Ignis paced the length of the cavern worriedly, every once in a while peering out of the cavern towards the beaten dirt path that lead to the landing area. He had moved back to his mountain aerie now that the children were grown, he had appreciated the almost fairytale beauty of the glen he had raised them in but he was a creature of stone and sky and he felt uneasy trapped beneath the cover of the trees. Both Sophia and Adrian were old enough and strong enough to fend for themselves, the thought tugged on his heartstrings.
Their childhood had been a good time for him, full of laughter and hugs and the nights spent snuggled up between two tiny fuzzy bodies. It had been good for his soul, he wished he could find their mother and thank her for the gift she had given him in them. His son had moved in with him when he returned home, Adrian enjoyed the mountains almost as much as his father and Ignis had been glad to not have to say goodbye to both of them.
He smiled sadly as he though of his sweet Sophia Rose making her way in the world below, he missed waking up to the sight of his daughters angelic face. Ignis glanced at the doorway again, Adrian had not returned from the night before. He was well aware of his son's recent exploits, Adrian was in the business of breaking hearts, a business that Ignis heartily disapproved of.
Ignis trotted out of the cave and partway down the path, the sun had only just crested the horizon and the air was thin and moist. Ignis' long orange hair flowed around him wild and unbound in the breeze as his fierce crimson gaze swept across the gradually brightening sky. "Dammit Adrian, where are you!" he muttered heatedly under his breath, he had never been gone this long before.

As the sun filtered through the leaves of the forest, a sunbeam struck Adrian in the eye. He twitched in annoyance, ruffling his wings a bit. Was it morning already? Hm.
Cracking an eye, he noticed that he was alone in the small clearing and he let out a great sigh that moved his whole body. Things had not gone to plan the night before and he was glad to not see the mare the next morning. He hadn't even got any blood off her for the trouble, he thought with a grumble. Laying in the grass, no matter how soft, was becoming uncomfortable as the dew settled in his coat and he sat up with a great deal of effort. Ugh, was that dirt on his normally pristine white coat? He shivered at the thought, wondering where the nearest body of water was. Adrian could tell from the feel that his hair was a mess and he searched his immediate area for his cleaver unsuccessfully.
Wasn't that just a b***h, he muttered, the mare had taken his knife presumably. It didn't cross his mind that he could have lost it himself until he nearly tripped over it while searching for some water later.
---
Once clean, he decided it was time to go back to Ignis' place. His hair was once again smooth and silky and his coat was a gleaming white. He smirked at his reflection in the water he had found and winked at himself. The reflection winked with him on the glassy surface of the pond, only occasionally disturbed by a ripple created by the little stream of water that fed it from the greater lake nearby.
With a grunt of effort, he threw himself into the sky. It was only a ten minute flight to get back home from here, he knew. Hopefully he could sneak into the cave before Ignis noticed he had been gone...
A few minutes later brought his home in to view and he quickly came in for a landing, his bright orange hair falling around him in a cloud as he touched down. He flipped it to one side of his neck and prepared to sneak in, hopefully Ignis was still asleep.

If Ignis hadn't have been so angry with the boy he would have laughed at the sight of his youngest child tiptoeing gingerly(pun!! XDD) down the path towards the cave, his masses of orange hair still damp from what was presumably a morning swim. Perhaps he was misjudging Adrian, his excuse could very well be innocent, he stared hard at the young stallion with softened eyes for a moment as he considered, but the furtive movements and guilty eyes sweeping from side to side were telling in themselves.
He stepped out of his hiding place slowly, and deliberately moved foreword until he had placed himself on the path between Adrian and their eyrie. His eyes were hard and feral as he directed the full force of his glare at Adrian.
"I cannot for the life of me decide where you learned this behavior... Because I certainly did not raise you to treat females like trifles or toys to be enjoyed and then tossed away like garbage." He hissed between gritted teeth, his voice charged with a fury that made his crimson eyes seem to burn and sent the gravel beneath his hooves clattering down the easy slope towards Adrian. "This stops now Adrian. I know this is nothing more than a game to you, you're young and handsome and if your looks aren't enough to draw them in than your empty words and shameless flirtations soon have them following you like a flock of mindless sheep... But it won't be so much fun when one of those foolish chits comes back to you with her menfolk at her back and a belly full of foals, demanding that you do the right thing by her!!!"

Adrian continued to try to sneak into his 'room' (really just a nook in the cave they lived in) but had the horrible feeling he was being watched.
The feeling was proven true when Ignis stepped out of the shadows, and Adrian prepared to weave a lie to explain where he had been. Perhaps he had flown so far he had gotten tired and decided to sleep the night elsewhere? No, he had used that excuse last week...
Then, all of a sudden Ignis was shouting at him. His eyes were wide and his mouth dropped open in shock, his father had never yelled at him this way. The look in Ignis' eyes scared him a little bit, not that he would ever let the man know that.
He flinched at the end, the idea not something that hadn't crossed his mind. However, who was he to tell him what to do with his life?
"I...who do you think you are? I can do what I want, with whomever I want. If angry fathers come chasing, I can fly farther and faster than almost anyone. I will not be tied down by you or anyone!" he shouted back, his anger flaring and chasing his fear away for the moment.
((omg, I can't do an angry fight with a parental figure because I have only had like, 2 in my entire life, lmao))

Ignis' eyes widened incredulously and then narrowed before he turned away to gaze off into the horizon, no longer able to bring himself to look at Adrian. He stood for a few minutes, silently, letting the blazing flames of his temper slowly bank as he regained control of himself but their searing heat was replaced with a soul numbing chill, a cold fury fed by the disappointment that wrapped around his heart in a sickening fist.
"You would abandon your children?" He asked in a dead whisper, "Abandon your family? After all we've been through you , I am nothing more to you than a tie that's holding you back?" He shook his head and seemed to deflate.
"A tie no longer," he called over his shoulder with a cruel finality that drove daggers of ice into his heart. He regretted the words as soon as they wriggled their way past his lips but his fierce pride would not allow him to take them back.
Perhaps we both have much left to learn my son, he mourned silently.

Adrian flinched as the harsh words impacted his heart. He hadn't meant that his family was a tie he did not need, for he still took great comfort in the presence of his father and sister. His dalliances with mares were because he found he could more than anything else. It was fun and nothing more, to his mind that is. Ignis clearly didn't understand his intentions, had misunderstood his words...he'd meant more that it would never come to that. It wouldn't happen to him, unintended children happened to others who weren't as great as he...right?
Either way, he was hurt by Ignis' words. What had the man meant by that? He hung his head to cover his eyes, a painful feeling in his chest.
"What is that supposed to mean?" he whispered hoarsely, a lump forming in his throat and all signs of anger and bravado gone.

In his foolish pride, Ignis found himself unable to drop his cruel bravado. His heart shriveled as he listened with increasing chagrin to the words that emerged from his lips seemingly of their own accord. Adrian was young, foolish, untried by the hardships of life, all of this he had periodically repeated to himself whenever his temper spiked after the young stallion had returned home after a night of meaningless dalliance. Ignis knew his son had a good heart. He meant no harm to the mares he trifled with, and it was likely that most if not all of those mares didn't mind being subjected to his whimsical affections, brief though they were, Adrian was attractive and absolutely charming when he put his mid to it. Something had Ignis on edge the last few days, he couldn't quite put a hoof on whatever it was that had him so out of sorts but it was that which fueled his temper now and he had contemptibly directed the brunt force of that anger at his son in an unconscious attempt to relieve it.
Nevertheless the hurtful words had already been spoken and they hung heavily between the proud Angeni and his son. They could not be retracted without losing face and Ignis himself, although he would never outwardly admit it, behaved immaturely and foolishly at times despite having already raised two children.
"Choose which is more important to you, Adrian, your dalliances or your family, because you will not be living under my roof while you continue behaving this way."

It was uncanny, he would later think, how quickly one's emotions could change. He'd gone from angry to hurt and now back to angry. Only now it was worse, because his father was trying to order him about as if he were still a foal. True, he was barely into adulthood, but he could make his own choices. A fire burned in his chest as he glared across the distance, meeting Ignis' eyes defiantly once more.
"Don't mistake my words, father. I am not choosing one or the other. In fact, I refuse to do so. You want me gone? Fine. I'll go, but know that it is because of you that I do. I don't need you to make my choices for me." he spat.
His head was pounding and his nostrils flaring to take in air quickly. With a final look at his father, he launched back into the air and flew away to find somewhere to stay for the night.

Ignis felt a heavy sorrow settle over him as he watched his son fly off into the distance.
"Fine!" He yelled after the retreating Adrian, "fine" he repeated quietly to himself. Suddenly gripped by a tidal wave of pain laced rage he turned to a nearby boulder, spun around and kicked it with all of his might. There was a thunderous detonation and the stone was reduced to a uniform pile of gravel beneath his massive hooves. "Take that" he exclaimed spitefully at what had once been the offending boulder, feeling a bit ridiculous even as the words left his mouth.
Something had him on edge today, he couldn't quite put a hoof on it but demolishing the rock had released some of that pent up irritation, leaving him feeling more like his normal self. "Oh, Adrian," he murmured sadly, turning to gaze once more at the rapidly shrinking speck in the distance. His regret was almost palpable. One of the most important lessons a parent cam ever learn was not to make your children suffer because of your moods, not that his head felt clearer he realized that that had been exactly what he was doing.
Ignis would never admit it out loud, but he now realized that the thing that had sparked the fight between him and Adrian had been jealousy. It was terribly petty and not endearing in the slightest. Truth be told, Ignis was lonely. Sometimes desperately so, it seemed he would never find someone to share his life with. He had his children of course, they had filled the void in their younger years, but they were grown now, and off experiencing the world on their own. The nest was empty, and Ignis was once again alone.
He realized that he didn't like it one bit. He would find Adrian in the morning, once both of their tempers had had enough time to cool, and apologize. They were family, Adrian would forgive him, and everything would be okay again. Then, perhaps, it was time to go out looking for love. Doubtless, he wouldn't find it while hiding away on this mountaintop.
