AMITYVILLE ACADEMY ENROLMENT FORM

Name: Rochester England Scythe (Rochester E. Scythe works, too)
Nicknames: Roch
Gender: Male
Age: 15

Faction/Race Reapers - Grim

Personality: He would be rebelling, if anyone gave a candlejack about what he did in the first place. His father’s a workaholic who barely seems to realize that Roch is alive, his mother was a demon of gluttony who walked out once the booze was gone. Roch was five at the time, but he still remembers it. It left a big impression on him. Side note: he has a problem with gluttony, himself. He eats a TON (or would, but his dad never gives him enough money) but never gets fat.

He’s rough, cocky, cracks jokes easily, and is hard to get to really know because he's never going to see things the way you do. His background shows up at strange moments, and what you might think is appalling (You just BEAT that cannon cat to death, and you're smiling??) he thinks is perfectly normal. There's usually a reason behind these things, but he only half explains, or doesn't explain at all. And he finds them far more enjoyable and entertaining than he should.

The only thing he seems serious about is his reaping lessons. This actually pisses him off, that he’s good at it. The last thing he wants is to be like his old man, but when he’s got his ax in his hands, (and some more training,) he’s good. Seriously good.

With ghouls a part of him will never trust them, thanks to his mom. He tends to be more tight-lipped around the ghouls he thinks are hot, and he can fumble things if he’s not paying attention, awkward teenager hormones and all that<3 He wants to look cool in front of them, and winds up coming off as an a** half of the time, or anti-social. (Note, Roch tends to think the really predatory girls are the hottest. But he has no clue what to do with them. Cute girls are okay, just as long as they're not trying to climb in his pants. He doesn't... well... really see them as sex objects.)

With boils he tends to be more comfortable, cracking crass jokes and trying cighoulettes behind the school building. He’s as likely to go to a creep-show as the next boil, moreso if they’re going with him! He never really talks about himself, though, and people might find it frustrating if they want to become closer friends with him, male or female.

But it's easiest to talk to him A) when you've talked to him online already, B) when there's food involved or C) when he's got his guitar. Or all the above.

He hates ghosts with a passion. He avoids them like the plague unless he has no choice, or they piss him off. Then it’s war! When he was a kid of about eight, he made friends with two ghost boils in the neighborhood (he lives in the ghetto of Halloweentown) and they were playing when the ghosts led him to a dried out well, shoved him in, and covered the hole. They’d seen it in a movie and thought it’d be fun-__- He was stuck there in the wet, cold darkness for over an hour, waiting for his pals to come back. They never did. His dad didn’t come to save him, either, not that he expected the old man to. He started trying to climb up out of the well, but the rocks were slippery with slime and other disgusting things he couldn’t see. Fear turned to rage, and for the first time he summoned his weapon.

The truth is, he's scared of ghosts. He tries to cover it up with anger, but it just winds up with people hurt, himself included.

The easiest way to catch him off guard is to be genuinely kind to him. He doesn’t expect it, and he’s extremely vulnerable to unexpected kindness and love. He tends to avoid people that are like that, childishly not wanting to deal with emotions he’s not accustomed to, or another betrayal. He’s terrified of being betrayed again, after what his mother did to him. He’s got the cutest expression when he’s vulnerable, his silver eyes get big, and he finally looks like the fifteen year old kid he is. (Fangirling here, leave me be=P) Problem with that? He is seriously drawn to food. That usually comes with cute little ghouls who are baking, and it smells so good-- Poor, poor, fumbling Roch.

He’s got musical hobbies for the most part. He loves karaoke, but always does it on his own. He’s got this raspy, rough voice that’s as likely to win him a prize as it is to get him kicked out, depending on what he sings. He plays the guitar. Actually, he plays his scythe, which is a working guitar. The sounds that it produces are strange and eerie, and some of the chords have special effects when he channels his FEAR through them. He REALLY wants to be in a band. A punk band. He would go to all sorts of lengths to be in one, even things he would never normally do.

There’s a lot that his father hasn’t explained to him just yet. Roch comes from a VERY well known line, one that started even before Skeleton Jack. He would have been elite, had one of his ancestors not been a seriously bad gambler with an addiction. So Roch is now living in the ghetto, eating when his dad remembers to send home enough money (or go shopping those rare times he’s home), and going to school because there he’d get three meals a day, regardless of how bad the meals are.

Only the older generations might even realize what his name means. In his family it’s expected of the fathers to name their sons after the place in the human world where they did their greatest job. His father’s name is Austin Texas Scythe. His grandfather was Las Vegas Nevada Scythe. (Guess who lost the family fortune?)

Why did they enroll at the academy? He--no, he doesn’t WANT to be a reaper, he just HAS to be. He feels stifled and he wants to get away from his jackdamn father! Not that the old geezer is ever around, but he definitely wants out of that house. He’s got a scythe. He wants to use it. He wants to become something more than just a punk with a guitar. And part of him, a tiny part of him, wants to shove his job as a real reaper in his father’s face and tell him that he made it all on his own. That he’s as good as he is. He really wants... well... he wants the old man to be proud of him for something he’s done in his life, even though he knows that’s a pathetic, retarded goal. It’s the one that comes to him in the middle of the night while his stomach is grumbling (His old man forgot to send home enough food money again, seriously, is it that hard to fill two fridges?) and he’s staring up at the leaking ceiling of their crappy two bedroom house, wishing he could sleep.

He'll wind up starting the "Fright Music Club"

Secret facts:
~ If you lure him with lots of food you can get him to do practically anything. He might not LIKE doing it, but he’ll do it!
~Roch needs to grow up. I figure this'll happen through rp, whether he likes it or not.
~ His guitar doesn't need an amp. It seems to have a built in one. But he should be able to summon one when he's got some more learning under his belt, and he'll really be able to rock a building. Or a city block, even.

Fear: Killer Chords
A sound based attack where he directs FEAR through certain chords and it affects the enemy for one round. He’s got a few different chords, and will gain more as he gets older. To start with, though, he’s only got two (that he can use his FEAR with, he can play pretty good outside of battle), and their effects are pretty pathetic. And they’re hit and miss, even then.

(This is only slightly related to his regular playing. Using FEAR and playing the guitar is like playing two different instruments at the same time. It's exhausting, difficult to accomplish, and awkward, especially at first.)

In year one he'll start out with one chord he can use and learn a second pretty quicky:
A minor causes minor dizziness, B minor causes minor nausea. And sometimes he botches the chord entirely, fingers slipping, etc, and winds up just hurting their ears (and his own.)

In year two he'll add another minor chord and a major, and learn how to play them better, and so on until he graduates. And it's the major chords that have the real power, the minor ones are actually pretty weak sweatdrop He'll be working up to those.

He'll probably finish with 6 - 8 chords in all, half minor, half major. (Yeah, I know it's a lot, but I'm pretty sure I can remember them! Or have a chart. And of course this is all up to rp, and will probably be changed slightly as I go<3)

Completely useless for fighting use of FEAR that he has: he can switch his guitar back and forth from an electric style guitar to an electric style bass guitar. It has no source of energy (since it's FEAR) but it sounds like its electric!

Natural ability:
• Sense Soul: A Grim Reaper has the ability to pin-point exactly when a soul ready to be reaped is. While in Halloweentown, this ability merely lets them pinpoint the exact location of ghosts -- there are no souls to be reaped in Halloweentown.

(He doesn’t quite realize what’s happening with this at first, btw, and he never focuses it properly until after he’s been trained.)

Roch’s Room
At the moment it’s freakin’ bare. He doesn’t have many clothes, he doesn’t have many pets, he, well, doesn’t have much of anything, really, except for his bed. Right after he gets there, he's going to be sent his bed from home by the guys back in the old neighborhood. It's a double papasan chair made out of fancy wrought iron (which used to be someone's front gate) and a patched together pillow of mostly black material and a few hearts here and there. (Old Mrs. Wheedle really loves him, this one's new! Well, parts of it, at least.) There's a soft black and purple blanket tossed to the end of the bed, and usually being used by one of his few pets.

The only other things of worth in the room CAME with the room, a desk, a skelevision, and a dresser that’s empty. His clothing is still in a ratty bag sitting behind the door. A rock sits in the corner of the room, cut smooth, as if by a blade. Once in a while (a LONG while) a letter will come through the post. There’s a small stack of them, ripped open, but left unread. Only the cash has been taken. There’s one poster on the wall, of a band called “Rancid.”

The bathroom has the most stuff. There’s gel and hair-dye kits. One of them is even for black dye, but it’s not opened. Toothbrush, toothpaste, a hairbrush, a comb, all sorts of self grooming tools. He loves his hair. At the same time, he hates the blonde part, since he looks like his dad when it isn’t dyed purple. This is the stuff he splurged on first when getting to school.

Bass here is insane. He likes to drape himself over Roch’s head, and often forgets that Roch can’t see though his wings-__- He loves music, and dances whenever he likes a particular song, or at least Roch calls it dancing. It’s a twitchy, sporadic flight with happy little chirps inserted.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. This guy is stalking Roch. He actually followed him all the way from the old neighborhood and it freaks Roch out. Roch keeps finding the little guy curled up on his bed, or on his favorite pants, or in even more awkward places that Roch doesn’t want to mention. He thinks his name is Jackdammit! With the exclamation point. He's got a mean streak, too, and if you see Roch looking like he lost a war first thing in the morning, it's probably JD's fault.

Roch is trying to lure Acoustic here into being his best friend. So far Cou only sees him as a living radio, though.
--------------------
Jacked-up Goodbye (Self prompt to test him out<3)

“You really think you can do this?”

The question made Roch go still, his hand stopping in the middle of putting his shirt in his bag. He didn’t have much. All of it fit on his strange couch like bed, with room to spare. He turned, glancing at his old man for a moment before turning back to packing. “I can do it.”

“You get tossed out--“

“I get it. I get tossed out I can’t come back here,” Roch said. “I don’t care. Who wants to come back to this hellhole?”

“I never said that. What the jack is it with you and putting words in my mouth?” Austin demanded.

“Well somebody has to,” Roch said, finishing his packing and zipping the bag angrily. He turned, glaring at his dad. “I’m not going to get kicked out. This was my decision, jackdammit, and I’m going to do it, no matter what you say. How come you’re here, anyway? Don’t you have a job to do?”

“I passed on it when I got a jackin’ call from the school saying you were accepted!” Austin snapped. “I didn’t even know you’d been submitted. Do you know how stupid that made me look? Candlejack, Rochester!”

“So that’s the problem, not that I’m going, but that you had no clue and wound up looking like an idiot,” Roch said with malicious satisfaction. “Good!”

“When did you become such a jackass?” Austin demanded irritably. “You used to be such a cute kid--“

“Maybe it was when Ma walked out on us, or maybe--“ Roch said, baring his teeth, “it was when you came back almost three months afterwards.”

“No one told me she’d skipped out!” Austin bellowed.

“What, you expect your five year old kid to know how to call you? And what would I have said? ‘Pop, Ma ran out of booze so I need you to come home’?”

“You could have told someone! They would have called!”

“Yeah, well no one gave a jack.”

“Did you talk to them?”

“What the hell was I supposed to say? I was still waiting for her to come back when you walked through the door! And you were gone a week later! You know what? This is the last time I want to talk to you. I’m going to school. You won’t see me again,” he said, stopping in front of his taller, tougher looking father.

“When’d you pierce your lip?” Austin asked, not budging.

“When I was twelve,” Roch said with a vicious smirk. “Three jackin’ years ago. Want to know when I got the tatt?”

“You’ve got a tattoo?”

“Oh for Jack’s sake! No, but you know what? I’m going to go get one right now. Right across my forehead,” he said, shoving a finger at his forehead. “Now get out of the way, I’m going to miss my train.”

“You’d look like an idiot.”

“I was being sarcastic, so who’s the real idiot?” Roch drawled, shoving at his father. Austin stepped out of the way.

“I didn’t say I didn’t think you could do it,” Austin said a bit more calmly. “You’d be a damn good reaper.”

“How would you know? You don’t know anything about me.” He didn’t look back as he headed out the door, letting the tattered screen door slam close behind him.

Austin stood there, shoving his hands into his pockets and thinking back to the day at the well. Roch would be a very, very good reaper. It was the rest of the school that he worried about.

-------------

Side Notes!

A running plot idea:
Roch wants to compose a song that he will eventually (think post school) be able to play completely through using FEAR. It'll be called "Death's Lullaby" and will be extremely handy when reaping in the real world. Ironically without the FEAR it's going to be a sweet, eerie sounding song that's strangely soothing. But with the FEAR it will be powerful enough to reap an entire hospice of people who are ready to go. (And only those that are ready, he's a grim reaper, he doesn't kill *insert DEATH fangirl rant here, big Pratchett fan<33*)

Often he'll be found in the library, studying composition books and writing music. Possibly cursing at himself because it's difficult.

Another small side note:
The cross earrings and other little crosses you'll see/hear about him having -- he's not a Christian, but they suddenly started showing up. His dad seems to think it's a sign he'll specialize in reaping Christians, just like rosary beads showed up for him when he was a kid, and his dad's got a crescent moon with a star for an earring. It's got very little to do with religion, more of a "job calling."

I really like him!!

I also really like your little story about him leaving. I think he sounds like one of the most accurate depictions of a teenager, if you get what I am saying. XD

I really like his family's naming system and is it bad that I kind of like his s**t of a father? hahaha

No real criticism.. just wondering how quickly he will adapt to the fact that while in school there are ghosts EVERYWHERE. Also wondering how he would react if someone asked him about his past? Would he react badly if a friend or a ghoul really pushed to find out his history?

I find the contradictions of his personality to be really accurate to a teenager of that age (like not wanting to be seen as just a punk with a guitar, but at the same time REALLY WANTING to be a punk with a guitar! lol) and really endearing!

He's sounds like a bunch of ghouls will be into him. Kind of moody, sexy punk guy? PLAY ME A SOOONG *fangirl*

I LOVE his dad. Seriously. His dad's going to show up in all sorts of ways, much to his irritation. He actually really loves Roch, but he's super failtastic about showing it. The teachers are more likely to hear the whole "How's my kid? Is he still alive? Don't feed that little b*****d as much as he thinks he needs to eat--did he make any friends yet? He really sucks at making friends--" than Roch is.

Ghosts! I am going to toss him at ghosts as often as I can! He'll back up and try and find another route if they're OBVIOUS ghosts, but I can totally see him and Seiji becoming bff's before Roch (like an idiot) realizes that he's a ghost. There's going to be this huuuuge drama and "You betrayed me" and "WTF are you talkin' bout? You idiot!" and making up and stuff. Which might help him get over it. But until then I want to torment the heck out of him with as many ghosts as I can<33 He actually is a little afraid of them, but covers that fear with hatred.

As for prying his past from him, I can see him trying to brush it off, unless he's pissed. Then he'll just drop these bombs on people, like the whole well thing. But he'd have to trust them (even subconsciously) before he did that.

The contradictions. You just broke Roch's brain, pointing that out=P Yeah, he IS a punk with a guitar, he knows it, he likes it, but he feels like he's trying to fill some massive shoes (he secretly admires how good his dad is at the job) and he wants to be MORE than just a punk with a guitar. He wants to be a grim reaper punk with a guitar!

He's super failtastic around ghouls, though! It might work to their advantage, if they see it as being cool, not being an idiot. And he's not nearly as moody around boils. He's a goofball when he's happy! Which I haven't shown yet, cuz atm he's not really happy at all.

I love his personality. xD It just screams AWKWARD TEEN TRYING TO PROVE HIMSELF AND FIND HIS PLACE IN THE WORLD, which appeals to me and the RPer in me!

His hatred/fear of ghosts... Its pretty ironic, because (rumor has it) most ghosts are the result of a Grim Reaper blotching up when reaping a soul! 8D So his whole 'I DISLIKE GHOSTS' thing might cause ghosts to be wary of him, since from a Reaper's mouth, it almost sounds like he (as a future Grim Reaper) is avoiding that "responsibility".

As for his FEAR, its not really a crit as a suggestion; the battle system is under renovation, but it is very likely that you will not be the one to determine what sort of dice to use and it will most likely be standardized depending on the type of attack (for example, is it an offensive or defensive FEAR?) to make it fair for all players. Thus, it might be better to make the FEAR more general like... Maybe linking an effect to a cord?

Thus, rather than leaving it up to the other RPer, why not make it so that each chord he knows has a different effect? Perhaps in Year 1, he can cause his opponent to be dizzy by playing the D minor chord, and that's the only chord that works because he's pretty much a noob at it. As he studies, he'll learn how to cause different effects by playing different chords?

Right now, your FEAR looks fine, but "As he gets older he’ll have better luck at hitting a right chord with the right amount of FEAR" makes it sound like luck can be improved... When it can't. Its more of skills and other factors! That's what he's in school for. <3

I hope this helps! Honestly, I think his background and personality are awesome! I can't wait to play with you and your boy!

Isn't that what the whole punk movement was about, though? *Remembers her journey into punk with super fondness<33* I sat there listening to Rancid songs and a bit of My Chemical Romance for a long time as I tried to figure him out, I'm glad it seemed to have worked! *Loves how awkward he is, is sooo going to enjoy it*

He will just make sure NOT to botch his jobs, which, ah, probably isn't that much more reassuring to ghosts, now is it?

And I tweaked his FEAR, I hope this works better? FEAR is seriously my weakest point sweatdrop I always have a heck of a time figuring out how it should work. Thank you for giving me assistance with it!

Is it? xD I have no idea, but I do like where you're going with him!

Ohh, I like the minor/major chords idea! To keep yourself from being swamped with 100 chords to remember, perhaps (keeping with your current line of thought) minor chords = minor effects of the major chords?

So A minor = minor dizziness, A major = dizziness? So by the end of his 3 years in school, he would have 3 minor and 3 major chords? Or why not, to simplify it further and allow room for IC improvements (since FEAR can change depending on IC experiences), have it so that he starts off with just 1 minor chord? In Year 2, he'll replace that minor chord with a major chord, and learn a new major chord. By Year 3, he should have 2-3 chords in total, all major ones. This will save you a ton of headache in my opinion. xD
PostPosted: Thu May 19, 2011 9:07 am

I like the minor/major thing, actually. 6 would be fine! *Is good at keeping track of things, especially if she writes them down* And it's just a matter of typing minor or major, which isn't that big of a deal<33

*Ponders this* I think I will have him start out with one minor, learn the major, then work from there<3 *Lied, realized this as she typed it up* He's going to catch onto playing quick, simply because he'll ALWAYS be practicing. Like when he's bumming, he'll play with his guitar, or when he's hanging out with friends, or any time he needs a distraction.

He'd be pretty easy to catch hanging out with Batzy and/or Jackdammit, playing with his guitar in strange places. That'll open up rp opportunities, too!

I think you should keep playing his guitar and using his FEAR as two separate things; for example, he might be AWESOME at playing his guitar out of battle, but in battle, no matter how awesomely he plays, only those certain chords have an effect because its part of his FEAR.

Outside of that, he can rock as hard as he wants. xD Does that make sense? Because FEAR =/= his ability to play an instrument.
PostPosted: Thu May 19, 2011 10:55 am

Something like, he'll know the chords, but not have a clue how much FEAR to channel into them? Because he can't do it all the time, people would beat on him once they figured it out! "You made me sick, jacktard! Those were brand new boots, too!"

I was actually thinking along those lines, otherwise he'd have to have a different guitar and that'd be a pain in the neck to carry around. *He's lazy and doesn't like carrying more than he has to*

Technically, a reaper's weapon can be summoned and desummoned so he doesn't have to carry it! 8D

How about, he'll know the chords but DON'T channel FEAR into them while playing? Because... You don't have to channel FEAR to play an instrument. Its his FEAR but he doesn't have an excuse to use it outside of battle/gym!
PostPosted: Thu May 19, 2011 11:13 am

Oh, he wouldn't, not just because he's not allowed. It takes up a LOT of energy, and using FEAR and playing the guitar at the same time is like playing two different instruments at once. If you don't gotta do it, you aren't going to. It's hard, unrewarding, and people getting sick (while entertaining to some) doesn't make you many friends.
