User ImageNightmare-of-Roses sat stiffly on top of a fallen log. The log itself was rotting in a few places towards either end, but in the center, moss still grew and it provided a decently comfortable spot to rest on. Better than the mud and dirt below...

User ImageHer owlcat, Thornprick, was curled up by her side, making soft trilling noises in her sleep. Rose's lip curled in a sort of smile as she looked at her owlcat. The creature seemed to innocent and friendly in her sleep. So different from the short-tempered, screeching beast she was when she awoke. Well, she was kind to her master, Rose, but not anyone else foolish enough to think they could get near and pet her.

Rose chuckled to herself at the thought of Thornprick clawing another kimeti's face. Hopefully a foolish male. Her tail swished from side to side, swatting away the troublesome mosquitoes. She caught a whiff of another presence. Her ears flicked in the same direction but her head did not turn, her eyes peering to their side.

It was a humid day, and Grasswhistle hummed softly as he swished his tail about, trying to fan himself down from the slowly growing sweltering heat. He longed to find a small stream for a cool drink, but it didn't look like he would come across one for a while.

He smiled as he felt a soft breeze, and closed his eyes to enjoy the brief sensation of coolness down his neck and back. His eyes flew open as he heard a snap, and looked beneath his hoof to see that he had stepped on a twig. His ears twitched as he thought he heard movement in response to the sound, and curiously stepped towards the source of it.

The curious expression changed to one of surprise as he stared at a crimson-haired doe, seated on a mossy log. He opened his mouth to greet her, but closed it as soon as he saw the slumbering owlcat beside her.

He only stood and stared, wondering what he should do.

Rose's ears flicked at the sound of the snapping twig. Her eyes darted towards the sound and she glared at the buck that came into view. She felt Thornprick stirring in her sleep, but it seemed that the owlcat did not wake. Lucky for the buck. Eyeing him carefully, she waited to see what he wanted before risking speech in case the volume wakes her owlcat. Even if it was Rose who woke her, Thornprick was very. very. cranky when woken early from a nap.

So for now, she continued to glare at him, forcing herself not to sneer.

Normally, the silence helped calm and relax him, but he seemed to tense up as each second passed by. He had no idea how long they had been staring at each other, and could somehow feel the female stare at him with contempt. He didn't blame her though. How awfully rude of him to just stand and stare. That was no way to treat a lady! But... he didn't want to wake up the owlcat, which he assumed was her pet. It seemed it would be wise not to, as the doe seemed to not want to risk the same thing. But he couldn't just stand here forever and WAIT for it to wake up... or just walk off without at least a greeting.

What to do, what to do...

His eyes widened as he came up with an idea, and he turned around to retrieve part of the broken twig he stepped on. Stepping as lightly as possible, he slowly made his way over to the doe, and slowly scratched out something on the dirt, as softly and carefully as he could manage.

As soon as he was finished, he nodded his head towards her, and placed the twig down, slowly nudging it towards her with his nose. It wasn't... what he had in mind as an introduction, but it would have to do for now.

Nightmare-of-Roses glanced down at the scrawl in the mud. Well..at least he had manners enough for introductions. With a barely audible 'hmph', the doe carefully slid off the log. Thornprick only stirred slightly, one eye opening just a sliver before sliding back shut.

Walking over towards the buck, she picked up the twig, her eyes never straying from his until she looked down to etch her name next to his.

Her furrowed eyes meeting his again, she still held the twig in her mouth, muttering a simple, "What do you want..." in a low voice. She trailed off at the last word, looking down at his name once more, "....Leaf...thing.."

He blinked as the female continued staring at him, wondering if he was doing something wrong. Her sudden movement startled him slightly, and he only watched silently as she kept her gaze locked on him as she bent down to pick up the twig, only turning away when she started drawing. He looked down as he watched her write her name next to his.

When she was done, he was still staring at it when he heard her voice, sounding low and menacing. However, at being called a leaf-thing, he only laughed softly, hoping that the volume wouldn't wake up the owlcat.

"My name is Grasswhistle," he smiled, replying as softly as possible, yet hopefully still audible. "And I didn't mean to intrude. I was only passing by, um..."

He took a quick glance down to see what she had written, but to him, it only looked like a swirl of wind. Windswirl? Something told him that wasn't her name, and this method of communication, while seeming efficient at first, was proving more complication then he thought.

"I, um, don't suppose I could have your name?"

If there was anything worse than an improper introduction for a lady, it would be getting her name wrong. He wasn't planning on screwing up more than he already had.

Nightmare's piercing gaze only slightly softened at the sound of the buck's laughter. She took it Leaf Thing wasn't actually his name. What a shame. She would have had -such- fun teasing him about it. Grasswhistle? How dreadfully -normal-. The doe made an exaggerated sigh as he explained himself. It was mostly a meaningless sigh, implying she was bored of him. When he asked for her name, she glanced down at her drawing. It wasn't obvious? Perhaps this buck was dumber than she thought...But, she must be patient with males, as unintelligent as they were. But she might as well have fun at the same time right?

Tilting her head while still holding his eye contact, she asked, "I don't know, can you?" While giving a coy smirk, she began to pace a close circle around the buck, demanding his attention with her sharp gaze.

Thornprick only slightly stirred at the muffled sound of voices but she did not wake for the moment.

((i love how she doesn't even -THINK- about how she should be "stupid" too for not getting his name.
plus. Rose is trollin.))

Grasswhistle gulped, and glanced down at the drawing once again. Dare he attempt to say it and get it wrong, or swallow his pride and try asking again?

He squinted, trying to make something out of the drawing, but the more and more he stared at it, the more he had an urge to say "Whoosh". He was pretty sure he'd get more than a lashing at if he said that.

Deciding it was best to just try asking again, he swallowed nervously, and tried to look the doe in the eye, which only made him more antsy. Why... why was she glaring at him like that.

"May... may I have your name?" he asked, voice slightly shaky. Despite how much he wanted to look away, he dared not.

Holding his gaze, Nightmare stopped circling the buck and stood stone still for what seemed like ages, though only a few seconds.

"Nightmare-of-Roses" she said, finally, deciding keeping her name from him became a boring thing. Slowly and carefully, she knelt to the ground before leaning gently to one side to roll the owlcat off her back. Thornprick tumbled to the floor, but only twitched a paw, having fallen back into a deep sleep. The doe nudged her owlcat's tail to tuck it closer to its body before looking back up to Grasswhistle, as if just remembering his presence.

"What do Owlcats dream of?" she asked in a hushed voice, out of the blue.

He only licked his lips nervously, feeling his throat dry as she seemed to stare at him for ages. W-what had he done wrong? Was there something on his lips? Did he have bad breath? Did-

Her voice finally broke the silence, and Whistle could almost feel a bead of sweat roll down his neck. He hadn't ever met a doe that made him feel at such unrest...

"N-nightmare of Roses..." he repeated. Even the name sounded terrifying.

He watched her quietly as she knelt down, still carrying the owlcat on her back. Terrifying as she might be, it seemed she still had a gentle side to her, as she was careful not to wake the owlcat. That was... until he watched her roll her off, albeit gently. The action startled him, and he only blinked curiously, wondering what she was doing, until her question startled him.

"D-dream?" he... actually wasn't quite sure. "I'm, actually not quite sure, seeing as I'm not one," he replied, laughing nervously. He hoped the joke would somewhat lighten the mood. Or, possibly in the worst case scenario, make him look like a fool.

Nightmare bent down to sniff the shoulder of her finicky companion. Truly, she did have a gently side. Like the velvet petals of a rose. But it was one that was more often observed, than experienced. Her ears flicked towards the buck at his response. Was he so daft?

"Surely" she started, "You can guess?" she finished, with an incredulous tone. She moved away from her owlcat, growing tired of whispering. If the buck had half a brain, he'd folllow her. After putting enough distance between them to soften their voices while still being able to see her owlcat, the doe looked back at the buck and added, "Have you no imagination?" with a raised brow and what one could say was a soft chuckle.

Her response startled him slightly, and he only watched as she began to walk away. He began to follow, having a feeling she was going to chastise him more for his feeble reply.

When they were a sizable distance away, Roses's second response only made Whistle arch an eyebrow. Was she really that curious to know?

"Well... I guess if I were an owlcat, I'd be dreaming of catching fish... or hunting some rodents down..." he grinned. "Though I guess it'd be best to ask your owlcat that if you want an honest answer."

Nightmare grinned at the buck. "Unfortunately, owlcats aren't so blessed by the Motherfather as to be able to speak to us." she said, glancing at her pet. "But do you want to know what -I- think she dreams of?" she said, grinning again as she turned back to stare at the buck with wide eyes.

"I think she dreams of ripping out the throats of little intrusions such as yourself." she said, her voice even and unwavering. She tilted her head, her red-river hair swaying gently. "But that's just my opinion. She could be thinking of sunshine and butterflies for all I know." she shrugged, moving closer to the buck. Did she frighten him, she wondered. A mischievous smile played on her lips as she closed the distance between him. Did he think her dangerous? She mused the thought. This was becoming fun.

Grasswhistle chuckled nervously as he glanced once more at the sleeping owlcat. He wasn't sure if he should ask what she thought, but it seemed she would of answered even if he did.

"I-is that so..." he laughed sheepishly "I guess you'd know her best, being her owner and all..." But part of him really did hope it was about butterflies and sunshine. He wasn't sure how well he'd fare about a grumpy hissy owlcat. The doe was scary enough as is.

He flinched slightly as she seemed to move closer, and took a step back. He... didn't want to insult her, but... he wasn't sure if it was a wise idea to be... too upfront.

"S-so... what were you doing this fine day...?" he stuttered, hoping he could lighten the mood... or at least, somewhat take her focus off him.
