Well, last year I bought a pair of oxy-acetylene welding goggles off Amazon for a cosplay of Engineer from TF2. Well, this year I finally decided to give them a paint job, and here are the results. Quite proud of how it turned out and was very glad to see the paint has a sheen after, well, painting. I used 3M sandpaper and Rust-oleum all surface metallic spray paint, pure gold color. I think my next step will be to cover the black plastic eye cups with black leather. Possible add cogs to the vent covers. I MIGHT also consider a leather strap. Being very careful right now as I don't want to risk ruining the finish before the paint fully dries. Dry enough to handle but I still smell fumes if I get close enough

Looks good - I really like that paint color. I've been debating whether to stop looking for the perfect pipe fittings and do the same thing with some goggles I got at an anime con a while back. But my perfectionist side desperately wants real metal goggles...and my nonperfectionist side is looking at my perfectionist side exasperatedly.
I also believe leather straps are necessary. Have some encouragement. People you've never met believe in you!

I was simply told keeping the elastic strap was a good idea for convenience, but a leather one might give a better look, and I can still wear them with a leather strap. But the plans for black leather seems to be standing, once I can find some. Also looking at sites that sell alternate lenses and inserts, even found a nice mini Gatling lens insert over at Brute Force for fairly cheap. http://www.bruteforceleather.com/store/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=40

I was considering doing something like leaving a tiny piece of elastic somewhere along the leather strap for my goggles, so they would look good and still be a bit stretchy. But I've also been wondering whether an elastic strap is that much more convinient - since I'd probably be wearing my goggles not over my eyes most of the time (though I have worn them as sunglasses, and it was epic), I was thinking they might actually stay on better with an inelastic strap. Sort of by the same theory that keeps crowns from falling off royal people, if that makes any sense. But I wouldn't really know.
I...that gun...I'm not sure if that's riddiculous or beautiful...
Personally, if I was going to mount a gun on my goggles, I'd put it to the side of the lense, but each to his own. It's a neat idea, nonetheless. And the quality looks fantastic, especially for the price -runs off to waste rest of day on website-

Then again with this if I don't like if I can set the item aside and save it for another idea.

Tis true. Pretty little gun bits are always useful to have round the house. (No sarcasm intended.)

And I was plannign to get a container of clock parts off of Etsy for further use, such as either putting cogs on the round vent covers or even taking off the vent covers and gluing cogs over them. Or possibly if I got some big enough using a hacksaw to cut out the center parts and decorate the goggle rims.

Ooh, I like the big gears hacksaw cutting rim thing. Never seen that before.
I was thinking of buying gears on Etsy, but then I got irritated with them being more expensive than I think they should be. And anyway, I get kind of OCD about gears. They look really cool when they're just stuck on for decoration, but I always want them to look like they do something. And then I can't think of anything for them to do, so I give up. And then I go back to thinking about how cool they look even when they're not doing something, and then I think about something else. Like leather. And homework. I'm tired.

Hehe, I do similar when thinking of adding gears ot guns, like say for a Maverick finding a bit enough one for around one end of the cylinder, then putting a small one that the big one would rotate.

Mock functionality! Can't say why I find it so appealing.

Master Ulthar Mock functionality! Can't say why I find it so appealing. I've seen people mock steampunk for some kind of "form over function" malarkey, to me if a device still functions as intended, it's a nice match of form and function.

That's a very good point. Absolutely no reason stuff shouldn't be allowed to look cool. And it's not like funtionless decoration is the sole province of steampunk...though it'd be awesome if it was...we'd be all "We own your floral centerpiece!" and people'd be like "Noooo!"...yeah. It'd be good.
