"I told you, we'll say I'm not human because I'm not." Fox reminded her. "And what happened to no more questions, you apes and your attention span, its like trying to have a conversation with a-" he dropped the train of thought as he found a puddle of a strange viscous liquid and leapt over a row of seats to eye it.
"What's this then?" he muttered, flashign it with the sonic screwdriver. he looked at the side and found nothing. He moved a finger to touch it poking the liquid caused it to shimmer. He moved it up and watched the majority of the fluid fall straight bat to the ground creating a ripple. He licked his finger and then almost instantly spat back out. "that tasted like... hell I don't even know what that tasted like. I've never tasted anything like it."
He looked back over his shoulder to at Josie. "That's exactly what it looks like." He said, pulling a test tube from his pocket and scooping the fluid up into it. He pressed a cap onto the tube and re-pocketted it. "Someone or something has taken the senate, the begining of all democracy as we know it and twisted it into... into something else entirely."
Fox stood up and stepped back down the seating to stand with Josie. "Lets get a look at the new Senate." Fox offered, nodding back the way they'd come as he noticed a series of parchment posters on the pillars working their way down the streets. "As second dates go the gladiatorial Senate has to be a first for you, no?" he joked.

Josey crossed her arms and glared at him, "I'm not an ape!" She stormed over to stand opposite Fox where he crouched before the liquid. "You know, you're gonna have to work on this rude-thing of yours. It's gonna get you slapped."
She dropped her arms and her eyes went wide as Fox stuck a finger in the goo on the floor, "Are you sure it's a good idea to just touch something like that? What if it's acidic or something? What if it starts eating away at your-ugh! Don't eat it!" She grimaced again, turning a little green. "How have you lived so long if this is how you act?"
She shuddered as he stood and came over, starting off in the direction of the arena. "Well, there have been quite a lot of firsts on this "Date"" She said making air quotes between them. "So far I've been accused of being a spy, licked and called an ape, though, I s'pose I've been called worse..." She smirked and shook her head.
"This how you treat all your dates? You at least need to buy a girl dinner before you give her a lick."

"Don't have many dates, this body, this mind, never had a date, I don't know how I treat my dates, you're the first." he told her as they walked calmly down the street. sure something horrible had happened, but when had it not? it wasn't often that the damage was already so far gone that he could just walk to the problem at a leisurely pace.
"So how'm I living up to your expectations?" he asked. "A little bit, sort of brilliant, I know, but beyond that, is this anything like you'd expected?" They walked down the street, talking quietly as Fox took in the details of the posters as they past. they were for individual laws, battles to the death deciding if a law would go through.
What was happening here? how had they veered so far off course? It didn't make any sense, and what was the logo in the corner of every page? it looked like it was supposed to be a kings symbol, but Athens didn't have a king it was a Polis, a City State run by a Senate, or a gladiatorial arena aparently.
The symbol was strange, like an upside down backwards letter F, capitolised of course but looking nothing like it, in fact it looked like something he'd seen on Gallifrey, in a text about certain worlds filled with violence and rage. Strange.
They made their way to the entrance to the arena to be met with a man in armor and holding a spear. "Tickets?" the man asked. Fox pulled his psychic paper from his pocket and showed the man a ticket. "The Fox plus one, yes?" The time lord offered, flashing the plain paper at the guard. The guard moved his spear aside adn allowed them to pass into the Arena.

The girl rolled her eyes and kept pace with him as they walked, "Well, a little tip. Don't call your date an ape." She laughed softly, allowing herself to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
His question made her laugh again and she looked up at him, smiling. "I can honestly say, despite your name calling and weird habit of licking and eating random things...you've been brilliant so far. I didn't know what to expect..." She stopped smiling, stopped joking and looked back down at their feet as they walked, and then up at a pillar when she noticed a poster. She decided to study the posters while she spoke, take in some details and information while she talked.
"When you found me, I was on my way to find a bridge to sleep under or something. I'd been kicked out of my flat and my things had been taken to sell and pay off a debt..." She shrugged and stretched out a hand to touch the brush strokes that had made an image on parchment plastered to a wall.
"I'd spent my last three quid on a pint at the pub I'd just left." She stole a glance at him, then looked back the way they were walking. "When I decided to tag along with you, I figured the worst that could happen was I'd get killed by an alien. Not like I have any friends or family to leave behind."
She widened her eyes, glaring at her feet while she walked. Going with him had changed everything. It had been like a reset button for who she was. All the hardness, the anger, the distrust, she had left it out in that street after he saved her from that ambulance. She had gone with the mystery he offered and given herself a second chance. She had hated how angry and sad she always was...but there had never been a chance for her to change, nothing was ever different in her life. Bad luck had possessed her from the day of her birth and that wears a person down...
She shrugged and put her hand in her pocket, and held the strap of her bag with the other. "I never really wanted friends or anything, not in a long time. They never work out for me. I'm just too weird or too different for people, normally. It's why I was never adopted." She made her mouth go side ways in a sort of 'thats life' sort of expression.
"But right from the start I realized I was comfortable with you...I actually trusted you. Thats new for me. I don't trust people. Normally I hate people... Then I noticed you as you worked, and the things you said about being the last Tardis, and about your friend The Doctor was gone and I realized you're just as alone as me." She paused as they came up to the arena, there was a guard there.
"I guess the only expectation I had coming into this was first that I'd die and get an easy out from life, but then I found myself hoping we could be friends and maybe we'd both be a little less lonely..." Taking a deep breath, Josey let Fox get them into the arena, keeping her mouth shut while he dealt with the guard, and hoping she hadn't said too much to the madman, and hoping he wasn't like human men that ran from girls after hearing things like she had just shared.

It was a lot to take in, she had effectively poured her heart out to him as they walked down the street. It'd been twelve hours... twelve hours since they met and he hadn't yet given her time to sleep. He always forgot Companions needed sleep.
She spoke of being lonely, spoke of how he himself was lonely. He stayed quiet, right up until she stopped talking. It was hard for him. It hurt more because she was right. "We are friends." He promised her, as they stepped passed the guard and into the colluseum. "What?" he asked, frowning. from the outside it looked like a small building, but the colluseum was massive, it was built down, dug into the ground, not up into the air. there were enough seats for Athens entire population. The arena was massive, oval shaped with a raised area at one end for the leaders. Or Leader as it appeared. He looked down into the bowl, a fight was going on as he thought. two men fought, one wore red while the other was dressed in blue. "Excuse me." Fox said, walking over to a man in the croud, fingers crossed and cursing every time the blue team took a hit. "What's this battle about?" The man, almost weeping turned to Fox, "The Krill is deciding to segregate the classes." "With a gladiatorial battle?" Fox asked. "Of course with a gladiator fight!" the man shouted. "I'm gonna lose my daughter because the Nays are dying. Where the hell are you from? Byzantium?" "Yup, Byzantium, that's us." Fox grinned, taking the mans hand and shaking it. "We're still stuck in the dark ages of talking our laws out. How long's it been that you've been ding it like this?" "What does it matter? I'm never going to see my daughter again! Just because the Krill decided the Nays were fought by Kalethes' gladiators" "Who or what is the Krill?" Fox asked. "You really are from Byzantium aren't you?" Another man, slightly smugger asked. "That obvious?" Fox asked, moving back across with Josie and leaving the stressed man alone. "You don't know our Lord Krill. It gives it away. My name is Sorat. And the law has been decided by the gladiators for a year now, Our Lord Krill decreed it." "But this is Athens, Senate central." "Don't be foolish. The Senate were killed by the fire Lords last year, Lord Krill protected the city from them." "Fire Lords, Lord Krill. Alright." Fox nodded. "Thanks." he turned on his heel and took a step away with Josie. "Gotta meet this Lord K-" He froze as he felt something. Something unfeelable in Anceint Greece. "The Battle goes to the Yays." a voice called througout the colluseum. then a tingle ran up Fox's spine as a particle cannon charged and fired, disintegrating the loser. "We need to get an audience with him." He said, grimly. "That wasn't even earth 2010 tech let alone ancient Greece..."

Josey smiled, relief washing over her face as he assured her that they were friends. It was nice to know, even though she was fully aware how overwhelming it must seem for him that she just emotionally vomited all over him after only knowing him for less than a day.
"Thank you." She said, putting a hand on his shoulder as she followed him in. "Hey, maybe later after we leave here I can cook you something. I'm a good cook, believe it or-Woah..." Her sentence dropped off as they came in to see the rest of the arena. It was immense.
"Fox..." She gasped. "Is this normal?" He crossed over to one of the observers, asking some questions while Josey's eyes were locked on the two men fighting in the sand below. She had never imagined something like this. A long gash bled freely from the shoulder of one man, the one in the blue. She closed her eyes tightly and turned away to face the man Fox was speaking with as a finger went flying from the man's hand.
She felt sick.
The man Fox addressed was nearly in tears, adding to Josey's confusion about the entire situation. They exchanged words for a minute or two before Fox lead her away a bit but Josey's attention was caught by something that was charging and then light flashed as a laser shot out and destroyed the losing warrior.
Josey gasped, catching hold of Fox's arm in her surprise. "They just vaporized that guy!" She whispered through her teeth, looking around as if fearing they were next. "Who's to say he won't vaporize us if we get a meeting with him? What're you gonna do? Blink him into submission with that torch of yours?"

"Excuse me?" Fox said to the guard, ignoring Josey's question for a moment. "Hi, yeah, I'm The Fox, I'm a representative from Byzantium, here to offer reverence to Lord Krill," he raised the slightly psychic paper again. "Could you point me in the direction of the Lord's viewing box?" The guard stared at the paper for a moment and then nodded. He summoned another guard and ordered him to escort Fox and Josey. They followed as the guard walked at a marching pace in front of them.
"I'm less worried by the idea he might vaporise us than the idea that he has the technology to do so." Fox admitted, hands in pockets. "I know what your goign to say, it's impossible for the Ancient Greeks to have future tech, because you have documented versions of history and none of them had particle cannons, your world would be furthur advanced if they did. But that's not how time works. Its vast and spinny and inny outy, with bells." he described. "Someone with time travel can change things without the people knowing, it's just how it is. Time is constant. Even if something is set in stone it can be changed if it really needs to be... or someone unscrupulous deems it changed."
They turned a few corners and walked up towards the viewing box. Another match had started, though the men in the arena looked like regular people, not gladiators. "My Lord Krill, I present The Fox, emisary from Byzantium." The guard said. "Yup, thats me, and my good friend Josie." He raised a hand and wiggled his fingers. "Hello. Say Hello Josie, its polite and you want me to be less Rude, Though it's very fun" he added under his breath. "Welcome Emisary." the Lord said from the centre of the platform. He was a tall man with an unusually long Neck. His demeanor was very high and mighty, a little strange for Fox considering he was there. "Do you enjoy the law?" Fox stepped into the room and cocked his head to the side a little. "If you want to call it that." He said quietly. Fox stepped forward adn placed his hands on the railings to look out over the battle. "You're judging a crime right now aren't you? the last battle was to decide if a law made it in, this one is to decide if one of those men is a criminal." "You wear funny clothes, Fox, was it?" The Lord commented. Fox turned and leant against the railing he eyed the Lord, he wore a toga with blood spattered across it. there were armaments upon him also, a metalic pauldron shaped like an eagles head, a black belt with a pistol holster, holding a blaster of some type, perhaps sonic. "Your clothes are fairly uncommon yourself, Milord, at least in this day and age." Fox pointed out, "Very beautiful of course." he added, turning back to the battle. "What were the offences?" a man from the side stepped forward. "The battle of Aristo and Falend, Aristo accuses Falend of the theft of his evening meal. Falend pleads not guilty." The man said before disapearing into the back ground. "And that's a death sentence?" Fox asked, astounded. "A death sentence by-" he waved his arm sideways at the large, powerful particle cannon mounted on the corner of the marble railing. "It is our way," "no it's not." Fox argued, turning around once more. "This is athens, City-state of Senators and democracy. You've destroyed that some how. Who are you?" "I am Lord Krill." The man responded, standing up, not liking the way Fox was mouthing off at him. "No, I know who you are, but what are you? You're not human, I can tell that just my sniffing the air, plus the Particle cannon, sonic blaster and-" he pulled his flash light and shone it across the man's metal shoulder before looking at the display. "Mythandellium, space ship alloy from the omega quadrant. You're a long way from home." "Fox?" The being repeated. "You are not human either. that sonic probe-" "Flash Light." "Sonic Flash light... it is not of Earth Origin, beyond their technology... millenia beyond." It pointed out. "Don't change the subject. what are you and how did you get here?"

"Fine. You know what I'm thinking, then you know this is only adding more questions to the list for later!" Josey said under her breath close to Fox as she followed along with him.
They came to the viewing box with the "Lord Krill" person and were ushered inside. Josey's chin physically hurt as she kept it from dropping. Fox introduced them and she cut her eyes at his comment about rudeness. The red head smiled shyly and took a slight bow-like curtsy.
"Hello," She said, her voice small. When Fox took charge of the conversation, Josey turned back to look down at the arena. Her heart sank, she looked over at Fox and whispered, "...They aren't wearing any armor, Fox." She turned to look again, her fingers white around the railing while she watched the two men fighting below.
A minute later and the two alien-men were demanding who each other were, and what they were just as the crowd gasped and reacted to an exceptionally good hit from one of the men to the other. Blood sprayed across the sand and Josey spun to face Fox and Krill.
"This isn't right! It has to stop!" Her eyes were brimming with tears. "They don't have any armor, or anything! What kind of justice is this? Its entertainment!"

"Of course it's entertainment." Lord Krill said stepping down from the throne like chair he had sat upon. He widened his arms and waved at the people. "You think these people would listen to me if it was just my word? no, I gave them entertainment. they live their dull, mundane lives, but for the law. They enjoy the Law." The Lord stepped up to Fox and, towering over him, looked down at him. "You asked how I'm here. I was forced. Sucked through a rip in time and thrown into the Senate amphitheatre." he turned to the guards. Fox turned back to the particle cannon, pulling his glasses from his pocket and donning them to look carefully at one of the control panels on the side. He pulled the specs off and re-pocketted them, stepping away from the wall. "The fools tried to have me restrained," Lord Krill continued. "but I slaughtered them, ate them, time jumping without a shield is exausting. The next morning I claimed that men of fire killed themand I killed them. This city is so ancient and trusting that the flames of the remnant of the piece of ship that came through were all the evidence they needed." Lord Krill stepped up to a guard and placed a hand on the man's head. "However just in case I converted these guards to my cause." He turned back to Fox. "I was forced from my home and throne here." "I can take you back, I have a ship, I can return you to your own time and place." "Oh no, Fox. I don't want to return. I'm a king here. I have what I want, when I want. I was a pesent on my own world but here..." The Krill waived his hands out as one of the men, far bellow in the battle field, was throne to the floor, defeated. Lord Krill moved to the Particle Cannon, but Fox was too quick, he moved in the way. "I wont let you kill him." Fox told the Lord. "I don't know what you are, but I won't let you continue. You can come with me or you can be defeated. I'm warning you, and I don't know how reliable I am for second chances." the man clapped his hands and guards flooded in, grabbing Fox and pulling him aside. The Lord stepped up to him and, reaching into his jacket, took the sonic flash light from the holster. "Hardly one to issue ultimatums. You're not even armed." The Lord stepped up to the machine again as Guards surrounded Josey. "I'm warning you Krill, don't do this!" The Lord laughed and, as the defendant shook off his daze and began to move once more, he grabbed the controls, firing a single high powered bolt of red adn black energy at the man on the floor. "Verdict for the Plaintiff." the Lord said, vaporising the Defendant. "No!" fox shouted. "Throw them in the cells, I will speak with them later. there is much more I wish to know." Lord Krill said, returning to his seat.
The Guards took Fox quietly, he stared Lord Krill out, but otherwise he was co-operative as they dragged him, feet trailing to the lowest reaches of the colluseum.

"You're not a ruler, you're a monster!" Josey glared at the tall lord, her eyes narrow. She sniffed, unsure if her unshed tears were sorrow for the lives she'd seen lost in the last half hour, fear, or simple anger and frustration. Maybe it was a combination of all of the above, she didn't know, she only knew this Krill had to be stopped.
She moved over to stand beside Fox when Krill towered above him, answering a few of the questions Fox had posed. "Fools for trying to fight back, to protect themselves? You're a bully, and a monster..." She muttered, almost growling. "What proof of your strength or power is it to dominate those who have no chance of fighting back? You're a coward."
When the soldier was sent sailing across the room, Josey cried out and ran to his side, kneeling down to check his pulse. He was dead, eyes still open, spread wide in fear while blood trickled from his nose. Josey cringed and looked away as she gently adjusted him into a more peaceful position, hands folded on his chest and softly brushed his eyes closed with the tips of her fingers before standing.
The artist took note of all the sensations around her, the emotions, the tension in the air, the colors and the even the temperature. There would be no recovering from this-if they survived at all-if she couldn't paint it...She kept her mouth shut, her opinions to herself as Fox made his intent known to the Krill, feeling she wouldn't be any help if she interfered now.
...Until the guards obeyed their orders and took Fox by the arms. "No! You can't do this! It's wrong!"
How had this happened? All she had wanted was a quick stroll around the city, to listen to the senate debate a bit and check out some statuary...Not get history rewritten or Fox killed...Her bad luck, again...Her lip began to quiver until anger took her mind again. The Krill went back to the machine, and more soldiers moved into position around Fox while others began to surround her.
She cried out and jumped on the back of one moving passed her, grabbing him in a head lock and beating on his helmet with her fist. It took three of them to pry her off the back of their comrade. The verdict passed to the plaintiff and Josey saw red. Fox cried out and the soldiers began to drag the travelers out as their master returned to his seat.
"You're a monster! You can't do this!"

Fox was thrown into the cell with some force, knocking him to the floor on the other side. He forced himself into a seated position as Josie was pushed in after him. The doors were slammed shut and locked.
"Told you we wouldn't get vaporised." he smiled, wrapping his arms around his legs. "I'm sorry I got you into this. I'll get us out of this some how." He forced himself up to his feet and, absent a window to look out of he began to pace. "I just don't understand what a Krillitane is doing here. Krillitanes don't have that kind of technlogy, and what's all this rubbish about being sucked through space and time by a crack, no, a rip. what could create a rip in space and time, what would want to? and what would want to send an insignificant wretch like Lord Krill to 410BC?"
Fox looked across at Josey. "What do you think? This is your world, you probably know more about ancient greece than I do. Why would someone do this? Why would someone send him back so far in time."

Thanks to the fighting and thrashing around, Josey was being restrained by a rather large soldier who had her by the hair and one arm twisted up behind her back in a vice like grip as he ushered her down the corridors to the dungeon.
As soon as they reached an open door, both travelers were tossed in roughly. Josey hit her knees hard, rolled over and scooted back to sit with her back against the wall. Tears were tracing down her cheeks and she wiped them away each time they fell, trying to hide the fact that she was crying.
She sniffed and took a deep breath when he asked what she thought, looking up at the ceiling and hugging her knees to her chest. "I dunno." She said. "It's ancient Greece...it basically served as the foundation for politics in my time...lots of myths and legends were started here...Its basically the cornerstone for modern times. If Greece wasn't how I know it to be, then the world won't be anything like it is in my day."
Sniffing again, Josey reached up and rubbed her fingers in her hair where her head hurt from the guard keeping a tight grip on her. "Maybe whoever he belongs with decided they didn't like him. He's not exactly a winning personality." Josey looked over at Fox, wiping at her wet cheeks again. "Or maybe they were some crazed religious group and tossed him in the rip he talked about as a sacrifice to appease some gods or something..."
Her brows furrowed suddenly and she shook her head, "What's a Krillitane?"

"Hm? oh, a Krillitain is an alien," he said simply. "Long necks, generally look human, they can steal biological atributes from other races. Last time I saw the Krillitain they were batlike, kinda short, but with the ability to project any terestrial appearance. By that I mean they can make themselves look human. This one must be from a point further back in their evolution."
Fox scratched the back of his head and stared up at the cieling. He froze. "Wait..." he muttered. "OH!" he shouted. "I'm Stupid! I'm an Idiot!" He pulled the test tube out of his pocket. "Krillitain Oil! makes people smart when they eat it! I mean, not me, obviously, like I could get smarter. Not the point." he spoke quickly, he was talking to himself as much as to Josey, he was jsut putting things together, point by point. "The point is, Krillitain are allergic to their oils, they've changed their physiology so much that the Krillitain oil is poisonous to Krillitains, and I have a tastey little tube of it." He threw the tube up in the air and caught it, barely, and dropped it again, but on the second try he caught it before it hit the floor. "Ok, don't be showey with the only leverage we have." He reminded himself.
"By the way, that was some fancy footwork earlier, jumping on the guards. I mean completely idiotic, you could have killed yourself, and I'd apreciate it if you don't do anything to get yourself killed again." He smiled. "But it was impressive." the smile became a grin. "But I don't think they sent him here to change anything... I mean they brought space alloys particle cannons and sonic blasters... All that'll do is advance the human race and make them more deadly... Unless it was a human, TORCHWOOD maybe... "

Krillitain. Got it. Josey thought as he explained. She watched him as he pondered. When he froze, Josey stood, crossing her arms until he shouted and made her jump practically out of her skin.
"What are you talking about?!" She demanded in shock. He immediately went on into one of his rambles of a million miles per hour and Josey had to strain her mind to keep up. He nearly dropped the tube and she threw up her hand as if she could make it freeze in mid air, looking relieved when he caught it.
When he mentioned the way she'd fought back upstairs, Josey tucked her hair behind her ears and looked at the ground until he mentioned "Sorry. Reflex...Nearly got in a few gang fights once or twice...I don't mean to do things, I'm just...impulsive." She shrugged, looking bashful.
"So, what are we going to do to help these people and set things right?" She asked.
