I've had some experience with Effort Value Training in the past. I was most active in the game during Pokemon Crystal. Which was the third game in the Second Generation of Pokemon games. That series was part of the Gameboy Color Era of Pokemon.
I trained in the Pc method of Effort Value Training back then. This method required you to simply use up all of your moves. Then, when every move said 0 Power Points. You would take that pokemon to a Pc. Then, deposit the Pokemon into the PC. You could then immediately withdraw the thing and then heal the thing at the Pokemon Center. This method allowed you to max out the statistics. Of more than just three statistics legitimately.
The methods of Effort Value Training in the third, fourth and fifth generations of Pokemon. Require you to fight certain pokemon to earn Effort Values. Not all pokemon will give you Effort Values when knocked out. Those that do will allow you to further customize your Pokemon for you. Every Pokemon has a set Effort Value. 4 Ev's into one statistic. Means that you will gain +1 more points in that statistic when you level. You can gain up to 255 Ev's in one single statistic. 510 total across all statistics. The training in a particular statistic. Can cover a Pokemon's weakness or play to there strengths. There are some very interesting combination you can make with your pokemon. Adding further depth to the already deep yet simple game.

Effort Value Training of Gothita-
Macho Brace Used- Note that the Macho Brace means that I get twice the Effort Values for every Pokemon I knock out. The trade off is that my speed is much lower. While I am using the Macho Brace. Speed is not permanently altered by using the Macho Brace. It just makes battling with it a bit more difficult.
Sewaddle- 4 Cottonee-1 Venipede-1 Pidove-1
Level 20 to level 21- +2 Hp, +1 Attack, +1 Defense, +1 Special Attack, +1 Special Defense, +1 Speed.
Venipede- 3 Sewaddle- 2 Cottonee- 6 Pidove- 2
Macho Brace Off
Sewaddle- 3 Venipede- 2 Cottonee- 2
Level 22 to Level 23- Hp +2, Attack +1, Defense +1, Special Attack +1, Special Defense +1, Speed +1.
Sewaddle- 4 Cottonee- 4 Venipede-4
Level 23 to Level 24- Hp= +2, Attack +1, Defense +1, Special Attack +1, Special Defense +1, Speed +1.
Sewaddle- 4 Cottonee- 1 Venipede- 2 Audino- 1
Level 24 to Level 25- +2 Hp, +0 Attack, +1 Defense, +1 Special Attack, +1 Special Defense, +1 Speed.
Sewaddle- 4 Cottonee - 2 Venipede- 2 Audino- 1
Level 25 to level 26- Hp +2, Attack +1, Defense +1, Special Attack +1, Special Defense +2, Speed +1
Sewaddle- 3 Audino- 2 Pidove- 2 Cottonee- 4
Level 26 to Level 27- Hp +3, Attack +1, Defense + 2, Special Attack +1, Special Defense +1 Speed +1.
This is an example of a less focused Effort Value Training. I'm not focusing on any particular statistic. Though, I am training in just one area for a lengthy period of time. I'll list my Pokemons progression through the levels.
Hit-Points - 49, 59, 61, 64 Attack- 18, 22, 23, 24 Defense- 30, 34, 35, 37 Special Attack- 32, 36, 37, 38 Special Defense- 36, 42, 44, 45 Speed- 26, 31, 32, 34
This Pokemons Nature didn't affect any of its statistics. It was a completely neutral nature. I also made sure that it had as few base statistics into Attack as I could when I started to train it.

Sewaddle Strong Wiled, Gentle Nature
This training is more advanced that my previous training. Not only will I be taking into account my Pokemons Nature and Starting Statistics before training. I will also be taking into account its Behavior which happens to be Strong Wiled. A Strong Wiled Pokemon means that the majority of its Iv's. Will be preset in its Special Defense statistic. Different Iv's means that the exact same Pokemon. Can have completely different statistics. Pokemon don't all start with the same number of I'vs and which statistics they are actually in are completely randomized.
Training almost exclusively against the Pokemon Frillish. Which raises the Pokemons Special Defense Effort Values. I also occasionally battle and defeat Alomomola.

Continuation of Sewaddle Training.
I finished maxing out this Pokemons Special Defense Effort Values to max. I then trained all 255 out of 255 Effort Values. Over the coarse of about two hours give or take. Using the Macho Brace. Which gives x2 to all Effort Points gained.
Palpitoad knocked out- 34 knocked out. Each individual knockout of these pokemon. Give 2 Hit-point Effort Value Points per knockout. With the Macho Brace, This makes every knockout worth 4 points. So, the final number of Hit-point Effort Value Points is.
34 (Number of Pokemon knocked out) x 2 (Number of Effort Value Points naturally gained. From knocking out this Pokemon). = 68 x 2 (Macho Brace Used). = 136 HP Effort Value Points.
StunFisk knocked out- 27 (number of StunFisk knocked out) x 2 (number of base Effort Value Points gained per knockout). = 54 x 2 (Macho Brace Used). = 108 HP Effort Value Points.
Total:
Special Defense Effort Value Points Gained- 255 out of 255 Hit-point Effort Value Points Gained- 255 out of 255
