Who: Vyn and Delia.
When: Mid-afternoon.
Where: Gambino highstreet.
Weather: A pleasant, slightly overcast, mild day.

Vyn had been surprised when she had turned up to the pet shop and had not been met with the usual cheerful wave of the spotted teenage lad at the back of the store, or the noisy chattering of birds sunning themselves outside the shop in display cages, or the “aww” inducing kittens in their usual place in the shop window... Instead the place was deserted. The colourful flash of feathers were absent, the musty yet somewhat comforting scent of animal bedding and food was gone, and the interior of the shop was stripped bare with not a living soul in sight. The empty tanks and cages were truly saddening and the rose’s lips curved downwards as she read the notice plastered on the window:

We apologise to inform you that due to financial troubles we have had to close.
If you were in the process of purchasing a pet from us please ring.
01234 567 890.
Thank you for your patronage whilst we were open.

What would she do? She had been using this place as a supply for Thorn’s food ever since she had taken responsibility for it... Although their conversations were primarily limited to speaking about Thorn she had enjoyed the warmth and genuine friendliness of all the staff. There was the other pet shop just around the block... But the guy on the till who usually served her had implied that they weren’t as nice to their animals there. Vyn thought about it. It was entirely possible that they had just badmouthed the other place because they were the competition, yet still she had like this place and now that it had shut down it felt a little like a stab in the back to go to the alternative shop.

Never the less, Thorn needed his food and there was little else that the shadowy femme could do. She would buy this week’s food provisions from there and then seek out an alternative.

Thus, a little dampened she floated the short distance to the other pet store. On first impression it seemed exactly the same as her usual store but with a newer coat of grass green paint framing the windows... Hovering at the entrance she rested her hand on the door. Her store always had the entranceway open, welcoming people in regardless of the weather outside... However, with a flex of her leathery wings she put her prejudices aside and went inside – her entrance announced by the tinkling of a bell.

"Errr ugh! Why do I have to be the one to pick up stuff for that stupid little water mutt?! I don't even like the thing!" Cordelia complained loudly as she floated her way to the pet store. Well a pet store. Ebby had wanted her to go to that uppity one on the far side of downtown Gambino, but seeing as that one was much much further than she'd like to travel for said stupid mutt, Delia figured the British woman wouldn't know the difference. As if she really cared though. That foxfish that Ebony had been so fond of since Laz dropped it off way back when could bake out in the sun for all she cared.

With a sigh she entered the first pet shop she came across, the little bell tinkling to announce her arrival, a noise that only seemed to aid in furthering Delia's sour disposition. The last thing she needed was someone running to her now and asking all kinds of questions of what her pet was and blah blah blah. Not like they'd believe her if she told them what he was right? Well guess they might seeing of whom it was that was telling them.

She was grateful when no one did indeed come running to greet her and thus was left to her assignment. Another deep sigh escaped Cordelia as she viewed the list her guardian had supplied her with. Protein enriched dehydrated fish? Seriously? Didn't Ebby fill that pond out back with live fish for the damn thing already? Why'd it need fancy packaged stuff?!

Vyn was going to make certain that the animals here were well kept and happy. She needed Thorn’s food, yes, but equally so she thought it was important that her money didn’t go to someone who was unkind to the creatures in their care. It was for that reason that she was hovering around the doorway, looking intently at hamsters bundles up in their cardboard tubes inside the glass display cabinets and the tame rates, dancing around across little plastic bridges and weaving through tunnel systems between the enclosures, rather than heading straight away to the dog food section. They looked happy... In fact, the display cages that they were kept in looked decidedly more entertaining than those at Vyn’s old shop. There, they hadn’t had much beyond clean bedding, food and occasionally a plastic wheel (well oiled to avoid squeaking). Here they had all sorts of enriching items.. Even if it did make the displays slightly cluttered.

Wanting to investigate the matter further Vyn flicked her wings and her rune carried her a little higher, the glow cast from it flaring momentarily. She turned back to the doorway so that she could cross the entrance to the shop and look at the cages on the other side – housing an array of brightly coloured birds – but was stopped in her tracks when she was confronted by another raevan, one whom she recognised but did not know on an intimate level; Cordelia, the smoky girl whom she had seen in a bottle at Ebony’s side oh so long ago. She was a mute – if the rose remembered correctly – and had always provided pleasant company.

She raised a hand a gave the other girl a friendly smile.

Hello, how are you?” She brushed a few wine red strands of hair from her eyes in an attempt to make herself more presentable – she had practically done nothing to her appearance as she hadn’t been expecting to meet anyone, consequently her hair had been allowed to follow it’s unruly style more than usual and the rose didn’t want the handsome girl to think she paid no attention to keeping up appearances.

"Have you got a pet?"

Cordelia had been busy rolling her eyes at every single item on her guardian's list when a sweet and lulling voice addressed her then. A frown was ready on her face for the person daring to attempt conversation with her then. That was until she saw of whom it was. Floating there, pushing back a stray hair, was one of the most lovely female Raevans she'd ever did see. Though delicate in appearance, her strangely colored eyes gave light to an inner strength not physically seen.

The basilisk's frown instantly turned right side up, giving the rose a most delighted smile. "Hey! I know you! You're uhh..." Delia tilted her head slightly to the side as a finger tapped her chin, mentally trying to summon the girl's name to mind. It'd been so long after all.

As if a bolt of lightning had hit the smokey girl, Cordelia finally blurted out the Frei's name excitedly. "Vyn! Your name's Vyn!" Quickly she covered her mouth and became embarrassed by her outburst. More quietly she replied, "Opps, sorry. Um, I'm well. How are you?" She purposely ignored the pet question for obvious reasons.

"Yes.. I'm Vyn. You're Cordelia, am I right?" She gave the other girl a smile, genuinely pleased that the other raevan remembered her. She had been out of the loop for such a long time, carign for Ethan and generally being busy that socialising (something which had never really been her forte anyway) had been put well and truly on the backburner. She hadn't even spoken to some of her closest raevan companions, although she had thought of them often. "I'm well thank you. I've not seen any others for a long time... My guardian was..." How best to describe it? Ill wasn't fully truthful, but at the same time, her guardian's suspicions that there had been something more than a little suspicious about his stretch in hospital wasn't something you were meant to share when you bumped into an acquaintance like this. "In hospital for a while and I had to look after him and myself."

She stretched her wings and craned her body backwards a little, delicately easing out and ache. "And Thorn of course - my little dog. That's why I'm here." Her rune glowed a little as she floated towards the canned food section of the store. She was sure Cordelia wouldn't mind following her as she just had a look at what was on offer. "I need to get him some food." Hopefully they would stock the same brand as her previous shop... If not, she would have to remember the type of food Zeke had suggested was best for Thorn's health. He was no longer slightly over-weight, but it was best to give him stuff that kept him that way.

"Is there any reason you're here?" The rose had noted that her previous enquiry had gone un-answered. She didn't want to be rude and if the other girl didn't respond again she wouldn't push it. She presumed that paired with the smokey essence Cordelia was made from something exotic... The tiny grey scales around her eyes and the ribbed almost snake-skin like jacket suggested a distinct reptilian theme. Perhaps Cordelia had to feed like a snake or lizard? That would make sense. After all, there was a whole section of the shop in which snakes basked behind glass under sunlamps, with tiny naked baby mice waiting to be devoured in their cages, and lizards scuttled around chasing locusts. Such eating habits were not the most pleasant or ladylike to admit to.

Thrilled at being remembered as well, Cordelia smiled grandly, nodding her head vehemently. "Yes! Yes that's right. Though you can just call me Delia if you like." Most opposite to her guardian's obsession with proper usage of name and whatnot, the basilisk did not like being so formal with those she held as friends.

At the mention of Ethan's hospitalization the girl's silver eyes grew wide as her dark mouth ghosted a concerned gasp. She remembered now that the Rose's guardian was not as young or as durable as her own or perhaps any of the other Raevans' guardians that she'd meet up to this point. But he was pleasant and warm all the same and hearing that such a thing had happened to the elder gent was enough to draw Delia's worry and sympathy. "I'm so sorry to hear that Vyn. I do hope he's doing better now. Though if you're taking care of him, I'm sure he is." Cordelia flashed an encouraging smile as she followed the older Frei down the aisles.

The smile was soon replaced with a frown as the question was posed to her yet again. The smokey girl huffed and pouted at the reminder. Guess there was no getting out of it, besides she did have things she needed to get otherwise Ebony wouldn't be too happy with her. With the most unenthused infliction in her wispy voice, "Ebby sent me. She's got one of those water mutts from the lab and wanted me to get some things for it." Just the thought of Poseidon and all the happy splashing he did made her cringe.

At the mention of the 'water mutt' Vyn's eyes lit up and a smile played across her face. She recalled such a thing in the summer on Gambino beach, swimming contently in the paddling pool before the massive storm had come along and ruined the general atmosphere of the day. It had been accompanied with a less adorable, but still cute, cat octopus hybrid. Gage had been the proud owner of one of the 'water mutts' and she had a soft spot for them. However, it was clear in the other raevan's tone of voice that Cordelia did not share the same level of affection for the exuberant little creatures. Never the less, Vyn hoped that the other wouldn't mind talking about the interesting pet a little more.

"What do you need for it?" She inquired, running her fingers along the shelves stacked with various different dog foods. There was dry varieties, wet varieties, some packed in bags, others in cans, all manner of happy canine faces barking out of the promotional packaging. She couldn't spot the exact type of food that she fed Thorn, but there was other variations of the same brand and a multitude of other brands with foods that sounded remarkably similar to what she was used to - each claiming that they were more nutritious, healthy and generally better value than their neighbour. It was enough to make her brain ache in her skull. Moving out of the ease of a well know routine was mind boggling at times.

"Does it eat regular fish food?" She glanced at Delia, a can in each hand - comparing the advertising spiel on each. "Ethan has a lot of marine life... But nothing like the foxfish..." She paused, deciding that neither of the cans were suitable, thus placing them carefully back. "Does he have a name?"

Still pouting a bit, Cordelia took another look at the list her guardian had given her. "Um, well, looks like she wrote down some specialty foods...vitamins...and uh, a couple of toys..." The snake's face deadpanned after summarizing the items. Toys? Honestly Ebby was spoiling that overgrown sea otter and for what? Not like it really did anything but eat, sleep and be a splashing menace all day.

'Well best to get things over with as soon as possible,' Delia thought as she quickly grabbed up a nearby shopping basket. Then maybe her and Vyn could go do something much more fun and interesting. Hell she'd be happy even to go see the shadow girl's guardian and dog. In fact the smokey Frei began to ponder what the rose's place was like. She was about to ask when the other mentioned that the elder gent had lots of marine life. This stopped Cordelia momentarily as she imagined a place filled with walls made of glass and water like a public aquarium. The thought of being surround by that much water made her shiver physically and she shook her head to quickly clear the thought as soon as it had appeared in her mind.

"No. Poseidon's more mammal than actual fish, so the lab said to feed him smaller fish and other marine creatures." Actually knowing this much about the foxfish sort of annoyed Delia thus she decided to move the conversation in another direction. As she casually looked at a few items, some she put back, others she placed in her basket as she floated down the aisles, "What kind of dog is Thorn anyway? Whatever he is, I bet he's adorable."
