sssssssSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE screamed the lion-headed pen.

Johan opened his eyes, blinking blearily into the dark of his room as the last remnants of his dream dispersed. That awful, but effective noise was nothing more than his alarm, and was quickly dispatched with a surly toss of his arm. Johan yawned and stretched in the blessed silence, listening to the muffled sounds of activity from the surrounding rooms. Not being a morning person in the slightest, Johan remained in a post sleep daze for several minutes, simply sitting at the edge of his bed. His eyes were pulled down towards his chest, where he could clearly make out his heart beating through the crystal encasing it, and vaguely the shape of his lungs to either side. Habitual disgust at the sight finally shook him from his lethargy. Scowling, he ran his fingers through his hair, and looked for his clothes.

------

An hour later, he was nose-deep in a book, cross referencing certain similarities between the Mithranidoon curse and the Missouri Triad Incident when he remembered there was a class he needed to attend today. He glanced at the door to his room and back to his books with trepidation. True, he had come to Amityville to broaden his studies, and to eventually make it to the human world, but he could never shake the feeling that if he just kept studying for a little longer, the answer to his curse would be right there.

Realistically, Johan had to admit he'd been telling himself just that for several years, and no doubt his ancestors had thought the same thing too. While the answer was there, (Johan would not tolerate the possibility that it wasn't) attending class wouldn't delay his finding it too long, and he generously thought that class might even point him onto a new line of research.

So, Johan gathered his things, tucking them away in his robe, and locked the door behind him as he set out.

Twenty minutes later, he was wishing he had a map of the campus.

Thirty minutes later, he was wishing he'd stayed in his room, as he was quickly overtaking a familiar shapely figure. Haddiya limping along on crutches, creating a near perfect roadblock for the sorcerer, who wasn't keen on drawing her attention. However, backtracking in this maze masquerading as a school would definitely make him late for class, if not miss it altogether, so the boil had little choice. Perhaps if he just hurried past, and tried to avoid eye contact, she wouldn't notice him.

Glaring at the floor, trying to make it obvious he had somewhere to be, Johan picked up his pace and attempted to make it past the ghoul.

Broken ankles were bothersome, to say the least. In the time since their return home from that nightmarish island she'd discovered that the injury would take a long time to heal, and her mobility during that time was terribly limited. She'd tried at first to simply limp about, and within the familiar layout of her room that had worked, but out on the grounds of the school or within the halls between classrooms that simply wasn't an option. Besides that, it hurt putting weight on it. Tolerable in tiny doses, but she wasn't about to subject herself to that much pain trying to hobble around from place to place.

She'd found a solution in a pair of crutches. Though perhaps solution was a little too ambitious a word. They allowed her to get around relatively pain free (Her arms got sore after a while.), but she couldn't carry a whole lot, and it still took a bit of time getting from point A to point B.

It worked, but she was glad it wouldn't be a permanent thing. When the bandages finally came off and she could walk on her own again she would be incredibly happy.

Until then though, she was reduced to moving about with the aid of the crutches. Currently making her slow way down a hall towards her first class of the day. Unaware of the reaper coming up behind her or his desire to pass unnoticed. Not until he moved to over take her and the two of his shoe caught the end of one crutch as it lowered to connect with the floor. Jerking it suddenly forward and pitching the demon ghoul forward with a startled yelp that ended in a gasp as she landed on her hands and knees. Crutches clattering loudly to either side of her on the floor.

Jack, that hurt! Not just the impact, but the sudden jarring of her ankle when she tried to catch herself. Wincing, she jerked her head up to find the one responsible.

There's nothing quite as effective at making you look and feel like an idiot than stubbing your toes. However, Johan had managed to double the idiocy factor by taking out another student in the process. When his toe had hit the crutch, he hissed an intake of breath at the disproportionate amount of pain, and lifted the foot to rub at the offending toe. Until he realized he'd managed to knock over Haddiya, and when she looked up at him, he froze. For a second he just stared back at her, a statue of FAIL, before he lowered his foot again, and cleared his throat.

"Beg your pardon." he apologized, cheeks flushing. "I vas perhaps too eager to reach class."

He bent down to retrieve one of her crutches, holding it out to her like a peace offering.

Narrowed blues snapped to the offending party then widened as she realized who it was. Her scowl melting into more of a soft smile as she sat up on her knees with a tiny wince, delicate hands roaming down to rub at them to chase away the annoying pain from landing so roughly. It had hurt, but it had been an accident, so the demon certainly wasn't angry. Besides, she'd not seen the reaper boil since he'd emerged from that terrible fog on the beach back on the island, and she had been wondering how he was fairing since their return.

"That seems like you," she mused, taking the offered crutch from him and laying it over her lap. "Eager to learn."

She rolled her shoulders in a small shrug in answer to his apology, smiling in full. "It's alright, I'm not hurt anymore then I already was." She didn't think so anyways, of course she was no expert on anything regarding medicine. It didn't feel more damaged, at any rate. Of course she was still rather challenged in terms of mobility, and the realization of that was clear as she glanced down at herself and the floor, lips pursed as she wondered just how she was going to get back to her feet with nothing to pull herself up on.

She wasn't, not without help, and she released a little sigh as she turned back up to Johan. "Do you think you could give me a hand?"

Guilt at tripping the demoness wasn't enough to smooth the flinch that accompanied her request for 'a hand'. Johan had been hoping to avoid just that by handing her the crutch. But there it lay across her lap, and Haddiya was still looking at him. Waiting. And he was responsible.

With the sinking feeling that he'd somehow played into her hands, but unable to do anything about it, Johan reluctantly acquiesced.

"This vonce." he warned, schooling his facial muscles into a slightly less scowly scowl. He was going to be civil. He was going to be civil. He was going to be civil. Dear Jack, don't let this give her any ideas. He held out one hand towards her, though made no move to touch her. Apparently, he expected her to use his hand to haul herself upright.

She fought the urge to roll her eyes as he lowered a hand towards her. "I think these fall under special circumstances," she commented idly, reaching up to grab his hand so she could pull herself up. The crutch bracing against the floor for a little added support as single footed balance was regained. "So I highly doubt I'll be asking again any time soon." She smiled at him and it was clear by her expression she was teasing him. "Unless of course you manage to knock me over again." She would of course request his assistance again should he manage to somehow plow her over again in the future. It was only fair.

She was careful to take her hand back from him the instant she was settled on her foot, remembering from the boat trip he had an aversion to touch. She didn't understand it, at all, but she would at least try to respect it, for now. She may take amusement and satisfaction from light teasing, but she wasn't cruel, nor a bully, and she wouldn't do anything that would seriously bother another person.

Settling the one crutch under her left arm, she glanced around the floor for the other and finding it close, but not quite within grabbing distance. Frowning, she took a hobbled step towards it before using the end of the crutch she had to nudge it closer. Once more bracing the thing on the floor so she could bend down to retrieve it's match. "So, how've you been?" The tone was casual, the question was not. "You know, since the trip."

"Let us hope." Johan said in reply, attempting to keep her from pulling him down on top of her as she regained her footing. It seemed she at least remembered that he didn't like being touched, for she relinquished his hand immediately after regaining equilibrium. Johan took several steps away, giving Haddiya plenty of space in which to maneuver to the remaining crutch. He was not going to risk tripping her again!

At the same time, he wasn't going to rush off and leave her, considering she was still trying to get everything back together. Besides, she was talking to him, and it would be rude to leave without replying.

"Studying." was the immediate response to the first question. The mention of the disastrous trip brought only silence. Setting his jaw, Johan arched one eyebrow at Haddiya. The casual tone wasn't appreciated. The memory of the beach and the disturbing visions was not something he planned to speak about to anyone. Ever.

"I haf been vell enough." was the reply that finally came.

She took her time situating the crutches beneath her arms, blue eyes trained on the reaper as he gave his speedy retort, then add more after a moment. A thoughtful frown tugging at the corners of her lips before being forced away. "Good," she offered at last, dropping her gaze to the floor as she nudged to rubber tip of one crutch along the tile. She had intention of prodding further into the topic. It would only drag up bad memories, and that was the last thing Yaya wanted. Really, she was only interested in his well being, and it was good that he was doing alright now that they were back. The same couldn't be said for all their peers.

Her feigned causality was a safety mechanism. If she let any emotion into her voice it gave the traumatic memories power, and she would allow that. She'd managed to leave it all behind her, for the most part, and she wasn't going to let it crawl back to consume her.

"I'm glad you're doing ok," she offered at last, smiling again as she looked back up at him. They didn't know each other well, or really at all, but their meeting on the beach, that shared horror, the concern he'd shown for her injury. It meant something to Hadiyya. They'd barely shared half a conversation with each other but it was impossible now for the ghoul to look at him as a stranger.
