Jove knew he probably shouldn't be wandering around off-campus in his natural form... He wasn't much more than a slip of a ghostling, all fluff without the benefit of a scary bark or bite, and there were a multitude of things that could happen to a tiny puppy. He was sure his brother would be worried, if the gryphon knew about his forays into the woods. But the pup had an increasingly strong desire to resume his regular walks, which often took him outside the school campus.
He felt better every time he was outside in the forest, where it was heavily shaded and the air was thick with the scent of rotting vegetation. There were mushrooms everywhere, he could smell them, and part of him longed to stay out all afternoon and into the evening when they would glow and the fireflies would be out. But Ren would certainly protest to that. No, he had to come back before it got dark or his brother would have a brain aneurism or something.

Tybalt too, was out on one of his daily walks and he too in his natural form. As used to his two legged human form as he was now, it was much easier to move on all fours and at the ground level he was used to. Unfortunately, being stuck in the school most of the day meant that he couldn't return to this form until he was either back in his dorm room, or outside. This time it was the latter.
What he didn't know was that the little ghost wisp was in the area as well and with no scent to alert him and as tiny as Jove was, the black dog literally stepped right over him. Still completely oblivious to his presence. Fortunately he didn't step on the little pup. That would have been awful considering he was roughly the size of his paw.

It was startling to say the least, when suddenly a huge shadow was cast over the pup. Had he not been paying attention?! Something had snuck up on him already, and he was going to be eaten, fluff and all. And when Ren found his twice-dead body, Jove was certain he would be killed again for going out alone...
He cowered for a second, awed and terrified by the sheer size of the black dog stepping right over him, but then the fear faded as he recognized the scent. It was one he knew from the ghost dorms, and had been able to identify during the mushroom hunting. Jove's little ears perked. Was this giant figure Tybalt's natural form? Without a sound he trotted along next to the other student, looking up with bright, curious eyes.

Tybalt continued walking, unaware of the little ghost wisp now trotting alongside him. That was, up until a small crack of a twig alerted him to Jove's presence.
The black dog would have been startled, since the source was right beside him. The only thing that stopped from actually jumping with a yelp was that the sound was tiny. Almost like a brave rabbit had just ran up beside him. Unlikely as that was, Tybalt decided to look down and was surprised to see one of the tiniest creatures he had ever seen in his entire undead life; looking back up at him with large eyes.
"You are..?" He questioned. Stopping and lowering his head to get a better look at the foxfire. He looked familiar. In fact, he swore he had met him just recently. But he couldn't put a name to that face and with no scent to aid him, the black dog was left with the option of asking.

Jove had to keep up a rather peppy trot to match Tybalt's natural pace, his little paws silently flying over the loam and dead leaves. His fur seemed to bounce as he trotted along. Finally he slowed down and came to a stop as Tybalt did.
He gave the big dog a somewhat disappointed look that read "Come on, please don't say I have to help you out with this too..." At least Tybalt wasn't mistaking him for a pet, or a lost puppy, it sounded like he actually expected Jove to reply. So he did. Not verbally as Tybalt might have preferred, but by puffing out his fluffy chest and giving his tail a couple wags as if to say "it's me, remember?"

The look did not register in the black dog's brain. Though it did nag at him. He knew he had seen this guy before and recently... but where? It was only when the little guy puffed out his chest and wagged his tail did he actually clue in on who it was.
"Oh! Jove, right?" He asked, not wanting to sound like an idiot if he had gotten it wrong. But now he could see why his human form was so tiny. Not that he would tease him about his height or anything. Tybalt knew all too well how annoying it was to be called short. Thanks to that damn gryphon!
"What you doing out here? Hunting for more mushrooms?" He asked; sitting down and waiting for a response of some sort. Though to be honest, he wondered if Jove could even speak in this form. He hoped so. Even if it was barking. But if he couldn't? Well... this may be a very long and confusing conversation.

Jove's tail gave another pleased wag when he saw the lights go on in the other ghost's eyes. For a moment he was afraid it could have gone either way.
He wasn't sure why it took so long, his human form wasn't all that different in appearance... He had the freckles and fluffy hair, the fluffy ears, and even the shadows cast by his long bangs mimicked the darker parti markings over his eyes. Looking at Tybalt, he realized the black dog also shared enough similarities in this form. If Jove hadn't recognized the scent he might have noticed the similar glowing eyes, pointy teeth, and wispy tail. Although Tybalt was HUGE in this form. If he had been a wild animal, Jove would have been devoured in one good chomp. Good thing they had met before.
The pup shook his head in reply to Tybalt's next question. Although he could speak in his current form, it was about as frequent as in his human form. Which meant Tybalt would be lucky to get so much as a hiccup from him. In fact, his caretaker had gone several days before hearing Jove speak, at which point he had been very flustered indeed.
Jove trotted a couple steps away, leaning into the motion and perking his ears as though asking if Tybalt wanted to walk with him.

Well it seemed it was indeed Jove. Though from the lack of speech, he had yet to figure out if he was capable of it. Then again, he rarely spoke during the brief time they had met in the forest before. So maybe it wasn't that he couldn't speak, but more like he didn't feel like it? Still. A word or two would be nice.
"Not hunting mushrooms, huh..." He decided at the little wisp's head shake. Now thankful that he wouldn't have to embarrass himself and look for more. That day frustrated him and if possible, he would like to forget that it had ever happened. Or at least the disastrous part anyways. Still, it was thanks to that event, that he met Jove in the first place.
Noting the invitation to join him, The black dog followed; slowing his pace enough so that Jove wouldn't have to move too quickly on those short little legs, but not slow enough that Jove would think he was treating him as though he couldn't keep up if he kept his usual pace. "What is it you out here for then? Practice for something? Or just a walk?" He asked. Not really expecting an answer.

Jove glanced up and nodded again. Just a walk today, through the woods.
When he arrived at the academy he had believed all the other students to be overly noisy and chatty. But slowly he came to realize talking was as natural a state for others as silence was for him, and in many cases it helped bridge the communication gap that might have otherwise formed. Not everyone was comfortable reading body language, or perceptive to the finer subtleties, but when they asked questions it could definitely facilitate understanding.
Thankfully Jove remained oblivious to Tybalt's consideration both for his diminutive stature and his often delicate pride. He was quite happy just trotting along, at a pace somewhere between a walk and the quick run necessary to keep up with the black dog's normal stride. It was surprisingly pleasant to walk with a friend!
He didn't smile, but his tail curled up happily over his back, his ears perked, and the tip of his little pink tongue stuck out of his mouth as he trotted along.

Tybalt wasn't quite sure what the nod indicated, but it wasn't like it really mattered. Jove seemed quite content with the silence and as much as the black dog enjoyed a bit of conversation, a quiet walk now and again was a nice change too. It was just too bad Tybalt could rarely keep his trap shut.
Keeping his slowed pace and looking down at the little foxfire every now and then, the black dog noted the tail curled and tongue sticking out and wondered if Jove knew that his appearance made him look... cuddly? Perhaps he wasn't aware of it himself and perhaps he was. But the black dog knew that if he didn't want to be treated like a pet, he was going to toughen up his appearance. But how could he do that without hurting the other boil's feelings..?
Ah hah!
"Hey Jove! Have ever tried, I dunno'... growling and snapping, or playing games of chase?" He asked curiously. Not that he was doubting the little guy's ferocity. If anything, even the smallest of creatures could look fierce if they really wanted to and he had no doubts that Jove could look pretty ferocious. "Back where I come from, the other younger black dogs and I would play games of chase and stuff. It's really fun you should try it some time!" It could also just be that the black dog wanted another canine buddy to play chase with.

Jove glanced up at Tybalt as he trotted along, ears perked, innocent eyes wide, and that little tongue poking out.
Growling and snapping? The pup's tongue disappeared and his ears flattened back as he remembered the last time he had done that... It was when he had gotten lost in the woods in the rain, and Ren had come to get him. But Jove had been half out of his mind with fright and bit his brother with his sharp little teeth. A good pup wasn't supposed to bite his friends.
And chase could be a game? Jove had been chased, and it was never a game. It was terrifying. His expression cowered a little further. Black dogs did that sort of thing for fun? Would Tybalt want to chase him now?
The poor pup hadn't had the opportunity to grow up playing with others his own age, and wrestling and roughhousing like any normal puppy was not something he knew how to do. It might not even have occurred to him that he could play physically like that. His idea of a game involved Ren's TV and a controller.

Tybalt quickly took notice of the foxfire's obvious fear. Had he had a bad experience before this? He looked rather startled...
"Ummm... chase, as in tag." He tried to assure the other boil. The last thing he wanted was to frighten him away. Especially considering he had only just met the little guy. "It's not really a scary sport. Really. You have one person who's 'it' and the others have to run and avoid being caught. The one who's 'it' simply has to touch someone else and whoever they touch then becomes 'it.' No harm whatsoever." He nodded. "Unless of course you want to play a rough version of it." He snorted, which almost sounded like laughter. He and the other black dogs he used to play with always played the rough version.

Tybalt didn't seem too worried about being chased, that much was clear to the little pup. He couldn't understand why others would want to play a game where they had to run away on purpose, the last time he had been chased in a playful manner he had panicked and completely freaked out. He was not going to repeat that if he could help it.
Chasing someone else didn't sound so bad. But then if he ever caught anyone...
Jove gulped, but it wasn't the thought of playing roughly that bothered him. Perhaps it could be fun, maybe if he knew it was just a game he wouldn't get scared when someone chased him. Maybe being 'tagged' wouldn't be so frightening. Because it was a game. Or, at least it should be a game.

At this point the black dog wasn't sure what to do. Jove seemed really scared. But was tag really that scary a thought to the little wisp? He wasn't sure, but he wanted to try and show him that it wasn't scary at all. In fact, quite the opposite! Not to mention it helped them hone their hunting skills. Now, he wasn't sure if foxfires were hunters or not, but it couldn't hurt to learn these particular skills. After all, in a school like this, they would probably need to learn many new things to get themselves out a pinch now and then.
"There's really no harm in tag." He assured him once again; raising his heavy paw and lightly placing atop Jove's head. "See? No harm whatsoever. Didn't even hurt right?" He asked with a wag of his tail; lips curling back into a wide toothy grin. A grin that would look more vicious than friendly to anyone who didn't know Tybalt very well.

Jove cowered as the giant paw hovered over him, his ears flattening down and his head ducking, until it rested on top of his fluff with no ill effects. Then the ears perked back up as high as they could go. No, it didn't hurt. Tybalt could have stomped him flat, but he was being gentle. Was Tag supposed to be a gentle game of chase?
The pup briefly pictured a pack of black dogs frolicking peacefully and pleasantly in a wide green field, but something about the mental image didn't seem right. His ears fell once more. It still came down to him being terrified of being chased. Maybe... Maybe Tybalt could just play Scario Kart with him instead sometime? Being chased in the game wasn't so scary. It was like Ren had explained to him, being chased meant you were winning.
