with females than he did with males. Given, his first impression of Hella had not necessarily the best (filing her away as ’obnoxious, and LOUD’), but he was more than willing to possibly correct that to ‘easily excited TEEN’. A category, he feared, Nephrite would join all too soon.

Nephrite beamed, delighted at the attention she and her book were (finally!!) getting. ‘There are notes, see?’ she said, pointing at some pencil written annotations. ‘They are really hard to read, though …’ Her almond shaped eyes narrowed slightly as she squinted at the barely faded script. Printed text, she did well with by now, even though the book used a very old-fashioned type. But actual handwriting kept being exceptionally hard for her to decipher. Still, the idea that someone else had owned this book before, knowledgeable enough to add their own notes and observations to it, it was thrilling. She wished she’d be able to talk to that person … ‘How old is that book?’ she inquired.

“Pretty old, from the looks of it,” Amon remarked. Which, of course, wasn’t helpful at all. “First few pages,” he added, “there ought to be something about which edition it is, and which year it was printed.” He couldn’t pick up on Nephrite’s thoughts as easily as she did on his (in fact, he couldn’t do it at all, unless she happened to be ‘thinking aloud’), but, knowing her pretty well by now, he could make an educated guess at what she was getting at. “That’s also where info on the owner should be, an exlibris or something or other.”

Bloo’s behavior, actually, reminded him a LOT of Rutie’s, sans the hostility. He figured it simply was about him being the male guardian of a female fiend.

Come to think of, he actually had yet to meet a female shadow fiend other than Nephrite. So far, all the ones they’d encountered, had been boys. Odd, that.

He did take note of Bloodstone’s pause at his missing eye, mostly because he was much accustomed to the fact his eye patch inevitably drew attention, and made people curious. He reached out with his hand to lightly touch upon the little wisp. ’Nothing to be worried about,’ he directed his thoughts at him. ‘It happened a long time ago.’ He wasn’t sure if it got across at all, or if the wisp would actually understand – to his knowledge, shadow fiends in that age were very much like infants. Though … something about ‘Bloodstone’ seemed different.

All of the boys seem to fancy her,” he replied to Algernon with a bit of a grin. “Though, so far, she’s the only female fiend I’ve encountered, so that may be the cause.” He shrugged. Well, it made sense in a way, given that – to his knowledge – Doran had mostly nixed his enemies before moving over to Just About Everyone.

Nephrite, for her part, was much amused by Bloo’s reaction, and she prodded him gently. ‘There’s nothing to be embarrassed about,’ her thoughts conveyed. ‘I like you too.’ Her eyes glinting with mischief, she captured the wisp like she had before, rubbing her thumb across the surface as if he was some kind of worry stone.

Now would you look at that. Amon grinned, pretty much from one ear to the other, before he was distracted by the waitress.

“Namaste,” she said, her hands pressed together in front of her chest, and offering a small bow as she introduced herself formally. “I’m Sumedha, and I’ll be taking care of your needs today. Do you wish for the menu, or do you already know what you’d like to order?” Yusuf’s had a lot of regulars, after all, and she did at least recognize Amon.

“Turkish coffee for me,” Amon promptly said. “Any of your blooming teas for her,” he added, thumbing at Nephrite. “She cannot consume it, given she obviously has no mouth, so please don’t be offended if she doesn’t drink it. But I do know she enjoys them aesthetically a great deal. Something with jasmine, perhaps?”

Sumedha nodded, directing her attention towards Algie. “And you …?” A Westerner, quite obviously, as opposed to Amon, who fit in nicely with his exceptionally dark tan. She couldn’t remember having seen that man around.

“Tea, or coffee, they’ve got pretty much everything,” Amon offered, in an attempt to be helpful. “And what they don’t have, they’ll just send out one of their brats to get from the nearby stores in no time whatsoever.”
PostPosted: Sun May 29, 2011 7:24 pm

"If she knew what you looked like?" Algie chuckled. "She would already be here. You know young ladies. But I believe she may join us. Her name is Hela and while she is very intelligent and charming, she has no job." Algie pushed his glasses up his nose and smirked. "Which means if she wants any of the dresses she's seen, she'll be back for some money."

Bloo's shadows seemed to once again jump when Neph commented and finally caught him. The fiesty little fiend easily gave in to her caresses and his shadows seemed to tame, licking around her hand like flames.

"Bloodstone has an innate need to ease suffering." Algie canted his head to the side, motioning to Amon's eye, and then stopped to watch the fiends interact. It was something he always found interesting. "Wounds, stresses of any kind. He wants to fix them. It was almost an obsession for him the first time.." Algie frowned. "It's a bit of a long story but he was a child fiend once. One of the first few that Athan released. The stress from his bond, my daughter, was too much and he reverted to his stone." Obviously he'd been bound again to Algie and the damage had been great. "Some of his habits seem to die hard. But from what I am to understand he's a lot more fiesty this time around."

Bloo seemed oblivious of Algie's retelling of his life story. He simply enjoyed the attention he was recieving. Of course, like a wisp would, staying still seemed to only be satisfying for so long. He wriggled his way from Neph's grasp and approached her book. He started to flick the pages with his shadows, The breeze he cause was not enough to turn the pages but he was eager to help her find the date it was published!

Algie's attentions were pulled when the waitress approached. "Namaste.." He said pleasantly, also bowing his head. He had little first hand knowledge of eastern rituals. He'd vacationed here or there but most of the peak years of his life were spent doing other things. But the TEAS. "Jasmine!" HIs tone jumped with excitement. "Amon you are a mind reader. It's very difficult to find a quality jasmine tea where I am from. Most of it is a blend of various other things and.. " He made a face, "Nothing is quite like a good quality jasmine tea."

“Oh, I so do know young ladies,” Amon remarked with a smirk. It was hilarious getting comments like that when people had no idea about his actual occupation.

Nephrite temporarily peeked up from her book, somewhat distracted by her guardian’s intense amusement – especially as, once again, she was completely unable to figure out just what it was he thought to be so funny … She frowned, and then turned her attention back to the book. It was adorable how little Bloo attempted to help her, and she made sure to convey to him just how pleased she was about it.

“Well, Neph’s a little like that,” Amon said, motioning at the young fiend. “Always trying to help, like, with the occasional nightmares I’ve got. Though she’s got a certain tendency to overdo things …”

Nephrite looked up again and quirked a brow, knowing fully well what occurrence it was Amon was referring to. Suddenly her expression seemed very innocent. Lucky for her, something else had caught Amon’s interest and she was left off the hook. Sort of.

Wait,” Amon said. “So it is possible to undo the connection between fiend and guardian?” That was news to him. “I was told I’d be stuck with her,” he said, motioning at Nephrite, “no matter what.”

Nephrite’s movements as she leafed through the pages slowed down. What … where they talking about? What was Amon talking about? He didn’t want to be rid of her, did he?

The waitress quietly took note of Algie’s order, bowed, and stepped back, mindful enough to not interrupt the ongoing conversation.
PostPosted: Sat Jun 11, 2011 9:06 pm

Algie frowned when Amon asked that question. His expression, almost always pleasant, fell. He suddenly looked very old, worn and very grave. Every line of worry, built up over years and years of his extended life, suddenly showed for the briefest of moments. "Bloodstone.. he probably would have died. And he almost DID die when it was done." The elder man's expression finally did lighten but it had been glaringly obvious for just a moment how much more to Algie there was than the charming and jovial british educator.

"Nephrite is a good girl." He smiled at the fiend who Bloo was still circling around. He stuck closer to her when she looked worried, feeding her some of his soothing aura. "I'm sure her help is peppered with youthful... enthusiasm." He laughed. "Girls worry about their fathers. I have two daughters myself.." Talk of his girls made him light up just a bit more and leave the worry behind.

"I know you're not her FATHER.. but.. " But they care taking they did for the fiends.. it wasn't too much of a stretch.

He had trodden somewhere he shouldn’t Amon realized immediately, so he didn’t press any further. It was just … after having been involuntarily saddled with the responsibility of raising Nephrite, and having been told numerous times that there was absolutely no way out of it, no matter what – he did feel a tiny little bit betrayed to find out otherwise. Even if it was obviously risky and dangerous, he would have liked to at least have heard of it, even if it wasn’t really an option.

“Not everyone is cut out to be a family man,” Amon said sullenly. “Raising a kid never was on my agenda. It’s … difficult, with the job and everything.” He paused, looking at the young fiend in question, who stared back at him with big, wibbly eyes. He sighed. “Oh Neph, no one’s getting rid of you. Come here, silly.”

She flung herself into his arms immediately. ‘Really not?’

“Really not,” Amon promised, affectionately tousling her hair. She didn’t even complain about it, which meant she’d been really upset by his words. Oh dear. “I just would have liked to know about it, is all. Stuff like that, it probably requires a great deal of magicking around, and we know how that would have ended, don’t we?”

Nephrite giggled, though her eyes still looked suspiciously moist. ‘You would have fainted.’

“I wouldn’t,” Amon said, indignantly.

‘Then … you would have jumped, and gone running, like a scaredy-cat.’

“I might have done that,” Amon admitted, rubbing the bridge of his nose. But he was grinning. There definitely was something contagious about Neph’s giggle. He ruffled her hair again, and this time she did protest, fleeing from her seat on his lap.

It was then that the waitress politely cleared her throat to make her presence known. Nephrite hushed up immediately, removing her book from the table and watching wide-eyed as the lady set the huge brass tray upon the table. She’d never be able to carry all of this without breaking it!

Sumedha gave her a gentle smile as she put a transparent tea pot in front of her, the dried tea ball already inside. Usually she’d serve the middle-aged gentleman first, but children were always so impatient, and she was fond of little Nephrite. The ball floated and danced on top at first, as she poured the hot water, but then slowly sank to the ground of the pot as it soaked, the leaves slowly opening.

‘Look, Algie, Bloo! Look!’ Nephrite exclaimed, and all but pressed her non-existing nose against the hot glass, mesmerized. ‘It has a flower growing out. Isn’t this amazing?’

Still smiling, Sumedha poured Algie’s jasmine tea, and then Amon’s Turkish coffee. He liked his with cardamom, she seemed to remember, and was pleased by his appreciative nod. She left a plate with an assortment of cookies as well, and then bowed and stepped back, leaving her guests to their conversation.

“Two daughters, eh?” Amon mused, taking a sip of his coffee. Then the young lady who’d come to the bazaar with him was probably one of them. “Maybe you could share a piece of advice or two. I keep being worried I’ll end up either spoiling or corrupting her.”

Algie fondly watched Amon and Neph interact. Any bad impressions he'd recieved about the man were definitely gone. He may be private and with a grudge against magic, but he certainly wasn't a bad guy and the wizard could tell that.

"Not so into magic?" He canted his head to the side and Bloo shot back to him, settling back onto his finger as shadowy armor while Neph hugged her guardian. His little shadows reached out and attempted a hug.. Oh how the little wisp wished to be bigger! "How did your bonding happen?"

Algie leaned back as the tea came and took in a deep breath. "Wonderful!" It was said softly, with his eyes closed. Bloo dislodged himself and went to Neph, clinking himself against the clear glass with interest.

"Yes yes.. two girls.." He could see the door to the teashop and he saw Hela's undulating form and heard her giggle pass. She apparently was not yet done, probably writing a LIST of what she wanted. "Two of my daughters from my ex-wife. Hela is just a ward. She came to me almost fully adult. But I'd say.. hmm well..." He scratched his head and laughed.

"Girls are all so different! But it's important to support them. Even if you think what they are doing is crazy or they are being too emotional.." He gave Amon a pointed look. Mostly because ALL girls had a bit of a flair for the dramatic. "If they know that they can always ALWAYS rely on you.." He gave a small thumbs up and a nod. "Thats what they need."

So not into magic,” Amon confirmed, his expression darkening. “I realize it staying out of my life is not going to happen, what with …her,” he motioned at Nephrite, “but I prefer to have as little to do with it as possible. It’s nothing but trouble.” Not to mention he was deathly afraid of it and gave everything a wide berth which even remotely looked like runes or spell work. Add a good amount of superstitions and misconceptions of magic on top of that, plus the first-hand experience of being some devil summoner cult’s chosen sacrifice …

Not to mention the fact things randomly liked to burst into flames in his presence. Yes, his relationship to magic was definitely a rather troubled one.

“Ah. She was supposed to be a gift. The stone, I mean.” He motioned at Nephrite again. The stone on her chest wasn’t visible – as usual it was covered up by the silken fabrics of her gown. “I was looking for a gift to give to a young lady I was to accompany to a St. Patrick’s Day party. So, something green it had to be, something like a … carved jade pendant. Twilight Designs was highly recommended to me by a friend for its classy and one-of-a-kind line of jewelry.” Amon clasped his hands, fingers intertwining, and rested his chin on top. “She – Neph, I mean – was back with me next morning. At that point I was convinced the stone had to be cursed or something.” Which wasn’t too far from the truth, actually. “Occasionally I still wonder why she didn’t soul-bind to her instead.”

Nephrite eyed her guardian with interest – it was rare for him to mention where she’d come from, and she couldn’t quite shake the feeling there was more to it. The story never seemed … quite finished. But the tea flower was so much more interesting! Eyes narrowing like a cat’s, she tried getting to it, her fingers dipping into the still steaming water only to pull them back immediately. Hot!

‘Get it for me,’ she ordered Amon.

“How about no,” Amon said simply. “You don’t play with your food. Or beverage. Besides, once it’s out of the water, it’ll look all floppy and ugly.”

‘But I want to know how it’s made,’ Nephrite insisted.

Amon sighed. “That’s a rather rude thing to do here, actually. Just enjoy how pretty it is. I’m sure you can look up how something like this is made on the internet.”

Nephrite paused, contemplating. ‘Does this mean I can use your laptop?’ she finally asked.

Amon considered this. He rarely allowed Nephrite to make use of any of his technologically more advanced appliances, once he’d found out that the warning about fiends’ corruptive nature not getting along well with modern technology was indeed very true. “The old one,” he said. “Not my work one. And only while I’m around.” Who knew what she’d stumble upon while he wasn’t? Plus, she had the habit of nicking his credit cards at every opportunity offered to her.

‘Okay~!’ Nephrite chimed cheerfully, appeased for now. Despite what Amon had said, she tried to get to the pretty tea flower again. ‘Ow!’ Still too hot. This wasn’t working. So instead she eyed little Bloo with a calculating look. He liked her, right? ‘Get it for me,’ she pretty much ordered him around.

Amon sighed. Well, at least it seemed she hadn’t ‘inherited’ his resistance to heat … yet. He was well aware by now that this might still change as she evolved.

“Yeah, I know females generally are high maintenance,” he admitted with a wry grin. “Can’t help but. But my realm of expertise lies more with the adult variety of the species, not the tiny ones.” Giving Nephrite a sharp look, he dipped his fingers into the still steaming water just like that, fetching the tea flower for her. “Don’t do that,” he said sternly, “asking others to do dangerous things for you. Bloo’s still little, he can’t judge how dangerous it might be. Sudden high heat can crack stones, you know that?” He idly wondered what that would do, if the stone was one which had a soul trapped inside. Thinking twice, he decided he’d rather not want to know, thank you.

Algie was really unsure if he should mention the very obvious, after a first meeting, fact that he was a wizard. By birth, blood, education and profession. He was very magical, through and through. He even cast a glance to Nephrite. The little fiend knew what he was but she seemed very preoccupied with her blooming tea.

"Quite a surprise.." was his only comment about the acquisition of Nephrite. Honestly he was still stuck on the magic thing. He was a rather honest person and felt wrong not telling Amon he was a wizard. At the same time he didn't want to ruin this wonderful tea with any sort of confrontation, no matter how minor.

Bloo was all ready to zoom into the hot water. Algie gasped, reaching out as the wisp headed for the tea but thankfully Amon bypassed it.

"He's a bit chivalrous, this one." Algie just shook his head at Bloo who looked rather excited to have almost dove into almost boiling liquid.

“Yeah, I always thought the border between chivalry and just plain stupidity was kinda fluent.” Amon smirked, hoping his remark wouldn’t be taken as rudeness, but the joke it was intended to be. You never knew, with elderly people, and while Algernon quite certainly wasn’t as ancient as Athan, he had a similar air of being fairly old-fashioned in his views about him. “I’ve learned to stay clear of that, for the most part.”

“Something amiss?” he inquired, the wizard’s troubled look fairly apparent to him. Something quite certainly preoccupied the his mind, that much was for certain. Little did he know it had to do directly with his own peculiarities.

Nephrite caught Algie’s glance, sure enough, but she was way too busy picking apart her floppy blooming tea, trying to figure out just how it had been made, so she merely shrugged.

(( OOC note: I absolutely don’t mind IC conflicts, so, if you don’t either, feel free to have Algie break his nature to Amon. Can’t say how he’d react for sure, that depends on just too many variables. ))
