It was a quiet day around the Weyr. Wykla decided to take the opportunity and bring her crew down to the beach. At the edge, she took her shoes off and set them aside. For the trip she'd chosen to wear a light shirt and shorts. Shoes ditched, the girl strode across the hot sands.
"Kameth? You coming?" She looked around to see the blue dragon digging himself a wallow into the sand. Wykla sighed softly. "You're going to ruin that nice oiling I gave you and dull your hide. Weren't you going to join me out here?"
The blue paused in his circling to look at His. I wont Mine. I know you worked very hard on it. Once I lay down I wont move much. I'll be nearby on the beach, plus the sand is warm. Kameth looked calmly at His with whirling blue eyes. If anything comes up I am only a thought away.
Wykla had to admit he was right. Even though she wanted to go for a walk, he was still only a baby. "Alright, just try not to roll too much Kameth." She turned to start a slow walk along the beach with Boreal and Fescues flying overhead.
Boreal darted over his girl's head then took off ahead. Calling to his green daughter to come help him search for shells for their girl. Fescues gave a cheep and followed along un-interestedly in shells. She wanted to hunt for stranded fish and shellfish.

Maybe we will find shiny things. My pile has gotten so small. Cheer takes it all. Zaybreth chirped at the gold who gave a sheepish merp back. It was a lovely day and for once Ralae was going to enjoy it. Zaybreth was itching for a wash and swim with dolphins. You need more sun too.
The girl chuckled and threw her head back to the sun, enjoying being underneath the green. No trips in Time. No thinking about boys or Thread. Just her, Zay, Cheer and opening her eyes to look down she blinked.
Apparently others.
It is our friend. The one who Impressed Kameth. We shall land and have friends to talk too! Zaybreth tucked her wings and moved in to land. The small dragon, always pleasant and happy, warbled a hello to the blue.
Ralae said nothing as they came down on the shoreline. Since Wykla's Impression and everything in between, much time had passed. Neither had really had the chance to speak but Ralae hoped her friend would still want to talk to her. "Hello Wykla!"
Cheer swooped in and began to do loops around Boreal.

Wykla was walking and letting the surf wash in, covering her feet as she looked for shells. The water was cool and the sand soft. She was hoping he would keep his word when a warble drew her attention up. It was not Kameth's warble.
Shading her eyes, Wykla picked out a green hide. She heard her name and waved. What good timing Ralae had in showing up when they were there. Heading over she grinned up. "Ralae! It's good to see you. Hello Zaybreth, your looking good today."
Kameth lifted his head from his legs to look at the bigger green. Good day to you and Yours Zaybreth. He stretched his wings out across the top of the sand to warm them.
Boreal saw the gold and crooned a warm welcome. Letting her loop around him, he tried to keep his eyes on her. Fescues, sensing her father distracted, darted off toward a rocky outcrop to hunt for rocktails.

Ralae and Zaybreth walked up slowly, allowing Wykla and Kameth time to see them. She had not grown much, if any at all and could still look her friend straight in the eye. She would not let the dark clouds cover up what would be a good time with her dragon and her friend. "And it is good to see you as well Wykla. It has been a while. How goes lessons and Kameth?"
Zaybreth stayed close, supporting her rider as they finally made it to where everyone was. Her hide was in good color, though it showed her scars and mottled wings. The green took pride in her new look. You are looking well Kameth. Much bigger than before.
Cheer chirped and gossiped to Boreal, happy to see the bronze after so long.

Wykla dug her toes into the warm sand. She should have brought a blanket out to lay out. It would have been nice to lay on the warm sand. She grinned at Ralae. "They go. Kameth is ready to skip to flying lessons." She laughed. "I know its important to learn harnessing and all that; its just hard to convince him sometimes. Honestly its nice to get out of those shardin' candidate chores. What about you?"
The little blue admired the green because she could fly. His long wings gleamed and soaked up the sunlight. Thank you. I eat a lot so I can grow big enough to fly with Mine. What is it like? He was pleased she had noticed how bigger he'd gotten. The lessons were boring when he had to just stand there and let Wykla climb all over him.
Boreal hummed back. He was interested in the gossip she had to tell. Fescues popped back in with a couple fingerrocks. One for herself and one for Boreal and Cheer to share.

"Everyday is better than the last. That is the truth. And I know how you feel. I swear, I never thought we were going to fly and one of the first times out, Zay does these loops and swirls and I swear the WeyrlingMaster had us doing the worst of the chores for a month straight." Ralae laughed. It felt good to laugh. It released some of the tension she had in her chest. Here, with her friend, everything would be alright.
Zaybreth looked down at the blue and wiggled. She sent him mental images of her flight. Swoops, loops, going through the clouds. There really was no way to describe flying except to do it. You will be there soon enough and I shall show you my tricks. To fly is to be free.
Cheer stopped her chatter long enough to chirp her thanks and eat.

"I know it wont be long before we're in the air together," she laughed. "It just feels that way from this side." Wykla listened to her friend's tale and snickered. That was pretty much what she was expecting with Kameth. High flying aerobatics. She could deal with a month of chores for that.
"Kameth was going to enjoy the sun. You can let Zaybreth join him and come hunt shells with me." The young girl offered. It would be fun to have some company.
Kameth already knew he wanted to fly more than anything. Flying would be everything to him. However, he didn't want to upset the green. He listened and nodded politely. Kameth dreamed of flying high and looking down on the world.
Boreal cheeped a thank you to his offspring then sent her off to do her stuff. He wanted alone time with his gold. Generously he offered Cheer the first bite. Fescues trilled and flitted off

"Once you take to the air, it is like you never want to come down. No worries, no concerns. Nothing above or below you, just you and your soul mate." Soft words from Ralae and she looked over at the green who was settling next to the blue. "Shells! What a good idea. Zaybreth hasn't had the chance to add to her shiny pile in a while now. Maybe I can find something really nice for her."
Zaybreth got comfy in the sands and looked around her. Maybe she could find shiny things as well. It was true her pile was small but she thought Cheer might be taking things. Don't worry Kameth. Once you can fly, I shall fly with you. We can go many places.
Cheer chirped rather prettily and took the first bite. How nice to have food. Had he been happy now?

Wykla snerked, "I can barely keep him down as is. Still it sounds grand. Kameth just wants to sleep in the sand. I might as well enjoy myself while I'm here. It looks like Boreal and Cheer are getting along wonderfully well."
She wiggled her toes through the sand and started walking slowly. Looking down Wykla scanned the ground for anything unusual. She really didn't need shells, unless one really caught her eye, so donating them to Zaybreth seemed like a good idea.
Kameth tilted his head. I will fly very fast, and make Mine's hair stream out behind her. She will like that. You do not have to babysit me. I will be a fast blue. Why did the green assume he wanted company?
Boreal cheeped consolingly at Kameth. Perhaps she liked company; he liked this gold's company too. He preened at Cheer happily. Very happy! His had been cheerful since the bright blue had come to join them. She had played and oiled him lots. Fescues flitted over to land on her girl's shoulder and peered intently at the new girl. New girl belong to new green? She was green!

Ralae smiled ruefully. "I know since we have been gone so much, Cheer has been off with other flits. I am surprised she is still around but it is good to have her."
Walking beside her friend, the teen kept an eye out for shells or rocks that would make Zaybreth happy. Anything deemed shiny. "He will be grown soon enough and then you will both be together in the skies. I think he will look handsome against the blue skies."
Zaybreth drooped a little. Kameth didn't want to talk to her. This made the green sad and she turned away a little. Snuffing, she answered stiffly. I said we could fly together. It is nice to fly with someone. You will not be a hatchling by the time you can fly.
Cheer chirped snippedly at the blue, catching Zay's mood. Turning away she went back gossiping with Boreal. It was good that they were happy. Lately hers and the dragon were sometimes sad. But they were getting happier.

"It's alright Ralae. You've been busy. At least you've been able to get out of the Weyr." She gave a grin. "I'd give a lot to be able to help right now. It doesn't feel like enough to have to wait." Wykla wondered if her friend would understand. Would they always be too young to help?
She stooped for a moment to pick up a curled shell. It was shades of browns swirled with creams. Over all it was a nice shell. "I think he was made for the sky. Such pretty blues on him. Your Zaybreth is pretty too." Wykla hoped Ralae wouldn't take offence. Every dragon was so unique, but she had a hunch that each rider thought his or her dragon was the prettiest.
"I'd be happy to watch Cheer if you need. I'm glad she's stuck around too."
Kameth rustled his wings as the green put on her show. He knew some of his fellow dragons were super clingy; hopefully this green wasn't one of them. I wouldn't know what it is like to fly with someone. However I guess you are right that I won't be a hatchling then. He rumbled in irritation, and ignored the gold flit.
Wykla heard the rumble and turned toward the blue. What is it Kameth? Mine, Zaybreth wants to fly with me. What if she's slow and can't keep up? The blue worried to his rider. She gave a soft sigh. I would like to fly with my friend too, so Zaybreth will have a chance to fly with us. If that's the case you can slow down to fly with her. I'm sure she wont want to fly all the time with you. She tried to cheer him up.
Mine says she'd like to fly with Yours Zaybreth. So we will get a chance to fly. He hoped that cheered her up. Yes Mine. Your right. I will slow down to fly with her.
Boreal blinked confused why Cheer scolded His' blue. It didn't seem long before she turned back to him. He crooned her to. He would help make them happy to. He was always trying to make his girl happy. Lots of practise.

Ralae blinked back tears and tried not to snap. She looked at her friend and wondered what she saw when she saw the scars. If she saw them at all. Maybe they were so close that nothing would ever change them. "Sometimes. Sometimes it is better to wait. Better not to rush in. I suppose you could say that rushing and wanting can give you more than you would ever want."
She stopped to look at a smooth black stone cracked with white and released it reflected her own mood. Whole but cracked. Smiling she nodded. "Every dragon is made for the sky. Zay is beautiful but she isn't blue. Or brown. Or red. Or whatever color will come next out of the egg. She simply is. I think you feel that way about Kameth too."
Well. If you can keep up then you can fly with me. I think I will go swim in the waters. That was Zaybreth's way of promptly ignoring the situation. She got up and waded out into the waters, opening her wings slightly.
Cheer bobbed her head. Sometimes hers was gone for a long time. But she came back! Maybe Cheer could find Boreal while she was gone and then there were would be company.
"Would you? I feel so bad leaving her. She forgets that I am gone for only half the day and scolds me like I have been gone for moons. Which I haven't been since... Well, It would be helpful and I could give you her extra sack."

Wykla gave a slow nod. She knew deep inside that they would grow up. They couldn't be young forever. "Then I'll have to enjoy our time as weyrlings." She threw her arm over the rider's shoulders. "So, will you spend time with me Ralae? We can have pretty parties." Wykla didn't have many she willingly called friend, but Ralae was one of them. The young girl saw her scars as a badge of honor.
"True that, or they wouldn't have wings." Wykla strolled down the beach. "I didn't say she had to be blue or any other color to be beautiful." The young girl tilted her head and gave a sheepish grin. "Kameth is my dragon, just as Zaybreth is yours. Hey look there's a collection of shells down there by the water. Want to go check 'em out?"
Wykla nodded. " 'Course I would! Send her to find Boreal when you have to go. Taking care of one more flit shouldn't be too hard. Plus I think Boreal would like the company." She had a slight smile as she glanced toward the two firelizards in question.
The young blue gave a huff when she said she was going swimming. Greens. That was fine with him. Kameth tucked his head under a wing and settled in to the warm sand.
Boreal crooned. He was sorry she missed hers. Yeah for her comming back! The bronze trilled and flipped his wings. Cheer could always find him. His girl could give her treats and oil her too. Fescues chittered as her girl threw her arm over the other girl. She hopped over and cheeped in Ralae's ear.

Ralae laughed. "I will always make time for you. How long has it been since we have been together? We have so much to catch up on! Zay's arts and trinkets, I met a BOY and his dragon, the whole Time thing. It's hard to talk about it. But I know I can talk with you."
She reached down and grabbed the rock. Yes cracked but still beautiful. "Sure! I wonder if we could gather enough to make necklaces or bracelets. We would need some leather. That boy, P'zul makes things doesn't he?"
Cheer was happy because she loved to spend time with him and his girl. Especially if there were treats and oil! She loved being rubbed down.
Ralae blinked as the green came from nowhere. "Hello little one! From Cheer and Boreal's clutch, yes?"

Wykla relaxed as Ralae laughed. All was well between them. "Too long!" She responded joyfully. "Oh! She's doing arts? This I'd like to see. What was it like going back?“ Her eyes flickered toward the scars. She had heard about the Thread, but what had it really been like?
“A boy?” She looked at her friend skeptically. What could Ralae possibly see in a boy? “I think you have a story to tell with that.” What could have happened that her friend would be excited about meeting a boy? There was plenty of boys here at this Weyr. “Um, yeah P’zul does.” She flushed slightly as she remembered that P’zul had given her a blue headband.
Wykla grinned as the green flit made herself known. “Yup! This is Fescues.” She was so proud her Boreal had helped produce such a lovely clutch. Boreal promised there would be lots of treats and oiling. It made his girl happy when she oiled him and he crooned. And she always made sure they had really good treats, especially if they helped oil the blue. Fescues hummed sweetly in the girl’s ears. She liked the attention.
