This is a private roleplay between Cais [Never Crazy] and Liarae [Lonely Angelic]

Setting:

Main Street

Liarae is out to find something to sketch and meets Cais at his family's shop.
PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2011 1:42 am

Liarae walked down Main Street, passing shop after shop, looking for something. She wanted something good to draw, which was why she'd come here today. Main Street was always flooded with different people, buying or selling new things every day. It was a bored artist's dream.

While she walked, Liarae let her mind drift to that morning. She'd let her mother rant at her while she played Xiangqi with a servant, tuning her out. As soon as she left Liarae knew it was the best time to leave the house while her mother got herself pampered to feel better.

A shout pulled her back onto Main Street, and she looked up, brushing her blue bangs back. A woman had started shouting at someone else over a hair piece at one shop and Liarae sighed at how mundane people could be. It sounded just like her mother screeching at her, and she'd just about given up on finding anything to draw when a colorful flash caught her eye. Now she was curious.

The crowds had come again, that was fortunate. Cais had been left to sit the booth again as often happened on market days. Bottles, trinkets and even window panes had been taken from the warehouse and placed for display as well as goods which had been exchanged from his family to other families for a wider selection. It seemed to do decent business.

Cais sat in the booth, eyes on the prowl for any would be thieves, he kept his eyes open and ears alert, watching as a crowd had formed. Market days were always as this, boring, busy and rewarding all at the same time. With a sigh he passed another trinket to a girl, taking her money and pocketing it into the earnings bag tied around his waist. It made him feel good to help the family, but humiliating to have to take charge of the shop.

He tapped his foot as he took a seat again. When was his father coming back? Or had he been led astray by another trading venture? He grumbled. "When is something going to change?" he muttered, before taking a watchful eye once more.

Liarae walked up to what appeared to be a glass shop. She stood at the back of the crowds and looked in, tucking her sketch pad beneath her arm. Perhaps I can find a piece to use as a subject, she thought to herself, pushing her way to the front so she wouldn't miss out on anything else that could make a nice sketch.

The boy sitting there taking money looked bored, but she barely looked at him before looking at the glass wares behind him. Which piece had glinted to catch her eye before, she wondered. Most of the objects looked like vases, or bowls, useful typical things, nothing she felt drawn to artistically.

Then something with color caught her eye, and she knew that was what had drawn her here. It wasn't that it had color, many of the objects here were colorful, it was its shape and specific colors that excited her. It looked half formed, sitting above his head on a shelf by itself, either ignored or too special to be placed precariously by other things, she wasn't sure which. The colors were blue and pink, her hair and scale colors respectively.

That object, which couldn't be used for much except decoration, and Liarae had to have it.

It was growing louder as the teen shuffled money out of hands and replaced them with traded goods or from trinkets set on displays behind his head. One in particular was there, one not finished and one he'd hope to be rid of, a piece of a set long since forgotten from another time. That hope was quickly fading as more hands exchanged money for other such treasures, he paid them little mind, seeing all but a mass flashing around bits of paper and coin. Just another part of the cycle. He thought bitterly, keeping his eyes away from the offending piece. Perhaps he should have just broken it while he had the chance.

In front of him a flash of blue color caught his eyes and he blinked a few times, the blobby mass of shoppers fading from his vision for a moment while a lone figure came into view. Cais cocked his head from one side, rolling it slowly to the other to catch a full view. The Lunarian girl was one he'd never seen before - he was well sure of that. Scowling he frowned, Probably another silly girl buying a silly trinket for her room... again. A silent rage passed through him quickly. He was not one to mind making money, that was something he'd learned from his father and was well aware of. Despite that fact, there had always been a churning in his stomach if one of his pieces went to what he deemed "the wrong Lunarian". Most of the time he would settle on whoever had the money regardless of that emotion but the mere sight of the blue eyed and blue haired girl drove something straight through him. Something dark and emotional that he was well unprepared to deal with.

Clearing his throat he prepared for the worst and glanced to her over the small group which remained. "You need something?" He said indignantly, shoving some money into a small iron lock box. "I don't like window-shoppers." Skating over his words with a bit of venom his angered brow clenched tighter while he eyes grew sharper. Where was his father when this sort of lot was about?

The tone caught her attention before anything else did, and Liarae looked at the boy with fire in her eyes. She was of noble blood, and not pleased with being talked to in any way not regarding her state. Ignoring the fact he could not have known this as they had never met before, and not caring either, she made sure their eyes locked.

"That," was all she said, her tone icy cold and her eyes scalding. She pointed at the object resting above his head, irritated even more that he had ruined her good mood at finding such a treasure with his tone of voice and lack of respect.

What a rude little boy, she thought to herself, now just wanting this transaction over with as quickly as possible, and not caring what his actual age was. She needed to get somewhere she could draw this artwork before the light was entirely lost.

The finger and indignant reply did nothing to quell Cais's mood. Heat from the road beneath the booth had begin to rise, creating a stifling vacuum from where he sat. That combined with what he was assuming was a self-entitled girl was dragging his mood down further. Following her finger he glanced above his head with a grimace. Though she wouldn't be aware of it, the piece had been meant for someone like her, or rather, his quickly judged interpretation of her. Someone from another life... He would be damned to let it fall to someone like that.

"Not for sale, sorry." He put simply, turning to take money from another customer, making sure to avoid eye contact. He was sure she'd get the hint if he managed to ignore her. That was something his father had forbade him from doing, but Cais was far more willing to take scolding from his father than have to think of the final resting place for such a piece. It was already looking like he'd have ti haul it back in again.

Leaving never even crossed her mind. As soon as the words were out of his mouth she was ready to jump over and take the piece she wanted, but her parents had taught her better than that and her mother would scold her until her ears fell off. As little as she cared about what her mother had to say, being forced to listen wasn't high on her list of things to do.

Instead of leaving, she looked at him again and moved to stand directly in front of him, forcing him to look at her and not allowing anyone else to make a sale at the moment.

"And why not? It's out to be sold, why put it out if you had no intention of selling it?" Though she was not used to not getting her way out in the streets, this intrigued her as much as it infuriated her. Setting her sketch pad down she leaned close to him. "Just tell me what you want for it."

He was growing tired of her and looked at her with narrow eyes. "I'm not selling it to someone like you. Plain and simple." He said looking back at it before turning back to face her again. "It's unfinished anyways, why would you want it?" That was the real answer he was after and he kept his fierce stare on her, looking her in the eye. He wasn't used to someone so forward, especially not a girl.

With the same ferocity he grunted a bit and moved back from her, noticing many of the other customers had left. Accusingly he shot her a sharp glare and spoke in a low voice. "Now look what you've done, you ran them off." He said, nearly gnashing his teeth out of anguish. "Enough is enough, go bother someone else." He said angrily, taking his seat again and waving his hand at her in a dismissive manner. He'd be damned if he was going to put up with her any longer.

Ignoring the insult, Liarae stared at him. "If you had just sold it to me that wouldn't be a problem, now would it?" she shot back, keeping her irritation at being refused in check. What did he care what she planned to do with it? Why did it matter to him so much anyway? Looking at it again, she knew it would be hers. Liarae was never refused for long, she wanted that glass orb, it didn't matter what it was.

"I want it for this," she told him, pulling out her sketchpad and opening it for him to see what she had inside. It didn't matter what page she opened to, she was proud of her work. "It's perfect for my art, I want to draw it. That is the only thing that has drawn my attention all day, and the longer we stand here arguing about it the less light I will have to draw by." There, maybe that was enough to get him to give it up. It better be, I'm sick of arguing with this boy over something so menial.

The circular argument was becoming more maddening by the second and his eyes wandered from her to groups of Lunarians moving past the marketplace stall, staring eagerly but afraid to approach under the circumstances. He watched her carefully as she spoke, feeling only the heat of frustration move through him with every word that left her mouth. And yet she remained, arguing over something. He figured her to be someone of high class who had often demanded things and gotten them. Opening his mouth for another insult it was slowly clasped at the sight of the sketch book. For an instant he was immediately caught off guard and sat blinking owlishly with his bright eyes set on it.

"You want it so you can DRAW it?" He asked indignantly, glancing back to her eyes, noting that her anger had also peaked. It was completely rhetorical as he was certain that what she said, she meant, though he could hardly see it as a good quality as of the moment. A long silence passed before he drew a hand back, grabbing the small lump of glass from the shelf and turning back to her. Clearly he was annoyed, pissed off even. He rarely felt this way and rarer still would concede when his anger erupted from him.

But deep inside he had to admit she had the spirit of an artist. Probably her only good quality. He mocked in his head before holding a hand out. "25." He put simply, in a rough voice. "25 and I'll give it up so you can go." He put emphasis on the last word, still watching her with a sharp stare. At this point he could far less care for what circumstances that she left, only the fact that she would leave concerned him. Enough money to replace some tools to make another. A thought echoed as he remained motionless, awaiting her reaction.

The anger slowly melted away when she heard him say he would sell it. A small smile graced her features, a genuine emotion she rarely expressed, and suppressed nearly as quickly. His price meant nothing to her, 25 was more than it was worth, but to her it was priceless. Art always was.

"Thank you,' she said calmly, keeping her expression schooled to the non-existent face she was used to. Pulling out her wallet, Liarae handed him the exact change he asked for, picking up the item she had wanted so much. Victory is so sweet, she thought to herself, relishing the feeling it gave her to be able to walk away with what she wanted. And walk away she did, knowing he wanted her gone so she would stop scaring away his other customers.

That did not matter to her, nor did it bother her. Taking her new found treasure, Liarae made her way to a calm secluded area to begin sketching it before the sun set and she had to make her way back home.

He felt the force of her thank you and promptly stuffed the money, glaring back at her with a hateful stare. The glittering of the glass caught his eye as she carried it off in a hurry, the pink and blue hues giving a last goodbye to his eyes. A sigh escaped him and he moved his hair back calmly with a hand, attending back to the customers which had come back around.

"There's the end of that." he muttered, taking hold of the cashbox and shoving the money into it. Looking back to the street he was glad to be rid of her, with a shake of his head he returned into a state of boredom. His mind was swollen with the fresh memory of the encounter, which caused him to frown. He'd probably never see her again, and liked that idea. Someone so pompous and full of privilege... and yet, something had stirred during their encounter, something he hadn't felt in a while.

"Hn." He let out, letting out another sigh. "You never know..."
