It had taken nearly a week for Siddie to feel steady enough to go anywhere other than classes, her room, or Sammy's room. She didn't like to think too hard about the nightmare that had been that disastrous field trip, but from time to time a thought intruded that she couldn't shake, or that she didn't want to. Much of it had receded to fog and terror in her head, but she remembered faces, at least; Tybalt, who she hadn't seen since, and Carthusia, who'd found out that -

Siddie's hands shook a little, and she gripped the cuffs of her sleeves to make them stop. She was in front of the demon dorm now, and while she knew the layout well enough, was no longer intimidated by the thought of going inside, she had realized, abruptly, that she had no idea what room belonged to Carry. She stared up at the facade, her mind spinning in little circles.

A corrividus glided past overhead; this wouldn't ordinarily have caught her attention, but this one was purple. Momentarily startled out of her nervousness, she watched it vanish into a window. ... Wait ... Hadn't Carry said something about having a purple corri? Siddie took another look at the window in question, then headed inside to find the room.

A couple of minutes later, she tapped on a door that she hoped belonged to Carry, and stood waiting for an answer, trying not to fidget.
PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2011 8:01 pm

The door was slightly ajar and the knock was no doubt for courtesy. It took the demoness within a few moments to bring herself to get up and go to the door to see who it was. Amethyst, the only purple crow on campus, was busy dancing away on her favorite windowsill. Having a dorm on the outside ring of the building had its perks, and Amethyst could go outside and do her business whenever she needed to. It saved Carry a lot of headaches and cleanup time. Anything that saved her from having to tax herself too much was a blessing, as odd as it was to say such a thing.

She wore a simple white dress with minimal lace designs on it. She couldn't be bothered to dress especially well lately, her head being up in the clouds. Classes went on as normal, but Carry couldn't shake the funk she was in. She didn't get anything answered on the field trip and that really bothered her. As a result, she cared less about how well she dressed and hardly slept at all since they got back. How long ago was that? She had no idea.

Walking to the door, her footsteps were quiet. The door made a creaking noise and an exhausted demoness of Pride looked out to see who it was. Oh... she knew the name... what was it? "...Sidde? Oh, Siddie. Hello. What brings you over here?"

Inside, Amethyst chirped and tweeted in a greeting to the living shadow.

"I just - wanted to see if you were okay," Siddie said, and clutched the skeleton kitten doll she carried more closely to her. Now she felt awkward. "I'm, if I'm interrupting you I can go away," she added. What had she been thinking? It looked like she'd gotten Carry up from a nap or something.

A flicker of movement caught her eye, and she glanced past Carry to see the purple corri settling itself on the windowsill. Oh, good. She'd guessed right about that, at least. Siddie hoped that the unusual mini was a comfort to Carry, much as Tox was to her, even if he was a grumpy little thing.

Blinking, it took Carthusia a few moments to really register what Siddie was saying. Interrupt? "Oh... oh Hell's bells, I'm sorry. No, you're not interrupting. Please, come in!" The demoness moved away from the door and welcomed the living shadow inside with as grand a gesture as she could manage. Amethyst was always interested in new people and she flitted over to inspect Siddie up close as soon as there was room for air time. The corri was gentle, fluffing her feathers on Siddie's cheek and inspecting all the intricate designs on the girl's outfit. Even her hair was neat!

Carry offered the girl a chair at her desk, or even on the bed. Really, Pride didn't much care where Siddie sat. She was just happy to have someone around. She shook her head as if telling herself 'no'. "I'm perfectly fine. Just a little... under the weather. I think there's a bug going around or something." She lied. It was probably pretty obvious, not that Pride could tell in her dazed stupor.

Siddie's shoulders slumped ever so slightly with relief. Carry wasn't upset that she'd come. Thank badness. "Thank you," she squeaked, and hesitated only a moment before entering the room and sitting down on the desk chair, patting her fluffy skirts absently into order. She held still so the purple corri could have a good look at her, leaning her cheek a little into the soft floof of feathers. "Hi," she told it softly.

Carry wasn't okay, despite what she said; Siddie could see that plainly. But it was just as plain that she didn't really want to talk about it. That was ... well, kind of a relief, really. They could talk about stupid, normal things and not about that. "I think I caught it too," she replied, ducking her head slightly so that her bangs hid her eyes. "I've been feeling pretty bad the last week or so. Just tired. You know. Not doing things." Her fingers worried at the lace of her cuffs.
PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2011 8:30 pm

The demoness laughed then. It was forced, as if it took all of her energy to do it, but it was genuine. "See? I told the nurse, I said, 'being all out there in the cold with no food'... but I guess what happens happens, right?" In truth, the island nearly ruined her. Carthusia wished she'd never gone. The island gave her more questions than she received answers and it tore her up on the inside. At least school was a welcome distraction. She poured herself into her schoolwork lately and it showed. Her grades were never better, but her physical and mental conditions were never worse.

Amethyst chirped softly at Siddie. Aww, she's shy! SHE'S SO CUTE. the bird would have said, if she had the ability to talk. Carry hadn't had the energy to dance with Ame lately, so the bird took to the winds whenever the window was open and worked off her extra energy there. Siddie was soft and nice and lacy, which Ame adored. Trotting on down her arm, the bird came to rest in a pocket of lacy in Siddie's lap. She nested a bit and made herself home, fluffing herself up in a soft black and purple ball. Carry laughed again.

"Don't worry. If she soils something, I'll pay for it, but she's very well trained. She likes you!"

"I know, right? I haven't been very hungry. If I lose any more weight my bodices won't fit," Siddie said, the light tone in her voice a little forced too. She was usually pretty good at hiding her true moods, but she'd gotten ... lazy, gotten soft, hadn't kept her walls up like she normally did. The thought distressed her. What was she going to do when she went home again and Ebby and Umbra started in on her again?

She smiled more genuinely at the bird in her lap and stroked Amethyst's backfeathers. "She's so sweet," she said. "She's really pretty, too. I don't think I've ever seen a purple one before."

"Shadows have weight?"

The thought never occurred to Carthusia, really. Especially not in this state. Carry thought Siddie simply kept her shape naturally and doubted the girl ever needed to eat. She was a shadow, but... duh, a living shadow which meant she had to eat at some point. The demoness got up and went to a small fridge by her bookcase. She pulled out some eye scream, and while it wasn't anything amazing, it was still something to eat. Plucking a spoon up from the top of the fridge, she handed the carton and the spoon to Siddie. She then patted the girl on the head before sitting down again.

"There, now you make sure your bodices fit. I think Sammy would be crushed and you're just so cute in those outfits. It would break my heart." Carry put her hands over her chest to make the gesture more dramatic. "Now, what's been bothering you?" If anything, it would keep the focus off of herself and she could maybe feel more like an Amityville student than a mistake. Maybe that would help her sleep at night.

Siddie nodded. "My kind do, anyway," she answered. "We're solid and have mass and weight. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to wear nice things." She accepted the carton and spoon with a smile, and giggled a little at the demoness's comment. "Oh, we can't have that," she said. "Thank you."

She took a bite of eye scream while she thought about how to answer the question - oh, that was good, and now that she thought about it, she hadn't eaten today, had she? Better not say so. It might make Carry worry, or scold her. "Bad dreams," she said softly. "I guess I just needed to see for myself that you were here." She offered Carry a little smile. "And I wanted to talk to you when we weren't - stressed."

Bad dreams? Now having a dream at all may have been a good thing at one point, but Carthusia understood all too well the bad dreams that may have been plaguing the shadow. She felt for the girl. Her face turned to a frown with concern for her, and Ame had no idea what was going on. "If talking would help you sleep, then by all means, please do." I should be talking too, but Sammy didn't really understand. I can't blame her. Siddie's got a nice ghoul on her arm, that's for certain.

Placing her hands on her lap, Carry sighed deeply. "To tell you the truth, I haven't been able to sleep much since we got back." She shook her head, the gradient of her hair swaying with the motion. Even her hair looked tired, strands misplaced here and there, some of which hung on her horns like rope or spiderweb. She may have even looked like a ghost in her condition. "You needed to see if I was here? Well... I am. And I'm glad you're here too, Siddie."

Siddie smiled weakly at Carry. Now she was making the other ghoul worry, and that wasn't good. "About - about being lost, mostly," she said. "It sounds stupid when I say it, but ... I keep dreaming I'm lost in the fog, and I'm all alone, and it feels like I'll never find my way out and be alone forever ... " Her voice wavered and broke, and she put the spoon down to drag her sleeve across her eyes. "I'm sorry. Sorry."

She looked up to meet Carry's eyes, even though her own near-invisible eyes were still trembling with suppressed tears. "I - thank you," she said, and put the eye scream carton aside on the desk. "Could I brush your hair?" she asked on impulse, not quite sure why; only Carry looked so worn and lost and tired, and her beautiful hair was all rumpled, and Siddie always felt a little better when she was properly well dressed and done up. It was why she was so dolled up now, after all.
PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2011 9:45 pm

Carthusia sat and listened with concern as the other ghoul explained what was bothering her. Was she simply bottling everything up too? And it took poor Siddie walking clear across campus just to see her, in that lovely dress of hers... oh, Carry felt horrible about the whole thing and it showed. Pressing her cheek into her palm, the demoness shook her head. "Don't be sorry, Siddie. I've been crying too. You're not alone, though. Sammy cares so much for you, you may not know. But I can see it in her eyes. And you have me here too..." And everyone else who loves you. she thought. She hated to see the other ghoul cry.

At the request of brushing her hair, Carry blinked in surprised. "Umm... well, if it would do you some good, of course you can. Not that I mind. I just don't want you to think you have to or anything." She pointed to the nightstand not too far from the place where she sat on the bed. Her hairbrush was sitting there as it always did. Truthfully, she did brush her hair, but she didn't give it the care and maintenance it deserved and needed. "I keep... thinking that everyone doesn't trust me anymore. Like the island put this big wedge between me and the rest of the students. And I can't explain why I was there to begin with... it didn't give me any answers." the demoness explained, her voice nearly a whisper as her shoulders slumped.

"I'm very glad for Sammy," Siddie said quietly. "She's - she's helped a lot." Sammy was good at making her smile, at getting her to laugh even when she didn't really feel like it; the zombie ghoul was so different from Siddie, but seemed to understand her so well sometimes. "I'm glad you're here and okay," Siddie told Carry. "I'm not very good at making friends. It's nice." She felt a little pang of guilt; was she sounding fake? Overwrought? She wasn't trying to be fake. She had mimicked attachment before, and sometimes did still, but she genuinely liked Carry.

She carefully dislodged Amethyst from her lap. "Sorry," she said to the bird, "but I'm going to get up." Once Amethyst had moved, Siddie went over to climb onto the bed, picking up the brush. "I know I don't have to," she said, a little shy again. "I just want to." She arranged herself behind Carry and began to carefully tend to the demon ghoul's hair, gently working through tangles and brushing it back to sleek smoothness.

"It's not your fault," she said. "I believe you. I know you didn't know either." She separated out a thin lock of hair and began to braid it back, the familiar motions soothing her. "I think Sammy does too. We haven't really - talked about it much. But once she's your friend, she's your friend."
PostPosted: Sat May 07, 2011 10:12 pm

Carry sighed and appreciated the attention that was being given to her hair. Maybe the both of them could benefit from it. That would be wonderful. Siddie's voice and mannerisms were soft like velvet and Sammy was so rough and tumble. The two of them were adorable together. "I'm glad to know she's okay with me, and you too. I know Barth doesn't trust me but... he's Barth. He's Sloth. He does whatever's easiest and even then, he'll try to get someone else to do it for him." A little laugh escaped her now, and while she wasn't sure if Siddie knew who Barth was, the idea would get across regardless. Amethyst twittered and chirped from her spot on the desk where Siddie gently left her. The crow was trilling a little song for them.

"I guess I should just stop worrying, huh? I guess I should quit worrying about it so much." She would have shaken her head or moved, but that would ruin Siddie's work. "But sometimes it's hard. I get so self-conscious sometimes. Is that how it is with you too, Siddie?"

Siddie giggled a little, shakily. "I was paired with him for an exercise in Etiquette class. He offered some suggestions, but it seemed terribly exhausting, so I did the place setting." She'd been mildly annoyed at the time, but it was amusing now. She felt sort of sorry for anyone who got paired with Barth for a more active assignment.

"It's hard not to worry," she agreed softly. "I always feel like people are looking at me, when I'm anywhere." She took up a second lock of hair, beginning to weave it into the first; when she finished, Carry would have a net of thin braids woven across the back of her head and joined into one. "I can't not think about what people think. That makes it ... difficult, sometimes." Sammy didn't worry about what people thought. She just did things. Siddie envied that self-assurance sometimes.
